  • Synopsis: Fourteen-year-old Joe is the only child of Jeanette and Jerry -- a housewife and a golf pro -- in a small town in 1960s Montana. Nearby, an uncontrolled forest fire rages close to the Canadian border, and when Jerry loses his job -- and his sense of purpose -- he decides to join the cause of fighting the fire, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. Suddenly forced into the role of an adult, Joe witnesses his mother's struggle as she tries to keep her head above water.

She didn’t leave her husband because she had an affair. She had an affair to give herself a reason to leave her husband.

@@anantambisht4895 don’t you feel it’s selfish to abandon your family during a time of need just to fulfill some sort of undercooked urged to do something different? I just feel like once someone undertakes having a family they need to put aside a lot things to make sure they are providing, especially when it comes to kids.

@@destine1547 he had a job ? But i think you are right , his character always wanted to leave place and move on so that was a part of his character , I think the shot of him in the truck with all other firemen after he said goodbye to Joe was reassuring that he liked freedom

I’ll keep an eye out for this one. It has an excellent cast. Is Jake ever bad in a movie?

This was a FANTASTIC film. And yeah, you are absolutely right - Paul Dano managed to make a directorial debut that was entirely his own.
An extremely heart breaking yet sombre film. Career best performance by Mulligan.

Another sufficient review Zach, I am so hyped for this one! I recently got the chance to view Yorgos Lanthimos's The Favourite and the Suspiria remake and they're both easily masterpieces! Highly recommended!

I thought the kid in this movie was nosey as hell, the mother disgusted me because she never reallly sheltered her son from adult issues, that at 14, he shouldn't have seen, or even been too aware of, in the first place. And the father pretty much left his family for an extended period of time, unrealistically thinking that everything would be the same when he returned. He, also, didn't shelter the son from adult issues. Sucky parents. Good movie though.

I disagree, i think the display of emotions is what make it so great, the acting was as good as it gets, mainly from jake and carey
