In the summer of ‘72.I worked for Hobbs division of Stewart Warner before returning to graduate studies in EE. My assignment was developing a control circuit for the machines that “ welded “ the components to a flat metal “ circuit board” that was the “ seat belt interlock”Note it was NOT a printed circuit board with components soldered to it but a specially coated steel board to which the individual components were resistance spot welded all at the same time.Needless the say this was a manufacturing “ nightmare” . SW took on this effort “ on speck” in competition with other suppliers who were submitting designs to the “ Big Three” manufacturers in hopes of getting a contract to supply ‘74 production. I got “ consulting calls “ through the ‘73 academic year because production was fraught with problems. My folks bought a ‘74 Pontiac and it had the ‘seat belt interlock “ that I worked to develop”. The more you know!
gas guzzling 460, best engine ever.. mild cam flat tops, alloy intake. 400+ hp.. torque to sell to the chevy guys.. still playing with not quit engines.. shoot out between 460 / 454.. speed shop thrown at 454.. gained 7 hp more than the pretty std 460.. 2c... here in aus.. the ''chevy'', holden guys, dream of clevo heads.. the LS, is getting close to an engine.. still has problems,, mainly gm..
My mom's side of the family all worked at Ford in Michigan.. My grandpa bought a new (always) 72 Ford LTD . Two years later it failed inspection because of gaping rust holes ... I needed a vehicle in 1985 , and he gave it to me . Only had 35k miles on it & loaded with options .. My brother & I welded the bumper on , and patched all the qtr & fender bottoms ... I drove it for 5 years without any issues ... It had a.c. , cruise , power seats & windows.. It rode great . In 1990 I bought a new Chevy Barreta . It was junk ! I bet I put 15 fuel pumps in it .. I got to where I could change one out in 20 min...(dropping the tank was no fun)
The flat tire was all your fault!! It was perfectly balanced with three wheel nuts 🍻😂 and also that’s the first time that I have seen Duff looking scared and concerned for his safety 😂
Saving this for tonight Mortske! Had me a 78 LTD Bro-Ham and boy did those era cars looked like they took a mansion, slapped wheels on it and drove it down the assembly line bolting on anything that made it look more like a fancy building in DC than a car 😂😂😂
Watch a Mort and Duff Dog video sure chases away the Monday Morning Blues. And as always, Mort successfully brings another classic American ride back to life. 👍
Hello from New Hampshire! About the seat belt laws here, you are correct. No seat belts required if you are over 18. Up until the late 90s it was 12 and under you needed to wear a belt in NH and Massachusetts. If you were 13 and older, no belts required. Enjoy your videos every week. Give Duff extra pats and treats for his incredible supervisory work.
Now that was a real Mortske Monday , complete with sidekick helpers , a down and dirty FORD of the Mercury Marquis brand name , and tires that have sound effects that tell you when there only round on the top . On top of that a double helping of sarcastic humor that could take the hide off a bull at a dead run. Thank you Mortske , give Duff Dog a treat and a bath , also MoJo your trusty sidekick should get a little mention because He's a standup guy . all this from Stuart in Canada ..
I’m glad for having the poor man’s RUclips, that’s without the smell when I hear you say you don’t smell the rubber over the interior… Thanks for the content, it made my day! 👍🏼
"Boat era is right!! Here is a true story from the late 1970's: I was visiting my Aunt. We decided to go out for dinner. I offered to drive but she insisted. She drove her Pinto station wagon. Sure enough while going around a bend in the road here comes a giant 1974 Ford LTD 4 door with 5 drunk guys in the car on our side of the road. I yelled "watch out" and braced for impact. My aunt was old and had slow reflexes. We hit head on!! The Pinto was scrunched like an accordion. Her engine was literally under the back of the car. The driveline was missing, probably somewhere in the field. We were showered with glass. My Aunt went to the hospital with a couple broken ribs from smashing into the steering wheel, not wearing her seat belt. The fire department had to cut the door off to get her out of the car. I was unscathed. I swear to God that LTD only had a dent in the front bumper. I couldn't believe it!! One of the drunk guys in the LTD went to the hospital in critical condition, NOT from the accident but from alcohol poisoning!!
Two....I repeat two, "Mortske Minutes".... look at you and all this " Value added content"... always love the cameos with Mopar Madman... thanks for my Monday fix
That is a new definition of a “Hot Mess”! If your local law enforcement saw this video, I think they might consider writing you up for several moving violations. I do love all of it though! Thanks for the video!
The only redeeming quality of a monday is the new mortske episode. Even wrenchin for a living, i throughly enjoy every episode. Even if its a LS swap or something that doesnt tickle my fancy. As always the hat is off to you!
Good luck on this Grand Marquis! My parents had a 72, same color...engine, etc...Many years ago, they had vacuum issues...MILES of vacuum lines to check! I spent a weekend and a case of sammiches trying to fix the folding headlights...I did NOT win that battle! I resolved to velcro to keep the headlights open...The car was a BEASTLY Beauty. My Mom loved the 'couch feel" of the seats and the one acre trunk to store anything they wanted! NOT Greta approved as the best we go was 10 MPG! Happy motoring! Rob Murray Young Harris, GA
Good morning, another great video. I always look forward to Mondays, with Duff and Mortske. It was good to see Chin and the Mopar Mad Man. We can’t forget Mojo, it’s always good to see what he is working on.
Last year my wife was looking for a new car. We poked at some new stuff but frankly nobody makes a good highway boat anymore. They all basically ride like economy cars but with more bling. So we ended up just getting a healthy older 05 Grand Marquis. It has those corner lights and I really don't know why more cars don't have those. Such a great feature to have.
No, you always do a great job on fixing card. That's what I like doing. I do it all the time. I've got a seventy eight ford tow truck that I had restored I'm not quite done with it yet, but I'll give it to them.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Our Italian neighbors Pete and Carole had a '74 Olds 98 with the awful starter interlock. They just drove with the belt buckled and sat on it - no seatbelt laws back then. I remember all the way back at 3 years old my dad helping them replace the 455's head gaskets in the driveway. It was white, with a blue interior, and was as big as a whale and about as slow. His work van was a Chevy, us kids used to all load up in the back and they'd take us to the skating rink or out for pizza. (no rear seats, it was a cargo van!) P.S. I love Mortske long videos, don't ever change to short form.
My parents had a 78 ltd station wagon. Later on my parents had a 96 f150 ex cab short box. Dad was going back and forth in the garage looking at the truck. Asked him what are you doing he said that the station wagon was longer then the truck. He said the station wagon took more space in the garage.
When Chin, mopar madman and you get together it reminds me of buying cars with my buddies when I was single and we would drink beers and try to get them going, mostly just drank beers and ragged on eachother but I miss that, keep up the great content man!
Spindles from a 70s Marquis will directly swap to a 60s full size Ford. Only had to adjust the toe. I did that on my 61 Galaxie years ago to get factory disc brakes. Swapped a 390 and C6 in place of the tired 292. It was a beast!
Dad had a 73 F-350 Super Camper Special when we were kids. For it’s time it was considered powerful but by today’s standards it was a gas sucking slug. The 460s loved snapping off exhaust manifold studs more than the LS and 5.7 Hemi combined. It’s fairly rare to crank one that does not have an exhaust leak at the manifolds. He finally traded it when the oil embargo sent gas prices soaring and availability could be difficult. 8mpg was what he claimed it got with the 4V carburetor and towing gears in the rear. It also came with the nylon timing gear that loved to disintegrate before 100K miles.
Good morning from Cape Cod 🦈 I bet you were so excited to be working on a starter once again Mortske 😉 I enjoyed traveling along jumping tracks blowing tires and sort of running out of fuel 😂 great video as always 👍✌️🇺🇲
What a hunk of junk!!! -it's great!! Fortunately, i'm too far away to buy it! Thanks Mortske for the video and I really appreciate the time you take going through comments!
Back in the young days my dad married this lady who owned a 71 Buick Electra 4 door 455. I was a young pup just getting my license. So she would take me out to practice driving. I had been driving since i was 13 so there was nothing new there. Anywho... you mentioned wanting a big GM but overlooked mentioning that boat. It's a shame that so many met their fate on the derby circuit. I borrowed her car one day and as always I decided to let the one wheel peel... it did. The tread came off at the end of a particularly nice 75' smoke fest. But it just hung on there just like yours did. Since i was in the neighborhood though I had to get away from the "crime scene". I limped away to a location less marked before i went to one of the nearby houses to call my dad to bring me a spare. I wasn't fooling anyone. He knew right away the deal and even called out the general area where i was repaving the roads. Good times. Can't wait to see your next adventure... Pitter Patter..
Man, those 460's would pass anything but a gas station! My dad had a 1974 LTD with a 400 same color as your Merc. luckily for him I didn't drive that one as I was in college wheeling around in my 1965 Galaxy 500. In high school I did some serious burnouts in his 1969 Merc Monterey. That boat had a 390 and held its own on the ND Hwy 20 1/4 mile just out of town. Even had the start and finish stripes painted across the lanes.
Glad to see the Mortske minutes return. I was shocked to see that the tire that had more dry rot than a blue tarp that sat outside for 8 years blew out !! Shocking, lol
Lol yeah the gas can strap to the front bumper is hilarious. I was just thinking about that when you were restrapping it right before the first drive. Deb seems to be enjoying himself, he such a good dog. He’s a good boy. 👍
Took over a Blue one like this my sister had, picked it up in the 80s in Michigan, drove it home to VA drove like a dream all the way home, had the car for years never had a problem with it until I traded it off. Kinda wish I still had it... Lol
My grandparents bought a brand new '77 Grand Marquis broham two-door with a 460 so they could tow their big camping trailer that they were taken back and forth between Ohio and Florida seasonally Car was a factory dual exhaust brand new My dad turned around and ordered all the exhaust parts and put the dual exhaust on Mom's 75 Marquis broham With a 400 m Glad to see you working on the old Merc Funniest thing I ever saw was a big Thunderbird on the five on five wheels running around Toledo Ohio on all four space-saver spare tires
12 volt linear actuators are awesome for hideaway headlights. Cheap and easy to convert . I used to have a 72 BlunderThird . 460 all the opts. Was definitely a boat .lol Good stuff as always.
Quick comment Sir there's two car channels that I absolutely love your's and puddins. Thanks for taking him under your wing keep him safe lol his awesome human being
70’s boats rule. My first car was a 74 Impala 4 door hard top. Great high school car. Friends car broke down one night. Hauled 3 people in the front seat, 6 in the back seat and 2 in the trunk for 40 miles. Everyone got home safe and sound.
My first car circa 1983 was a 1974 Lincoln Mark IV with the mighty (thirsty) 460. While dinged and rusted for $350, she did feature full leather and limited-slip and a hood as long as some driveways. Bummer your front power windows didn't work - they had a nifty sequence where the quarter-window would descend first before the main window to tune your ventilation. Had to sell after one summer's labor but memorable - thanks for the revival!
Those old battleships rode so nice. The old 460 seems to run really well. Great to hear you give the Polebarn garage a shout out. Derek always puts out a good video. Keep up the great work.
Mortske minute rockin'. I started giggling when you lost a tire but was falling out of my chair when it dragged on and on and on. Duff crazy dog, I thought he was gonna lead yah home.😂😂👍🤣🤣
Back in about 78 I bought one of those jet black with a leather interior for 100 bucks It needed a head gasket, those cars are really fast considering how big they are. What you do with that 460 is take a 429 Cam and push it in there.
Fun fact, the 15426378 ford firing order is actually the same cylinders firing at the same time as 18436572, just numbered different, with 5 where 1 would be
What a nice car. I know it's rusty and needs some love but it's still better than what I have🤣 This was almost top of the line car except for the Lincoln that was Fords top model. I'm amazed the pumper valances are there, usually they go first. I was hoping the other old tier would pop turning the burnout but she held firm.
It's about time that one of you guys figured out that using a camera with one hand and wrenching with the other makes for shoddy video
Turns out your champagne taste doesn't fit our Busch Light budget.
Turns out this channel is definitely not for you, Ron.
Turns out the rest of us don't give a 💩 what you think
Thats a fact jack 😂@@user-KrackerJack
So someone makes a nasty remark about his opinion....and Mortske gives it a "thumbs up"....?
TWO Mortske Minutes in one episode? What a deal!
Two brake boosters two cylinoids two mortske minutes. I see a pattern.
I want my money back
I finally ordered my Mortske hoodie the other day. Can’t wait. Puddin is out of stock on the hoodie I want from him
I dunno...it's almost like we owe him money or something....almost
"The More You Know!"
I’m telling you this channel is what it is because of duffers! He is the best supervisor ever!
He is the voice of reason.
I'm just glad that Duff seems to have conquered that hoover schneef demon, that he had on his back for so long.

MORTSKE MONDAY!!!
That thing is beatimus!😮
I feel like you didn't take this "revival" very seriously...so I really enjoyed it !!
Thanks, big guy !!!
A great way to spend my Monday evening, thanks to Mortske, Duff dog, Mad Man, Mojo and Chin.

Wrenching with buddies is always fun. Hand them a flashlight and yell at them to remind them of their childhood!
Always!
You should derby that rig. You and Puddin Slick and Bill. That would be a show
Well don't forget to invite, DD Speed shop, lol, that would really spice it up, lol.
The ass end on 70s Fords is like a beer can. And they fold straight down into the ground, so ya cant back up.
Dalton really needs this thing!
1991 was a great year. I was 13 years old that summer. One of the best years of my life.
Great thats my evening sorted. A well it run and a history lesson in one. Your walk arounds are just great.
Great episode! These 70s Marquiseses are seriously some of my favorite cars of all time.
The only redeeming quality of a monday is the new mortske episode. Even wrenchin for a living, i throughly enjoy every episode. Even if its a LS swap or something that doesnt tickle my fancy. I was just lamenting how Mondays suck...totally forgot it's Mortske Monday!😊
I'ma Mercury man..this makes me really happy.
A true 50 year old car!!!!! It's very collectible!!!! This should be a total restoration.!!!!

You are correct about 1974 having a seatbelt start interlock system. By now though most have been disabled.
Well cool you covered it in a Mortske minute.

To honk the horn push the turn signal switch into the column. My grandmother had a 1978 Mercury Zephyr and that's how you blew the horn.
Thats not how they worked in 74.

The Ferd 460 only came with the 4 barrel! From what I know anyway, used to be a Ferd guy but got smarter and became GM fan 😊. Great episode Mortske!
I now know why you love headers so much. Fighting to get my sparkplug out on my 4th gen firebird sucks.
yuck
Call the car Uncle Buck ! Lol 😂👍
@polebarngarage needs that! Beast of a boat! Love them old "road glider" cars..LOL
My dad had a 72 T-Bird w/460. It had the same type of steering wheel and, yes, that membrane when pinched should blow the horn.
Good to know!
What a Boat! Gotta fix Duffs window so he can get fresh air! Oh yah, a new tire or two! Thanks for the ride!
Quick comment Sir there's two car channels that I absolutely love your's and puddins. Thanks for taking him under your wing keep him safe lol his awesome human being
Thanks 👍
That was fun. Well at least the hood didn't fold back I remember that . Save that that thing for parts. Have a great week. See you next week
a great monday is when a new mortske video is uploaded! thanks for the freat vid and all the work it entails!
Right up PBG’s alley! Add to his collection!
Chins editing is sooo good❤
I love the way duff hits the deck just before you do something sketchy on a test drive , it’s like he knows it’s coming 😂
He’s no dummy
Who would’ve believed ? Digging the Mortske Minutes, btw} 👍👍
Glad to hear it!
70’s boats rule. My first car was a 74 Impala 4 door hard top. Great high school car. Friends car broke down one night. Hauled 3 people in the front seat, 6 in the back seat and 2 in the trunk for 40 miles. Everyone got home safe and sound.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks
Those land yachts are just tooooooo cool!🍻👍
Mortske actually called them vice grips putting the battery in.....😂😂😂
Good day sir. She’s a little rough but I’m sure someone needs that thing. Great one as always!
You got that right
Those old battleships rode so nice. The old 460 seems to run really well. Great to hear you give the Polebarn garage a shout out. Derek always puts out a good video. Keep up the great work.
Enjoy your shows Thanks!
Glad you like them!
The 4v indicates how many venturi's the carburetor had the 2v is for the venturi's in the 2bbl
Mortske minute rockin'. I started giggling when you lost a tire but was falling out of my chair when it dragged on and on and on. Duff crazy dog, I thought he was gonna lead yah home.😂😂👍🤣🤣
This was a great video, very informative and entertaining! Loved seeing Duff outrun you! 😅
Thanks for sharing! 😊
our pleasure!
Back in about 78 I bought one of those jet black with a leather interior for 100 bucks It needed a head gasket, those cars are really fast considering how big they are. What you do with that 460 is take a 429 Cam and push it in there.
Fun fact, the 15426378 ford firing order is actually the same cylinders firing at the same time as 18436572, just numbered different, with 5 where 1 would be
Steve McGarret from Hawaii five-0 called, he needs his Mercury back
Lol
I like those Mortske Minutes! Interesting bits for sure. Keep em coming!
Will do!
Those boats ride so nicely, when they are in good shape!
Great job. Another great video 👍👍
Fantastic drive! Better than Top Gear!!!!
Highway nah it's just a road that ain't dirt 😂😂
Love this channel
