Best of luck to you and your family
Thank You for pointing out the obvious! There's a HUGE difference between a hunter and a shooter; you can punch paper or ring gongs all you want, but it takes a hunter to turn down a 400yrd shot at a stone sheep in a swirling 35mph wind after climbing 4000ft for 5hrs and know that the shot would be iffy at best. The game deserves a quick clean kill. They deserve that respect.
If you don’t have the equipment and talent to shoot a sheep at 400 yards I don’t think you should hunt at all cause you’re probably iffy at 100 as well
I really need to make a public apology. A couple months ago I made an “inane” comment about the disruption of someone in the background while you where speaking. In particular I said that your wife should go do something else while you made your video. I do regret saying that. It was rude. I didn’t think before I spoke. My thoughts were not relayed by my words. I’m truly sorry you were offended by me. I do appreciate your videos and hope that you will keep this up for a good many years to come Lord willing
I totally agree with you on distance. I am confident out to about 400yds off a bench. In the field, under real world conditions, I am good for half that distance. There has been plenty of times that I have held up because I wasn't sure I could make an ethical shot, that's just the way it is sometimes and I go home without meat. Thank you for your excellent videos!
You have the best moral code needed for hunting wildlife. The old slogan- when in doubt, Do without. If we had more like you in this country, this world be truly be a better place. And Besides, I've never wanted to give game any more than a 200 yard head start!
Mr and Mrs Selby.., offer your videos as a keepsake to those of us who would like to share all your life’s knowledge to our “grandchildren “. You are a teacher and we are the students and would love to pass it on. 🇺🇸👍👂👀🙏🏻
It really makes me feel good that there is still those that have an ethical sense to hunting and I am glad you are so outspoken about long range big game hunting. We have a generation that doesn't give a damn about wounding a big game animal and failing to finish the job because he's got a hike a thousand yards to get where the bullet struck the animal. The only thing I've ever shot at a 1000yds was paper and silhouettes.
Careful not to paint with broad strokes. It's not the "entire generation" that's unethical. Just like your entire generation wasn't all ethical. It's individuals who shouldn't be hunting in the first place.
Mrs. Cathy, your videography is very well done. My passion is hunting ferrel hogs, and it’s rare for my shots to go beyond 100 yards, but I love watching Mr. Randy share his knowledge and history. He might like the rifle I use. It’s a 1956 Winchester model 88 chambered in .308. God bless.
I was hunting with an old Alaskan guide once. He said he had seen only one client cleanly kill a caribou at "at least 600 yards". The hunter spent a long time setting up the shot, he was an ex sniper. Beyond 200 yards seemed a challenge for many. The wind is usually blowing in caribou country.
I especially like the part about the lost game animals, with the magic of editing every shot is a one shot kill on video, keep speaking the truth randy folks need to hear of this stuff, tv shows dont show this and they don’t dare speak of it otherwise. I would like to see more vids on reloading, your insight on hand loading is priceless randy keep it coming
Thanks to youtube a lot of knowledge and experience is saved for posterity, my biggest regret in life is that I did not use all the opportunities I had to listen to - and learn from my grandfathers, father and uncles. They are all gone now.
This is the video that Randy mentions RL 26 as being an ideal powder for the .270 Winchester. 12:40 just for my own reference. Lots of great videos by Randy to try to keep track of! Carry on! 🙂
The Real Gunsmith's Wife, Cathy: Thanks! Where we are slow DSL is all that is available other than EXPENSIVE sat systems that just aren't appealing because of price and reviews on reliability. It takes a LONG time for even the longest videos on here to download, I can't image the load time for an hour long. Sorry to disappoint, but I am sure the detractors will be happy. ;) Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment.
2 thums up to you. I've been moose hunting with a friend of mine for over 15 years now and even thou where we hunt there's a few area where we coold spot a moose at 15 hundred to 2000 feet thru the swamp, we wont even try anything past around the 200 yard so not to waste a game. Keep up the good work.
I’ve just purchased a s20 sako in 7mm rem mag and you’re passed on knowledge on reloading has taken me to a new level i throughly enjoy reloading and increasing the throat length in the sako will make all the difference and they come with more room in the mag length will be a game changer thank you very much sir shane Mitchell-in New Zealand all the best
So glad you are listening and learning! Wonderful to hear from shooters and sportmen/women from around the world. May you and yours stay well and be blessed!
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and experience you have in your videos. I love watching all your videos, especially the ones on bear sprays and handguns. Thank you again.
mr randy sir , I have learned a great deel from your expertise ! God bless you and your family ! I will be calling you soon for a rebarrel job , your wisdom is greatly unappreciated by this young generation ! thank you for your great work and years of experience !
Absolutely the truest words no wheel to be invented here , most of my rifles are older cals , I only own two custom rifles a Mauser 98 in 264 win mag which was made by venom arms in the uk and a Springfield 1903 action dated 1934 , in 30-06 only the actions of these rifles are original with improved slight alterations , bought them off a collector but not much of shooter, but still love shooting my Enfield no 4 in its original form with iron sights best regards Steve
With your knowledge passed on I have taken my Sauer S100 .270 to whole new heights. I chose a good quality bonded woodleigh bullet. I opted for a flat base bullet because realistically the 400-500 yard range that I limit it to wouldn't have a whole bunch of effect on performance. Loading it out to full available length and using precision callipers to measure case heads and carefully inspecting primers has me confidently and safely pushing a 150 gr projectile with H4831 to over 3050fps. It's a dam hammer. It's savagely unkind up close on game and very effective out at 400 and 500 yards. Thank you for the knowledge.
Thanks so much for addressing the issue of attempting to take game at unreasonable distances. It varies with experience and skill but it truly bothers me when I hear stories of harvesting game at 600 yards and beyond with a 6.5 CM and the like. Nobody ever mentions the countless animals that have run off and die a slow death. At 66 I have been a lifelong hunter and have had more than a few opportunities to shoot game at long distances with the correct cartridge but passed due to the factors you mentioned. You probably could tape a ten plus minute video on witnessing game being shot and running off never to be found. Thanks again Randy. Thoroughly enjoy your videos.
Thank you for speaking the truth about this so called "long range hunting". The idea that there are guys with television shows promoting this pisses me off. Most shooters can't make a 200 yard shot on game in field conditions...
Love the videos. Ignore the trolls Randy my guess thay never mastered anything in life. And never will. You are a master of your trade. I'd rather learn form someone with a life time of experience. Than someone who just walked out of a school. You learn so much more from experience.
Thank you so much Rob Boat! For the most part we ignore the trolls. A few get comments deleted as they are downright foul and x rated. We don't allow that in our house or our presence, so they are removed. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, a great experience. God bless and good shooting!
Thanks for your videos. I completely agree. This is why hunting is called hunting and not shooting. Technology should not replace good hunting techniques and ethics. 👍
I enjoy listening to you also very informative lots of information and years and years of experience keep it coming wish I live next to you so I could talk to you every day
Another great video and discussion! I especially like that you pointed out that there isn’t much new. I’ve hand loaded since 1981 and pretty much all of the things discussed on many RUclips videos today that are presented as new actually predated my starting in this great hobby. If anyone doubts that 1000 yard shots are unethical, then watch the videos of people shooting at steel at 1000 and see how many 1st hits they get before they are on target. They try to dial in with their computer and then expend a few shots using Kentucky windage. Animals deserve better than that.
I agree with u 100% as i do most of your videos. I live in PA not only do I shoot 1,000yd benchrest i build what i feel are very fine long range rifles for people and i shoot every other day in the week if not every day. I max my humane killing range with my two long range hunting rifles (31" 1:8twist 264win & 27" 1:8twist 270win at 700yds in near perfect conditions) the same thing is happening here with people going well over 1,000yds. And you are correct that 270win pushes its 170eol tune right at 3,000fps with RX26 at e.s. under 5fps. Off labradar
One point that never gets mentioned is bullet performance at long range......there is not any! Bullets fail to expand due to low velocity, which results in far less tissue destruction, often wounding game even with well placed shots.
@Camp'n Outdoors seen those bullets you talk about, eldx amax etc. Great for long range but at 300 yards they explode on impact on a rib. So your stuck at long range unless your going to carry 2 rifles. See. Eldx 365 yards blow a six inch hole on the entrance. Once recovered, only bullet we found with a metal detection was 1/4 inch piece of the jacket that pierced the heart and stuck in the rib meat on the other side. Key is know what the bullets capable of for max.
@Blake I think I'd just be happy if I never had to hear or read the name 6.5 Creedmore, as well as the 6mm Creedmore, again. Seems like a lot of people don't even know that there are a variety of calibers besides whatever the current flavor of the week caliber is, it wasnt too long ago when the .308 Winchester was the one that everyone just HAD to have, Hahaha!!! Nerds!
Depends on what you mean by long range. I hunted deer with 30-06 handloads. Way out yonder was 150 yds. I had a very old 1917 enfield by Rem. with a pited barrel. Fact. Amo in 150 to 165 grns was paper plate size groups. Handloading got me the perfect comb. and groups where under 1 moa. The comb. was Fed cases ,Imr 4350 and Speer Grand Slam in 165 Grs. One problem. Grand Slam´s were so tough that all deer were shot trough. Litle expansion. Changed aiming point to neck or back bone. Problem solved. Now 300 Win Mag expand out to 350 and I´m shure 500 . Won´t shoot beyond that. Look up Randy on bullets.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE A BULLET BEING SEATED PROPERLY IN REGARDS TO DISTANCE INTO THE CASE? HOW DEEP INTO THE CASE IS IDEAL IF MAGAZINE LENGTH IS NOT A LIMITING FACTOR? THANK YOU FOR THIS PRICELESS INFORMATION! I AM SO HAPPY I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL!! GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY RANDY.
Woe wiser words and simple common sense !I love my 300 Wby and 300 rum ,you couldnt talk me into a 6.5 creedmore or 300 nosle rall the hype behind advertising on "new calibers "cant make for volume in case capacity and now all these new shows are promoting buying their expensive 7000.00 plus rifles with 2500-3500$optics and their special shootings schools still doesnt make up for common sense and practical limits on game, well said ,well said
Couldn't agree with you more, Randy. A wise, well respected shooter and load developer said once: "Speed is nifty. But, you can't miss 'em fast enough to kill 'em!" Add me to the list of hunters (and a competition shooter at times) that couldn't agree more with your disdain for LOOOONG range shooting, disdain starting at around 600 yards for most (SOONER for neophytes) and growing "exponentially" with range beyond that. Unless the shooter has a ballistic program that churned out reference tables or graphs for trajectories in conditions present for that day or particular shot, including barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, refined (test verified) ballistic coefficient, target departure angle from horizontal, gyroscopic presses, and other coefficients that come into play beyond 1000 yards, and we haven't even mentioned WIND conditions and variations along the line of flight! Oh, yeah...Is terminal energy and bullet performance at terminal velocity important??? Point made, and thanks!

You said it all there bud,....& that come'n from a longrange target practice/shooter addict, I have got the sickness, but do NOT hunt that way....200M MAX. with bigger cals., 125M Max. w/.223 all at only the best conditions & standing only.....PERIOD !!
Shoot long range at inanimate targets like Steel , paper, not animals . Work on your hunting skills of a silent approach to animals that are in a comfortable shooting range .
I just met a guy who can hit a deer in the heart everytime from a k away. I agree with the sentiment but if you know your own capabilities then why not
Why not? When you shoot at something 1,100 yards away (1 km), that thing can easily move several feet before the bullet arrives. If that results in a clean miss, OK, but it increases the chances of a wounding shot exponentially. Shooting at great distance is fun. Hunting big game animals is fun. Let's not get these two activities confused with one another.
@jake the snake What it comes down to is respect for the animals in which we hunt . I would never want to lose respect among my hunting piers and more importantly the non hunting general public . This is why it’s paramount that individuals like the real gunsmith use their forums to relay this message . It’s a message of hunter ethics that we should all follow .
Wow your my reloading hero! I also load ammo to fit a specific rifles chambers but let’s not forget 99% of people who shoot rifles don’t hand load or reload their ammo. The thing these new cartridges don’t do is claim to be the absolute best. They claim to be very accurate and suitable for a given task. The Creedmoor and PRC cartridges are very excellent for people who are not gunsmith’s and reloaders. If only the real gunmakers and ammo makers could work together to make the old cartridges work to their fullest capability without hand loading you would be at peace.
I'm surprised the 7 mm weatherby magnum wasn't mentioned. I was certain it was one of your favourites. I will one day have one and use it on elk here in Saskatchewan. Thanks for sharing.
I have a remington sendero two 7 magnum, I have a ton of nosler trophy grade 168 grain in ammunition. My weapon doesn't like this ammunition, 300 hundred yards or less I can get or kill a deer, Sometimes I get a Round or two that has a mind of it's own. What ammunition do you recomend. Thanks for your wisdom and answer , in advance.
I have only hunted whitetails I use a 44 magnum revolver most of my shots are 35 yards or closer I have killed deer with a rifle out to 380 yards but I don't have access to that private land anymore I would like to try elk hunting not this year but maybe next year I would like to see what everyone's favorite caliber for elk hunting is and do any of my fellow hunters on here use a 30/06 for elk hunting or is it not enough for elk hunting I would like to know
Hi and wow! You have many interesting videos. How many of your max load rounds will go through your guns before you need to re barrel? Are you using any barrel coatings? How much do you think they improve barrel life? Are there special precautions needed with coated barrels? thanks.
All the long range craziness is from long range target shooting , people think just cause u bang steel at a 1000 that u have the terminal ballistics to take game at that distance . U more than likely dont
@@johnt4060 ok so 1,000 ft lbs is enough with which bullet? This is the kind of thought process that get idiots into trouble. 1,000 ft lbs will work with a 150 nosler ballistc tip but with a 180 barnes ttsx at that energy you have enough energy to punch a 30 caliber hole and let the animal die a mile a way.
@@johnt4060 most bullets reccomend 1300fps for reliable expansion, with the exception of the federal TLR which guarantees at 1100fps. And the last 300RUM i built for a guy with 210vlds came into the transonic zone at 1400yds
My first hunting rifle was a Remington 700 BDL in 300 Winchester Magnum. Probably overkill for my area, but it's a fantastic caliber and rifle. The "new" 30 caliber stuff doesn't honestly do anything that it won't.
@@PBVader Not correct at ALL, the SAMMI chamber design of the 300 PRC is WAY better at obtainng accuracy from different types of ammo than any SAMMI 300 Win Mag chamber. It can fire heavier bullets at higher velocities for the same PSI than a 300 Win Mag. There is a massive difference in the easily obtaiend performance in the 2.
@@christopherbenfield7848 I have yet to see that in the data, although admittedly PRC is no very high of a priority. To be honest I would rather the PRC over the winmag specifically for the reloading, as I am fond of the 300s. But now because of your comment I'll just not buy into a lie while everyone does their own homework.
@@PBVader 🤣 what Lie? Trust me you don't have to take my word for it. Things on paper don't reflect real life in some cases. Having built rifles for several customers in both calibers and used both.. the PRC is WAY easier to develope effective loads and with more aerodynamic/heavier projectiles...As for lies...the guy making these videos is out of touch. His thinking is 30-40 years behind... when velocity is ALL that mattered.. things have moved on.
I agree with 100% . I also am real concerned with the advanced bow they are making . There was a spike bull I was seeing with an arrow though it's jaws . What a way to go and FWP won't let you finish them off !
Hi Randy, another fact filled video. I agree with everything you said here. I don't understand people taking super long shots, when they don't have the killing power at those ranges. Also, bragging about how they are loading over max published loads to make their gun what it's not. That's why I have multiple guns for multiple reasons. Maybe I'm just to old.... God bless all.
I really enjoy watching your videos I am also a 7 mm and 270win guy I know you can get better velocities out of some powders but my thing that I've run into is temperature sensitive powders IMR 4831 one of my favorite powders but on a cold day one morning I blew the brisket out of a small Doe on doe day she was around 218 yards I'm sighted in dead on at 200 yards I could never figure out what the problem was yes I did recover the animal but I always wondered why that 130 grain Nosler accubond dropped so much , I was bipod down and knew I did everything right I did not flinch it was a smooth shot , I realized it was the powder that was being 10 temperature sensitive that cold morning, I was a shooting 270win loading 57.5 grains imr-4831 velocity 3040 feet per second 22 inch barrel Remington 700 since then I went to 60gr of H4831 and actually picked up about about another 30 feet per second which brought me to around 3070 feet per second with same accuracy now with that being said 3070 ft per second from a 22 inch barrel 270 is pretty good in my book but is still behind from the original performance of the 270 Winchester which was around 3150fps I heard you mention reloder 26 I would like to try it but I'm scared of powders that are not temperature stable also not for sure if I'm going to get much more velocity also I'm wondering how the accuracy will hold up out of that 22 inch Barrel, any one else have experiences has anyone else had this problem before powders been temperature sensitive h4831 has work good for me in 7 rem Mag ,270 win and 2506rem it's also temperature stable but I like trying new things
Oh how I sure do love my 300 RUM. I have a Remington 700 Long Range in 300 RUM, I do need to have the barrel threaded for a brake though because it is a romper
Thank you for your vast knowledge. Can you do a segment on the 300 win mag. That is what I really love. My rifle is just a factory M77 Ruger build but shoots well. Most information is lacking on reloads everyone does something different and it's not helpful. I shoot no further than 500 yards and try to keep it 300 or less. I thank you again. If you have any information it would be a great help.
In my opinion, the maximum ethical range for someone is that range he can hit a 10 inch pie plate 100% of the time with a cartridge delivering the required energy at that distance. My gun can deliver the energy at 400 yards, but I start missing that plate at 200. So 200 yards is my max range. This means I can shoot a nice shooting cartridge without having to shoot a magnum that beats the snot out of me every time I pull the trigger. Sure wish I figured this out in my youth. Thanks for the vid.
As always, I love your videos. I'm curious if you have much experience with the 6.5x284? I'm shooting a savage 110 predator 1:8 with a 143grn eld x. In your opinion what would be the best powder for maximum performance in this cartridge. Thanks,
I've watched many of your videos this is the 1st one I seen that you mentioned the 28 Nosler. If the 28 Nosler and the 7mm and the 7mm ultra mag were loaded to the full Performance . What would be the difference between these Cartridges Thank you.
One iteresting thing is that 7 mm Rem Mag in 160 to 175 shoots a bit over 3000. You can do 3000 plus with the larger cases with heavier bullets. I dont think you need heavier bullets than 180 in 7 mm. yet you can to 200 Grns
Randy thanks for sharing your vast knowledge ! Would like you to comment on the 7 STW in won of your videos . I have had good luck with this cartridge !…….
Randy you talked in another video about an old slide rule for finding correct burning rate to case capacity. Could you show or explain more of what that is? Thank you.
In the beginning of the video I was wondering if Randy would address a longer magazine. This is a primary factor when seating bullets close to the lands. If you are not feeding rounds in the breech by hand you need a larger magazine. Very important when ordering a custom rifle.
Love my .300 RUM with 200 gr Accubonds over Retumbo or RL-25 never could get the LR Accubonds to group well in a few rifles. I agree im not taking them real far shots.
I asked him sort of the same, but for a 338 Win mag that I wanted to ream the throat to use 250 Grns. Answer magazine will not take such a long cartridge. Measure the Mag and see if your choice will fit. Wby have long throated chambers. Mag is the meassure and handload up
Agreed 1000% all this "snipery" is not ethical.but on the load to performance I inherited a 3006.now I'm a Texas/Miss. whitetail n Muley hunter wasn't into the ol 06 too much till I got this one it's a rem 700 Alaskan Titanium it was set up with a Jewell trigger and wearing a Zeiss 4.5-14x44 conquest .here's the part that one it for me it shoots handloaded 150 gr accubonds at just over 3050 fps 5 shots covered with a dime with 69 gr. of RL ?? powder.absolutely bang flop DRT on deer hogs n exotics n such out to my limit of 400 yards.my question is if I keep my shots under 400 and wait for good angle With good shot placement is that 150 accubond suitable for elk in your opinion. Or should I go on up to a180 and keep shots under 300
I thought the PRC was meant to compete with the 300 Win, not the 300 RUM. It is a marketing scheme, but so was a Nosler Partition once upon a time, or proprietary weatherby brass. I like the idea of solving the win mag loophole where you can't seat the heavier slugs out without turning into a single shot or running out of throat without custom work. Custom work has its place, I'm a craftsman too, but I actually think the logic behind the prc is okay here.
No. Since I developed this around 35 years ago, there are several calibers that have come out, very close to it. To get my cartridge there are multiple handloading steps to get the case and at this time there are no manufacturers that have capacity to start on a "new to them" cartridge.
I'd like your knowledge on the best 28 Nosler cartridge. I hunt Moose ,Deer and Black bear.. im looking at a nosler 160gr accubond. Or Nosler trophy grade 175 accubond LR
This 7mm you have developed, is there a video on this? I have been intrested in the 7mm and 7mm mag. for awhile. And I'm a midwestern hunter with a love for the 45/70 at 32gr of 4198, 405 bullet. How can anything mentioned improve on it except distance?
I Like your videos! Do you have any on "proper throats" For 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag? Ive been reloading for awhile, but am restricted to the factory chambers I own. I've been wanting to get a custom barrel for long range shooting. I find all factory barrels are "short for long bullets" Unless its a 6.5 Creedmoor or 300 PRC etc. And most factory rifles don't have optimal twist for long heavy bullets.
7MM Rem: my reamer cuts a throat .350 long at .277 bore diameter. Allows long bullets to be seated for optimum performance. .300 Win: my reamer cuts a throat .360 long at .300 bore diameter, allows bullets to b seated for optimum performance. Thanks for watching. Stay safe and well.
The biggest difference between the calibers mentioned in the video is the 300 PRC is still within Saami specifications with heavy bullets loaded out far. I speculate that less than 5% of customers are willing to deal with custom chamber/ ammo. You won’t get the performance in factory ammo and rifles. The market will follow the prc cartridges because of easy access.
Please comment on cartridge neck length and throat life, I notice the wapiti express has a long neck. Your comments on rl 26 with the 270 is spot on. Im getting 3100fps with a 150gr!
Mr Selby, I really like your videos, as the content is superb. I own a 300WM Remington Sendero that I'm having rebarreled to a 1 in 8 twist, and I own an M65 TIKKA 270 Heavy Barrel. I'm in the UK, and unfortunately, due to some BS legislation, Hodgdon powders are pretty much gone, though Reloder and Vihtavouri powders are readily available. I'll try some RL 26 in my 270, but haven't seen that reloading data / combination yet. Would you recommend RL 26 for 300 Win Mag with 225 or 230 grain bullets? Thanks for your great videos.
I can't comment as I've not used 225 gr or 230 gr weight bullets in a .300 Win. Experiment with different combinations of powder, primers, cases and bullet weights to find the most accurate load for each particular rifle. Thanks so much for watching from the UK!
Now that hunting season is over I'm having problems loading for my 28 nosler . I was loading with H1000 could not get the 168 LRX barns to shoot well so I switched to barns 150 ttsx was able to shoot a muley doe in North Dakota with my nephew 240 yards. Would like to get the 168 to shoot better what powder would you recommend to try im almost out of H1000 so now would be a good time to change
I get great results from my 28 Nosler with 168 grain Nosler AccuBond LR bullets and Retumbo. That's my go to combo for mulies, pronghorns and whitetails.

It's not the "entire generation"
that's unethical. Just like your entire generation wasn't all ethical. It's individuals who shouldn't be hunting in the first place.
@@sgtstedanko7186 Fair enough. Absolutely right and I'll try to be more careful.
God bless.
Wish I would of found this channel long ago. Thank You Sir. Excellent video.
Thank you and welcome. We've only been up for 18-19 months, so you should have time to catch up.
My favorite long range target shooting. Is Winchester model 70 in 7mmstw..awesome gun and cartridge
Thank You for Sharing! There will be stars in your crown! Wishing You & Yours the Very Best!
Mr. Randy you are a great American. Please keep up the good work.
Great video on the subject. I enjoy hearing and learning about your methods. Thank you for all the time and effort you both place into these.
Good job Randy and Cathy. 👍
So what exactly is full potential. It seems like it’s the same thing that you preach against, that being long range hunting
Great video sir thank you for taking your time to share your knowledge with us. GOD BLESS and great shooting Amen.
Carry on! 🙂
Thank you for the lessons Randy.
Love the stories, id love to sit and watch you at work and learn the knowledge of your real gunsmith teachings..
You need to make it a hour-long session I really enjoy listening to you. Thank you for your video

Wow I wish I found this guy years ago.awsome information and thank you so much for doing this video great info!
Thank you for these video's, you are a very informative man, you and gunblue490 are the two best!
I just got a Remington 300 Winchester Magnum and started loading for it. First big magnum rifle I’ve ever owned.
thesheepman220 you’ve got a great rifle to. My 300 loves my reloads. GOD BLESS
To help save you money experimenting stick to the slow powders and stay above 165 grains. 👍
70 grains imr 4350 under 180 gr bullet works good
That is a powerful pack of cartridges you have!Great show,Nosler sporting handgun is what I use in my carry gun 357 sig 124 1513fps.
Enjoy the info. Randy, Thank you.
Are going off charts
Thanks Randy. Keep on telling the truth and don't listen to easily hyped FPS guys.
Words of WISDOM
Woe wiser words and simple common sense !I love my 300 Wby and 300 rum ,you couldnt talk me into a 6.5 creedmore or 300 nosle rall the hype behind advertising on "new calibers "cant make for volume in case capacity and now all these new shows are promoting buying their expensive 7000.00 plus rifles with 2500-3500$optics and their special shootings schools still doesnt make up for common sense and practical limits on game, well said ,well said
YES SIR , totally agreed from Australia
As always youre very enlightening, keep it coming!
Couldn't agree with you more, Randy. A wise, well respected shooter and load developer said once: "Speed is nifty. But, you can't miss 'em fast enough to kill 'em!"
Add me to the list of hunters (and a competition shooter at times) that couldn't agree more with your disdain for LOOOONG range shooting, disdain starting at around 600 yards for most (SOONER for neophytes) and growing "exponentially" with range beyond that.
I’d take your advice anytime sir GOD BLESS.

People need to get back to hunting and leave the long-range shooting (which is also fun) at the range.
Wapiti!! What a great name. We have some good size ones here in Fiordland, New Zealand
I opt for more case capacity such as a 7mm-300 Wby or my 7mm-.404 Wapiti Express.
I built my first 7mm Wby in 1970.
U more than likely dont
jay B1134
He said the 300 Remington Ultra has well over 1,000lbs of energy at 1000yds. That’s more than plenty to effectively kill deer at that range
Recently aquired a 270 win. I will be looking into that RL-26 and seating depths.
Randy, I would LOVE TO SEE:
RANDY SELBY HAND LOADING AT ITS BEST MANUAL......
THERE WOULD BE MANY THAT WOULD LOVE THAT SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE. .....
My first hunting rifle was a Remington 700 BDL in 300 Winchester Magnum. Probably overkill for my area, but it's a fantastic caliber and rifle. The "new" 30 caliber stuff doesn't honestly do anything that it won't.
umm yes yes they do
The only thing the new 30s do better is the lack of belt, making resizing easier. Everything else is within a thin blonde one of each other.
Thanks!
God bless you and yours.
Give em hell Mr. Randy
What would be the difference between these Cartridges
Thank you.
No deer or elk should notice the 200 Fps Dif
One iteresting thing is that 7 mm Rem Mag in 160 to 175 shoots a bit over 3000. You can do 3000 plus with the larger cases with heavier bullets. I dont think you need heavier bullets than 180 in 7 mm. yet you can to 200 Grns
i think 1000 yards is great for targets.
350 yards is a long way for hunting . Randy is totally correct
Randy thanks for sharing your vast knowledge ! Would like you to comment on the 7 STW in won of your videos . I have had good luck with this cartridge !…….
Love these videos thanks
thanks Randy I agree. High Cathy.
Hi Yogi Bear from us both! :) Thanks for your continued support!
Randy you talked in another video about an old slide rule for finding correct burning rate to case capacity. Could you show or explain more of what that is? Thank you.
It was the Powley Computer Slide rule. Cathy just checked and there are two on eBay. They are long gone, for the most part.
Thanks for watching.
In the beginning of the video I was wondering if Randy would address a longer magazine. This is a primary factor when seating bullets close to the lands. If you are not feeding rounds in the breech by hand you need a larger magazine. Very important when ordering a custom rifle.
Well said
thank you.
Love my .300 RUM with 200 gr Accubonds over Retumbo or RL-25 never could get the LR Accubonds to group well in a few rifles. I agree im not taking them real far shots.
Great video very knowledgeable! Can bullets be seated this far out on a factory mark v weatherby in 300 weatherby?
I asked him sort of the same, but for a 338 Win mag that I wanted to ream the throat to use 250 Grns. Answer magazine will not take such a long cartridge. Measure the Mag and see if your choice will fit. Wby have long throated chambers. Mag is the meassure and handload up
Agreed 1000% all this "snipery" is not ethical.but on the load to performance I inherited a 3006.now I'm a Texas/Miss. whitetail n Muley hunter wasn't into the ol 06 too much till I got this one it's a rem 700 Alaskan Titanium it was set up with a Jewell trigger and wearing a Zeiss 4.5-14x44 conquest .here's the part that one it for me it shoots handloaded 150 gr accubonds at just over 3050 fps 5 shots covered with a dime with 69 gr. of RL ?? powder.absolutely bang flop DRT on deer hogs n exotics n such out to my limit of 400 yards.my question is if I keep my shots under 400 and wait for good angle
With good shot placement is that 150 accubond suitable for elk in your opinion. Or should I go on up to a180 and keep shots under 300
Spot on Sir thank you.
Nothing better than the Speer 200 grain spitzer in thirty caliber. You get your money's worth and it is LETHAL.
Do you have any videos about the wapiti express? Sounds like a very interesting cartridge
No. Since I developed this around 35 years ago, there are several calibers that have come out, very close to it. To get my cartridge there are multiple handloading steps to get the case and at this time there are no manufacturers that have capacity to start on a "new to them" cartridge.
I'd love to try the 300PRC with Berger 245 EOL Elite Hunter from unknown munitions, sound intresting.
On your 300 RUMS, how much jump are you doing with the Nosler Acubond LR? What powder? FPS average? Thanks for all the valuable insight
I seat .030 from the rifling. WC860.
Thanks for watching!
Great video sir, what powder are you using in the 300 Rum.
Thanks. I use WC860, a pulled down, slow military ball powder, none better.
Thanks for watching!
I like to start loading a little below accuracy load & work up slowly .
To bad you can not get hogdon powder because h1000 is amazing with the 230 bergers.
hello Mr. Selby. What is maximum length i can seat a .270 bullet out to in a standard length remington 700 action?
This will all depend on bullet make, ogive shape and design.
Thanks for watching.
