Apple Refurbished... What's The Catch?

- In this video we finally take a look at the inside of and Apple Refurbished iPhone. The phone we purchased was the iPhone 12 Pro 512GB because that is the only Apple Refurbished iPhone available in Canada right now but looking at the American website there was a lot more options and deals on refurb iPhone and other Apple products too!
We took a look at the unboxing experience for an Apple Certified Pre-Owned product, show you how to test a used / refurbished phone properly and also did a full teardown investigating the refurb job done by Apple. What we found inside is worth taking a look at and at the end I give my opinion on Apple Refurbished as well as how it compares to some of the other refurbished iPhones I've made videos about before!
Don't forget to check out my other videos on refurbished phones. I've looked at phones refurbished by Amazon, Wish, Best Buy and even GAMESTOP. Each have their pros and cons and results may vary but refurbished is a great way to save some money and keep phones out of landfills.

Can you still get AppleCare with a refurbished phone?
Hi

What about accessoires? Like the 3rd gen AirPods?
@@ryanb5308 same thing
if they r brand new, then why r they selling it at a discounted price?
@@18PregnantAndProud because they are technically not brand new, so they simply can't sell them as brand new
When the new MBP was released I was told by the Apple employee to order a refurbished. Any recalled issues would have already been handled and for less of a price.
Yup
Plus these devices have had a human eye and hand touch to repair them, then tested to the same standards as new devices. I always go for the refurbished, as it also keeps some e-waste out of the landfills (I don't want all those battery heavy metals leeching into the groundwater).
Everyone who buys a brand new device is basically a guinea pig for te company (any company).
One big thing he didn’t mention is refurbished devices typically have limited warranty which means you can add apple care
Exactly what I was looking for. That’s one reason Apple Refurbished have an edge over others

About the IMEI, apple actually completely rewrites it. The boards get a new IMEI, as the previous one could be tied to a carrier/someone's account
This is a *very* important consideration, and it's good that Apple assign a new IMEI. 👍
As mentioned in my own comment I used to own an iPhone XR - Bought secondhand from a local pawnbrokers. Worked perfectly fine with my SIM when I put it in, but as I only ever used it on wifi it lived on airplane mode and never touched the cellular network. 📶
Two years later, and I sell it on eBay. The buyer found that it would not activate cellular, and was getting messages to the effect of „SIM not allowed“ and „Barred device“. I accepted their return and took it back to the pawnbroker to investigate - It turned out the previous owner had knowingly defaulted on their cellular carrier account, and the carrier had blocked the phone for non-payment. Because I never used it on cellular, it took 18 months for this to come to light. 😲
On the bright side; The pawnbroker - In line with the traditions of their business - Accepted return of the device for the original purchase price and presumably took the previous owner to the cleaners over it...But that certainly got me off the idea of ever paying top dollar for secondhand phones! 😨
@ilyasg2108 - Thanks.

@@HanchakovskyThis one was expensive because of the storage. And Phone Repair Guru uses Canadian dollars, iPhones are sold at higher prices in CAD. I’m assuming you’re from the US btw

My only problem with Apple refurb is it’s always priced so close to new to make people think “f*ck it might as well buy new for a couple bucks more”. Also they never EVER refurb current or even last gen iPhones.
Probably the point for why Apple does what they do.
They don't rufubissh last gen or current? So u mean they don't refurbish anything lol for example 15 came out so u mean they only refurbish the 14?
@@ClavinZKL I mean they don’t ever sell the current gen or last gen in their refurb store. If you look now, you will only see iPhone 12s being sold refurbished. That’s because they know if they sold anything too recent, that would potentially harm their new iPhone sales.

I bought all of my Apple devices on their refurbished store, that's an iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro. They are typically about 15% off but here in the UK Apple just cleared out a load of old iPhone 11s for £379 which is nearly half the original list price so if you don't mind buying something that is just a couple of generations old you can get some great deals.

Probably ex-demo or unsold/forgotten UK-held stock, I'd imagine. If you happened to buy one, does it have a UKCA mark on the box? 🙂
Actually, I might head to the Apple refurb site later. I know they're close to obsolescence (If not past it) but I miss my Xr, and I'm not buying another one through a reseller after the experience I had with that one!
(Previous owner defaulted on their account after I'd bought it, and the network provider blocked the phone without my awareness.)
I used to work for a Foxconn affiliate and they basically used all new parts for everything, but the motherboard. There are a few different device assembly and disassembly lines that take the phone all the way apart, do extensive testing of the motherboards by plugging them into devices that check that everything is still working, the motherboard gets flashed with new information, like the IMEI and all of the parts are serialized to the device and assembled. They use all of the same equipment that the normal assembly uses.
They may refurbish some of the other parts, but at the end of the day, these are basically new phones.
There shouldn't be any fingerprints, so whoever was working on that part, wasn't wearing their finger cots.
The screws aren't tightened by hand, but with an electric torque screwdriver that is calibrated to not over tighten. They can still go in sideways, but it shouldn't be overtightened unless the calibration went off. I'm surprised you didn't have a device with a torn graphite layer anywhere. It was so common to see the screen with the torn graphite layer that it wasn't even considered an issue. (maybe that changed at some point)
0:54 I think the editor forgot to remove that part lol
I'm surprised it didn't come out the box charged at around 50%
God knows how long this phone was sitting dead at 0%, not good for batteries in the long-term.
Maybe it’s old stock because it looked like it was still on iOS 15
When I decided to buy an iPhone 13 Mini, I first did it through the Apple refurb page. At first the only odd thing I noticed was that the gap between the screen and the top bezel was a little wider than usual, allowing dust to enter, but nothing I couldn't remove manually with the help of something thin. The real problem came about a week later, when all mobile data functionality stopped working regardless of which SIM I was using. I took it to an Apple Store and they confirmed that the antenna was malfunctioning. The funny thing is that they couldn't exchange it for me there, because refurbs are web-only and therefore returns can only be made from there. Anyway, I returned it without any problems and simply bought a new one on Amazon. The new one has a perfectly sealed screen, so yes, that wasn't normal either. I suspect the antenna was the component that was originally malfunctioning on the original refurbished phone, and the technician just failed to repair it properly. I know my case could just be bad luck, but I just wanted to put my two cents in here for everyone. On another note, the 13 Mini is my favourite phone and I couldn't be happier with its form factor!
Don’t see any 13 minis on apple site yet

Got my 12 Pro Max the same way, felt just like a new one. Definitely worth going for if your are on a budget.
My brother bought a iPad Pro refurbished by apple and everything is just like it's new. For the price this is really good.
I bought an iPhone 11 Pro Max 512 GB Midnight Green last year and it’s been great, but in January, it kept having unexpected shutdowns so they had to exchange it for another one
Nice vid. I expected that there would be errors in Apple's renewed iPhone program. But hey, it's as you say, it's Apple, you have to trust and refurbished cell phones can obviously have minimal errors. Saludos desde Argentina! 🇦🇷🙂
Great video. Question, what is the best screen cleaning spray I can buy for my iPhone and iPad?
It is common to have rework stations on PCB manufacturing lines where assemblers modify boards that have issues. So they likely also do the same wherever they refurbish products.
I would check the MB as well for possible repair done to it
My dad got an Apple Refurbished M1 MBP 2 years ago for almost 250 dollars cheaper than the actual price. It seems like a much better deal than brand new especially since it looks, feels and functions practically like a brand new laptop. I would never have thought to even go for refurbished from any other company, but since apple is so extensive in its testing, it doesn't feel any less than buying a new one.

I recently got my wife a refurb M1 iPad Pro. In 2022 I got a refurb M1 MacBook Air. Both were like new. Batteries new in both. You can certainly save money buying from other companies but I got decent discounts on essentially new devices with full warranties.

The iPhone makers will be tensed while watching your videos 😅
After I got my replacement airpods, they felt cheaper. The hinge was odd. But in the end they worked perfectly.
I have an M1 Mac Mini I purchased from Apple refurbished. It replaced my late 2015 iMac, also from Apple Refurb. I gave that to my cousin and it's still chugging along. I also bought a 13 Mini from eBay refurbished for a 2nd phone for family calls only that came with 100% battery health and no scratches or other issues. That was cheaper than Apple's. Still, Apple refurbished has a decent record.
just curious, is the battery health full?
Yes. They replace the battery in refurbished devices.
The small clip of Tim Cook LOL about the charger made my day :D
I bought my 12 pro refurbished through eBay. First one I got had the “display message” for a screen replacement. Bluetooth didn’t work but I sent it back and the new one I got works fine. Paid $500 for a 12 Pro 256gb. The new one doesn’t have a display message so I’m pretty happy.
I got my MacBook Pro refurbished and if I didn’t know any better, I’d swear it was brand new.
0:42 As we, software devs, say: it always often works.
Did you rip the 5G antenna flex when you were removing the board?
You've the Flipper Zero device. What do you use it for?
Well, I never fell in love with Apple's devices, due to the locked down nature of their products. But I study mobile technology, which frankly includes mobile apps as well, and I am a developer/programmer (not my employment, just a hobby I do), and making mobile apps is actually something I'm also interested in. Guess I'll have to get myself at least some refurbished iPhone to get into multiplatform development more, keeping it for development and testing purposes. Android will however still be my primary mobile device OS.
I know this is most definitely just bad luck, but I ordered a refurbished iPhone 12 Pro from Apple at the beginning of the year and had to return it just a few days after because it started bootlooping all of the sudden.
I contacted Apple support and they sent me a replacement phone, but that one didn’t seem to be refurbished as the battery was at 93% (dropped to 89% just a few days later💀) and the frame had scratches around the lightning port.
I returned this phone as well and thankfully got my money back.
I’ve just been very unlucky but I won’t buy refurbished again. I safed all of my money to buy a brand new iPhone 13 Mini a couple of months later and this one is working flawlessly. I simply cannot trust refurbished phones anymore. I’ve had too many bad experiences with them. The issues with the 12 Pro I ordered were the icing on the cake…
yikes, that's some bad luck

The rock in Touch ID man that caught me off guard 😂😂
Many, many years ago I had a faulty iPhone 4 (sticky home button) which I took back to Apple on like the 350th day of the 365 day warranty and they said (at that time anyway) that whenever you get a replacement phone through the warranty that late in the cycle it would a "certified refurbished" similar to what they sell nowadays, the guy said that everything is a new part except the motherboard. I think things like fingerprints on the internals and overtightened screws happen on new phones too, Friday afternoon jobs are the worst 😂
I got an m2 air refurbished and it works perfectly for me. Well worth it if you don’t wanna pay retail.
I've got a CPO 2020 11" iPad Pro. Never had any complaints about it, it arrived looking perfect (but yeah, with the all-white CPO box with no product imagery.)
I really don't think I should try to open it to explore its insides, though. Definitely don't have any of the tools for that.
For ones who are still in school/college, this is a bit of a tough sell for anything other than iPhones, because you can get student discounts on brand new devices. I got a $200 discount on my 16" M1 Pro two years ago when I got it new.
Louis Rossman has documented cases about refurb MacBooks having water damaged boards, etc. I think there's still some room for error, but I also think that refurb can be a good deal and better than some random eBay sellers. May want to pop the cover and inspect your boards if ordering refurb MacBooks though. There's also some accusations about Apple maintaining sweatshop like conditions for the companies they subcontract to for repair and refurb.
But was it fully functional? I mean if it has mineral deposits from the water but still is 100% functional I wouldn’t necessarily mind.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I don't think that Apple does component level repair. I'm sure they have a proper tester, and they replace faulty module(s) based on the testresults.
You should inspect the board as well. Jesa Jones from iPad rehab gets lots of apple refurbished devices that have really bad liquid damage. They’re often “fixed” really poorly and will eventually fail. This is because the refurbishment process is outsourced to the lowest bidder in China. Apple does visually inspect these devices really carefully, but only the outside. All the terrible board repairs aren’t visible.

I'd just wait for my wife to get her 15 series and take her 12 pro. A 13 pro would have been tempting.
Yet, I found a good example of FB marketplace with 256GB of storage for $550. Met the seller in Starbucks, verified that it had 91% battery health and was unlocked.
I'd moved my SIM from my iPhone7 (you read that right) and was up and running in less than an hour.
My phone had a bit of coffee in the lightning connector, cleaned it with a q tip then let it dry, the prompt is gone but now the screen acts up a little, rarely changes colors but mostly does small black lines on the top then shakes slightly, since it had to do with liquid, will it go away after a day or so from it drying or do I need to pay for it to be fixed?
Wow, ~2.5 years later, a 512 GB 12 Pro (the same phone I have, but mine's silver), is only half the cost now.
my iphone SE 2nd gen mic is weird, on phone calls people say that I sound really quiet when im screaming, its also like a few months old so Im surprised there are problems
I looked at getting one prior to buying my 15PM, and I am also in Canada. They only had 13PM with either the 512 or 1tb. For the cost, it was the exact same as buying a 15PM brand new, mind you my 15PM is 256. From my POV, unless you really want more storage but you are fixed to a specific budget, you are better off buying new than apple refurb. It's just hard to stomach paying 1900 when that's how much a brand new 15PM base model is.
