Hey -- I just wanted to say, Thank you for posting this! Our new very expensive AC was dripping water inside (so I tipped it back) -- then it made a loud sloshing noise (because the the parts inside were making contact with the water that had collected at the bottom)... I didn't know what to do. This is genius and fixed the problem. YOU ROCK!!

Dave, thanks for the awesome video. My air conditioner was working fine until my city had three days of heavy, torrential rain that filled up my AC drip pan from the outside. After an hour of running my AC, I would hear a fan "clanging" noise and water would drip into my bedroom. I took a peek into my AC with a flashlight and sure enough, it was flooded with water so now I'm using your wick technique to get rid of the water. It's siphoning the water away as I write this message now.

@@ziabonsignore8786 I hope it works for you! The first year I used a couple old socks. That worked ok but I had to pull them out and clean them a few times. This year I used 2 strips of old Trader Joe's dishrags that are super absorbent. They have been working all season. If the water was leaking into your room, it sounds like you may need to tilt it down toward the outside more though.

This is an actually useful tip. DO NOT drill holes in your window/thru wall ac. That water is there for a reason, to improve evaporator efficiency. Have it professionally cleaned. But the paper towel trick here is great to clear it during especially humid times, or just change the water, without damaging the unit, but usually isn't necessary if you have your unit cleaned correctly. If you live in an apartment your maintenance can remove your unit and clean it properly, this should be done once a year. Don't hesitate to ask. I have mine cleaned april every year, just before summer.

Perfect fix! We have soo much humidity here in the south that there is way more water buildup in there, way more than the ac needs. Wicking is the answer! Would you please say why you are using two wicks? Is it to 'regulate' the water drainage? If so, we may need even more wicks. Thanks

This really is a genius solution but as you said, it only works for a few days and after that the towels lose their wicking action and have to be replaced. Because I didn't want to hang over the bushes to replace towels every 2-3 days, I just drilled a hole and was done with it. Just realize that both of these methods, towel and drilling, bring the water down to a level below the slinger ring that is designed to sling water over the condensor/evap so efficiency and longevity may be reduced. Small price to pay for not hearing gurgling, sloshing, and having water slung all over the inside of the unit and mold developing.

  • @Yophillips3272

It helps if you read the manual, I'm paraphrasing but it says there's a rubber plug under the AC, the water sloshes on the fan and helps it be more efficient but you can remove the plug if the noise is driving you insane. DO Not drill a hole in the AC.. if you have a newer Ac it probably has a plug.

    • @DAVE_WHITE

My question to you: should I remove those strips now? My aircon is no longer “frozen” -there’s absolutely no water at all. Doesn’t the aircon need some water to cool the coils since it is a slinger window aircon? Thanks, please reply when you can.
PS I clean my unit each season, and it’s tilted correctly. ( test with a level)

My tray must be situated more to the front of the unit, would have loved it to work 😢

I've had a cough for a year I think. Always feel like I'm clearing my lungs. It started to feel more serious, so I ordered a new air purifier. The old one was going out. Not in use. It dawned on me that my bedroom window unit is probably moldy. Never really cleaned more than the filter. I through it out yesterday and installed a brand new unit. Also, started running the old air purifier for now. Guess what? I feel amazing. Cough is already 90% gone. I've probably been breathing mold for years. No telling how much better I will soon feel. I'm staying ontop of it this time. I'm posting this incase someone else is having similar issues and like me, never figured out what the issue was. Clean air feels amazing. Also, anyone with alergies; invest in a good air purifier or two. If there are no allergies in your home, you will not have allergies in doors at least.

It is supposed to do that. Humidity is removed from inside your home by the evaporator coils (part that gets cold), drips into the pan, and then splashed onto the condenser coils by the bottom of the fan blades. Then the water evaporates off the coils pulling out extra heat. If it is not leaking into your home, but you have splashing sounds, that means it is functioning properly. You should always hear splashing if you listen close. Have it cleaned once a year, it will keep lots of surface area for evaporation, and keep efficiency high. If you have a bunch of gunk on your coils and in the condensation pan, it operates extremely poorly and drains electricity, and can become a health hazard due to mold. But a splashing sound with no leaking means its working properly as designed. I cannot stress enough how important it is to clean the unit with coil cleaner yearly. It's not an optional thing, it's necessary maintenance that will save you far, far more on your electric bill yearly than it costs.
People who drill holes in the condensate pan at the back of the unit are killing the efficiency of said unit. If it was leaking into the home all they needed to do was have it cleaned (or learn to do it yourself).

@@NieveBlanca-tp3xd No let it build on it's own! The most important thing is to take it apart every 6months to a year and clean it. As long as it's clean, it's going to fill to the point where the fan is splashing just a little water and you can't hear it. Nominally there's just a few centimeters of water pooled in the back, and the very tip of the fan blade is sloshing a little on the condenser coils. It'll only build up to aplash level if it's all gunked up.

FWIW, i clean my AC at the end of each season after removing from the window. I take it almost completely apart, making sure to remove any debris that accumulates, then with gentle dish soap and a hose, I hose down only the correct areas - then allow to dry in the sunshine.

@@nekomancey4149 Is this is a new thing? My Old AC Window units never made this sloshing noise. But my new ones do.

My a/c is on a second stir window and is taped in every well..an it’s spitting water at me in front. Any other ideas?

@@DAVE_WHITE Mine is also in a second story window, tilted back plenty, it came with a drain hole already, but after just a couple months of use started making sloshing noises and occasionally spits water out the front. But most it's the sloshing that is annoying. I guess I would be surprised if it got clogged or dirty that fast.

Hey man my ac is full of old water and leaves, everyone neglected to take care of it. Do you have a video for how to disassemble the tray?

@@DAVE_WHITE thanx, much appreciated but it was honestly easier and more worth while to just buy a new one, the thing needed to be entirely cleaned out from top to bottom.

Omg I just moved into my new apartment and I’m guessing these idiots installed it wrong because it’s not tilted back it’s tilted forward ! So the water leaks inside !!! Ugh I need to call my landlord ASAP

@@DAVE_WHITE Should a 3 month old AC make a loud sloshing noise? It's tilted back, there is a drain plug in the back corner. It occasionally spits water. It started doing it after the first month or so. It works fine, but the noise is annoying as hell.

GOOD INFORMATION, THE NEW DESIGN PUSHING WATER AROUND MIGHT WORK UP NORTH BUT IS A REAL ISSUE IN THE SOUTH WITH THE ADDITIONAL HUMIITY AND HEAVEY RAINS, YOU SIMPLY CANNOT LEAVE WATR SITTING IN THERE BECAUSE IT FEEDS MOLD AND MILDEW WHICH IS A HEALTH ISSUE. MY UNIT FROM SEARS WAS BLACK INSIDE, FAN BLADE AND FLOOR AND THOUGHT THE HOLE WAS PLUGGED AND WE FOUND NO HOLE....GRIILL IN BACK WAS BLACK AS WELL ABOUT AN INCH FROM THE FLOOR......YA CANNNOT LEAVE WATER SITTING IN THEIR TO FEED MOLD AND MILDEW! HEALTH ISSUE. THIS UNIT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO THE CONSUMERS PROTECTON AGENCY. WE HAD TO DRILL A HOLE AND YOU WOULD NOT BELEVE THE WATER THAT CAME OUT.........SIMPLE COMMON SENSE.
