Victoria Wood was like that, she could make you laugh and tear your heart out both at the same time... she was a Genius...and now she's gone, just like "Our Chrissie"...so sadly missed😢
This was very funny & very heartbreaking, which is an incredibly tricky thing to get right. Such a treat during lockdown to find all her sketches & shows. (And the Patricia Routledge 'Kitty' sketches that Victoria wrote for her : priceless, every line a snort aloud).

As attested to in her authorised biography "Let's do it" and by many who knew her, Victoria and her siblings were terribly neglected by their parents, it seems particularly her mother. As a result, Victoria's work is littered with neglectful parents, particularly neglectful mothers: e.g. Petula in Dinner Ladies, the mother in Pat and Margaret, who had to have the two daughters put in care.
And suddenly, after so many laughs, that amazingly touching moment. Vic could do that so well. And there's a the awful unspoken sadness at the end. Bless you Vic. I always loved you.

This is such a tragedy. Think about it: she's always wanted to swim the Channel (to get as far away from her parents as possible). She like's Bonnie Tyler (because she, herself, needs a hero). And she wanted to be in 'Annie' (because that's where she felt she belonged). How awful! Victoria wrote this so well, but I don't know if my analysis is right... I'll do double prayers tonight anyway.
absolutely, she was such a writing genius she left many paths you could take with this sketch, I took it to mean that she felt so lonely and detached she was prepared to risk her life just to wrench a scrap of love, affection and pride from her awful parents, who didn't even remember they also had other children, or where they where. Victoria Wood could make you laugh and tear your heart at the same time.. Genius, so sadly missed.
I went to School with a very Famous Chanel swimming, i alway's think of Alison Streeter, when i see this. btw Alison, well bloody done girl., R.I.P. Victoria, we have lost the funnest Lady in British Comedy, Heven's just got more fun!
