  • Happy Birthday Bafta, ITV, 07/11/2007 - a special routine by Vic, who as Richard Attenborough attests at the start, had been recognised with the most Bafta awards/nominations.

    To get 8 minutes out of a stupid line from a face cream commercial is quite a masterful thing. You get to the end, she just says goodnight and it's actually the perfect punchline because she set it up two minutes ago.

      Victoria actually performed for about 20 minutes, but it was trimmed to the 8 minutes we see here. Would love to see the edited parts as well.

      We're all on every list out there. There's no avoiding it now, companies sell your personal details to other company mailing lists, even when you're told they'll never sell on your details. I particularly notice that whenever I purchase something from, say, Amazon, within minutes I'm inundated with offers of the same item from numerous companies. Everyone's vying for your money. I often receive calls to my mobile phone asking if I'd like to discuss the recent car accident I was involved in! I've never been in a car accident, never even learned to drive! I have call blocking on my landline and mobile so if it reads 'unknown number' I don't answer.

    did you ever see her on Graham Norton? she was so uncomfortable and out of her safety zone bless her it was really uncomfortable to watch. she was a performer only on her own terms and she was brilliant when she was in charge. on graham norton she retreated inside herself as she often did cos she was so shy in company and it was not an easy watch. The private Victoria Wood was an entirely different person to the public Victoria Wood. One was real the other was constructed. Losing her was terrible loss.

    comedy goddess confirmed status aside, i always get the feeling that later on in her comedy career (the 2000s onward) she reeeeeeeeeeally didnt want to be doing it. she was always rye and rueful, but her earlier stand-up was always delivered very enthusiastically, whereas later appearances (on chat shows, too) were always shot through with an I-dont-care-anymore.
    i wished she would have stayed in comedy- her northerness makes her naturally prone to mawkishness when dealing with pathos, so her drama works left me cold, and i wish wish wish she had written something later in life that was a comedy but tremendously dark and lacerating- she has the skillset of dramatist and comedian, so it would have let her flex her varied writing and performing muscles- and it would have been in keeping with her comic disaffection toward herself.
    anyhoo

    • @ThomasAdamLamb
      @ThomasAdamLamb 5 лет назад

      Totally agree ! ... she seemed like it was a chore to some extent, her genius was observation but it feels she had possibly had enough! Maybe she was feeling unwell? However through it all she delivered with great style, even in this performance you can see glimpses of her natural talent. For me Pat and Margaret was her best followed by Dinnerladies, her ability to set a scene with only words made you feel you were actually there. God bless Vic! Rest well and thanks for the laughs!
