I'm still mourning her and Alan Rickman's deaths. It was a sad year for the world when they died. Victoria had the fantastic ability of making us laugh and cry at the same time.
First time I've seen this, I think. My emotions are all over the place, so beautiful, so classic Victoria and Julie, everything down to the air and the walks in the parks took me right back. Just breathtaking.
Well, im only 46 seconds in and already im filled with nostalgia at those blue launderette plastic carrier bags with the white handles that used to 'do up' at the top ! In 1981 a lot of kids would go to the launderette with their mothers. Even though the 80s is now seen as a time of wealth and prosperity, a lot of people didnt have washing machines at home. Kids now er days will never know the smell of a launderette or having to sit patiently, waiting for the cycle to finish.
Poppins123 I liked your spin cycle down memory lane: Some launderettes would have a tropical island, the sand like demerara sugar & colorful parakeets. Whilst sitting, one could meditate in tune with the final whirring of the spin dryer.
Superb writing, superb acting, and aching nostalgia for all the 80s details. Victoria could write poignant scenes as well as funny ones, and this is a little classic.
Victoria Wood's written dialogue within this fifty-two minute gem, is as sharp as a nail gun delivered on rapid fire. Sometimes I found myself having to stop & replay to fully understand the banter. Excluding "Frances" & "Jim" I counted 29 other characters the audience are introduced to: The script is a delight to hear, but it's also a challenge for the intellect to follow, because lines are spoken so rapidly. Classic comedy from one of our finest. V.W rip.
I couldn't understand most of it, neither could the captions. I don't know what kind of English that was, but there's a reason for having BBC Standard!
Awwwww never seen that its were lovley unlike dating today brilliant victoria, wood n Julie Walters can't believe Victoria's gone music made me cry at end 😢
"the price of a pan scrub is enough to make you emigrate' - somethings havent changed eh .. Fabulous dialog, such a blast from the past, loved every minute, Wood and Walters where a dream combination of talent
This story takes place over three consecutive xmases drama teacher Frances is single the first yr, meets Jim the next yr and they start a relationship and the next Xmas finds them together but struggling. Great character study ❤🎉
A genius script. And reminded me why my relationship with my partner has lasted all of 17 years - we're both introverts and stay away from each other when at home - but it actually works, we still like each other haha :o)
This is a gift that just keeps on giving. What a cast. It feels all early and not quite fully formed and brilliant. Even Carol Leeder! Playschool must have given her the day off.
Jim Bowen was the host of Bullseye, a TV darts show which was so bad it was good. He was a teacher-turned-standup comedian but I didn't know he'd done any acting. This play has just reminded me how romance can give way to boredom and then how tricky it is to find a more durable way to be together.
I’ve never seen that before and I loved it! 🥰 I love the end. Love isn’t perfect, it’s a game for two. But, love is real and can be beautiful sometimes if you let it. You just have to remember to not to be a total jerk, understand your part in the game and forgive when needed, even if it’s days later.
Brilliant writing by Victoria Wood. Generosity from Victoria Wood, giving funny lines to her “ensemble” of friends, overacting by Julie Walters as usual. It doesn’t get much better. RIP Victoria, Queen of British Comedy. The Pride of Prestwich. Gone too soon. Never to be forgotten.
How can you call that overacting? She underplays beautifully, always in possession of herself, and remarkably keeping track of her mood progression. Difficult stuff. All that surface trivia, with all that moodiness underneath. A real character study.
This film is the best thing I’ve seen in a long long time. I esp love the little bits where Frances talks to herself/her books, so real. Thanks so much for uploading!
I totally got Frances, she reminds me of me (but she's a lot funnier and prettier!) - can't live with anyone but you can still fall in love. So well done, thank you Victoria Wood, spot on as always.
never seen this before in full - only the odd clip. I really enjoyed this. Funny but also quite dramatic. Great drama acting and far removed from the off the wall stuff the team do in the As Seen On Tv stuff
Yes she is. I remember her making a guest appearance on Countdown, very sadly just before he passed. She was in Emerdale and Eastenders too, dont know if anyone else remembers
Wow, those girls hairstyles, reminds me of my school days so 80’s every one had those flicked fringes, 1981 I was 15 the Christmas with the family was just like ours, the phone was always in the hallway, sure it was so you wouldn’t be on the phone too long.
First time of seeing this, was shocked at people mentioning Victoria Wood in the past tense, I had no idea she had died, very sad news albeit late. I have not watched T.V for over 20 years, in fact I don't own one, I don't have a radio or take "news" papers ( I much prefer toilet tissue), I know I am out of touch with it all. Cancer is a terrible thing, and so unnecessary to die from it as the cure is out there, my late wife died of cancer after a 4 year battle. So very sad.
I haven't had a tv except for playing games on for over 20years either. Don't read papers or have a radio but it was everywhere, headlines in shops, etc. So sad
Jim Bowen would of been a great at other TV acting jobs, he was a run o the mill stand up but I recon he would of done very well, if ever he was given a chance
Would that TV companies and the BBC fund well-written single dramas like this today. Sadly, they are long gone. New drama has become the province of Netflix, HBO etc., available only to the well-off who can pay the subscriptions.
Julie Walters and Duncan Preston were actually having a relationship at one point. Julie had to intervene with Victoria for Duncan to get the part in "Pat & Margaret", after Jim Broadbent turned it down. It seems Victoria really drifted apart from Julie and Celia Imre in later years. Julie said after Victoria's death that it had become more of a working relationship and they hadn't been to each other's homes in many years. Celia said that she often felt bullied by Victoria and both she and Julie had said they would never tell Victoria anything sensitive as Victoria would have no qualms about using it in a sketch.
Victoria was very unsentimental, especially in terms of work, and was all the time looking for new collaborators. She had no qualms about casting fresher faces, which she tended to do more in her post 2000 work
@@DistantCousin I think she made Duncan screen test for the part, which he viewed as something of an insult given how much they'd worked together previously. The biography of Victoria "Let's do it" is really interesting. A lot of people have testified to how difficult she could be. A very "complex" character. Dawn French recalled how difficult it was working with her on their comic relief sketch. She also mentioned how surly and difficult she'd been when she came to stay with her in Cornwall once.
I don't know why I keep watching Victoria Wood stuff. I keep hoping for a gentle laugh and just end up in tears. Oh yeah, I remember, that is why. ❤

@@voulafisentzidis8830 Yes she did indeed
Julie Walters, a national treasure ! Victoria Wood always ahead of her time, always missed never forgotten. 😊
Victoria had an amazing talent for seeing humour and absurdity in humdrum everyday existence. She’ll never be forgotten

Victoria was a very lovable Genius rapper🥰
And put amazing actors and actresses together to act out her writing. Comedy and drama. Absolutely brilliant.
First time I have seen this, I have not seen Duncan that young.....🤩Victoria will always be missed....😍
Who thinks love was better before mobile phones? waiting for the phone to ring, surprises and letters
It's being young that makes it special. You're a bundle of hormones and it's all new and exciting.
Totally agree. It's treated like a commodity to be picked now .

We had a Hoover twin tub at home, which is hard work, and no tumble dryer so we often still used the laundrette.
Absolutely

Superb writing, superb acting, and aching nostalgia for all the 80s details. Victoria could write poignant scenes as well as funny ones, and this is a little classic.
Loved this, I would have been 10/11 at that time and am from Lancashire, so nostalgic and real ,funny, sad and brilliant.

Victooria Wood has some great observations on mainstream life, her wit is priceless along with her acting friends.
