More DIS-concerting, actually, but yes, that as well. :-) D'you know, I looked at that extra 'o' for about two minutes before deciding to leave it there?!
Thank you for posting this up, I can't remember ever seeing it. I've not stopped laughing! From Susue Blake's continuity announcer's comments about the pared down BBC (Oh how true!!!) to "Asians, Wheelchairs, that's where the jobs are these days, every line in this has me crying with laughter! Listen and learn oh comedy people....
When they turned the antique shop into a sports centre is my absolute favourite. The legend has it that the rest of cast hadn’t seen Mrs O in her aerobics outfit prior to filming - you can see them trying to hold it together when she sashays in, pelvis first as always. TV gold
I have been watching, and rewatching, and rewat....,( well you get the idea) and have always loved it; Victoria Wood, Celia Imrie, Julie Walters, Duncan Preston - whats not to love? But I just watched a documentary about "Crossroads" and its star Noel Gordon, and, now that I have more context, I enjoy "Acorn Antiques" even more than before!
Lebanese, its the same letters and its still a shock ending...... hahaha.. And do the sponsors really want to see a Lesbian going up and down in a stair lift...... Too funny...!!!.
I was in a funk this morning until I came across this! I just adore Victoria Wood and her supreme wit. And all those other fantastic character actors, especially Julie Walters. It’s also interesting to see that the early 90’s was the dawn of the politically correct era and Victoria captured it beautifully. This is when western culture started to change from perhaps too insensitive to overly so. RIP Victoria, another wonderful human being gone too soon.
Thank you for uploading this... I've never seen it before. The good news about Victoria Wood returning with a Christmas sketch show this year is that Julie Walters will be alongside her... there'll be a spoof documentary about Bo Beaumont, the actress 'playing' Mrs. Overall. Can't wait for that!
more lines for me to learn - "hold on to your rainhoods"... Strange that the BBC haven't released a more thorough DVD set of VWs stuff. If one's on the way, fingers crossed for a Christmas 09 release. French and Saunders are similarly badly represented.
There was a similar joke in an episode of "golden girls".. One of Dorothy's collage friends visits, Fast forward toward the end, Dorothy's friend confides she's developed feelings for rose.. Later Sophia and Dorothy giggle-ishly discus the revelation, blanche, over hearing the commotion walks in and asks what they're talking about.. Dorothy tells blanche her friend is a lesbian to which she replies "so?," " I've never met any personally.. But isn't Danny Thomas one?" dorothy looks at her puzzled for a moment then quips "lesbian blanche !" "not Lebanese!".
Fantastic to see David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst in the audience at the end. I can't help but wonder if this was part of the sketch? Given Victoria's sensibilities, it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
This sketch was made in 1996 to celebrate 60 years of BBC Television, it was played into the studio audience in front of a star studded audience from so many BBC shows, which is why David and Nicholas were in the audience.
Now and again Victoria would laugh for real. Back in the original episodes I notice Duncan Prestion who played Clifford trying do hard not to laugh, even once covering his face with a handkerchief when Mrs Overall appeared.
The production values on "Acorn Antiques" are deliberately appallingly low. It's a parody of the worst of the worst soap operas (think "Crossroads") with their flubbed lines, missed cues, dreadful timing, wobbly sets, and indescribable acting.
@brightonking69 i agree. i sat through it waiting for it to get funny. i smiled a few times during her Lark Rise spoof but that awful Mrs.Overall special was a complete waste of time, I was so gutted.
Oh gawd. If anyone said any of this now there would be a Twitter outcry - as people who have nothing better to do have hysterics about something that’s got bugger all to do with them.
Her brilliant last stab at the BBC and TV in general. Thank goodness she satirised the ludicrous PC crap before she left us. "Asians...wheelchairs. That's where the jobs are now."
She isn't . She's satirising the far right mentality that promotes the view that Asians shouldn't be seen on TV or have programming made that acknowledges elements of Asian culture . The same with users of wheelchairs. In the early episodes it's clear she wrote the continuity announcer as someone with very conservative views such as "all these strikers should be grateful for having a job " during the miners' strike and "treating that all too familiar female ailment ....that's not a word I care to read out I don't think , fortunately it's not something I'm ever likely to get ...and if I did get it I certainly wouldn't put yoghurt on it " . Along with, at closedown, "our local radio station is still broadcasting , and there's still chance to catch some of that very popular nightly phone-in, so, if you want to tune in to listen to a bunch of ill-informed left-wing megalomaniacs, that's 373 VHF or 951 metres medium Wave , good night ."
Sadly in 2021 you won't get this shown on TV no matter who wrote it, how well it's written or performed as snowflake society would deem it too offensive to Asians, disabled, LGBTDFSMFI and Antique dealers! Sad really that society seems to no longer be able to have a laugh at itself.
@@tonycavanagh1929 I feel you've misinterpreted my comment. I'd love to see this and many other comedy sketches shown on screen, but sadly there are those who find even the slightest remark made about a "minority" offensive. It's sad that Victoria Wood was taken from us too early. I'd love to see what she would have done with Covid and lockdown!
@@nativenewlondoner "Asians, wheelchairs". How right you are in 2021, The BBC is filling up with ethnics, disabled, the physiognomically challenged, screaming gays, looney lefties, Jewish people, friends and family of the top employees and time wasters charading as entertainers. Tragic. In my youth, The Beeb was a gold standard, now, it's course, shallow and biased.
There was no canned laughter. This was shown in front of a live studio audience. This sketch was filmed for the 60th anniversary gala of BBC Television, shown in front of an audience of 500 people in Studio TC1 at BBC Television Centre.
When ever I need cheering up I watch my Acorn Antiques DVD. It’s so clever.
“Well im not an expert on knobs”.
“Not that I’ve heard” 😂😂😂
I was in Cumbria judging a Diana Rigg lookalike Competition
OMG! JULIE WALTERS is one of my very favorites. I don't know how I ended up here but, what a treasure to find. Thanks for posting.
Am I the only one that thinks that Acorn Antiques should be an ACTUAL series?
No
no
It was a real series. Crossroads.
Yes
It was..Crossroads, rushed home from school to watch it each evening

"i'm not and expert on knobs"...."that's not what i heard"
2:18 is the funniest line I have heard in ages. "One of the worst aspects of homelessness is you really haven't anywhere to put a chandelier"
+Glenn Smith That line made me spit out my Earl Grey.
Celia Imrie is wonderful, I love her autobiography The Happy Hoofer ❤️
Pure class. R.I.P Victoria
Georgian stereo unit. Gold!

I consider myself a huge Victoria Wood fan and I never even knew this existed Thank you so much for posting.
So, how 'huge' are you?
Perhaps not as 'huge' as i thought
Myself, I have been trying to loose weight. I have been more of a 'huge' fan of Victoria Wood than intended.
+effyleven
When you say, 'loose weight', do you mean it dangles or moves about in a random and concerting manner?
More DIS-concerting, actually, but yes, that as well. :-)

Thank you, you've done British comedy a great service by finding this episode. Good ol' Mum's video recorder!
That mini clap for Mrs O was hilarious!

Death is god’s way of saying slow down.
"Could you move, I'm trying to photograph the brickwork." I didn't see that coming!
5:03 - I loved the "oh snigger" line from Julie, we all know what Mrs Overall thought it was before she looked close up.
So sad to hear about Victoria. A genuine loss. :(

I'm a wheelchair user and that line plus the actors in wheelchairs had me crying with laughter!
I'm a wheelchair user too, and I wish there WERE more jobs for disabled people at the BBC. That's true diversity.

Is that Victoria Coren interviewing the cast?

SO ahead of her time Our Vic. Look at the disasterous comeback "Crossroads" tried to make in 2003, all sexed -up.

The bit where Michael Aspel comes out as a lesbian at the end is priceless.
Lol James I presume, with the same quote from facebook?
Cheers :o)
Good news is that the BBC have confirmed that there is a new VW special for Xmas 09...who knows, might be another reprisal of the old cast? :o)
So many years before WOKE our announcer got it right .
Are all the mistakes genuine mistakes or part of it? Its hard to tell.

hahahahahhaahaaa still tickles me.
Too much audience noise to hear everything they are saying.☹️
Downtown manchesterford phaha
Victoria Wood, like many geniuses gone too young 😣
