My parents rented a cabin for a week every summer in South Lake Tahoe in the late 70's& early 80's. The cabin was about 4 miles from the airport and in the direct line of approach/takeoffs. The C580's(Aspen Air) and Lockheed L-188's(Air California) would fly over regularly. Awesome sounds!
these were the Convair CV 240 family made from 1947-1954 originally powered by P&W R-2800-CA3 18 cylinder double wasp radial engines. either using Hamilton Standard or Curtiss 3 bladed props the 580 is the turboprop conversion using two Allison 501 turboprops and 4 bladed Hamilton Standard props. the CV-600 and 640 has the Rolls Royce Dart turboprops.
I was a mechanic for Air Resorts 1988-1991....43U was my favorite one. I was onboard mech for several charter tours on this plane...including Baryshnkov dance tour in 1990.
sounds like a real plane to me, not like today where they sound like air compressors or vaccum cleaners or a blender. this is a true work horse. i flew in one back in 1982 (republic airlines) it was the best flight i ever had on one of these.
Air Resorts.... Seem to remember they were based out of Palomar as well, I think Ted Valles owned it, Always working on getting the Navy contract to the island, Sure collected some interesting airframes
Has to be in the 90's sometime. I saw a minivan in there. You don't see cellphones either. lol. They looked like cordless phones back then and cost high $$$ for the bill too. My friends was 300 a month in 1993.
Unfortunately scraped back in 1996, I think. Shame. I got a little cockpit time on a ferry flight on a 580 from OAK to LAX back in 1989. Great old bird.
@@jamesthompson3099 ..thanks wish there would at least be mention i the description that's like a 17 year difference. Crikey, if it was still operating in 2013, it would be one hearty old bird. I may have even flown on it when it was still in North Central livery as I lived in MKE and travelled on them a lot..

This is just pure classic aviation all the way.
The Convair 580 is one great looking and sounding bird with those Allisons!
Beautiful engine sound.
Yes sir, that's my baby! The only CV-580 I've ever rode on, summer 1992. Love those muscular Allison 501's. Great sound. Thanks for posting!

Derek Obidowski
Those are the Aero Products props not Hamilton Standards.
Engine looks Similar to Electra
Great video-takes me back to my Mechanic days at NCA and REP.

Beefy nose gear!!
Nice climb rate
Allison engines! Great sound!
That's a nifty little stairway that comes out of the door :)
Did you see the old gueen air and the sea fury in the back ground?
Classic, handsome, rugged looking aircraft all around. I can smell that fuel now. :)
The wind down of those Allison jet props!
Dreadnought, Sea Fury in the background.
Very cool

I flew in a Republic Convair in 1985, it was excellent!
Nice video Ryan, I also enjoyed seeing the Sea Fury and Planes of Fame B-25 Photo Fanny on the tarmac. Good stuff as always.
Aircrane43 not photo fanny. Never had Indian heads on the tail.
Good video. I flew on these a couple of times when we flew on Republic to visit my grandparents.
Power! Power! 580 Power! I always thought Air Resorts had a pseudo Herman (North Central) logo.
Yesss. First thing I noticed
Fantastic airplane. Flew one for Frontier Airlines so long ago.
You can fly-la la-North Central Airlines-la la la❤❤
Dreadnaught Super Sea Fury parked there on the ramp- Any chance you have some footage of that departing?
Nice!
What is that old warbird behind the Convair @ 1:14? I saw what appears to be an U-21 or U-8 Seminole which i have to say is amazing
What year was this ? Also nice views of Hawker Sea Fury Argonaut? A B-25 and what appears to be a Lockheed 12
Air Resorts.... Seem to remember they were based out of Palomar as well, I think Ted Valles owned it, Always working on getting the Navy contract to the island, Sure collected some interesting airframes
Superb.
Was also my short have hop favorite
I see a B-25 and maybe a Lockheed 10A.
That's the old Martin Aviation terminal. I worked there for 4 years fueling planes.
This aircraft type ,580 always had the strangest sound, engine wise ,like a GIANT MOSQUITO 🦟
Got to fly on one in August 1988.
Which year was that?

The il fated Leonard Skynard plane. Same series.
....or maybe Summit?
inThe 80,s Aspen airways and Freedom airlines flew these birds.
Looks like an old Zantop bird.
..crikey yet another ex North Central 580 still in the air.
