When Con Air came out, I was working in a movie theatre. As a promotion, many theatres were given build plans and decals for a MASSIVE Jail-Bird jet to hang in their lobbies(built from wood and poster board, then spray painted). I got to build one of these(the wingspan was about 15-20 feet). As a thank you, the company sent all the theatre's employees that participated in a build a grey Con Air jacket and a thank you letter...

Minty, I have really been enjoying your channel. As an old Army Paratrooper I have seen ConAir many, many times. One aspect that makes this movie loved by the Army so much is that he is playing and ex Army Ranger from the 75th Ranger Regiment. When he tell Larkin that he can’t leave a fallen man behind, that is the corner stone of the Ranger Creed. So it’s an emotional and important part of the movie. Much like the Bunny 🤘🏻. Thank you so much for covering this movie.

Apparently Cage came and spent some time in the town I live in to help with the southern accent for the film. His brother in law (at the time) was dating Courteney Cox and suggested he go to Birmingham, but that was too big of place so he decided to stay in the Oxford/Anniston, Alabama area. I ended up working at the hotel several years later as one of the night auditors and the guy that trained me (his name was Jeff) had been there forever and he rarely talked to anyone and hated training anyone because that hotels audit were so difficult, people would quit usually after working there after a month or even less. So after I’d been there several months and it looked like I was going to hang around, he started to actually befriend me. He said I’m going to tell you something I have rarely told anyone else that works here because I didn’t tell a single person when it was happening (dude had zero friends, a significant other or anything, I think I was the first person he actually opened up to). He asked if I knew who Nicolas Cage was and had I seen Con Air and I was like DUH!! So he then proceeded to tell me about him staying at our hotel and he was staying under a different name and would only come out during the night, like 3rd shift. He would chat with Jeff for a bit, go get a drink at our hotel bar and then go and hang out at the Waffle House until right before sunrise. He disguised himself so no one would recognize him and just wanted to hang around and hear the locals chatting so he could try and pick up the accent. Jeff figured out it was him and finally asked him if it was him one night and he admitted it & asked him not to tell anyone and he never did till he told me. I thought he was bullshitting me until I heard several years later from a one of the Waffle House waitresses who had worked there forever. She said he told them who he was the last night he ever came in. He left her a huge tip and signed a napkin for her and she never saw him again. That hotel is no longer there, it was torn down several years back. It used to be THE hotel where anyone famous stayed before they started building all these fancy newer ones. Here in Oxford is where everyone stays for the NASCAR races in Talladega. Working in hotels made me despise NASCAR!! Like I never liked it anyways, but it made me hate it even more. I still dread it twice a year because the traffic is terrible and as a local you know not to go anywhere. The other hotel I worked had other celebrities and of course the pit crews too, but I’ll always remember working at that old Best Western and all the crazy stories.

The ballad, "How Do I Live?" May seem like it's out of place in an action film but it actually fit with Nick Cage's character. He was locked up for protecting his wife and was separated from his wife and daughter. The song reflects his sadness and loneliness being apart from them and it's an emotional climax and very cathartic when they are reunited at the end

I'm a metal fan but the song works for the movie because it's in part a love story. Cage's character is motivated by love the whole way through. He's also an honorable warrior and the film goes out of its way to showcase his chivalry. The medieval chivalric code emphasized earthly, courtly, romantic love as an important component of knighthood, and, when done properly, as way to get closer to heaven. It's an action film but it is deeper than you give it credit for.

I've lived in Vegas since 1995. In late 1996/early 1997, I saw the Con Air plane and a few Apache helicopters as well as a camera crew chopper flying around the skies of Vegas filming the climactic ending at sunset. When the film came out, the local news was showing how messed up the Strip would look if the plane crashed into the buildings it did. The most iconic part of the crash was taking off the guitar from Hard Rock, but Hard Rock is no where near the Strip.

It wasn't that LeeAnn was 14 and the movie being rated R, that her version of "How do I Live Without You" wasn't used, it was because it was thought the song would have more emotional impact being sung by an older woman, who had experienced more of life's ups and downs.

    • @ninelives4738

    • @scottstark5528

Yeah and I remember Leann Rimes being "salty" about it as well. She would make a point of mentioning in interviews that her version outperformed Trisha Yearwoods on the Billboard charts as they both released within months of each other.

Great video, Minty. Hey, I've always LOVED "how do I live without you", it's such a beautiful romantic ballad, & songs like that just aren't made anymore. In the 90s, you still had amazing romantic ballads, & you still had memorable songs from movie soundtracks, that would add to the film, & make it that much more memorable! That sadly, is a thing of the past, too. Wow, I had no idea that Trisha Yearwood had rerecorded "how do I live without you". I always thought only Leann Rimes had done this song! Trisha did a decent job, but I do prefer Leann's version.

Being a local and native of Las Vegas, the end chase is hilarious since 1 second they are on the strip, they make a left turn then they are on Fremont and back and forth they went. For those not versed on Vegas geography, the main part of freemont st is like 3-5 miles away from the places they shot on the steip.
Oh yea, the crash landing has them landing on the strip while taking put the guitar at the hard rock which is impossible since the hard rock is easily a mile of more east of the strip.
