I would rather die than return to 80's conditions. VHS tapes, the same ones over and over, cassette walkman players that warped with the ship's inconsistent power supply, no fresh coffee pods, telegrams, money orders, long distance phone calls in African phone booths, magnetic board games note: our only video game setup was playing on the hacked employer's computer. Tale as old as time : Do not forget your Woolley pulley!
Good Music, wondering if i should bring that much stuff to the Piney point maryland for the school and training , is that how much you bring for the training at the Union School
@@northwestsailor526 Thanks bro and also for the suggestion of the Merchant manual, i feel like after reading the book, i am getting better prepared for the training, boost self confidence and eliminate some anxiety of what to expect there. Also your other videos on guides and tips, I am glade I found your RUclips Channel
Most all ships will provide bars of soap. Some ships have stores to buy shampoo and other toiletries plus snacks. But I’ve been on a ship with no store at all. I had to bring everything I needed for 4 months.
@@northwestsailor526 how long are the contracts usually if you don’t mind me asking? Can I got out for 3 months and have a month off and repeat said cycle?
@@sarahsilverleaf6302 Check out some of my other videos. This has been answered in various ways. Typically a 3 month tour isn’t common. There’s standby type jobs that last 3 days to a week. 30 day tours. 60 day. Or 4 month. The most common thing to do is either 60 day tours or 120 tours.
Next year i plan on submitting my application for SIU, wish me luck. Do you communicate through email? I'd like to get any advice from you about this opportunity
Would you recommend buying this gear and the the top 10 things to travel with for work 2021 before SIU program or after? Bc i know you said you are on a ship 2x for 3 months each in the program. Do you recommend this gear before SIU program or after before you get on your first ship out of the SIU program?
It depends on your own personal needs, but yes. I realize I didn’t add a lot of links in that video but look around yourself or in the descriptions of my other videos. Definitely a hard drive for movies, start collecting your library now. I got my first terabyte of movies in phase 1 from other apprentices. Coffee press if you like your own style of coffee. Definitely a watch that doesn’t break the budget. Your own towel and pillow cover. Not everything in the top 10 will be needed for the program. Knives are confiscated until you leave for a ship, just so you know. We all have different needs, think about what’s best for you.
@@northwestsailor526 I will definitely bring a hard drive then, watch, towel, pillow case, I was really wondering about the boots, Wells coverall, wool socks, duffel bag, grundens water proof pants, etc. I wrote a list of everything you mentioned in your 3 videos about gear and your bag, I plan on getting everything but I'm just wondering if I should wait until after the program
@@MowgliJaguarKing All of it sooner or later %100. Rain pants yes. Coveralls you could wait mattering on when you’ll be going into the program. But you never know where you’ll end up shipping. Could be a Hawaiian cruise could be Alaska? You won’t know till you get there. Boots in the program need to be black no exceptions. If they aren’t they’ll make you spray paint them or heavily apply black polish. The bag will be helpful but don’t break the budget trying to get all this stuff at once.
@@northwestsailor526 rain pants noted, my MMC should be coming in the mail this week and then I'll be put on the waiting list! Hopefully that list isn't too long, I'm very anxious. I'm hoping it's not the Hawaiin cruise due to what you said about not getting a true deck experience on the cruise ship. Noted, I just picked up some work boots at the thrift store and they aren't black. Noted, on the duffle I still have a massive backpack that could probably get me through the SIU program!
Great job I guess in the last video you didn’t have you shit & brain in sync. 😁 I can see where a little shore leave your first stop or nite return ya would have a shopping list of things to pick up. Bravo Zulu on this one. My next question is how much time ya spent at SIU on math conversion for metric to US weight and measurements. 👍👍👀
Check bag weight limit is 50 pounds. A lot of international flights will even allow you ✌️ 50 pounds checked bags. I usually have another small half sized duffel for heavy things. That bag packed in the video weighed 65 pounds but I won’t be flying for my next trip so I didn’t split the weight difference.

Do the guys that work in the engine room also need to pack that much cold weather gear?
Cool , i definitely might consider buying that duffle bag, lots of room I like it

Hellzz no. Piney point gives you most all the clothing you need. Just bring toiletries!

Nice video dude!! how much weight can you take with you on the ship?? Regards from México!
As much as you can carry and if your flying, as much as your willing to pay for in excess bag weight 😂
Whiner gloves genius
Do they not have a store on ship where u can buy stuff or do you have to plan for the whole trip

all that fits in a 40lb weight limit for check in bag?
