      That's awesome. 🙂 Yes, as Ron said, vocal coherency and realism are generally one of the standout attributes of a properly implemented concentric driver design...all of the vocal range emanating from a single point instead of being divided between two separate/different origins on the baffle.
      I use my own 3-way DIY concentric studio monitor design in my home studio for this very reason. I'm using the BMS 5CN162HE 5" midrange/1" HF compression concentric drivers paired with 10" Ciare HW251N midbass/bass drivers in my design.
      The concentric driver design improves the overall coherency and the use of the HF compression driver results in stunning dynamic transients that few speakers can match. The Ciare are also quite dynamically capable and provide for incredibly realistic drums (I'm a drummer & saxophonist). These replaced my previous ATC SCM25A active studio monitors for about 1/3 the cost. The spectral balance and clarity was similar with the ATCs, but the coherency, imaging/soundstage, and dynamics are on a different level with the DIY design. :)

    Sound clips in this are phenomenal, even though a pair of speakers I did notice a little loss in clarity/presence in the speaker recordings, especially with some of the backing instruments, as though they were a little veiled compared to the reference recording, but overall, a really well-balanced speaker.
    I also really appreciate the in-room measurements from different speaker locations, as it really illustrates how even in a well-treated room, the differences distances can create.
    Keep up the great work, Ron!

    Let me add my experience about big paper cones with fabric suspensions. My DIY 3way speakers got a Ciare 8" PM200N as a mid speaker. It's a paper cone with pressed paper and fabric texture suspension. All the magic come from this mid. It's super fast, transparent and clear, gives realism to voices and instruments. Tweeter is just some inches above but still, everything sounds natural and beauty. Imho the magic comes from the big mid speaker. Coaxial gives for sure some plus but it's not the reason of this success. I would say that the great ATC midrange domes have similarities in sound characteristics with this kind of speakers.. Cheers

    I was ready to dismiss any rave review on the Pount 10 as I had heard them in person as Andrew, himself, did the presentation back in early 2022, and again at a dealer. To me, the bass could sound boomy, depending on the track. After, listening and watching Ron's set up, I now realize that the set up of the speakers were too close to the rear wall, on the two rooms I had my listening sessions. Dah! As with most rear ported speakers, they need room to breath. Thanks Ron for reminding me that the room and the setup of the speakers can make or destroy our sonic perceptions of said speakers.

      This is probably where just using a single band of Parametric EQ with a Q of between 1-5 could help optimize the in-room bass response due to your room's boundaries and the speaker placement in relation to them. A boomy or bloated/exaggerated bass response also has the effect of masking midrange and treble detail and clarity and the imaging/soundstage.

      If a bit of off-axis toe-out or acoustic absorbtion panels at the first side-wall reflection points don't remedy this, using just a single basic band of Parametric EQ with the proper Q or a Shelf Filter would completely fix this and shape the response even more to your personal preference.
      The audio recording, mixing, and mastering engineers that actually produce the music you listen to use multiple instances of these types of EQ filters all day/every day in order to "shape" the response of the final recording. But for some reason audiophiles consider using any type of EQ in their playback systems as voodoo and detrimental.
      A similar band of Parametric EQ could help optimize the in-room bass response due to your room's specific boundaries and the speaker placement in relation to them. A boomy or bloated/exaggerated bass response also has the effect of masking midrange and treble detail and clarity as well as the imaging/soundstage, and not enough midbass or bass obviously leads to an unexciting listening experience.

    WOW! Well I never got around to reading or hearing any other reviews of these speakers yet, though I do recall watching John Darko interview Andrew Jones about the development of these speakers - I think that was either just before or as they were being released (but don’t recall seeing any images or hearing them - so maybe right first time). Anywho, it perked my interest as always been a HUGE fan of the dual concentric type design since I bought a pair of Tannoy Sixes 611’s back in the early 1990’s. Oh boy, I can still remember the jaw dropping moment I first heard them (and still have the same pair to this day). But these are taking the principle yet further still with a single driver covering the bass as well - kinda a triple or 3-way concentric driver!
    Now I read a few comments suggesting they thought they heard them slightly veil the sound, but the principle reason for commenting was how AMAZED I was by the sound demo/comparison section - Loved the first test track BTW (who was it?) - as even just listening on some modestly priced but decent IEM’s via my Chord Mojo I actually PREFERRED the sound of the speakers to the original recording !????! It was almost as if the upper mids and top end had MORE clarity, sparkle and air - really sounded great - but it was hands down the best sounding in room mic recording I’ve yet to hear on RUclips 🙌 🙌 🙌 So can only imagine how fab these sound in real life. I don’t even need any new speakers, but am now seriously tempted to find a reason to buy them 😉

      So was I...... I was at KEF when the Uni-Q was first designed. I have been designing concentric drivers ever since, close to 40 years now. KEF released concentric drivers before SEAS. And Tannoy, although concentric, uses a compression driver mounted behind the woofer magnet, rather than a regular tweeter mounted at the apex of the cone. Not the same concept.

    0:30 I did it to a pair of 8" bass med drivers and 10" bass med drivers. I also highly modify wide band single drivers for better voice sound and more highs, by slitting the cone right near the center for easier cone vibrations in the highs. And cutouts near the outside of the cone to make the cone act like a free edge cone. I ran the single drivers open on top of the box and a woofer in the box (best sounding speakers I made). I might use my 10" coaxials on high power handling speakers, or open baffle on the woofer with the open coaxial outright. And also a boxed woofer facing straight down onto the floor (like my FR + woofer lounge speakers woofer mounting). 😅 My friend has a set of speakers I built with 8" coaxials + woofer (firing onto the floor). But now (cos of the mod) the modified single drivers are at least as good as the coaxials, more cohesion in the meds to the highs!. And still enough power handling for lounge speakers.

      When you record speakers in a room, the treble rolls off on the reflected treble from the walls. That treble will roll off, combined with the direct treble, still results in a roll off right up top. But this is really minimal with your recordings. On the chart, the Source Point speaker treble looks like it peakes at 20 khz (excellent for compensating the reflected treble). And why the roll off is so minimal. In fact you might even get a gain in top treble if you did the same comparisons outside (when it's really quiet). 😅

    Ron, I had a helluva lotta fun with your building of the acoustic treatment of the sound shed series- out of curiosity, are the Earthwork mics in a dummy head configuration? After falling in love with what I heard from the OBs - something I’m sure I share with a lot of your regulars - I’m relieved to hear there’s hope for us folks with a history of rooms constraining us to monkey coffins. 🤭
    Would be interesting to get your take on the Triple8s.
    Cheers.

      I'm obviously not Ron, but I use the nearly identical Earthworks QTC30 mics in my home studio, and I'm fairly certain that Ron is using his QTC40 mics as a stereo "spaced pair" with each mic placed on-axis at the reference axis height of the speakers and somewhere between 12"-36" out in front of each speaker. So basically, one mic is positioned at ear level and on-axis directly in front of each speaker.
      The microphones distance from the front baffle of the speakers controls the ratio or mixture of the direct sound (speaker sound only) vs the room's reflections or "echo/reverb". The closer the microphones are placed to the front baffle of the speakers, the less room interaction they will pick up. It's analogous to listening to speakers in the near-field as opposed to mid- or far-field, the latter of which is more typical in our HiFi listening rooms.
      Binaural Head recordings work extremely well for actual live single point musical instrument or vocal sources combined with listening to these recordings using headphones or IEMs/earbuds, but binaural head microphones are not quite ideal when trying to accurately capture the sound of a separate pair of loudspeakers which are reproducing that sound via 2 separate sources in a stereo field.
      IOW, when we hear a live instrument or vocal with our own ears in real life, we are hearing those sounds emanate from a single point in space, whereas binaural head microphones that are recording a PAIR of Stereo Speakers are trying to replicate that experience but are having to record the facsimile of a single point source that is psychoacoustically created from two separate speakers with some distance between them.

    The compromise with the coaxial is lack of excursion because he didn't want it to interfere with the tweeter and cause diffraction so the x max is limited and so isn't the lower frequencies, that's why he used a 10 woofer. To make up for the excursion. My speakers that I made for myself are a 2 way with a 10" paper kevlar fiberglass cone woofer but the trade off is I don't have a coaxial but I get excursion and lower bass frequency. But I kept the tweeter as close as possible . But I love a 10" woofer if you can pull it off in a 2 way even better

    • @bbfoto7248
      @bbfoto7248 6 месяцев назад

      The issue with using a 10" midwoofer to reproduce both the midrange and midbass/bass is that the directivity will suffer due to beaming of the 10" diameter driver, and as you stated, the center-to-center spacing between the tweeter and midwoofer is greater which causes vertical lobing effects.
      You would need to use a "tweeter" that has a very low Fs and low crossover center frequency capability so as to avoid crossing over the 10" midwoofer at a point where beaming is evident.
      This is why most pro audio or other larger speakers that use 10" or larger midwoofers typically use a horn-loaded HF driver which helps to extend the crossover between the HF and midwoofer driver to a much lower crossover point.
      Any type of speaker configuration and combination of drivers and driver sizes is an exercise of compromises and trade-offs, and a "balancing act". I think that Andrew did very well with this design in order to minimize those compromises.
      FYI, I use a 5"/1" concentric midrange/HF drive unit in my own DIY 3-way studio monitor design with the BMS 5CN162HE + 10" Ciare HW251N midbass/bass drivers. The advantage of the BMS concentric driver is that it uses a high-efficiency compression driver for the tweeter which provides for incredible dynamics that typical dome tweeters simply aren't capable of.

    • @BostonMike68
      @BostonMike68 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@bbfoto7248 I'm just repeating what Andrew himself said about his speaker design. I watched him in a interview about it. I designed a successful 2 way with a 10" woofer. I used a tweeter with a rf of 620 and I used a 18 db slope third order crossover. Which you can crossover around 1400 before you have serious beaming issues. I took a long time trying to find the right woofer and I used one that can be used a decaded mid and can be used up to 7000 without breaking up of course you you will have beaming. Which has nothing to do with lobbing. I have ran distortion and took on and off axis measurements and everything is beautiful for what I wanted in my listening room I'm happy with it. Could I do better if course. But I get really good bass and dynamics. I have heard a lot of three ways that just didn't crossover to the mid and woofer right. It just didn't blend in to my ears. I would like to try what you described with a professional driver and compression drivers. But I pulled off the 2 way with a 10" and it sounds awesome. Like I said I heard Andrew describe the compromises he faced with that challenge, I didn't just know all that information out of my head. He's a rockstar of speaker design.

I did a lot of homework and testing over and over different versions of crossovers that I originally simulated then got the clips and ran sweeps. sometimes ports also conflicts with the subwoofer integration, plugging them can help but then you have a hybrid box with none of the benefits and all the drawbacks.

      It is fixed. You can't make it move with the woofer cone because the mass of the tweeter is far too high. You would severely reduce the efficiency of the woofer. Also, I use the magnets in such a way that both woofer and tweeter magnets combined their flux to improve the field in both the woofer and the tweeter magnet gaps. This couldn't happen if the tweeter were moving.

In a treated room, it should be just fine, in a bare room with reflections all over, the PIR as seen Erin's measurements should be more telling.
