I love this era of Simple Minds. I do not begrudge their success, but the loss of Derek Forbes and later Mick McNeill had a significant impact on the band.

Absolutely agree.. Their Bass and keyboards were the foundation of the wonderful early stuff and that creativity went out the door when they left...

Yes! Derek Forbes knew how to fill and add something unique to the big SM soundscape. The material after their departure is always missing "something". It takes special musicians to write and perform in that manner. Andy Summers comes to mind.

Derek and Mick defined the sound of the band. All the songs originated from one of those two.

Yeah, true sadly. It was 85 before I was old enough to go & see them on the Once upon a time tour at NEC, I did enjoy it but the magic was gone & within weeks after that I’d moved on from SM for good. Empires & Dance, Sons & Fascination, Sister Feelings Call & New Gold Dream are all still all-time faves for me. I’d have loved to have seen them 81/82. I saw U2 at Elland road in 87 & that was the last time I ever went to a Stadium gig or bought a U2 album, shite, it’s not my thing at all (although the Fall & Pretenders were great).

Bands were so good back then they had to be able to play they didn't have all the auto-tune and pro tools and digital this and digital that you had to be able to play and that was the bottom line that's why all these bands have strong songs that stood the test of time and that are still strong today and the bands of today are complete garbage because everything they do is fake for the most part, how many fans since like 2000 have put out songs that are still iconic like this?!!! I can't think of any to be honest. Was sad though when Derrick Forbes (bass player) left he was an intrigle part of their sound and one of the main co writers, I think the keyboard player left not long after he did.
