Photographing Orion(ids) and the Winter Night Sky

- In this new Nightscape Astrophotography Adventure I go out into the Dutch desert to capture the Star Constellation Orion, the Orionid Meteor Shower and the Winter Constellations. As usual the weather forecast is debatable: scattered clouds with a good chance of ground fog. We take a gamble and hope these will only add to the atmosphere of our final result.
Spoiler: Martijn won a third place in the Alyn Wallace November WITNS competition with his shot!

Easy, relaxed night, what more can you ask for :D man, I cant wait to go out. New camera looks great for vlogging. And congrats to Martijn for #witns :D.
Thx Matej! To me these more relaxed nights, where there is less pressure to churn out multiple shots, are certainly the best indeed! And yeah, a well deserved witns winner from Martijn! 💪
I really like the videos from the a7s! The dubble cluster never gets boring!
For me it's been quite a while since I made some decent nightscape images. Hopefully I can photograph a nice snowy scene with Orion in "t Brabantsch landschap" this winter. 🤞
Thank you Rene! It is fun and bizarre filming those objects live haha. I hope you can also shoot some nightscapes again soon and that the phrase "want daar brandt nog licht" wasn't meant too literally 😉
Nice to see Orion back again on the nightsky. Can`t wait to do some new Eifel stuff. Martijn was also mentioned by Alyn, so i think i was worth stay outside on a sunday.
It is! Great constellation. And yeah, awesome Martijn won a witns! 😀👌
Let us hear your plans with the winter skies!
Awesome guys. You had lovely skies in this video.
Thanks Richard! Skies were far better than expected that night 👌
Thanks for sharing Jeroen...!:) I want to point out that I really like the music in this one...!
Appreciate your comment Benjamin! I thought the but quieter music suited the atmosphere of that night a bit better 👍. No rushing and running around, just a chill night out under the stars in good company.
Again amazing photos of you both👏
Appreciate your comment Markus!
Great video as Always! So inspiring!
Thanks so much for letting me know! 👌
Awesome, Jeroen! Love the pictures - the first was a stonking meteor! So excited that Orion is back with us.
Also fantastic to see you enjoying the A7S. The thing is a beast! I’ve not slowed mine down to 1/8th yet, instead keeping the full 25fps, but you clearly get a nice clean image with it. 👌
Thank you Paul! It was a really nice night out again and we are both super happy with our final result.
Also a good opportunity to experiment with the A7S. I'd like to do some more tweaking next time + I now have an 20mm f1.8 lens to go with it in stead of my sigma 14-24 f2.8 and 50mm 1.8 which I've used here. The 1/8 shutter speed for some 50mm shots was a little test to see how that would look. It's ok for tripod shots where there is no movement but I'll keep it mainly at 25fps in the future. Good fun in any way! I do hate the amp glow though but I knew that would be there before buying ;-).
It was great to see a variety of focal lengths used. A great investment.
I just crop out the amp glow. It’s a bit of a pain but not the end of the world!
@@nightscapejournals I agree with you! Already made a preset of an acceptable 'amp glow crop'. Still visible in some shots but as you said, not the end of the world and the amount of extra detail it shows in the video is worth it I think.
My name is Chris playle from Wales in United Kingdom, once again a brilliant video, im hoping to image the orion complex sometime, but it's been clouded out for 3 weeks, going to my favourite dark skies site at bortle 2 skies in gower in Wales. Clear skies 📸🔭
Hi Chris. Hoping you get that clear skies soon! We also have to watch the weather very closely in case a small gap seems to arrive. Clouds most of the time though here also haha.
Good work and I have been there shooting late n working next morning .. didn’t tell the boss 😂
Haha, this sneaky late night hobby of ours 😁
Great vid
Thank you!
Great seeing the results you get from the Sony a7s - very impressive.
Thanks! It really is still quite remarkable for such an old camera.
Wow! So jealous. My last night under the stars (also with a Sony A7s) was on September 15th. Did not think of shooting a video about it ;-) Still got lots to learn.
Looking forward to that next video :-).
It wasn’t a strong shower here in the states, I got 6 meteors in 2.5 hours. As always I enjoyed joining you in the night. Tim
Thank you Tim! It was not that strong here also but we didn't mind. Had a great night anyway!
Welcome to the Sony Crew 😂 brilliant footage!
Haha, thanks Andrew! Bought a bunch of batteries, keeping them close to me for body heat as per your advice 😁👌.
@@StarScaperPhoto brilliant, yeah just keep everything warm and you’ll be good! Now u just need to video the Aurora live on video 😍
@@scotlandsnightsky yes! I really want to! I have some ideas cooking. Who knows, who knows 😇.
Great Rift on the Wadden Sea! You should join me sometime! 😊
Sounds like a plan! Would love to join one day. If only the skies would clear up more often here man... 😅
Wow!! The footage looked so clean!! For how long are you using the a7s? Loved that moon through the fog at the beginning! Well done you both! Take me along sometime. 😂
Thanks Jan! Started using the A7S for some test footage in the dwarf review video. In this video a bit more. I am just back from a night where I tried to film a vlog with only the A7S and a new f1.8 lens. Failed miserably because we mostly saw clouds for 2,5 hours 😄
just wondering how many images should i take when imaging the orion complex i b using a 1300d dlsr unmodified canon camera and a 50mm cannon prime lens at f1. 4 and a star adventurer 2i Pro tracking mount. Again brilliant video 📸
Normally I'd take 7-15 exposures which I would stack for noise reduction. Without a modified camera it would be tricky to get h-alpha detail visible though. The Orion nebula will still be great without a modified camera though!
That is a very clean foreground for a 20s exposure at ISO 6400. I love the current time. Also, may I ask how you do location scouting for like the Netherlands 🇳🇱 or any other place? Thanks Jeroen great content as always!
Thanks Koen! The new noise reduction in Lightroom also works wonders. Scouting is a combination of lightpollutionmap, google maps, if I can scouting it in daylight but often just hoping to get lucky also. Also check this vlog where I explain my whole planning process: ruclips.net/video/rMFkWvT3y1s/видео.htmlsi=BWqbVbgtPyQzIIXF
Thanks will check it out Jeroen!@@StarScaperPhoto
As always a great inspiring video. Thank you. Can I as what was causing the flashing in the sky at about 4 mins 30 in the mid lower right of the frame?
Thanks Andy! The flashing was an airplane.
@@StarScaperPhoto Thanks.
Thanks. It didn't seem to be moving relative to you. So coming straight at you?
Great video and amazing shots of the winter night sky. One question: How do you shot the night sky for example at 0:45 min? Every-time I use my DLR camera at night and want to film myself as you did I get noise. What's your setting you film with? Thank you! cs
Thank you! That's the magic of a Sony A7S series which performs acceptable at ISO 100.0000. After that I also push it a bit in post processing and do a run of Neat noise reduction. So yeah, lots of work but worth it in the end I hope ;-).
@@StarScaperPhoto Definitely worth it! :) Seems to be an amazing camera. Thanks very much Jeroen
@@tullyfisher it makes quite the difference compared to my Fuji X-T2 indeed.
@@StarScaperPhoto Ok. I have to admit: I'm not really familiar with those cameras. But the A7S footage really looks beautiful. I just checked the A7S but I guess it's out of my financial range.. 🙈😅
@@tullyfisher I had the opportunity to buy mine second hand a couple of weeks ago for only 250 euro's. Bargains are possible apparantly 😇
