@@AdeptKing to be fair, Athens existed. No seriously think about it, who was the Ares the Patron god of? Sparta. Who were the people Athens historically were at odds with? Sparta.
In short Athens was better at spreading and recording their versions of the story, so most of the surviving versions we get show Ares in a negative light, usually so someone like Athena can come along and do it better. You see this with other Gods. For example in the Trojan war you had Artemis at one point get into a fight with Hera, something really stupid that ended poorly for her, then you have Apollo come along, and he decides not to go fight a significantly stronger god and instead look for other ways to get what he wants done. One God makes a mistake, the other (who the story teller might be trying to show off as being better) doesn’t, or succeeds where the other fails. Also in that war you had moment when Aphrodite stepped onto the battle field, but then was chastised for this and told she had no place there. In short, it’s a story that tries to counter the idea Aphrodite has any connections to war, even in spite of the fact part of her deal should theoretically be a desire to protect one’s loved ones, for example a mother protecting her child (something she actual does in the story with Aeneas.)
