I saw Superdad in a theater in 1974 when I was in the 7th grade. I hardly remembered the film later on, except for the wedding scene. It was available to rent on RUclips, so I thought I'd watch it again. For the record, Superdad was a box office failure and got bad reviews. The film was flawed, corny, and it really isn't funny at all; but I liked it. It had a good cast, and a few scenes in the movie are quite moving. What makes the film stand out is the song These Are The Best Times. The opening version was recorded by Bobby Goldsboro, plus an instrumental of it played throughout most of the film. The rendition by the boys choir was beautiful; lovely song with a lot of meaning. I have since found out that several people had it sung at their weddings, due to this movie. In closing, Superdad, while far from being a Disney classic, was worth watching; it made me smile.
Saw this as a generally dopey 10 year old boy, and remember being surprisingly profoundly moved by the wedding scene, this song and the choir -- especially how ethereal the harmonies were and the timelessness of the sentiment. Not one at all, then or now, to care much about weddings, ceremonies or anything like this, but I promised myself my wedding would be like this. It was not, was nice enough, but nothing like this. It wasn't until after I was married, well into my 40s, that I suddenly recalled the memory of the movie (couldn't recall the movie's name), that Bob Crane was in it -- but mostly that there was a really beautiful song and wedding scene. With a bit of google/research triangulation I found it! It's as hauntingly beautiful as ever, and more touching that I've loved, lived life, and understand the depths of the sentiments better, or strive to.
Odd - I was the same age and had the exact same reaction. All so sad. Disney died literally and symbolically, poor Bob Crane died a bad death and, we watch now the death of our great country. I wish I could go back to the magical time and have this experience again...
Bruno Kirby, who plays the goofy character Stanley, and apparently is the Best Man in this scene, would get his big break a year after this film portraying the young Clemenza in the flashback scenes of Godfather Part 2. And of course not to mention Kurt Russell's stellar career! God rest your soul, Bruno!
I wouldn’t change one thing about our wedding-it was beautiful and perfect in every way. I knew it then and I know it now. But part of me still feels like the 10 year old who saw this movie and fell in love with this song and vowed to have it in my wedding! ❤
On the Bobby Goldsboro version, I swear it sounds like the Beach Boys and Karen Carpenter singing backup! Saw this at the Cross Keys movie theater in Florissant MO in 6th grade. Always remembered the kids singing it at the end. Even as a 12 year old I knew that the key changes made it a beautiful song. Hadn't thought about in years. Was yakking with the wife this Christmas about the Kurt Russell Santa movie and mentioned Kurt Russell being in some old Disney movie with Bob Crane that was funny called Superdad. Only scene I could really remember was the walk down the aisle with the kids singing the the pretty song and with a few google clicks, she said, "Is this it? and poof, it was 6th grade again. Love both versions. Please, someone smarter than me put this somewhere I can download it.
I'd just listened to Growing Pains TV series theme song, (for season 6 in acapella), when I remembered this song from Superdad. I wasn't sure of the title, but remembered that Kurt Russell & Robin Williams did a movie together in the 1980s that was titled something like "The Best of Times" & when I saw it I remembered, then, that this movie's title was reminiscent of the theme song in the Superdad wedding, (& also Bobby Goldsboro's haunting rendition). I had a VHS of SuperDad back in the day & purchased it just for the church song, (although Kurt Russell has always been very talented eye candy). Thank you so much for posting this part of the movie & that beautiful song!!!
Bob Crane was looking at that old woman and thinking how her breasts were probably sagging down to her knees. And when he tells his daughter in the movie "I smell"... I imagine it was like rotten tilapia. Ahh, the wonderful world of Disney!
A VERY under-rated Disney Movie! Love it!

The hats, the long hair, the typical 1970's California wedding! Sure takes me back!!
I had this song in my wedding back in 1984

Glad you enjoyed the memory, Bobby Goldsboro did the studio version but it was never released except on the Soundtrack album.
I remembered it the same way!
Me too!

My mom hired a children's choir for our wedding, and they led the processional in. It was honestly exquisite!

God rest your soul, Bruno!
I also loved him in City Slickers
I also liked Bruno Kirby as the polka- loving lieutenant in Good Morning Vietnam.
Bruno was great in Almost Summer in 1978

So she got to marry Kurt Russell when his live-in love Goldie Hawn never did.
Trivia: Walt Disney's last words were "Kurt Russell." Look it up.
Ironic Kurt had a movie , The Best of Times.”
