- For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ I'm nearly a decade behind. Unless you've been absent for about 10 years from the guitar world, you most likely will be way ahead of me on this and have probably tried a Strymon Timeline already. For some reason, yesterday was my very first day ever playing one....Of course this is a delay pedal that almost everyone knows about, but in this video I'll talk about why I'm using one with my Line 6 HX Stomp.
I've decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together for £5 - www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr... - I will then email you a link to both bundles!
You can get my EXPRESSION patches in this bundle using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...
Try my patches (60-70+) for Helix or HX Stomp in this bundle for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...
Try my patches for Pod GO for £3 using this link - I will then send out the patches! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...

4:30 DSP constraints and making the case for external pedals

That might be the greatest intro to a guitar demo ever.
Can I quote you on that?
@@johnnathancordy he said 'yes'
Came for the demo, stayed for the poetry…
Tune in next week when Johnathan realizes that a Sunset/Iridium/BigSky/Timeline setup is the bomb and outs himself as a Strymon fan. ;)
I love how there’s no harsh pick attack noise in your playing - it really makes for clear melodic playing
Strymon products are next level. I'm still amazed, every time I step on my Big Sky (and I've had Lexicon racks in the past). I'm not saying it's the same thing, but they pack incredible power in a stompbox. Strymon makes inspiration machines. Enjoyed your playing = Tasty.
JNC funniest intro, cheers for vids in 2020, happy new year onward and upward 2021
Great tones and playing, Johnnathan! 👍 Really inspiring! 🎸🐝
You’re a terrific guitar player. Great sounds, great feel.
Same. I just ordered one on Reverb today. Stoked!
You're not just a guitarist, you're a hell of a musician. Wonderful video and maaaaan these jams are crazy good !!! Totally understand the use of such a delay pedal with the HX Stomp (as well as drive pedals in front) to "ease" the DSP in there, that's what makes it so versatile I guess ? Sounds so great on its own and there's definitely enough DSP power to dial some great great tones, but in case you need to ease the DSP the unit is so small and well thought you can easily pair other pedals with it, now I can comprehend all that ahaha ! Crazy Doc
Stunning tones thanks for your reply
I really like the format of this video, John! Play, talk, play, talk, play...
The metaphors bit in the beginning = gold!
Excellent playing and tone!
🤘💀🤘
Just bought mine....why did I wait sooooooo long to get one?! 🤯🤯🤯
Astounding as always mate, I got my stomp based on your review now I need some skills 🤔
Great playing!
Some pedals are over hyped and some genuinely live up to it - the Timeline is definitely the latter. It’s a total game-changer pedal. Even legends like Michael Landau use it! I’ve had it on board since it came out about 10 years ago, I’ve even tried to boot it off with some more recent releases, and none can (for me at least). It is awesome.
And Andy Timmons?
You are not alone. I was in the same boat. Purchased mine used a few weeks ago. No regrets . .A classic swiss army knife digital delay. The person who owned it before never updated the firmware. I suggest updating if you have not already. Great inspiring playing as usual from you
I see others have mentioned it already but really beautiful playing on this one.
I was just shopping for a newish DL4. Good pedals are good pedals. It doesn't matter when they were made.
Yeh I feel like both the DL4 and the Timeline are kinda modern classics?
Just amazing sounds
I can relate to those metaphors in all of the quality ways that you'd expect
Great vid! God Bless
Awesome player 🎸🎸🎸👌
The Strymon Timeline is a staple on many pedalboards. Like you I don't have one. However I do have a Mobius and the El Capistan that I still use in conjunction with my HX Stomp. With all the great delays and reverb pedals out there, many players still hang on to their Strymon Timelines and Big Sky.
Thumbs up for the metaphor!
Great playing as always. Regardless of its age and the fact that Strymon hates updating firmware, it's still got a great-sounding stereo dual delay. Some of the others are good, too, but the thick effect-y ones sound a little treble-heavy and noticeably "that's a Timeline" sometimes, even when it's not in fact a TimeLine at all.
the guitar demos in this video is a GEM
Can I request a 'how you record' type video? Would love to see your workflow, gear you use and your approach to the whole thing. Monster playing/tone on this, by the way!!!

here you go!
Those chords are amazing
Once again 🙏!
Yes it sounds really good. I think you already talked yourself into it. I have a carbon copy and like the delays in my m9. I always wanted an el Capistan.
I have and had most strymon delays. Timeline is great. Volante is great in stereo but for me the Dig is king
Dig looks dreamy and would probably be the perfect compliment to the El Cap
You have a way with words man
Timeline + Flint for the win!!
This sounds unreal, don’t know if you have listened to the midnight, but check out the solo in comeback kid. This tone captures that to a tee
100% yes!
You're a great player mate; you have great command over scales and extended lines. Where did you study?
Great playing and what a tone!!! What kind of amp/effects/patch so you use on hx stomp?
Love you channel and some pretty awesome sounds,, with the cost of the timeline have you not considered a Lt instead is it size? I love mine to be honest, thanks for the great videos
I have a helix floor!
I just got a practically new timeline (only one month of use) for around $250 USD. I've wanted a timeline for like 6 years now and can't wait to dig in to it!
Ever since the update and going to 8 blocks, I’ve been running my timeline and big sky in the stereo fx loop, sounds unreal.
You’re right though, there is a small difference with the loop active, I can hear it by turning the loop on and off. Perhaps using the kill dry on the timeline and running the mix at the loop of the stomp would fix that
What a fucking legend.
Hi John, have you thought of getting a secondhand HX Stomp and using some of the Legacy effects as well as the newer processor-heavy ones that way you have a looper and eight blocks free for CPU intensive settings and it'll integrate with the HX Stomp nicely and be capable of much more than the Strymon? PS Your tones / playing is always beautiful \m/
I’ve always wanted to try a timeline. I’ve been loving the source audio nemesis though without my midi pedal it can be kind of basic
Along your lines of thinking, I picked up a Source Audio Collider for the Delay/Reverb after the Stomp to free up DSP. What with the Command Center available now to Stomp users, the midi relationship between the two makes it a no-brainer. Granted, I do use it in the FX loop so I can put it wherever I want in the chain of blocks.
It's cool init! I need to figure out whether I want to check out the Midi functionality or just keep it kinda simple?
The presets are what make the strymon the only downside is cost £350-399 for a delay ! Wowza buy 2 stomps ? !
Sweet tone & playing @ 6:22. I’m an old school tube amp guy but am really considering modeling ie; HX/Helix, Fractal FM III, etc. I’m skeptical about many “patch” fed instruments. My old studio I used lots of Keyboards for sequencing, etc(I’m not a keyboard player) but the best patches were always on the “expansion” boards. And of course you had to buy them separately. And I like the familiarity of pedals. Scrolling through menus isn’t fun(for me). Have you tried all the top 3 modelers? Just wandering which has the best presets out of the box. I’ve heard the Fractal. I ALSO have no idea! 😂
Any chance you can share the whole uninterrupted tune you were playing from start to end? And nice video btw. Thank you.
excellent tone at 6.22 of the video.
Oo I never gave the Ice Delay a chance cus I thought it'd be weird and crap all over stuff. But it sounds gorgeous!
Man I love it. I know some people think it sounds cheesy, but I love cheddar
@johnnathancordy The song you play in this video is exquisite ! Are the backing track and the tabs (chords) available on your patreon ?
I’m 1min 44 in and it sounds like Ricky Gervaise bought a timeline 😂 love it
How do you rate the Timeline vs the Volante? I made a decision a couple of years ago to really commit to certain choices, and focus on gear that was less "jack of all trades" and more "master of one". As I gravitated towards tape style delays, Volante was an easy relatively easy choice. I have it after Iridium - another pedal that doesn't try to be everything, but does what it does really well. And not a menu in sight. (BTW, I used a DL4 for years - it broke before I felt the need to replace it otherwise).
So - I had the Volante too - BUT I never really felt about it like I do about this. It's all down to taste of course, but these ICE delays, and the hold for swell and stuff like that is exactly the kind of thing that I dig in a pedal? Also the way this looper works suits me a lot better than the Volante looper.
Not that there's anything wrong at all with the Volante of course!
I was having this debate last week between the Strymon Timeline and Empress Echosystem. I went with Empress to see if it lives up to the hype.
I think Jake has an Empress Reverb thingy which was also cool!!
honestly it's still one of the best sounding digital delay pedals, it ducks pretty well. I sold mine some time ago and dont really regret it, but then I dont gig and if I want a different delay sound I can just grab a different delay off the shelf (I have a LOT, like at least 10 at last count)
Yeh - I personally only (I say only...it still seems like too many) have like three other delay pedals - and one is mono....
Timeline is still king of delay pedals... The dual delay and sound-on-sound looper capabilities are still unmatched... Next best would be the Future Factory and DD-500 for their different capabilities...
How do you feel this setup compares to just getting a full helix. Is it still a much smaller footprint and lower price? Is the functionality getting close by freeing up those blocks you’d use for delay and looper?
The Full Helix is still maybe 3 times the size of the Stomp/TimeLine combo? But of course you'd have lots of potential with a full Helix.
I feel like there's maybe a bit of a consensus that the Strymon delays are like industry leading and for instance the "Ice" algorithm I can't imitate with the Helix as far as I can tell
I had the same late to the orgie experience with the BigSky in November. I had been looking for a new reverb pedal for a while, I went through like 3 different high-end reverb pedals before I decided to pull the trigger on a BigSky. I knew it was a good pedal, I knew it was hyped, I new everybody loved it, but I just didn't properly believe it I guess since it was so old, and I'm probably too much of a hipster to want to go with the most popular choice right away. But, it was THE reverb pedal I had been looking for all along, and it made me ejaculate in a way I guess, so missing the orgie was not that big of a deal, I'm happy now!
Now you're the second person to mention this BigSky and I'm thinking maybe that's another party I need to attend?
@@johnnathancordy You should! It'll be great still!
I went with a Big Sky a few years ago and it definitely is another world. The reverbs are heavenly. John will be completed with a Big Sky.
@@tossedpenny well you've said it now. Sigh.
@@johnnathancordy You won't regret it. It's right up your alley given your tasteful and skilled use in the way of the verb. You're going to fall in love all over again. It's that good.
Unbelievable
Jeff?
@@Whiskeyklone Definitely Kammy
The final jam felt very Steve Vai!!!
Yep. I would say it's still king.
I have a Source Audio Nemesis I got on special (Prymaxe deal! Love those guys) and while I certainly like it, there's no analog dry-thru. This is a problem for wet/dry (phwooar!), but Timeline is very pricey in Australia, even on the used market. I like the SA, it does pretty much everything I need in a delay, but that lack of a dry-thru path is a real bugger (phwooar, eh!). Apparently it can be solved with a parallel mixer (no rudeness or innuendo in that one).
Maybe I'll sell and buy a Timeline, idk. I'm still trying to get the image of Rabea and Rhett at an Eyes Wide Shut party out of my head, damn you
This could take some time...
Yeh so the Source Audio stuff I hear crazy good stuff about.
Price is an issue for sure - even second hand this was £280 which is well....
BUT it's actually Stereo so? I dunno I'm trying to justify it
@@johnnathancordy
Right, so for once it's not just Aussies getting screwed on the gear market! I shouldn't be smiling about that sorry mate :)
Great playing during this vid. Landau influence is strong in this one, methinks. That is also pricey :)
You've cleverly outsourced some DSP to the Timeline. Nice.
@@mattgilbert7347 lol yeh I guess it's a good thing that the Strymon stuff holds its value? Means we can try second hand stuff and not really worry about losing out if we don't dig?
I’m one of the few who prefers the Nemesis tones to the Timeline. But functionality wise the Timeline is hard to beat with the screen, three switches, analog dry, spillover, looper etc.
@@Sperzel Nemesis has such great tones. The algorithms tend towards slightly darker tones than the Timeline. If I had the $$ I'd maybe consider the Collider, that's an amazing unit.
@johnnathancordy
Strymon always Digs. :)
Dude, you should consider stand up :) That was a great intro ~
Absolutely wonderful sounds... just lovely... can I get your barbers address please?

2years later with all the updates to hx stomp would you still run your timeline post Stomp or possibly in the FX loop? Thanks!!
I owned and gigged with a Timeline for maybe 7 years (can't remember when I got it, was the year after it was released) and I sold it last year when I bought a Helix Floor. To be honest I think the Timeline is a bit overrated and I haven't missed it much at all. The only thing I'd like that the Helix doesn't do is the Ice mode, other than that if anything for me the Helix delays are a bit better.
I'm so late to the orgy. But man I'm loving it - with the Floor it wouldn't make loads of sense, but with the Stomp it's like quite a powerful pairing I thought?
@@johnnathancordy Oh ye for sure. Don't get me wrong it was king for a long time and it's impressive even now given how old it is. With the limited processing capacity of a stomp it makes total sense. I just think if you used the stomp only as a delay you'd have a better delay than the Timeline.
@@actionarnie78 that might be interesting to try?
The helix delays are better ! 🤪 what you listening through 2 slices of bread ! Nah way off !
@@lukather1 hehe, just my opinion of course, I've used both extensively for live and recording
Maybe what you need is an HX Effects to go with your HX Stomp, to spread the DSP load out but still live in HX world as far as programming. I play more acoustic than electric and recently got an HX Effects, with the idea that I could use it with my acoustics (using the IR block for acoustic guitar IRs to process suboptimal pickup signals), and then pair it with an HX Stomp eventually (to replace an Eleven Rack, and let me interoperate with HX Native on my computer). I don't have a Stomp yet, but that's my tentative plan. Your Stomp work has definitely been an influence on this plan. -Tom
That..is a pretty damn cool idea. I have a Pod Go instead of an HX Stomp, but the idea is the same. I gotta think about this...
You might be late to having a Timeline pedal but your guitar playing is light years ahead of those other guys
Hi, i know it has been 2 years. Just trying my luck here.
How do set the delay at about 11.50? I can't seems to get there.
Thanks
Does the amount of dust on your timeline improve the aged tape sound?
More dust, more tone
How does the fm3 fit into the picture?
Currently building a board incorporating the Hx effects as the brain, Hx stomp for amps/cabs w/ available dsp for other effects., Strymon BS, for rebs TL for delays. Hopefully in the near future add the Strymon Night sky and Microcosm for improv/ambient stuff. #fuckit #ohfuckme
I bought it in 2021 :)))
The Strymon Timeline fits your style perfectly! Your metaphors are really going to help my no fap journey....
This or Volante though??
It looks like there are multiple functions that can be accessed for each of the 3 buttons on the HX Stomp that can make them behave like many more buttons. That, combined with the "Bypass Assign" feature makes carrying out multiple changes of numerous parameters fairly simple. It's crazy what can be done.
Here's a link to a video where Jason Sadites shows how to use the "Bypass Assign" function. In this case, to dial in the Arbitrator Fuzz: ruclips.net/video/xFRUgAJVPX4/видео.html
Thanks
Yeh of course you can do loads with one button switch!
