Cool delay rundown, Rhett. That intro, however, was truly something. You should absolutely continue combining your music and/or demonstrations with those visuals. You clearly have a knack for it.
Really enjoy the casual approach you have to your videos. They are very easy to watch and listen to. And you of course have great content. Keep up the good work man!
Rhett, finally someone share how he is using delays. Thanks! I love this personal, practical tips how "pros" using their gear... especially for live shows. I would be happy for the same video but with reverb. Thanks man :)
That 1st off the hook effect with adjusting the delay with knobs great! Brought back some memories of my early playing days using my pedals to the extreme. Achieving a Thermin effect of sorts. You were getting close to intro to Welcome To The Machine
If you've listened to Rhett's guitar playing over the past few years you know he has no real reason to use any kind of effect pedal. He is that good. I, on the other hand, need all the pedal tricks I can get. So Thanks for the great video, Rhett.
@@ramon2008 he is, he’s in two bands, Noah Guthrie and good trouble as well as Jessie Wilson’s band. Check out his backstage live shows. Also he does stuff in all his other videos
Loved this. Thx. I like when you show how you dialed up the effects. I am new to the strymon world and it has so much to offer. You give a little insight into what each know does etc. Thx
I've got a Big Sky and a Timeline.... They were pricey but they were worth it. Even if you save to save up, do it. Insane amount of options.. Oh, and for anyone who wants both but can't figure out which one to ge first, it's the Big Sky. I love both but after having both for over half a year now, getting the Big Sky first is such an easy suggestion. If I could only keep one of them it would take me approximately 1 second to pick the Big Sky. Also, unless you're REALLY into delay options, the Timeline might not be the best pick for you. I love having all of the options but even I'll admit that 90% of the time I'm only really playing with the tape and digital delays. And some of the delay types I basically never use unless I'm just goofing around. Last bonus tip if you have a Big Sky and a Timline: randomly flip to presets on each pedal. Just randomly scroll and stop on one (for each pedal). Then play around with it... It might prove useless but sometime you'll stumble across something that inspires you to play a certain way, and then bang, you're playng something new. It's a fun exercise that might accidentally lead you into something cool, and at the very least it's just fun.
First video of yours I've seen, not even halfway through it, and I'm subscribing. I appreciate the way you break down what's going on and explain its place in the sound.
Luv how subtle delay and reverb can be added to parts that bring in that earthy ambience effect adding depth setting the mood for the track!! Thanx as always for the insight!!
I have the Bigsky and am getting ready to buy the Timeline. Strymon is the only way to go in my book. No other reverb and delay pedals sound as good. Love your tips for getting the right tone, which certainly is challenging but yet so much fun!
After spending too much time researching the various delay pedals I’ve settled on getting the timeline. I was earnestly looking at other pedals and companies so I could have a different setup. However, the timeline is just simply too good. And honestly, I think it’s a good price considering how good this device is.
Strymon is def the way to go… but now that I have the timeline, I really want the el capistan v2 also 😂… you can get most the way there with the timeline, but the capistan just has something extra/more character for tape delay. Strymon doesn’t really design for one or the other… it’s more here’s everything - and here’s some pedals to go even deeper into that preset you like (ie capistan with dTape… if you’re frequently using the dTape setting, you can go deeper and get more).
Admittedly, I didn't learn anything here but I enjoyed the video. The reason I didn't learn anything is because I was a pedal junkie before I got good at playing guitar. A couple years into my guitar journey I realized I was using pedals way too much to compensate for my limited abilities. Now, hopefully not sounding too arrogant, I'm really good with pedal tweaking and am a pretty damn good guitar player (of course to this is extremely relative)... The combination of the two, however, I think makes me stand out among my peers in the small town I'm from. Anyway, enough about me... Great content as usual. You were one of the people who convinced me to purchase a Helix. Time to go into outer space delay world. Peace
Glad I found this. Although you can use "any delay", I just acquired a Timeline and wondered if I should keep it. Seemed overwhelming. Now, I'm determined to dig in and create the presets that first, give me these "tricks" (which are mostly sounds we all know and love) then create some of my own. Beats the hell out of getting beat up on forums! Thanks.
when i used to play live a lot with my band, i was really into the chaotic delay thing , i still am, but it broke my heart when in a deep space trip on stage i heard someone from the audiance scream at his friends "gosh that band sucks it's horrible" ! now it makes me laugh because it was almost ten years ago, but i've been echo blocked live !
I must say, the intro songs you put together for these videos, are absolutely amazing. I have no doubt you could easily and quickly create generic, by the numbers jams which would sound just fine. That you don't do this, choosing to put some creative effort out instead, makes these compositions that much cooler. They're interesting, unique and definitely sound amazing.... Style for days! Much appreciated!
Love these vids that you do! Although I've been playing acoustic since the 70's, I'm new to electric starting a couple of years ago. Learning the basics and the nuances of pedals can be overwhelming. Your clarity and straightforward approach is refreshing. (I found you from the recent video you did with Tim Pierce. I'm glad I did!)
Great tips! 12:30 and 13:30 parts are essentially what Tom Scholz of Boston is doing on his famous 'hyperspace pedal' sound effect machine...only his is on an old analog Echoplex tape echo and of course, super modified.
The ending: how people make sounds for horror movies. Haha such a cool creepy sound when the delay and verb go crazy like that. Seriously thanks for the tips, they are super helpful.
@@BrianElliot Yeah, definitely a killer album!! It is amazing what Hendrix was doing with the technology of his time, and in a very musical/creative way.
I was always a fan of using two delay pedals. First one in the chain doing dotted 8’s second one straight 4’s with the mix set relatively high. Delay of a delay would certainly give some interesting sounds when done properly.
I norally don't watch or follows "guitar vlogs" or what you call it, but you have so much good stuff I can't help but susbcribe and dive into your videos. You are amazing!

Cool Video. The tape setting and the 5th tip is the essence of the solo in Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin. cool to see it recreated with a digital petting
As I used to say "who needs drugs"? I haven't played hardly any in the past 30 years but I'm starting to get the fever to jam again. That was neat, thanks.
Cool stuff Rhett!! Now I'm convinced I don't need a chorus pedal on a pedalboard with a delay!!The reverse delay thingy is also SICK!!!!Keep it up bro!!!
Thanks Rhett for the video, some great ideas for the woodshed and the Timeline. Let me add to some of the others a Big Sky video would be greatly appreciated. Nice work!
That reverse delay though...😳 that is cool, I gotta try that. Another way to get a chorus effect with delays that I like to do is split your signal and run each signal through two different delays each with the repeats off and time set real low (like under 50 milliseconds) and each at a different time setting. This creates two signals slightly out phase causing a chorus effect to be heard. Pat Matheny does this kind of thing.
great stuff Rhett. Thanks so much for the in depth tutorial. I am really impressed with the Timeline and cannot wait to purchase one! Look forward to more videos.
I use a carbon copy and last night I discovered a gnarly reverb like tone on it. I'm a one man band playing music that's described as punk rock meets the Beatles!
I spent 5 years in an 8 piece oldies show band in the 90's as a keyboard player. We also had a 5 piece band when that wasn't working enough, I played guitar in that one. I've enjoyed your look at life on the road. Just getting to that point where you start full time can be a real struggle. There is no plan B? You can't consider anything else if you want to play for a living.
Great video! You reinforced some my old believes (many of which took years to understand) - and taught me several new things. Look forward to giving my Timeline a work out. You have a new fan!
John Hawkins I'd have to disagree. I got a Carbon Copy and a DD-5 on my board. With a plastic piece glued to the mod button on the CC and the tap tempo switch added to the DD-5 gives me control on a lot of what he's doing. Now so far I'm not smart enough to figure out these without seeing and hearing what he's doing and that's why I'm here. That's key to what the Edge does. He uses delays and reverbs to add "character to simple parts". Does it brilliantly.

Reverse delay is definitely the hardest to find a practical use for, seems like you need to really tailor the riff to fit it, some great ideas here
"Strawberry Swing" does it perfectly
Also “Walking on air” by King Crimson
The first 5 minutes was “how to play at a church” haha
so true
Hah! For real!
Right? I play at church, but I don't play like that lol too cliche
I really don't know how it is in the States, but if here in Italy music in church was like that I could (a little) be more fond to churches 🤣
@@PTosetti Some churches here do a great job at this sound and some do a poor knockoff of the sound, it gets pretty silly sometimes haha
With lo-fi type delay you can turn the time to only 2ms instead of 30ms, so then you can get the chorus effect without the slapback.
Fitter, happier... more productive!
