You guys could put together a full pedalboard with all Rabea’s choice from this and the previous videos on this series! I think it would sound nice! But with Rabea playing anything sounds nice 👏🏻
Yes! It was killing me every time Rabbea mentioned the ARP was too dark when the Captain was oblivious that he was interpreting the Dampen knob incorectly. It's a cut knob. It needs to be put up full at the start and then trimmed back to taste. The Captain can't be expected to know all the knob nuances - but the ARP would have dared even better if he'd known. Regardless, the ARP showed itself amazingly. (Yes, the ARP is my main delay!)
The flutter on El Cap is probably the Tape Crinkle. I didn't like it much either and dialled it completely out.- it's a secondary function so probably wouldn't have been obvious when running the test. As always, really enjoyed the video guys!
haha that tape crinkle is why I love the Strymon dtape algo and sounds the closest to my real tape echo when its on a long delay time/slow tape speed. Different strokes.
@@bakerfamily3187Wait A MINUTE!!! Did I just see two people civilly agree to disagree? About music gear?? On RUclips???? Oh Lord, the end of days is upon us... :-)
I don't think the Polymoon got a proper shot. You should have turned the phaser off (or at least down from that ridiculous setting) and allowed Bea to just judge the sound of the delay itself
I agree..You can get anything from Bog standard mono Delay to Stereo Delay..It even has a high and low pass filter..they had the Flanger on.. which is brilliant anyway..But they should have turned it off for what they wanted...
I love hearing Rabea's ambient/delay/reverb stuff. Every time you hear him play like this you sink into this whole new world of amazing things and feelings and your imagination starts producing some beautiful stories and pictures in the eye of your mind. So sad yet beautiful and inviting melodies. I never get tired of hearing stuff like this.
For the money, the Dispatch Master is surprisingly good. It's not a high-end Strymon competitive delay pedal. But for a low-cost reverb/delay combo pedal, it's really toneful.
I wonder if the "winner stays on" shootout method is a bit inherently flawed, in that even if the first pedal is really good, eventually the listener will kind of tire of that sound and eventually pick a new pedal. Oh, well, it's all in good fun anyway.
I love the ambient delay thing, but there was one big problem with how the ARP87 was set up. I know it’s all personal preference but always have the x knob closeish to center and turn the dampen knob all the way to the right then bring it down until you like it. That’s how you get the best sound from that pedal.
How could you take the world's greatest delay pedal, The Polymoon, out after a few seconds only because you couldn't find out how to use it properly!? So disappointed. Someone at Anderton's set it to be super modulated, since that's not it's basic setting, so someone there must know how to set it. Well, shame on Meris to have made their pedal so versatile that it can be set to all kinds of sound.
It is weird that he immediately didn't care for the carbon copy, but the Bucket Brigade won a round. The BB is literally the same pedal in a different box and sounds identical.
@@jordan-c-bay pretty much. They put one of the modulation knobs on the front (the carbon copy has both of them inside). There is also a "bright" version of the carbon copy. Maybe Rabea would have liked that better.
Exactly. I have Carbon Copy deluxe because I need the tap tempo. But this is the type of delay I want. Delay that doesn't distract me and sits in the background. But I guess modern players just like all these shoegaze delays.
So glad to have Lee back directing these sorts of episodes. While Dave Simpson is a very talented, charismatic guitar player, his perfectly logical vision of: "All you need is to learn how to play the song and play it well" didn't really inspire GAS hobbyists such as myself. I want all the guitars. I want all the amps. I want all the pedals. So HELP ME.
That Carbon copy is not normal. The mix knob is definitively not behaving like it should, it's very dark and the internal knobs for the mod are definitively not in their original position. This is a very extreme modulation.
Come on guys - you dissed the Meris Polymoon, because it had loads of modulation. Why not just dial it out ? - Yes it is possible. Using amp reverb is also a strange choice - why ? Apart from that I think you are right on the money. The Strymon El Cap sounds glorious, but you might want to get rid of the tape crinkle and the spring reverb. The Strymon Brig is also amazing. Cheers
Shame about El Cap. That flutter is the tape crinkle, which is a separate control that can be turned off. Still, I think Brig was the best sounding of the bunch and definitely deserved to win.
I think if Rabea could play each pedal ahead of time, finding his preferred setting for each and THEN do a blind shootout. I think that would ensure each pedal is getting its fair shot and not being dismissed due to a bad setting.
Think the reason Bea is liking that Arp digital so much besides it just being awesome... is he's really feeling that Overdrive tone and the pedal is really swishing that sound around the room.
Yea I know!!It's the Flanger they had on.. Which is great btw..The Polymoon blows all of these out of the water..It can get tons of amazing sounds..Bog standard delay is only a small part of it..
This is such an epic series. Suggested evolution of the concept: create a price point league. Start with the current winning pedals and run through them again up against 5 comparable pedals at same or similar price points. This would be super helpful for consumers. Then you could run an ‘All Price’ final to make it interesting at the end. An Andertons Pedal World cup if you will.
Really love that ARP-87... been on my wishlist for a while... and I've meant to pull the trigger on the mini TC bucket brigade! This video solidifies it for me!
On the Walrus ARP-87 Rabea said the repeats were "dark"; the Dampen knob was turned counterclockwise, turning it clockwise would have brightened the sound of the repeats. When he liked it early on the knob was at 12 o'clock and later (when he said it sounded dark) it was at 9 o'clock.
The more I watch these blind shootouts, the more I realize that sounds are so based off what YOU like, I’m not even siding with reabeas choice but the fact that I can find a delay pedal out of this that fits my ears is dope, that’s the point right? Awesome vid 🤘🏽
Blindfold and shootout challenges are so fun. You should consider do them twice , one with Rabea and one with Pete for the same effect. They have their own taste. I would be in!
Considering you guys have done like four of these at this point I feel like you already know this, but legitimately, I would watch about 50 different versions of this series. No idea why it's so good, but I've watched every single minute.
The timeline sounded amazing when I had it. It was a little complicated for me but think it definitely gets a strong convincing sound. I remember really liking the tape and dbucket modes a lot.
I really liked both of the Walrus pedals - I can't like the Strymon sound the way others do. I do wonder if a different type of guitar would have affected Rabea's choice. The Sire is not the brightest sounding 'S' type guitar, but it's not as dark as a Les Paul. Do guitarists who use both use the same delay on both I wonder?
Well, that was great and it really opened my eyes for as what to look for in a delay pedal and I completely agree with Rabea's choice for the top 3-4 and winner!
The Walrus ARP-87 was 'dark because you had the 'tone' knob nearly all the way down - If you cranked that up it would have gotten brighter lol, and then at the end you had the modulation on too... I have one and they are amazing...
Capt Lee. While I appreciate your attempts to keep track, that shoot out should've included both Strymon's because he liked them the most. We ALL know why.
Now I'm curious if after any of these shootouts, Bea actually purchased any of the pedals that were winners or in the demo (of course assuming he didn't have them already).
Maybe Rabea should set his favourite sound on each pedal then shootout the sounds. That will allow each pedal to be used to its full potential. Love to Rabea!
Good shootout guys. I think I preferred the Walrus Fundamental by a little over the Brig with the Bucket Brigade in a close to a tie with the Brig. for me the REAL bonus is that The Fundamental and the Bucket Brigade are MUCH more affordable. At least 50% less than the Strymon. I'd love a Timeline but I could never afford even a used one.
You can turn the modulation off on the polymoon by turning the dimension all the way down. Bummer it didn’t get a proper go…it’s truly an amazing delay
Great demo of delays! I love the Carbon’s simplicity and have used that a lot but the timeline and El Capistan are on my boards. I agreed with Rabea every time and the Walrus pedals impressed me and even the Boss sounded better than my old Boss delays. Why didn’t you include the Halo?
Was looking forward to this as I am searching for a Tape Delay pedal to accompany my ARP-87, but this really wasn't much help. I usually enjoy this series as well as the ones with Danish Pete but these delays have so many iterations, voices, settings etc it's almost impossible to do a valid comparion. Lee fussing with the knobs every 20 seconds making comparisons pretty much invalid doesn't help either, tbh. Kudos for giving it a go, but this one's a miss for me.
All I see now are the Victory amps directly behind Lee. Nothing on the set is there by happenstance and the dishonesty to both the public and vendors is off putting to say the least.
I need my first delay pedal. Would the Boss dm2 be good to start with? Mostly to fill out some leads and also as a mild background effect. Nothing over the top. Or rowed a mxr cc that I can’t seem to make work for me.
At the end you guys should make a video with Rabeas ultimate pedal board created with the #1 pedals he chose from each of these videos
That’s a great idea
I said the same thing a video or two ago. It would be awesome.
I love this idea
Would just be boss and strymon pedals
@@traviscrown9189 given that's 70% of my pedals, I'm with the program.
I like how you brought back the three in the end.
Please do a Rotary Shootout in the future! ♥️
My only criticism is the lack of a Keeley Halo in the group. I would’ve loved to see Rabea’s blind reaction to it.
itd be cool to include the hxfx into this as well
Please another "winner stays on" with Bea...pleeeeeease
40+ minutes of Rabea playing is always an instant watch.
Always a treat!
Indeed
My thoughts exactly!
Rabea: "There's this weird flutter..."
Lee: Turns the literal Flutter control down.
😆
I’d love to see Rabea do one of these with modulation pedals like chorus, phaser, flanger, tremolo, etc.
He already did chorus… simple search you’ll find it
@@traviscrown9189 I know that Lee did it with Pete and it’s a great video but I’m saying that I’d like to see it done with Rabea as well

I must say I am impressed at how you have gone this long, Lee, without accidentally revealing what the pedal is called to the blindfoldee. Hats off.
With the Arp-87, you need to turn dampen clockwise to brighten it up, so the Captain was actually keeping it dark for Rabea
I was about to comment this.
They should have named it a brighten knob instead of dampen. It is confusing if you don't know.
Yeah he kept turning it darker throughout.
