Dude, you are such a fantastic guitarist. I really enjoy the way you move around the neck. I feel the same way about my pedals. If it works I'm happy... I have had Strymon products for years, and years. They sound really high end, and for the most part they function very well.
You can play , you'll dial in what tone is needed and be Shawn Tubbs. At the end of the day, it's what we hear you create that matters and plenty of followers enjoy that. Keep it coming!
I have probably one of the most "cliche" pedalboard on the planet. I have a Styrmon DIG and it works. It's what I am comfortable with and what works for me. You are a fantastic player. So keep being "unoriginal" all you want. You're better than most players.
I'm with you, Shawn! The big Strymon's are incredible with the G3 midi switching system! I know you don't have one on your board, but the Mobius is insane for someone who wants a little bit of everything when it comes to modulation without having a bunch of individual pedals taking up space and power on the board.
Lol. I’ve tried almost every delay on the market. I have an El Cap and a Timeline on my board. Um, yeah. I pay the bills with my guitar and they just work on a clock in and out basis. The crowd certainly doesn’t care. 🍻
I hear ya on the Timeline. I was very late to the party and got a Timeline around a year ago, but im more than content with it. It does everything i need it to do and buying any other delay pedal would be nothing more than giving in to my G.A.S. (which is already bad. 🤣) i would love to have a Clockworks though. I tend to use the Analog delay setting a lot in the Timeline and that has me longing for an actual analog Memory Man type of delay, but its unnecessary for me.
Shawn, I have to say that your pedalboard is outstanding. The wiring is clean! I love the G3 Gigrig too. I was just wondering, what company makes the pedalboard, is it XTS? Are your pedals held down by Velcro as well? Honestly, if you wanted, you could probably do a pedalboard building video. I think a lot of people would appreciate it. Plus, you could rep products you like/are potentially sponsored by.
Yep, the boys at XTS did all of it. The board itself is a custom size and made at the shop as well as all of the cabling. The pedals are indeed held down with Dual Lock.
The gear chase is kina hilarious. I remember when the TimeLine and Big Sky were the creme de la creme, and now it's almost embarrassing to have them on your board, hahaha.... but honestly, if they work for you, who cares? The endless journey to find THE TONE is pretty ridiculous, all things considered. What's more important: the gear or the song? My current delay/verb setup is super simple, but definitely gets the job done for me: Boss DM-2W, MXR Reverb, and Seymour Duncan Dark Sun (for everything from a simple delay to all out crazy ambient swells that last forever). I keep thinking of adding something more functional, but really, why? It wouldn't really add anything for me, so I'm sticking with these things for now.
the Strymon Timeline is a phenomenal pedal, but I find I most use the Source Audio Collider. for me it's very easy to dial the sounds of the delays and reverbs I need, and it's also pedalboard friendly.
Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! The Timeline sounds fantastic! I’m still using my old Boss DD-3, my delay needs are simple and I’m used to the way it sounds. Just curious though if you’ve checked out the Keeley Halo? Seems like it can do a lot, store pre-sets, etc., and takes up less space on the pedalboard than the Strymon.
Great video Shawn. Yes, I do agree that the Strymon Timeline delay is a killer sounding pedal. So why change it? It just works.... However, the good old 80s Lexicon PCM70 a la Lukather wet dry rig was also killer sounding. But that is another story for the younger cats. Cheers Shawn.
I love that people are actually like, "instead of using one of the greatest delays made in the last decade - which clearly does what you like - why don't you spend a ton of time searching for something that does the same thing but is more 'original'?" No doubt the opinion of very accomplished players with huge musical pedigrees too. We literally live in a time where internet trolls, who should be spending more time practicing and playing with other musicians, feel entitled to judge whether the equipment of some of the greatest musicians alive is worthy of their use. The internet is weird.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with sticking with tried and true. I can easily get overwhelmed with deep dive techno. I then have to ask myself, have I gotten anything better by spending all that time?
a few month i bought a timeline.for my board, too, although its over 10 years sinxe it xabe out. if you need certain bpm presets and xou"re not into too compicared programming it is the device to go but the greatest delay for me is my delay llama Supreme by jam pedals. i havent heard a digital device that is able to replicate these incredible organic sounds....it lives.
Cool video as always Shawn, seemed like it had been a while, always hanging for more tone tips 😃. I'm loving the Halo! My other go-to delay/reverb - CMATmods DEEELAY; Boss Space Echo, Giga Delay and DM2w; JHS 3 Series Delay and Panther Cub; TC Electronic G-Major rack still comes out from time to time and the Skysurfer, for BIG ambient the little Mooer A7 is fun. On a side note; anyone who spends their time making snarky comments online about other peoples pedal boards is going to have very little of value to offer the conversation. I'm sure Shawn could pull better sounds with a Boss GT1 or Line 6 M5 then some troll could with their dream board.
Boss rv6 reverb truetone h2o for delay and vibrato sounds. Shimmer setting on rv6. Echo side of h2o set the tempo of Odds by MuteMath. I use delay for swells and melodic post rock lead guitar stuff mostly.
I’ve been contemplating for a few years now about buying a Timeline but keep buying other delays mainly because I can’t find the room on the board. All I need is a short and long delay and I want the quality that the Timeline produces. I’ll just have to find a way! Do you think i could get old Lexicon sounds from it?Thanks for the video Shawn!
Hey Shawn Alfred here 🙂. My first delay was an Echoplex! Wish I never sold it! Then I bought a TC 2290 from you and the guys at Lab Sound. But the rack is too heavy to lug around these days. About a year ago I got the Timeline from Sweetwater my sales engineer Randy Poteete recommended it. He never steers me wrong. I use the Timeline to fatten up solos. But when I power down and power back up I always have to tweak it to how I like it. Does the Timeline do this for you? Great video Shawn! Love your playing man!
Interesting choice of pedals! While Strymon is amazing, eventide H9 is so plastic and digital sounding, the Suhr comp is one of the noisiest pedals. And while the Rat is a classic! There are many better takes on the Rat out there for sure. For example the white edition Rat has way more volume and gain than the black one for some reason!!
Playing sounds great, so it's working. 👍. There's a lot to be said for a pedal , that you just get on with, sounds musical in more than one setting, Plays well with the rest of your set up and smooths your core tone. Had a hardwire dl8 break so need a replacement. Nothing sounds as good as the old boss dd2, I use . Gassing to try the belle epoch with it. Not sure if that combination would work.
You don’t need to justify anything in your life to anyone else. Stay awesome 👏
The chords you were playing are sound always so beautiful in my ears
Thanks so much!

Glad to see an artist that doesn’t feed “GAS” to the public with the latest pedal trend. It’s okay to love the pedals you already own.
It's truly up to the individual but I do tend to stick with what I know works. Thanks for watching!
The modulation on the TimeLine tail is so glorious
It does sound nice! Thanks for watching!

DIG is incredible.
Thanks so much, you're too kind.
I love this delay pedal, still on my pedalboard since 2014. Thank Shawn 🙌🙌🙌

Yeah I just don't think the Timeline could ever get outdated, to me that would be like saying a Les Paul or a Deluxe Reverb is outdated.
Yup!

Love the Timeline. My favorite settings are Dual mode and Pitchmod.
Yeah, the dual mode is cool!! Thanks for watching!
Love the tones you get out of the strymon stuff, so usable! I use the vintage digital delay and the Ganymede reverb in the helix! Love them!
Right on! Thanks for watching!

XTS made Shawn's board & I think it uses Dual Lock for adhesion. We'll ask Shawn to do a deep dive on his board!
@@RevvAmps Awesome, I’m looking forward to that. Thanks guys!

Because the H90 wasn’t out yet??? Wait what

That H90 does look cool.

Shawn your chord work has always been incredible. Would love to know your approach
We'll ask Shawn to do another chord lesson soon!
Thanks, Tim. It's pretty accidental really. It always starts with a melody and then I just try and stuff things below it. ;)
the Strymon Timeline is a phenomenal pedal, but I find I most use the Source Audio Collider. for me it's very easy to dial the sounds of the delays and reverbs I need, and it's also pedalboard friendly.
I've heard that the Source Audio stuff is great!
VAVOOM, bro. I feel you, been trying to force myself to take advantage of my Source Audio but I usually drift back to my DD2 or my Lexicons/Rolands
Yeah, sometimes it's better to go with what has always worked. Thanks for watching!

Yeah, the Lexicon PCM 42, and PCM 70 are awesome as well as the Kork SD 3000.

I don't mind really. Seems like guitar players especially can get very adamant about things but it's to each his or her own. Thanks for chiming in!
Shawn - thoughts on the H9 vs the Mobius ?
Gearheads are the most insecure tryhards out there. Thanks for the vid Shawn. The hair is on point.

I'm still happy with my 500 series Boss pedal equivalents. But there's no denying the timeline is great
The Boss 500 series is fab!!

If I was buying a super mega delay today I would go for the Meris LVX, but the Timeline is not lacking.
Boss rv6 reverb truetone h2o for delay and vibrato sounds. Shimmer setting on rv6. Echo side of h2o set the tempo of Odds by MuteMath. I use delay for swells and melodic post rock lead guitar stuff mostly.

Since when did people start to think that original means good?

Yoo my effects are set up the same way but the eventide equivalents and the same h9 dark!

The DD2 is great! The Epoch is another more "Echoplex" flavor so it could be cool with the DD2.
Tell you what I’d be thrilled with a Timeline and Big Sky.
Knowing your gear is arguably more valuable than finding that ‘special’ thing. The ‘how unoriginal’ comment…well..how unoriginal.
Well, put!
Whenever I get GAS I just turn my Type knob and I’m cured.
Halo - Keeley, the best delay i’m playing.
I've heard great things about it for sure!
Gonna start going around on jobsites and finding people with Estwing hammers so I cant tell them how "Original" they are.
If you can't find something inspiring in the Timeline, your not trying.
To say playing a timeline is in unoriginal and that same person probably plays a strat sg or LP style guitar 😅
True. ;)
