I can notice that you have said all the Arabic Sultan's names in the last episode about the upcoming update... you said the names in a very good way! really I didn't expect that from you! in addition to that you are getting me more amazed with saying the French words also correctly! 😂😂
Fun Fact: At level five she gets burnt at the stake for witchcraft and you lose her. You win the game when you bring your flag to the enemy base though.
I personally would rather the devs be experimental with their game design than timid and overly safe, so I welcome a hero civ (although centering it around a specific historical figure is still a strange choice ngl) and I imagine if players end up hating it, then we simply won't see more hero civs in the future, at least until they tweak this into something players enjoy
I don't mind "hero" characters, but its just this format that bothers me. I prefer something unspecific, such as the English king. I could imagine other cool hero units, such as the Japanese Shogun or an Ottoman Sultan. These are non-specific "leader" type roles that I personally prefer. I like to imagine each match is a unique battle, and it's hard to look at it that way when there is this very specific character that I am going to have to fight every time I get the matchup. It's not the end of the world for me, but I still just don't like the design choice at all. It doesn't feel like it fits categorically or thematically.
It adds a new strategic layer to the game imo. Losing a hero could be a devastating loss to battle as is it would be historically. Troops losing morale and will to fight. In this case it would just be losing buffs instead of morale.
This just seems like French+. How does the rest of the civilization itself differ? Why would we ever pick vanilla French when we could have Hero French instead? What's the downside?
Jeanne d'Arc famously never killed in battle, choosing to carry a banner to be army moral rather than a warrior. - Jeanne d'Arc gets a canon in the game. Jeanne d'Arc is most famous for helping Orleans weather a siege, a very defensive situation. - Jeanne d'Arc's XP requirements discourages defensive plays. Slow clap...
IMO it was a missed opportunity to bring in a “crusader” civ. Also a French variant, also focused on a hero and their few companions, but super relevant to the DLC, and also much more ‘generic’ and therefore acceptable to history fans. Instead of Jeanne, you would have a “champion” that represents the likes of one of the original Crusaders such as Bohemond, Godfrey, Raymond of Toulouse, Tancred, etc. The only difference is that such champions didn’t act as peasants so the whole villager part may be strange. Unless that part represents a ‘champion’ from the People’s Crusade
I mean sure but you’re missing the point. Jeanne d’Arc has been divisive, so they could’ve just made it the crusader civ instead, and the work for that is minimal since all the assets are basically the same. You’re talking about creating a whole new variant civ
@@CouchTomato87 well yeah I'm saying if you want a crusader civ they can do that for one of the ones that have no variant, because I think Joan of Arc is a great idea and seems to work well. To me it wasn't a missed opportunity, and since it can be done still it's not really a missed opportunity just a cool idea in the same vein as the other variants that we can still get. I would like this to happen and since the fact is we have Joan I don't see the point of it having to be French
Good video. I really don't like how Joan of Arc was the one to be made into a Dynasty Warriors character, considering she never actually used her sword in combat, much less a gun. It just wasn't who Joan of Arc was, and never would've been.
I actually think this is may turn out to be a great interesting decision. Those that like the idea get a breath of fresh air, while those that hate this new idea… just… don’t have to play the Civ. In each game it’ll prob feel more like a campaign mission now where you have to worry about a “General” but balance is key to making this a good addition. I’m impressed with their willingness to try something so new and bold! It shows they’re willing to make mistakes to keep us all interested
I mainly want to know what Jeanne d'Arc _loses_ compared to the French, to maintain balance with this added new mechanic. Does Jeanne replace the age up landmarks?
The implication from her civ page on the website is that she doesn't progress through the "ages" as other civs do, so I'm really curious what that will mean. Is her civ technically always just in one "age?" Are things like gunpowder units available from the beginning but just prohibitively expensive in the early game? How does her faction change over time? Really interesting questions that I'm excited to see more about
Honestly, all bets for ''grounded realism'' at least for hero units, was when the english king wields a gigantic F-off sword in one hand that most people would have trouble using effectively with 2. While mounted....and using a shield. I really admire the ''out there'' nature of AoE4 civs, and they're just coming out with more really cool ideas. Sure it's not as a-symetrical as say SC2, but they're really putting out some cool and unique stuff per civ.
Thank you for this well-scripted and well-cut video! I always avoid watching other creator's videos on the Civ news to watch yours first (bc yours are so awesome to watch) I especially agree with your conclusion. I'm hyped mainly because we get new game mechanics and likely completely different emphasis on micro gameplay. This will be a civ which plays distinctly different than the existing civs. Hope the devs keep their philosophy of continuously introducing new concepts to keep things fresh! ❤
I think the option for a hero civ is really nice. I may not be the biggest fan of hero civs but I think this is overall a good choice, maybe we will get some wc3 players to check the game out and fall in love with it. If that's the case then I love it! This game needs more players because it is so damn good! Also if you don't like the hero civ then don't play it! There are 5 more civs coming this expansion that you can try out that are not hero focused
Fun fact: Joan of Arc was actually infamously talented as a gunpowder/cannon tactition. I want to say I even remember reading some accounts of her using a hand cannon when available and I know for sure her cannoneering skill came into particular play during the Siege of Orleans. All that said, Joan wielding a hand cannon and being a sorta "mobile siege unit" is actually a pretty firm nod to historical accuracy, just reinterpreted within the confines of the game. It's be particularly dope, imo, if she had an optional aura that increased the range, mobility, and reload speed of nearby cannons as that would be very on point for her irl. Anyway, thought I'd share. Her abilities are actually extremely grounded in reality, all things considered!
"Its a game" yeah sure, but some people wouldnt like it if you depicted Jesus smoking people with a rocket launcher or Muhammed doing kick flips. Choosing a great Saint and making her into a warrior doesnt sit well with a great deal of Catholics. If they really wanted to be respectful they would make her a buffing unit that rallies men/villagers and thats it, instead they give her a handcannon
New question. Do we think they might have confused Joan of Arc with the Knights of St. John and by the time they realized it they were too far in and just went with it?
I do like the fact that devs are opening to new mechanics in the game, even if this is something that is going off the boundaries of the core game concept. My only concern is that this hero civ be launch so OP that playing for example a 2vs2 match against French and J’Darc vs Two late games civs like Abassyd and Delhi could result in early rush, and massive win for those civs that have bonuses on early games, and result in frustration in those that do not buy the DLC and prefer late game civs. I hope that you can start sharing more details regarding this new civs and we could have an open beta to test and buff these new mechanics before the launch day. Bad speculation and bias from another games could result in a bad mood on players before the DLC arrives. Even if there is some OP mechanic, I know that by experience Relic has a right game engine to change a whole mechanic to something different they have in mind (I have seem it in games like CoH2 where they change the factions mechanics for Brits and OKW many times) so there is hope they get in the right direction if things start to go in a bad direction.
If i got to make a variant i would have for sure it would be a Archduchy of Austria Focused on Maximiliam I army so centered about landsknetch changing some units to be more inline Pikemen instead of spearmen Handgunners instead of crossbowmen And more focused on doppels than men at arms With unique recruitment (maybe more expensive but faster) to represent the mercenary army
This doesn’t feel like age anymore. I’d rather not have an entire civ based on a hero, and rather it be a selective style to play but even then this looks dumb. Probably not gonna play age 4 after this dlc, pretty bummed out ngl
- 1. Finally the devs are experimenting and doing something new, instead of spaming the samish uninspiring boring mass produced DLCs like everyone else does. The devs deserve a praise for their bravery and creativity, instead of all that irrational hate out of pure conservatism and fear of any change.
@@olegdragora2557 Yes yes like introducing lightsabres or dragons to the game. It would certainly be "experimental" and "new". Hero units like this belong in DOTA 2. You want to play DOTA 2? Go and do that and leave Age to those of us who enjoy Age.
Reading what the devs said on Variant civs, they told that the variant civ will focused on history either from a historical figure perspective or cultural perspective. Like Zhu Xi legacy, now I can understand either it emphasize Zhu Xi administrational works or Zhu Xi himself. Sadly I hope they lean more to AoE2 route not the Warcraft route. Make a variant from base civ with little tweaks on the armies or mechanics. Maybe instead Jeanne of Arc, how about House of Burgundy who still have French as base mechanic and army, but they can recruit mercenaries and change spearman with foot soldier/spear with shield (to depict Burgundy's "Lance" formation because they remove feudal levy). Or Teutonic Order which focused on usage of Prelates buff in warfare more. Or maybe just do like what they did to Sultan's army name, changed to "Ayyubids" dynasty or other forgotten civilization on middle-late medieval era, simple as that and everybody is happy.
@@blecaobeing unique is good, AoE4 is sure bring out the uniqueness than AoE2. But straying to an extreme change of gameplay is risky and questionable. From civ to civ war, to a micro focused hero leveling unit is quite a challenge on balancing and how the core fanbase acceptance.
I look at it from a gameplay-first perspective, which is just my personal take. In this case, would a Burgundian faction genuinely offer a substantially better variant than Jeanne? I see Jeanne as presenting the opportunity for a civ structure that has literally never been introduced in the franchise before. Not everyone will like it; hell, I might try it myself and find that the playstyle isn't right for me. But it is definitely different and unique, and from a gameplay perspective, that's great. Is Burgundy different enough from the French that it would warrant being a full civ with all the bells and whistles? Or would it just be a France reskin with a few small changes? If it followed the variant civ vision, would it offer a significantly more unique or fun experience than Jeanne's faction? In the current game, the second option (reskin with few changes) doesn't currently exist, and I'm glad for that tbh
@@Vesmir789If the devs don't want to throw the mechanic, then changing the name to House of Valois is the best way possible to dissolve the confusion of the definition of "Civs" in AoE 4. Burgundy probably become like AoE2 route with very minor tweak like changing army composition or tech. Maybe it is bad and not expanding the broad gameplay that this game can offer, but we'll see how Jeanne d'Arc turned out to be, will The French civ get overshadowed by it? Will the balancing be easier in the future? Will the civ get reworked too frequently? I just hope the devs knew the consequences before introducing more extreme change in next dlc.
@ariswiryanta7038 Tbh, I don't mind the name staying as it is; Jeanne's faction is built from the ground up completely differently from any other civ. It is not consistent with any other civ, so what is really the point of making it conform to others just through its name alone? If anything, that could be considered even more confusing for anyone who isn't familiar with it. The name breaks the convention because the civ breaks the convention, I think that's fine, but just my opinion. And I think part of the point is that the devs can't know everything about how this will pan out, it's definitely very experimental. They're taking a risk, trying to create options both for long-time players and new ones. I can't say how it'll pan out overall, but I know I'm interested and will be playing the game
I'm pretty sure french with jeanne d'arc variant won't have any landmarks. Her level up are exactly designed like landmark choice are made. It's mean lvl up will be very central, i hope she can still help vills to xp if she wants play less agressiv or chinese and defensive civ would be a bit too hard to play against. If it's the case, Jeanne will have only one forum landmark to def (i suppose he will get more HP each level) or it's will be very hard to defend a 5.000 hp solo landmark all-in
Is it possible that she only gets the hand-cannon when you chose the bow path earlier? Or is she given a choice of two different hand-cannons? 😀 The description specifies that it happens "based on her weapon choice", so I still hope that you can have her on level 4 without the ridiculous weapon. I assume you can't answer this (yet), but still mentioning it just in case. Thanks for the informative videos!
I think this variant is very unique and a lot more intersting than the concept of "variant civs" first sounded to me. Personally I don't mind her Jean's abilities being unrealistic since monks are already in the game and most of the base building mechanics are extreme abstarctions to begin with. Also the whole name controversy is just exhausting at this point. To me this name could have been better but it's fine, no need to waste energy on it.
How many of the content creators had early access to this and didn't tell them how stupid it is? Are we being trolled? Is it April Fools? Did that say John Dark gets a frackin' cannon?
That’s definitely the bit I can’t wrap my head around. It’s cool that she starts as a villager and gradually works her way up to being a more and more powerful unit, but the canon is such an absurd escalation of that. It also looks ridiculous.
I think its because of Gameplay reasons.I'm 100% sure they tested the Sword and realized, with all the Unit blocking in the Game shes not fun to Micro anymore.
At first I was appalled by the thought of this civ and how it is history is shoehorned into the game, though the more videos I watch the more intrigued I become. Technically this is a suped up version on the Khan, which I thought was mostly flavour with medium impact. Looking forward to how this turns out, at least the devs are taking risks with Civ designs, which makes gameplay way more dynamic.
I don't think this is necessairly a bad idea, but i'm not sure if I like it. It is nice to expand the limits of aoe4, but the game is about advancing in ages and having ONE character ALWAYS present feels a bit too much for me. Seems a bit weird to me as well to "create" a "new" civ out of one already existing, when they could give us a real new one. There's plenty of civilitations around middle east to explore: persians, afghans, armeanian, etc.
It kind of looks like they're trying to create commander races from StarCraft co-op mode. It could work, but there doesn't need to be a hero unit, and the commander races are dramatically different. Personally I think Nova is the best, it feels exactly like playing like a spec ops commander with expensive and powerful but limited troops. Jeanne's spawn in ability feels kinda cheap, and kinda breaks the atmosphere.
To me, the variant civs are about experimental civ design; it starts with a gameplay idea, and then the devs look for a suitable historical counterpart. That's why they're called variant civs rather than just normal ones. Cuz in AoE4, at least, the normal civs take a TREMENDOUS amount of work to make: the art, music, models, mechanics, and research are massive undertakings. So I'm very happy that we're getting two fully fleshed-out regular civs with all the bells and whistles, plus a number of variants that are easier to make in terms of brand-new assets, but offer vastly different game experiences
@@Vesmir789 I mean, unless the varient civs have huge holes in their tech tree or something, you could just ignore Jeanne and play as regular French, at least from what I see. Having Jeanne also doesn't seem to fix any issues the french have, their vils already train faster, they already have great cav, the champions would be nice but you can't mass them. It seems like a Khan that you have to put more micro than it's worth. Not one single player gives a shit that Joan starts as a vil then becomes a soldier. Brokk and Eitri from Age of Mythology did that first and better. Aside from that, well, despite Age of Noob's efforts, she really just does look like a Khan for the French.
@misteral9045 Seems like a lot of assumptions in there tbh, we don't know that much about Jeanne's faction yet. We don't know what she loses compared to the French, or what civ bonuses she has. There's not much reason to think that Jeanne and her new units are the ONLY change compared to the standard French civ. If it was just "the French but you have Jeanne d'Arc," then yea, I'd be pretty disappointed by that. But from what we can already tell, it seems that her faction doesn't advance through "ages" like other civs, so I think it's safe to say that the changes are more substantial than just "France with a khan"
@@Vesmir789 Haha not really, Age of Noob made a direct mention of Jeanne being a french Khan. Jeanne will have no age up mechanics? Ok, so no tech upgrades, or they only unlock as Jeanne levels up? Good luck being stuck in second age because your opponent only fights Jeanne when they can kill her.
I believe I can't share specific details yet - but it's balanced like any other civ's start. i.e. every civ has a unique start (like starting with diff res, HRE Prelate, etc), so you get to start with Jeanne d'Arc when you play as the... Jeanne d'Arc. :)
This sounds really fantastic but might be hard to balance. If it's just France + new OP heroine then the added micro around a special unit you need to keep alive and a high-risk playstyle might be a fair tradeoff vs. normal French, but they said you'll be taking a penalty for the privilege of running Jeanne. I'm cautiously optimistic.
Strongly against hero units. Obviously, we will see how the balancing works but not a fan of this generally. Side note, does the faction lose the bonuses of the french or do you maintain all of Frances bonus with this additional unit. If it's the latter that would be incredible OP.
I was definitely uneasy about the name at first, but the announcement from the devs and the info page for Jeanne's faction did a great job at explaining the intent, I think. Now I'm fine with the name, it makes sense for what the faction is and it's very clear on what you're getting. Also, I don't think it needs to conform to the naming convention for the other civs cuz it DOESN'T conform to the other civs, it's drastically different. Aside from that, I love how the variant civs are presented as a way for the devs to try experimental civ designs. They are built from a bottom-up perspective of creating new gameplay experiences, and I think that brings a lot of potential to the AoE franchise. I never would have expected or suggested such a thing, but that's only because the franchise has only ever given us the same formula for years. I'm excited to see what the devs do when they don't have to build every new civ from scratch and can devote that time to developing really unique new systems and mechanics. I'm personally really excited to learn more about the Order of the Dragon. A low-unit-count army of elites sounds awesome to me
As a frenchman, I'm glad to learn about that variant civ. And gameplay wise, it's rather realisitic, the real Joan of Ark (as you english speaker says ;) begins her life as a little villager (a sheep herder as a matter of fact) and undertake a long journey to become a warrior and a general for the King Charles!
Joan d'arc has been born as a beautiful baby in Dark Age in 476 after death of last romanzo emperor and grew until she had a big heavy cannon during battle of Pavia in 1525......she survived bizantine empire by 100 years
Ok, this is about right for this variant. It's the French with a hero which objectively makes them a bit weaker overall because you now have to babysit Jeanne who is ironically the weak link, furthermore, I would wager that this civ loses a lot of power when Jeanne isn't on the battlefield which makes sense because that's the point of this variant, to protect Jeanne and have her lead the army to victory. I personally don't like babysitting a hero so I'll pass on this variant, however, thank you for the explanation, keep up the good work.
What I really want to know is what traits/boni does this civ lose compared to french? My fear is that, if it is "just french with a hero unit" then vanilla french doesn't get to see much play after the dlc hits. And this would really be bad gamedesign. The goal was more civs and not upgraded versions but the way aussie drongo talks about it in his video made it seem like this civ is just strictly better than french...
Age of Noob mentioned that Jeanne d'Arc lose some part of French mechanics, but they are not allowed to share this information with us yet. ruclips.net/video/i1jXLNGjjfU/видео.html&lc=UgwcOs5hyCu9KymOlG94AaABAg.9v75Pk8r7Jg9v7P0-2N1Id
I just hope they balance this i dont like the fact you sumon unit imagin raiding vills with that gona be OP. Well we need yet to see what is up to do before even talk about it.
Yeah. It's also not an original idea at all. Most RTS games I have played have quite a few hero units. WC3, Red Alert, Halo Wars.... I specifically like aoe4 for the giant army clashes with a realistic approach. I'm fine with minor hero units like the English king, but a whole civ focused around hero abilities and upgrades? Complete opposite of what I look for in aoe4.
Lovely video. I'll be curious to see how it goes to face this varient on the battlefield. While I don't necessarily enjoy playing as a hero unit type aspect (like in warcraft 3 or aoe3), I do enjoy going after them. So this will be fun to go against
Jeanne is one of the most peculiar figures in history. I wonder how much of her story is myth and how much was fact. This is an interesting way to return her to age of empires though
@@servantofsusa7838 the thing that boggles the mind is how on earth does a peasant girl talks her way into getting an army. On France in an era where a peasant was treated almost less than human
I would much rather get 2 new civs instead of these 4 hybrids that are inconsistent. I feel like the system we already have offers tons of different gameplay and paths, so maybe they could have just add extra landmark for each civ if they wanted to mix it up this badly. Byzantines and Japan are gonna be awesome for sure, cant say that for sure about the other 4 things.
I like they are experimenting. having an entire civilization with several experimental implementations might be too heavy handed in figuring out what works and what doesnt (and similarly focused player sentiment will be easier to identify) and their reasoning on their update explaining why the variants are just variants makes sense even if some might disagree ultimately I'd like to hope this will lead to some good stuff in the future
The regular civs take a massive amount of time and effort to make because the devs put so much thought and attention to detail in them. Every unit and building has a unique model for every civ, for every age, and many also get additional unique models based on various upgrades. Voice work changes over time for many civs, including whispers and shouts. Game mechanics are thoughtfully designed to fit each civ and then implemented, and many mechanics are completely bespoke for their one civ. If this expansion included more standard civs, it would take longer to release and have a higher price point, I guarantee it. The variant civs are easier to make in terms of brand-new assets but still offer new experiences and allow the devs to explore more experimental designs. I definitely welcome something new in the franchise, where all we've ever gotten is the same formula for civ design
To be honest, i find the idea behind this civ variant quite intriguing. However, personally i find, that Age of Empires is just the wrong game for something like this. I understand that they are proud of their concept. It's just that not every great idea fits with the overall narrative. Having this variant solely for the campaign would be much better, than having Jeanne D'arc compete against entire civilizations over the course of a couple of centuries. I'm very happy that they changed the name of "Sultan's army" to Ayyubid Dynasty. However, i find that the new name for the chinese variant is even worse than before. My main problem is really that they all appear in the standard battles. Having them in campaigns only would fit much better.
I am not sure, if balanced well it brings an entirely new and fresh play style to the competitive part of the game. it will be hit or miss, but I will definitely try this out, seems like a lot of fun to me
@@dennisbergkamp1553 will see how it plays out, Kings and Khan fit the civs as well, so cant comment before we played it, I am all for uniqueness and love to try out new things so I will stay positive : )
Being able to spawn units out of nowhere in the middle of the map is a terrible mechanic that I hope they change. I was really excited for this expansion, and I’m happy to see the devs making creative choices, but this alternate Civ seems like it will need to be changed a LOT.
@@ga21351 This is exactly what I thought lol, Btw not just Japan there are many others like Aztec, African, etc can train units. And addition to that as it is mention that Jeanne can respawn after she dies can be same as 'Ransom' ability in AoE3.
"When the Burning flames of Reddit scortches yee, there is always respite and healing to be found in the gates of Noob." -BookofNoob. Super informative and great video as always! I was personally apprehensive towards the Jeanna d'Arc Civ variant name, while I think Maid of Orleans would have sounded better due to the shortening (MoO) Regardless, it makes sense considering how this civ is designed and so focused around Jeanna d'Arc. I am looking very foreward to play this as it looks like a very interseting take on a civ design centered around a "hero" character. Just hope this dosn't become mainstay of more future variant civs (in a way slowly turning it into a hero game, kinda what happened to the TW series)
I would not mind Hero units in AoE IV tbh...like a Holy Roman Emperor for HRE...other types of Hero units for the other civs/variants...because you have the King of England, Jeanne d'Arc, and the Khan...so might as well try to incorporate a signature unit for the other civs...but that's just me. For the Hero Unit it would have to be something historically relevant as well in order for it to make sense.
Yeah. I would be fine with it being like English has the King, Japan gets the Shogun, Ottomans get a Sultan, etc... One very specific historical character as the ONLY unit in the game like this while everything else is disambiguous, seems completely out of place.
Great job, AoN! I love the concept of this variant. It keeps the game fresh and to your point it allows distinctive gameplay. It is simple, if you don't like that civ, play another one. This is great for Aoe4.
I’m wondering if you have to pay to Microsoft the right to use the Windows XP tour music on your videos @ageofnoob. Although your videos are great to watch! ❤
They should replace this Civ with Jerusalem. It's a crusader/chivalry order like the Order of the Dragon, it's a natural opponent to the Ayyubids, it's heavily influenced by French culture and it's a cohesive political entity (i.e. kingdom). Not sure what they're doing with Zhu Xi's legacy and I'm not a fan of it simply judging by the name but it would probably be better if they replaced it with the Jin as a variant of the Chinese and the existing Chinese civ becomes the Song Dynasty. The Order of the Dragon isn't bad but I would like it better if it were a cohesive political entity. As a variant to the Holy Roman Empire, the devs could introduce the Papacy/Papal States into the game? The Ayyubids are a great choice for an Abbasids variant!
Jeanne never carried anything else than her banner. She was even tried for carrying weapons by the English, whixh she strongly denied. ... now we have Jeanne with a gun.

Why for Villagers, who were peacefully living in their hamlets inheriting the profession of their fathers and spending their life in the small village they were born, instead of being created out of thin air from the Town Center every 20 seconds each, sent mindlessly gathering wood, completely ignoring an enemy knight killing them one after another until their king gives every one of them a direct personal order to run hide in the building that created them, in exchange for a fixed amount of stockpiled food gathered 400 years ago? Why for Knights, who were a noble highly privileged class of military and political elite inherited the prestigious title from their fathers and leading the armies of mobilized poorly armed peasants, instead of being mass produced out of thin air in stables for a fixed amount of stockpiled food and gold and sent killing more villagers gathering wood than they themselves cost, which is the main goal of every military conflict and life purpose of every soldier? Why the entire army of Archers, created out of thin air from archery ranges instead of being mobilized from the peasants, becomes battle hardened veterans without even fighting anyone in exchange for a fixed amount of stockpiled food and gold a minute after their entire civilisation suddenly and uniformly transcended into a new historical and cultural era, changing their language and architecture everywhere at the same time, all being the consequences of constructing an expensive building? The only reason you are completely ignoring this without even noticing while you are playing is because this is a commonly accepted norm existing for decades already, while your mind is focusing on a new thing just about to become a new addition to the game.
AoE4 in future going to have the Barbarossa HRE with Barbarossa as Hero Unit
It adds a new strategic layer to the game imo. Losing a hero could be a devastating loss to battle as is it would be historically. Troops losing morale and will to fight. In this case it would just be losing buffs instead of morale.
Indeed, civ pick rates will give Devs a good idea on what worked and what didn't. Very underrated point.
Slow clap...
it's like civ's Gandhi exept in civ it was a bug.
lol yeah
Ah yes the famous story of Jeanne Dark and her heavy cannon, I grew up on that story.
That could be an English variant with Richard the Lionheart, Crusader's Army
@@raulpetrascu2696 Except Richard was basically also French
@@CouchTomato87 I don't see the problem? We are talking about a game where you play as the English civ under Guillame of Normandie in the campaign
It just wasn't who Joan of Arc was, and never would've been.
when you said Jeanne’s Champion, one guy came to mind: Je m’appelle LA HIREEE
Looks like a inspiration from Heroes in Warcraft III, Age of Mythology and Age of Empires III (vanilla and expansions)
Hero gameplay is awesome in rts but hopefully they don't make the heros op
I'm afraid I can't share more details, but some French mechanics and bonuses are not available for Jeanne.
"That girl is a landmark"
I'm quite shure they will loose the production bonus for villagers so you have to play aggressive to not fall behind
Really interesting questions that I'm excited to see more about
They should have just made it that she burns at the stake at Age III or whenever she gets captured, for realism.
I like that she's basically going from villager to Paladin very cool!
The quality of these videos with the music and aoe4 background is so good. Excited about the new civs and variants!
Good to see you here again my friend :)
I always avoid watching other creator's videos on the Civ news to watch yours first (bc yours are so awesome to watch)
I especially agree with your conclusion. I'm hyped mainly because we get new game mechanics and likely completely different emphasis on micro gameplay. This will be a civ which plays distinctly different than the existing civs. Hope the devs keep their philosophy of continuously introducing new concepts to keep things fresh! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Agree with this fella. Always enjoy your content matey. Keep up the great work!
I appreciate that you are using Tourdion as background music.
Jeanne is cool but i hate heroes in rts games
Nice to see you active! Keep it up dear friend and best for the coming content. Your quality is unmatch and amazing. :3
Good to see you here again old friend. Hope all's been going well with you.
Jeanne, was only a village, the only "weapon" that she trudly use was a banner and a side arming sword.
I see they are going all out with the fantasy turning jeanne into a fighter.
this is a rts game, you want her to be a monk? Lol. Stupid comment, its a game.
@@ThatElephantSeal Fate/Grand Order players:
It's a shame that this wasn't a French themed crusader civ, but it's clear from the design that is not possible, short of a radical overhaul
I don't think this one is for me, but I'm happy they seem to be pushing the envelope on new Civs without completely warping the game for opponent.
*I fight for the Maid of Orleans*
New question. Do we think they might have confused Joan of Arc with the Knights of St. John and by the time they realized it they were too far in and just went with it?
I like video games, I don't mind if they use some creative freedom to make it more fun over being more "realistic" or "historic".
Love the insights. Anyone else notice the Champion's axe handles are a little crooked? Seems odd. But I would prefer it to the devs reusing assets.
Jeanne at level 4: 'So anyway, I started blasting'
A very interesting civilasation ! Are the variants getting camapigns too ?
If i got to make a variant i would have for sure it would be a Archduchy of Austria

Pikemen instead of spearmen
Handgunners instead of crossbowmen
And more focused on doppels than men at arms
With unique recruitment (maybe more expensive but faster) to represent the mercenary army
Your aoe4 videos are amazing, please keep the beautyful job!
This doesn’t feel like age anymore. I’d rather not have an entire civ based on a hero, and rather it be a selective style to play but even then this looks dumb. Probably not gonna play age 4 after this dlc, pretty bummed out ngl

I honestly would like civs being more unique like in aoe3 more than civs that are basically the same but thats just me
@@blecaobeing unique is good, AoE4 is sure bring out the uniqueness than AoE2.
If it's the case, Jeanne will have only one forum landmark to def (i suppose he will get more HP each level) or it's will be very hard to defend a 5.000 hp solo landmark all-in
Devs milking on Joan of Arc popularity from age of empires 2, eh? I like Joan of Arc, but as a civilization concept is kinda absurd
Why, if her lvl works as age up, that can be pretty unique and name this faction dont look that if, this is true ofc
Is it possible that she only gets the hand-cannon when you chose the bow path earlier? Or is she given a choice of two different hand-cannons? 😀
The description specifies that it happens "based on her weapon choice", so I still hope that you can have her on level 4 without the ridiculous weapon.
I assume you can't answer this (yet), but still mentioning it just in case. Thanks for the informative videos!
Handcannon started being widespread in france in 1338. Jeanne started her journey almost 100 years later in 1429. So they definitely had hand-cannons.
@@Marc-gj9vx Not in the slightest what I was talking about. I didn't mention once that they didn't exist. The point is that she is Jeanne d'Arc.

The RPG-fication of strategy games...
You're my guy, appreciate the overview.
so Jeanne got the big hand canon at lvl 4regardless if we chose her to be an archer or woman at arm earlier?
Heavy cannon is really weird. Why not a great sword or something like this...

Music from Civilization VI made this better than it actually is.
THE BLOOD ON LA HIRE'S SWORD IS ALMOST DRY
How does the game balance losing a villager when she converts into a unit?
I believe I can't share specific details yet - but it's balanced like any other civ's start. i.e. every civ has a unique start (like starting with diff res, HRE Prelate, etc), so you get to start with Jeanne d'Arc when you play as the... Jeanne d'Arc. :)
Being French, I wonder if they still have faster villager training though.
Makes sense, looking forward to more details! @@AgeofNoob
I dont think Jeanne darc will get the usual french bonus like the % at villager production
Noobs will love the added micro
A low-unit-count army of elites sounds awesome to me
When she dies, you can summon her again as Servant (Fate-series joke)
Does Jeanne D'arc still get the french civ bonuses and landmarks? Or do all the civ bonuses revolve around Jeanne?
It is already weird to hear Jeanne will weald a weapon. But yea, it is a better gameplay choice for an entire faction, not a campaign Hero unit.

Jeanne d'Arc existed in the French Campaign, so... noice.

Tf you mean realistic? She never killed any and has personally said she prefers her banner over the sword

I like they are experimenting. having an entire civilization with several experimental implementations might be too heavy handed in figuring out what works and what doesnt (and similarly focused player sentiment will be easier to identify) and their reasoning on their update explaining why the variants are just variants makes sense even if some might disagree
ultimately I'd like to hope this will lead to some good stuff in the future
Kinda wish she never became a combat unit. One of the most important parts of her story was that she never actually fought/killed anyone.

@@ga21351 This is exactly what I thought lol, Btw not just Japan there are many others like Aztec, African, etc can train units. And addition to that as it is mention that Jeanne can respawn after she dies can be same as 'Ransom' ability in AoE3.
Kremlin guards die of a heart attack
And even before that, Age of Mythology has Pharaohs of Set being able to train controlled animals from himself.

Super informative and great video as always!
I was personally apprehensive towards the Jeanna d'Arc Civ variant name, while I think Maid of Orleans would have sounded better due to the shortening (MoO)
Regardless, it makes sense considering how this civ is designed and so focused around Jeanna d'Arc.
I am looking very foreward to play this as it looks like a very interseting take on a civ design centered around a "hero" character.
Just hope this dosn't become mainstay of more future variant civs (in a way slowly turning it into a hero game, kinda what happened to the TW series)
Book of Noob sounds like a good read!
Everyone is going to just call her Joan 100%, there will / would be no acronyms shortening when it's an iconic character with 4 letters long name.
looks really cool, cant wait to see what they have come up with for the other civ variants.
Yes, heroes in RTS are awesome. It gives you something that buffs your army, but also something to protect.
Is there still a reason to play the French, or is Jeanne better in every category?
The Ayyubids are a great choice for an Abbasids variant!
so whats the downside? why would you play the inspired civ
Its amazing how good they did with design of variants and how bad they did with naming them and label them.
Jeanne never carried anything else than her banner. She was even tried for carrying weapons by the English, whixh she strongly denied. ... now we have Jeanne with a gun.
to me, feels like a bad intent to rewrite history
@@G3rm4nc1t0lol its just a game
No, it's a great intent to make a fun game, introduce fun new mechanics and strats.
@@olegdragora2557 this girl was burned alive for frivolous charges like being a woman and carrying and utilizing weapons. This feels wrong. And no, some liberty in a game is needed, but why for Jeanne.
@@bguns8486Why for Monks, who were a privileged society class performing rites in the religious buildings instead of stealing relics, carrying them into the battle, screaming "Wololooo!!" to mind control all enemy forces in the circle around them, and magically removing wounds of allied troops from the distance while they keep fighting, in the middle of the battlefield?
Why for Villagers, who were peacefully living in their hamlets inheriting the profession of their fathers and spending their life in the small village they were born, instead of being created out of thin air from the Town Center every 20 seconds each, sent mindlessly gathering wood, completely ignoring an enemy knight killing them one after another until their king gives every one of them a direct personal order to run hide in the building that created them, in exchange for a fixed amount of stockpiled food gathered 400 years ago? Or sent building a Keep in the middle of the enemy city in the center of the battle, forcing the enemy king to resign?
This is a natural part of the human psychology which makes us making very poor judgements when we don't keep it in mind and don't make a conscious effort to control it.
What was the first song used?
The ancient era French theme from Civ 6
Is this on xbox too?
Yes, the DLC will also come to Xbox.
