Having seen all renditions of Pride and Prejudice in English and read the book a zillion times, I love Colin Firth's portrayal of Mr. Darcy. His delivery of the role was the most true to Ms. Austen's; his display of love for Elizabeth was breathtaking.
I agree! I just watched the one with Colin Firth yesterday & he was so wonderful. Both actors did an outstanding job on their respective P & P's, I love both very much! But the one with Colin more showed Lizzy & Mr. Darcy falling in love I felt there was a bit too much sassy wit from Lizzy in the newer one, & in the BBC one Lizzy's mother screeched like a fisherman's wife, which however helped us to understand the other noble people's disdain or repugnance about the Bennett family. The newer one showed a much warmer & sweeter mother, I couldn't understand objections to their famy.
@@pattimorey7766 I haven't watched the BBC one, but in the newer one, when Mr Darcy says "it was the lack of propriety of your family, especially your mother" I think that says it all. Mrs. Bennett was certainly nosy, presumptuous and lacked any sort of social propriety. She may not have been screeching, but calling out Charlotte for being so plain as to not likely find a husband... that right there was enough for me to understand any disdain.
It might not be as readily available as the movie. But considering social media these days, and the fact that his role in Bridget Jones was an ironic tounge-in-cheek to his Mr.Darcy it should’ve come up at some point.
HELLO MS. HALL😃😃😃.. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍.. MATTHEW MACFADYEN IS MT FAVORITE MR. DARCY😃😃.. HE HELPS MR. BINGLEY.. WHEN HE IS WALKING TO ELIZABETH.. WHEN HE SAID, "I LOVE.. LOVE YOU."
I love them both! Colin's showed a tough strong resolute character, i Ioved that! And, Matthews' showed a poet's soul trapped by formality & convention, to me. So, I love them both equally!
I guess sir Colin's portrayal is focused on the image of Mr Darcy from Lizzy's subjective view, so in some way it seems closer to the novel which is also from her pov. But I do feel like from an objective view, Matthew's Mr Darcy seems more "real", he adds more dimension to the character that might've been there but not always clearly shown to Lizzy (at least not till the end). And he also convinces me more from the start that Mr Darcy is a man who Lizzy can eventually fall in love with. Colin's portrayal follows the novel closely, and sometimes he makes the viewer despise the character as much as Lizzy does. So it really is up to which one is more of your taste, but mine comes down to Matthew's tender portrayal.
Seen both, and the best was the Colin Firth version(1995). Mini series six hours( 1 hour episodes), most accurate version.Great cast. The other one,(2005) condensed version of the book, but seeing the other , could fill in the blanks, parts of Austen's book left out. The other version was a nice shorter version(2 hours), but not as good as the first one, in my opinion.

@@MYRIAMLATEUR it was not a movie, but a mini series on BBC, six hours in 2 hour segments, and then other channels with Colin Firth, my favorite version. The other one was alright, but condensed.
Hands down (oooh & I wish pants were too) Matthew Macfadyen's Darcy is the only one that truly captures a man who has been caught in his own class drama & then gone all in with heart & soul. He is absolutely gorgeous in his flawed way. 💜
Helen Fielding (Author book 'Briget Jones') imagined at Mark Darcy a copy of Mr Darcy Colin Firth. Funny that he played it then too. For me, Colin Firth is the epitome of the proud reserved Mr. Darcy❣️
The writer of Briget Jones admitted that her book is based on Jane Austens pride and prejudice. If you think about it there are many similarities within the storyline . The fact that Mark Darcy has the same name isn't a coincidence.

I fell in love with Mark Darcy. I melted seeing the p&p movie. Most handsome cast. The awkwardness in scenes. I can see the resemblance. Time for me to see the bbc series. 9:51

I'll be honest with you. I love Mark Darcy more that any incarnation of Mr. Darcy ever. I don't know, all that Mr. Darcy's change seems so forsed and ungenuine, that's why I don't believe him. Perhaps because he KEPT INSULTING HER again and again and again, while Mark only said it once and then when he confessed Mark acknowledged he was unforgivably rude. Also comparing to Mr. Darcy, Mark isn't that awkward. P.S. It would be so much more fun if we had Colin Firth vs. Colin Firth comparison here 🤭
Aside from the Darcy debate, I would love to have been Elizabeth Bennett in the 2005 version. Old battle axe has the gall to rudely awaken and startle my entire family just to pick a bone with me?!! When it could have waited until a civilized moment during the day?! Further, to heinously insult my entire family in my own back yard?! At this point, IDGAS what your rank, status, or bank account. I'm going to show you to your coach the southern way; hunched over and holding a handkerchief to your head.
It's no contest. Colin Firth's Darcy and the whole 1995 production are vastly superior. So many things are wrong with the 2005 movie. It starts with the Bennets looking like they live on a chicken farm rather than a 2,000 per annum, al beit poorly managed, estate, and gets worse from there. in the 1995 production Darcy, Elizabeth, Georgiana, and Lady Katherine don't actually fit their physical descriptions in the book, but their characterizations are so perfectly in sync with the book it doesn't matter. Playing Darcy is difficult because so much must be conveyed without words. In this Firth is perfect. MacFayden, not so much. And he resembles the the book's description of Darcy less than Firth. And btw, the fountain scene at the end of the movie is just plain stupid.
Well said! I think people like the new version are not familiar with the book Pride and prejudice or had not read it. So they really can't gauge the better performance of the two actors or which version is superior 🤔.
@@gloriakohler415 So, do you mean people who have read the book and watched both versions (1995 & 2005) but prefer the 2005 version do not exist? Shame on you.
The 2005 movie was a dumbed down version, of pride and prejudice. Loved Colin Firth's subtle, rapid eye blink, while Lizzy is tearing into him, during her rejection of his proposal. It was just brilliant! Not the wimpy, sad puppy Macfadyen reaction. Donald Sutherland as Mr Bennett? Uhm, no! Just no! PS Mark Darcy and Bridget Jones, awesome! 🥰🥰🥰
i am gutted that you didn't use the 1995 BBC series as a reference instead of the film. I would have loved to see the comparison in Firth's potrayal of Mr Darcy in Pride and perjudice and Bridget Jones. He truly is the best Mr Darcy.
Both of their declarations of love come with a healthy dose of horrible insults. 🤣🤣🤣
Yes, but Firth can do pompous and stuffy infinitely better than anyone else, and that is the very essence of Darcy.
Having seen all renditions of Pride and Prejudice in English and read the book a zillion times, I love Colin Firth's portrayal of Mr. Darcy. His delivery of the role was the most true to Ms. Austen's; his display of love for Elizabeth was breathtaking.
