Spoiler alert: Alicent (and Corlys) are the last survivors of the war. I genuinely see the writers showing Alicent dying, thinking of the good times with Rhaenyra, before all of this mess and imagining herself flying away with Rhaenyra on dragon's back.
I highly doubt she remembered Rhaenyra at the end. In the book, Alicent went completely insane after the war, hating the color green, inciting her granddaughter Jaehaera to slit the throat of Aegon III (Rhaenyra's son who became king at the end), and eventually dying believing her children were still alive (although she witnessed the complete destruction of her family and lineage).
this tragic relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent is surely what made me love the show even more. i hope to see more of them in season 2. i do believe Alicent will realize just how controlled and trapped she is and how things could have been different but, of course, it would be too late by then.
I don’t think Rhaenyra ever understood that Alicent had no choice in marrying Viserys, or in having her children. Whereas, she as the heir to the throne could have married anyone she wanted.
@@wolkevandenberghe5282Alicent was in no position to refuse her father. And I doubt she knew that Viserys would choose to marry her, which she certainly could not refuse.

@@queenxx1690 It's clear that Rhaenyra is the protagonist.., Also: what good sides does Aegon have in the books? He also went to child fighting rings. So in the show they actually made him look better. And him being a despicable human being actually goes along with the misogyny that clearly is a big theme of the book and therfore the show, Like Otto said, Rhaenyra could be a saint, he would always go against her because she's a woman whereas Aegon as a son could do nothing wrong and should still be considered the heir purely based on the fact that he is a man. Like he rapes the maids in the Red Keep, Alicent cleans up after him, knows that he's a horrible person and still tells him he's going to be king...
Damn I really thought they would be a thing. Just their chemistry is so damn cute. One is free minded and the other is responsible. "LET THEM EAT CAKE!"
The friendship change was an absolute improvement from the book UNTIL ep 8-10. By that point, Alicent should have went full Green and start politicking the rise of the Green Council and the Queen’s Party in contrast to the Princess’ Faction at court like in the books. They took away all her political genius from the book, gave it to Otto, and made her look indecisive and frankly stupid at being suprise Pikachu’d that the greens had been plotting for 6 years.
Judging by your detailed insight and analysis of her character arc I on other-hand think you might have been the actual writing genius behind episode 9
@@hasna7542it really made her come out as indecisive and easily manipulated tho. alicent made aegon stop talking to her nephews because she kept telling him he would be king and theyd try to kill the greens - and not many episodes later she appears in the green council shocked that otto was plotting to crown aegon as king. she also fought with rhaenyra on a daily basis, spread rumours about her and laenor to weaken rhaenyra's support in the court, refused to marry helaena to jace which could have stopped the growing tension between the two houses...she was ready to fight to keep team green's power, specially after aemond lost his eye. then suddenly there's that dinner scene, rhaenyra makes her a toast and they seem to rekindle? they were enemies for much more time they had been friends. both did unforgivable things to each other. yet alicent ends the dinner asking rhaenyra to return later and rhaenyra happily agrees. it made 0 sense!
@@umalguem.4918 those are character flaws and I like that about her, it makes her more interesting to me! and as for their rekindled friendship, it makes total sense to me. for one, Viserys was dying and it was partly for his sake. and when you loved someone deeply, especially during your formative years, you carry a soft spot for them despite everything they put you through. unfortunately it was too late for that and unlike them their children never shared a love with each other. I find that very human and tragic.
It was cute when they were young, but every semblance of amity should have been gone after Alicent tried to harm Rhaenyra's son and Aemond lost his eye.
Alicent actually was forced to wed the king, she's no privileged princess like rhaenyra to have have saying in it, rhaenyra should've known her friends better instead of victim blaming her.
It was alicent who was constantly blaming, questioning and judging her. She literally forgave her for even seducing her father behind her back. Don't be stupid on purpose please
Alicent didn't communicate with her about not wanting to marry Viserys. Rhaenyra learned about it in a Small Council meeting with every other lord that wasn't Ser Otto. So, Rhaenyra had no way of knowing how Alicent really felt about it, especially since she never uttered a word about it to Rhaenyra. So in her POV Alicent did it willingly. What reason did she have to believe otherwise? They were alone often enough, given that Alicent met with Viserys for months, and at no point was she able to tell Rhaenyra? Talk about friendship...

@@Lea-ke2rw rhaenyra blames alicent for the failings of the men around them all the time. rhaenyra abandoned alicent while she was being sexually abused and forced to bear children at a frighteningly young age because it was easier to be angry at alicent than at her father or the system in general. both girls have been groomed by the patriarchy to not question it. and alicent isn't envious of rhaenyra getting to sleep with men she actually likes (men who in fact were abusing rhaenyra regardless) she's envious because alicent has destroyed herself trying to be perfect while rhaenyra has done whatever she wants and in the end rhaenyra gets all the favour and acknowledgement and love from viserys anyway
One major issue I’ve had with the show is Alicent never shows any signs of reluctance in taking a position of power away from Rhaenyra even though they are supposed to be best friends.

For the people who are mad, here for you to get more mad, and for the people who love them like I do, here some quotes of the directors, showrunners and actors about them! (also there is much much more💞) quote: “despite everything that happened there is a deep connection and ultimately, you can’t erase the fact that you loved and cared for someone. It can get twisted, but I can’t be deleted.” -Clare Kilner, director of episode 9 quote: “There’s just a closeness between two young women that cannot be verbalized, especially in the world they live in. I don't think they fully understand the feelings; it’s just all-consuming love.” -Emily Carey, young Alicent quote: “There are layers and layers of repression; sexuality and lust are probably a prehistoric, sedimentary layer by now.” -Olivia Cooke, adult Alicent quote: "but ultimately the demise of their friendship is by choices made by men.” -Milly Alcock, young Rhaenyra quote: “If she gives in to [Otto’s terms], she can go home, and maybe even be loved, and maybe Alicent would take her back.” -Emma D’Arcy, adult Rhaenyra quote: “but [Rhaenyra] definitely yearns for the old physical intimacy that they shared.” -Emma D’Arcy, adult Rhaenyra quote: “I can definitely understand that it is hot watching complex female characters […] Like, that is hot. And is very different from, I suppose, more two-dimensional portrayals of female sexuality.” -Emma D'Arcy, adult Rhaenyra quote: “Stealing these loaded looks with someone that you fancy and that’s forbidden. That’s hot. It’s all hot.” -Olivia Cooke, adult Alicent quote: “They [have] this potential romantic entanglement from earlier on that has always been a big thing.” -Miguel Sapochnik, showrunner quote: “it’s a bit of a love story in a way, of these two women.” -Geeta Patel, director of episode 8 quote: “I saw the love and the romance of these two girls, which makes it all the more tragic” -Greg Yaitanes, director of episode 2 quote: “The underlying theme is that Rhaenyra is actually in love with Alicent, With Milly as young Rhaenyra, it was very much about seeing how she experiences this constant series of small rejections from Alicent.” -Miguel Sapochnik, showrunner quote: “This game they are locked in, it’s largely a nonverbal one, and it's bitter and silent and stony.” “We exist in a series of looks and chess pieces and hearsay and ravens.” -Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, adult Rhaenyra and Alicent
The funny thing is that most of what they say is not in the show (cut scenes) and does not make sense. And the interviews are different from the final result
You do realize that what they said isn't actually shown on screen? Like there was nothing that indicated that their love is indeed a romantic one. Or more than just a really deep trust into each other? Like that's the risk with TV or any media, the people responsible might actually see some things a certain way because they want it to be seen that way. But it's not actually verbalized or explicitely shown on screen. The people involved in making the art aren't actually seeing the finished product from the point of a viewer who has no idea what their intention is and might interpret it in a totally different way. Like, to me, Alicent and Rhaenyra have a deep, platonic friendship that's based on trust because they were able to tell each other everything. But the moment Alicent started seeing Viserys in secret that trust is no longer there=no longer a friendship because there's no trust anymore. So, to me, getting to episode 6 and hearing the actors talk about how they're still missing what they had and supposedly thinking they can get it back makes no sense. It's nostalgia at best because as children their lives were easier in general. And that's what their friendship represents to me: an easier time where nothing bad had happened yer. Like, Rhaenyra still had her mother and wasn't burdened with everything her father told her about Aegon's song and Alicent wasn't burdened with her supposed duty.
Lesson for women: pursue your non-ambitious little dreams that would make you happy. Do not do what men in your life want you to do no matter how big the prize is. A man is not seeing the world through your lenses. Doesn't matter if it's your father, brother or son. Do your own thing.
And the evolution is Alicent starting to harass Rhaenyra and her children, wanting to maim her son, almost cutting off her arm and then helping in the usurpation of her birthright LOL

@@wolkevandenberghe5282Alicent was in no position to refuse her father. And I doubt she knew that Viserys would choose to marry her, which she certainly could not refuse.

For the people who are mad, here for you to get more mad, and for the people who love them like I do, here some quotes of the directors, showrunners and actors about them! (also there is much much more💞)
quote: “despite everything that happened there is a deep connection and ultimately, you can’t erase the fact that you loved and cared for someone.
It can get twisted, but I can’t be deleted.”
-Clare Kilner, director of episode 9
quote: “There’s just a closeness between two young women that cannot be verbalized, especially in the world they live in.
I don't think they fully understand the feelings; it’s just all-consuming love.”
-Emily Carey, young Alicent
quote: “There are layers and layers of repression; sexuality and lust are probably a prehistoric, sedimentary layer by now.”
-Olivia Cooke, adult Alicent
quote: "but ultimately the demise of their friendship is by choices made by men.”
-Milly Alcock, young Rhaenyra
quote: “If she gives in to [Otto’s terms], she can go home, and maybe even be loved,
and maybe Alicent would take her back.”
-Emma D’Arcy, adult Rhaenyra
quote: “but [Rhaenyra] definitely yearns for the
old physical intimacy that they shared.”
-Emma D’Arcy, adult Rhaenyra
quote: “I can definitely understand that it is hot watching complex female characters […]
Like, that is hot.
And is very different from, I suppose, more two-dimensional portrayals of female sexuality.”
-Emma D'Arcy, adult Rhaenyra
quote: “Stealing these loaded looks with someone that you fancy and that’s forbidden.
That’s hot. It’s all hot.”
-Olivia Cooke, adult Alicent
quote: “They [have] this potential romantic entanglement from earlier on
that has always been a big thing.”
-Miguel Sapochnik, showrunner
quote: “it’s a bit of a love story in a way, of these two women.”
-Geeta Patel, director of episode 8
quote: “I saw the love and the romance of these two girls, which makes it all the more tragic”
-Greg Yaitanes, director of episode 2
quote: “The underlying theme is that Rhaenyra is actually in love with Alicent,
With Milly as young Rhaenyra, it was very much about seeing how she experiences this constant series of small rejections from Alicent.”
-Miguel Sapochnik, showrunner
quote: “This game they are locked in, it’s largely a nonverbal one, and it's bitter and silent and stony.”
“We exist in a series of looks and chess pieces and hearsay and ravens.”
-Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, adult Rhaenyra and Alicent
The funny thing is that most of what they say is not in the show (cut scenes) and does not make sense. And the interviews are different from the final result
Always trust rhaenicents and alicent fans to fill comment sections with no less than a 500 word essay.
