  • Jaws reef in Haiku Maui is also know locally as Pe'ahi and it is one of the most famous big wave surfing spots on earth! It was not surfed until 1975 but is now the location of yearly big wave contest. As a surfer and marine biologist I decided to go scuba dive the reef at Jaws with the You Rip surf team and see what the reef and marine life looked like under this famous wave. I am doing an underwater educational marine life series at famous surf spots in Hawaii, Tahiti, California, Indonesia and Fiji so I was excited to video at Jaws. The reef under this amazing surf break is just a pile of round car size rocks! The reef has very little shape to it and some of the giant rocks are the size of a school bus and they come within 15 feet of the surface which makes the inside bowl on the wave. Most of the coral has died at Jaws and we believe that has to do with nearby sewage injection wells. Enjoy the first ever reef tour at Jaws! I will do a full documentary movie about Jaws for a TV production that will include some world class surfing and interviews.
