Bleached Sea Anemones in Palau
We recently dove in Palau and documented very little coral bleaching which was good! I am a marine biologist and I like to see how much of the reef is bleached at every dive site we visit worldwide. What was a bit unusual in Palau is I shot video of a handful of bleach sea anemones which is very rare to see. The anemonefish in these bleached white anemones were very stressed and hopefully the anemones will soon regain algae in their tissue and revert back to their normal tan, red or purple colors. Anemones are just like corals as they have algae within their tissue that photosynthesizes and produces sugars the anemone feeds on. We really don't know at this time as to what caused the bleac...

BigEye Trevally School in Oahu
Просмотров 42Месяц назад
I was scuba diving at an underwater cliff outside of Hale'iwa boat harbor in Oahu and got surrounded by over 100 large Bigeye Trevally! The Hawaiian name for this fish is pake ulua and they are rarely seen by divers because they normally live out in the open ocean. The entire school of fish zoomed around quickly feeding on schools of smaller bait fish. After doing over 3,000 scuba dives in Hawa...
Lobster Behavior In La Jolla California
Просмотров 69Месяц назад
Most divers find it hard to catch live lobsters because they hide in cracks in the reef during the day and trying to grab one and pull it out is almost impossible. As a marine biologist I have studied lobster behavior for over 40 years and I have developed a way to cause the lobster to come out of their hiding place all on their own. Good lobster hiding places out on the reef are hard to find a...
Spanish dancer nudibranch swimming in Hawaii
Просмотров 822 месяца назад
The white margin Spanish dancer nudibranch is the largest sea slug of its kind in Hawaii growing over ten inches long. They are poisonous to eat so most predator fish leave them alone but if you lightly touch one they will flare out to look larger then they are. They have feather like gills on their back and they crawl around on the reef eating poisonous sponges. If you gently pick one up it wi...
Frogfish Sharks Cove Oahu
Просмотров 242 месяца назад
I finally found an adult frogfish on Oahu North Shore at Sharks Cove! I have looked for one for over ten years. This huge adult is the size of a volleyball and blends in perfectly to the color of the reef. It is just wild to watch it swim as it sucks in water in its mouth and then sends the water out of openings at the base of their back legs. This propels them forward while they use their fins...
Wainiha Reef and Velzyland Reef Destruction
Просмотров 543 месяца назад
In August 2024 I did a scuba dive at Wainiha Bay on Kauai north shore and shot a movie of the healthy giant old growth corals. I then went to Velzyland on Oahu north shore and shot a video of the outer reef that is almost 100 percent dead and destroyed. The purpose of the dives and comparison movie is to alert the Department of Aquatic Resources of the problem and try to figure out what is kill...
Pipeline Reef Dying 2024
Просмотров 683 месяца назад
Every summer I scuba dive and video the reef at Pipeline on Oahu North Shore to check out the health of the corals and marine life. A few days ago I dove the second reef at Pipeline at about 40 feet deep. This part of the reef usually has lots of beautiful three foot tall mound and lob corals. On this dive I was bummed to see that over 90% of the large corals had died! The reef looks like someo...
Remora Shark Suckers
Просмотров 955 месяцев назад
Remoras are a slender fish that grow to about three feet long and it has a suction cup on top of its head for attaching itself to large sharks and other big fish. The suction cup is a modified fin and the remora holds onto it host so it can feed on parasites and also eat small scraps of food released into the water when the shark feeds. Sometimes the remora looses its grip on a shark and must f...
Tiger And Lemon Shark Diving In The Bahamas
Просмотров 1255 месяцев назад
We did 40 scuba dives in South Florida and Tiger Beach in the Bahamas with dozens of large lemon sharks, bull sharks, reef sharks, nurse sharks and tiger sharks studying their behavior close up. The purpose of the dives was to do a movie about how the sharks react to divers who are feeding them or chumming the water and how the divers have learned to control the sharks behavior. Here is a rough...
Liberty Shipwreck Bali Scuba Diving
Просмотров 1068 месяцев назад
The Liberty shipwreck in Bali is one of the best scuba diving sites in the world. The Navy ship went down in WW2 and lies on the sand from 15 feet deep to 80 feet deep. It is just covered with colorful sponges, soft corals and nudibranchs. It is the only reef structure in the area so it attracts thousands of reef fish from beautiful angelfish and sweetlips all the way to large humphead parrotfi...
Hawaiian Seashells Live On The Reef
Просмотров 4298 месяцев назад
Many shell collectors see Hawaiian shells in shell shops or even a few on the beach but most people have never seen live shells out on the reef. This is the first ever movie showing live cowrie shells, trumpet shells, tun shells and more! It took me ten years to shoot this video at night and in deep water caves to document the lives of our well known shells and also to talk about their importan...
Vans Pipeline Woman's Surf Contest Final
Просмотров 8711 месяцев назад
This was the best woman's finals at Pipeline I have seen in the last 20 years! Ten to fifteen foot waves and the women surf it nowadays just as good as the men do. Perfect trade wind conditions and big gnarly barrels. Watch world champion Carissa Moore take on past Pipeline champion Moana Jones-Wong, Molly Picklum and young Erin Brooks. Erin is only 16 years old and has already won contest in B...
Worlds Guide To Hawaiian Reef
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.11 месяцев назад
First ever video field guide for identifying Hawaiian reef fish. Took ten years to film and over 1,000 scuba dives. This video was for sale for the last ten years but now I offer it for free to help support our school marine life educational program. See what all the fish look like that you see out snorkeling or diving and learn about their Hawaiian names. Marine Biologist Terry Lilley
Manatee Habitat Destruction In Jupiter Florida
Просмотров 23811 месяцев назад
Speeding boats and beach construction projects in Jupiter Florida are destroying the habitat for the threatened manatee and sea turtles. Boats are running into and killing the manatee and construction companies are building on beaches destroying the future nesting site for the sea turtles. These activities are in violation of the federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) but the Florida state govern...
Central Coast Kelp Forest

First every green dive movie! I shot this video about 20 years ago along the remote part of the California coastline. I did over 500 scuba dives off of my kayak along a 120 mile stretch of coastline from Big Surf to Santa Barbara County. This was the first time this part of the coast had been explored and the marine life had never before seen a scuba diver. Come along on this fascinating advent...

Thank you for making this video. I wonder how the reef is doing 10 years later now in 2024?
Thank you.
Grew up on the Banzai and spent lots of time exploring under the water at Vland late 80s to mid 90s. I get this vid is 10 years old, but has the coral health gotten better since then?
Great video! Thanks for filming and sharing this.
Hi I was just wondering, where can I find more information about the lava tubes and overall formation of Tunnels Beach. I would like to do a report but I am having a very hard time finding info
Beach pant under the wetsuit first time I see that in my life 😂😂😂😂🤦🏽♂️
Great video brother! Thanks for sharing and I would love to dive this spot one day.
Why is the water so murky ?
Nice. Depth (s)?

I saw one of these today on the east side of Kauai! Purple and everything, hiding in coral.
Such a good surf spot
Ohhhhh......you said "coral virus".....who would've thunk it
Wow surfed there winter of 68. Sorry about that spot turning mushy.
Nice footage! But you say "this big omilu I shot." LoL... this is a adolescent. They get way over a hundred pounds. I'm also a diver. Have dove all the third reef. Dove through a lava tube which was 70' at the top and 127' when you come out the bottom of the cave. There was a black ulua 7' long and had to be close to 200lbs. Please stop killing the babies. Kill roi if you want to shoot something so that the uluas can grow to full size.
this is a great cause and production
I got to go there once it was beautiful so sad there are problems.
the real story is how did you find a parking spot? the Hanalei locals like to put nails in tourists tires.
This is Tunnels.
Is it the farm land chemical 🤔
What is killing the coral? Is it waist from the hotel? 2020 covid...has the area healed 🙏
Amazing
Nah get the fuck off our island lmao. Go back home. This is crazy stupid.
Whose property is that with the kapu sign that's tearing up the wetlands?
Oh no, that poor honu!

Mahalo for all the work and documentation you do Terry~ My heart goes out to these amazing creatures and all People who love and live on beautiful Kaua’i, as I once did. So heartbreaking to see such devastation. I had to move from Kaua’i back to the mainland due to not being able to breathe there. I never had asthma in life, until I lived on Kaua’i. It was severe, especially when I was on the west side of the island where Monsanto reigns king. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss swimming with turtles and all the treasures of the Garden Isle. Thank you for fighting for her, Mama Kaua’i. A love affair I will never get over. Bless You & Alo)(A❣️
you are the intruder dude, that's the shark's house leave these creatures alone people are really the worst
Thanks for da upload rip in paradise A.I
I love the old school way of this video. Its going to be sad to see the 80's style of making video disappear as the don't know how younger gens just use the latest video editing software. Awesome old school feel to the vid makes me want to watch it again, and again.
NICE TERRY! Don't disclose that location! Good to see a colony thriving. Get out at night and watch them do the line dance...
i wanna go diving at tunnels beach, what should I do?
Flipping off the ocean. Ok tough kids. Ok.
Fuckin Haoles

WOW! Great video! Thx for sharing! The quality was superb!
❤️
awesome
High nutrient load is what is causing the demise of these corals. It sets up a cascade of issues, like bacterial infections and subsequent algae growth. High phosphates and nitrates prevent new coral growth. I tested the alkalinity of the north shore water, it was in the acceptable range, 7.4 dKH. I did not test the pH. The sediment in the water is outflow from agriculture and sewage runoff from septic systems in north shore housing. The south side corals are in better shape because of less runoff from agriculture and housing. Until nutrient and sediments are controlled this situation will get worse.
I know this video was a really long time ago but my husband and I are coming in January this year and would love a tour guide for snorkeling!!!
Magnificent .....
WOW THAT POOR THING !
Please connect with me I would like to discuss this much more. I know why we have another sand destroyer on the surf beaches of Oahu, beyond military destruction.
Another world and no space craft was necessary!
Good description of shark reaction to war games.
Where is the free floating Nickel coming from? Saw your post on facebook
