With the Raiders team in the 80’s John would have a defense and a running back with Marcus Allen. The Broncos wasted his talent in his prime and Dan Reeves was a conservative coach with John Elway. I’m a lifelong patriots fan and lived a mile from Sullivan stadium/ foxboro/ Gillette Stadium for almost 15 years. The Darell stingley play was awful and it’s hard to watch. Especially when all three of my sons have played and still play football. As coaches and parents no one ever wants to see our children get hurt. Whether it’s youth, high school, college or pro. It’s still someone’s child out there. We’re all out there trying to hit the other guy as hard as possible. But it’s never anyone’s intention to actually injure another guy to the level of permanent damage. Jack Tatum deserves to be in the hall of fame! For better or for worse. Jack Tatum’s impact on the game is legendary! His impact on the games is so legendary that we’re still talking about him 40+ years later! That’s hall of fame worthy!

  • @bradywhatley970
    @bradywhatley970 4 месяца назад +24

    Yes, Jack Tatum should be in the Hall of Fame.
    His hits were a weapon psychologically.
    The 1980's had a plethora of hard hitting DB's like Ronnie Lott, Kenny Easley, Joey Browner, and Steve Atwater.
    Tatum demonstrated how a DB could intimidate a passing attack and literally make an offensive coordinator remove certain WR routes from the gameplan.
    The explosion of hard hitting DB's in the late 70's and 80's can directly be traced to Jack Tatum's influence.

    What you have to understand is that the NFL was quite different from what it is today! Those guys played beyond hard. The hit on Stingley, although tragic was just how Jack Tatum played. Back then it was the motto… “If you catch it, I’m going to make you pay for it”. Once you decide to sign up for football, you take on that risk of possibly being seriously hurt. It’s unfortunate to what happened but yes, he should be in hall of fame.

    Jack Tatum was Definitely the Hardest Hitting player in professional football, truly a BADASS. He most Definitely should be in the Hall of Fame. I was once record shopping (LP's) in Berkeley, California. I spotted he and linebacker Rod Martin coming up the street. Wearing short sleeve polo and golf shirts, JT's forearms were extremely large and very prominent, intimidating would be an understatement. My date and I thought about crossing the street, before we got to their location, but I wanted to meet and say hello. He gave the firmest handshake that I have ever had, and I still remember it well. The most Gracious player that I have ever met, took the time to meet and greet, and put his autograph on my record store receipt. I believe that the NFL should induct him, posthumously. May he,Coach Madden, Mr.Stingley and those not mentioned here,RIP.

    It's not the hit on Stingley that's keeping Tatum out of the Hall of Fame, but his book "They Call Me Assassin," and what he said in it.

    Yup, he deserves to be in the hall.
    That was a clean football hit.
    Not his fault. Sucks for everybody.

    Although the tragic hit on Darryl Stingley gives voters a convenient excuse, having played for Al Davis' Raiders is why Tatum has not been honored by the Hall, an honor he earned with his play on the field. Like Raider greats who were not honored until after their passing (Snake, Cliff Branch), or years after becoming eligible (Ray Guy, Tim Brown, Ted Hendricks) Tatum paid the NFL's unspoken anti-Raiders bias that has blotted the HOF's sincerity for years. He, of course, belongs in that building with the rest of those honored as anyone who ever saw him play, or played against him, would surely attest.

    Yes! And I’m a Steelers fan. As a high school db/lb coach of 26 seasons and growing up and playing in an era of hits that actually echoed at times in stadiums, although I’m glad the game is much safer with less impactful hits now despite the size and strength of current players, Tatum was more than an ‘Assassin’. He was damn good as a coverage safety. The era had a lot of Tatum-like players.

    Different game, different time.
    One of all time greats then & now. Definitely deserving of Hall of Fame honors.
    Real tragedy what happened w/Darryl Stingley who was a true professional & solid guy.
    Had an uncle who was great friends w/John Madden, a real character, Great Coach & all round good guy.
