We've heard that sensitive electronics can be protected by placing them in the oven, creating a make-shift Faraday cage. Does anyone out there know if this really works? What would you do to protect your boat and selfs in case of a lightening strike at sea? Brian
I've already posted this elsewhere but my best idea for avoiding lightening strikes is to sail with another boat with a taller mast! : - ) Best if that other boat was a catamaran. Not because I don't like them, but stats show they are hit by lightening more often than ANY other kind of boat.
I will add that their must be a way to provide a completely separate grounding system for a boat's electrical system. Why can't the mast and metal rigging be separately grounded? Then I think, . . . all the electronics up on top of the mast, . . . kind of hard to isolate that from a lightening strike. : - ( But hey, install fuse-able links to all those cables leading down the mast and in a strike those would surely blow, saving the bulk of the electrical system(s). ? ? ?
We see lightning on the horizon, and the first thing we do is place all of our back-up equipment/electronics in the oven. Fingers crossed many of us never have to find out if it works.
The amount of effort this crew has put in over the years surpasses anything I've seen before. Literally click on any video and it's like a mini virtual vacation. For a guy from jersey who will prolly never step foot on a sailboat, these videos just give me a sense of hope in life. Maybe one day my path will cross with some cool people like y'all. A man can dream. Peace and love. Safe travels. :)
Yes Kazza...finish it all off with a triple lens lick. I loved this episode - full of really great sailing and that fella you met on the island was hilarious, what a deadly fisherman. I'm sorry you didn't get to dive the atoll I reckon there would have been some big critters there! Pascale
Dudes... dudettes... ya nailed it again! The videos, the action, the dialog, the chill tunes... outstanding! For my 70th, I’m going to sit around an Okie campfire, sip a few cold ones, binge on y’all and send my spirit to mingle with your spirits. Party by proxy!
Sitting here in my house, in Florida, as I was watching you guys going through the storm, as I too was going through a wicked thunder and lightening storm. Sound effects!!! Brian, your voice is so soothing no matter what you are experiencing. Great video Delos...Captain and crew.
@deloscrew!! So thoroughly enjoyed your latest adventure!! Such a highlight of my week!! Big Love to you all! My favorite part was the winch maintenance with the classical menuet... as in “Pardon me, but would you mind passing the bearing grease?” LOL!! Hope you’re all doing wonderfully in real time!! Blessings and best wishes, always!! ... and thank you again for making us all smile!
Again, been following y’all since you left in the beginning. A highlight of my week for years. Thanks so much. Sure wish the world could all adapt your philosophy about life and living. We would all benefit.
your comment on trying to best weather is spot on. As we teach submariners (for surface transits mostly), "If you allow weather to put you in extremis, you may be left with no options."
Your videos share so many different experiences, with top-notch cinematography, music and editing.. Whether on a passage, exploring a small town, diving, or doing the barbie on the beach, I never tire of them Thanks so much.
I like that you referenced the wind speed and directions as well as SOG. As as sailor it helps me to picture the conditions you are experiencing. Thanks for another great video!
Great vid you guys. Just went through a crazy lightning storm here in the Seattle, Wa. area. Retired now, but haven't seen a thunder and lightning storm like this in the last 40 years of working outside. Looking forward to the next video.
I love you guys! Thank you for sharing you lives with us. Watching you got me through the most difficult time in my life. Delos stories should be prescribed for anyone going through detox. Thanks for the inspiration to share my dreams! :-)
Couldn't agree more about the power of deserted areas. It's almost like they tell their story in a long forgotten language and we have to decipher the code to unlock the secrets.
Wow, wow, wow. I don't know what it was, but I LOVED this episode. It was just SO interesting and the photography was exceptional. Thank you all so much.
HAPPY to bump into Brian at the Southampton Boat Show today. Big fan for many years now. May get to see you all in Antigua later in the year. Good sailing
It was nice to see attention to basics of sailing in this video. I don't know if you all know but Sam Holmes has made quite a splash SOLO sailing his Ranger 23 just this summer from CA to HI on a Ranger 23.
another great video, a bit blury but good to see you all safe and sound. my heads been spinning last couple months wondering where delos and its episodes are heading.. you guys are the craze, we love you all. im hoping its not gonna end up like the beetles.
Thank you guys for the videos !! I am able to live vicariously through you .... It is only a dream that I could live like you guys ... maybe one day I will have the great honor of meeting y’all and maybe sail and dive for a day or so with you guys !! Again ... thank you for the fantastic videos !!
In a perfect situation you would have nice big copper straps that would go from mast to the water to give it an easy path away from interior to the electrolytic water ... I have seen boats that hook up a big braided strap with clamps to mast during storms ...my thirty years of building comm towers on towers that got hit consistently we put these big porcupine looking balls that were just bunches and bunches of stiff aluminum strands that just looked like a bush and it would dissipate charge prior to a strike and worked pretty good it stopped destroying thousands in electronics every storm...you could hear them working hissing and crackling getting rid of the pre strike charge build up
Brain, you looked like a sailing Buddha (legs crossed and at one with the ocean) love the videos! one day my life style will be nothing too worry about other than where my next passage is! You guys are a inspiration to us 9-5 kind of people! Happy sailing ⛵️
In 2016, about 10 boats were struck by sheet lightning in St. augustine. I had a dyna plate, bronze, bolted under the waterline for the SSB,and a lightning arrester on top of the mast. I was lucky , I lost a few transistors when the lightning entered on the negative side of some of the instruments. Most of the other sailboats lost around $5-$15000 worth of equipment. Love your show :)
Liked the fact that you have so much respect for nature that did not push the dive at the place you first selected. Sometimes I feel some sailors get to overconfident and put themselves at risk. Good on Bryan for making the call and looking after his ship and crew. 13 knots! What's your hull speed? Did you not experience some oscillation at that speed? Do you have a rudder that is oversized for the boat? I know a competition rudder helps when going well past hull speed. Do whatever it takes not to broach. Great video. Impressive winch repair. Blue got greasy but she don't care. She's a real adventurist! Once again, outstanding editing and score.
Another great (normal) video and it just struck me that you don't have a canvas cover for Maggie. Have you thought about making one for her, not just to keep the salt and water off of whatever you might store in her hull, but to protect the inflatable gunwales from the sun's damaging rays while you're on passage?
You know what...... i have been watching for a while......that was one great VID. Trust me it had all the parts, good cut shots, b-roll, sailing ! , adventure walk, mechanical, sails, fyi's. Way to go! Thanks
Listen to the music sings sweet songs to rock my soul. Great choice of music. After a busy work week watching this video really set my mind at ease, thanx guys.
Blue is definitely gaining her Salty Wings!!, I hope she gets to experience the Indian Ocean which will give her the True Salty Sailor Tag that Brian , Kaz and Brady have?. She would be blown away!!. Much Love and Light Delos!!!
@@suzyrottencrotch5132 Whoa there Suzy, easy does it. I have the most respect for all people. Maybe the references listed above are not familiar, but please do insinuate. :)
Thanks again guys, great video, The only bad weather sailing I have done was in a 37 foot Black Watch on the Chesapeake with the high wind flags out. In 6 hours we only saw one other vessel, a Coast Guard cutter. Buried the rails all day. Magnificent!!
Once again Brain and crew have out done themselves and every other sailing show.. I wish I could join your crew someday, since Brother Brady can perform a Wedding at sea.maybe he can also say a few word over me when they lower my body into the deep to meet Davy Jones.. A burial at sea.. Thanx again for sharing your lives and amazing adventures.. Bob Barrett.. (Aka. Dugro )
I love watching the development of the relationship between Brian and Alex over the last (is it almost 2 years now?. Blue is the younger brother Brian never had (with all due respect to Brady and Brett.) Thank you for being good humans. You make the world a better place by sharing not just your adventure, but yourselves. Thank you.
Hello guys! All right? My wife and I love your videos! We thank God that you are good! The storm, the nature of God is beautiful, sometimes it scares us, because we are human, it is normal to be afraid! We love it too, when you fish with reel sticks! Grateful for your attention! We've heard that sensitive electronics can be protected by placing them in the oven, creating a make-shift Faraday cage. Does anyone out there know if this really works? What would you do to protect your boat and selfs in case of a lightening strike at sea? Brian
Yes, especially a microwave oven as that has a mesh screen in the door. but any metal enclosure should work.
I've already posted this elsewhere but my best idea for avoiding lightening strikes is to sail with another boat with a taller mast! : - ) Best if that other boat was a catamaran. Not because I don't like them, but stats show they are hit by lightening more often than ANY other kind of boat.

Yes, but It has to be a microwave oven and connected to ground.

Classic Delos, some diy, “family” only, some navigational theory, blue water... and some classical music thrown in!

Stunning episode. Start to finish.
It's amazing how the quality of your videos continues to improve and mature.
Delos just keeps getting better and better. Thanks for having us along!
Whoever picked the music for this episode absolutely killed it!
a little soft bluegrass mountain music for the ocean yup
Agree! There are some mighty fine young americana/roots musicians out there pushing the envelope with acoustic instruments!
Missing the standard opening music?

Pre-squall, how fun is that? A burst of cheerful life. Danger lurks everywhere now
Ive really been enjoying these episodes that brian has been editing.
I'm just glad none of the warm squishy parts of the boat were undamaged!

Awesome music on this one guys!
the music was top knotch
Great video as usual!!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!
One of your best videos. You could really feel the power of the sails and wind. Great ear candy too.
After a few years of denial, I am officially addicted to your videos. Living the dream.
Great sail boat big has enough space nice boat
That violin winch cleaning music was choice 👌 thought I was watching "master and commander" for a second
Haha! That was one of the favourites in the Delos arsenal of classic films which we watched when we first got on the boat

Nothing better than watching an electrical storm at sea, sometimes scary, always loud, but mostly one heck of a ride.
