With all the recent nastiness between RUclips comic book pundits, you guys are always a breath of fresh air. You're having fun, collecting for the right reasons, and are cool. Thanks for the videos.
They mention comic shop in Puyallup WA, I grew up there, where Todd Mcfarlane brother-in-law ran a shop called Spiders Web. They use to have signed Spiderman books for like $20 bucks when his series came out in the 90's. I was just a kid, and new to comics, and never bought any because I could still get 10+ different books for that same money back then. The store went outa business a long time ago..... funny to hear shout out on youtube that brings back so many memories
I got into comics 3 years ago, absolutely fell in love with them, I have about 1200 books, 100 slaps, But I started ASM vol 1, proud to say I have 30 out of the first 100, I’ll get another 30/40 next year
My first comic experience came from my mother bringing home 1960’s bagged comics from the grocery store! Wishing to move vintage comics? You have to be creative! People who own slabs, should try selling them at coin and stamp shows! If you own an expensive comic collection, perhaps sell them through an auction! I unloaded all of my comics years ago and replaced my favourite titles in omnibus form! Good luck!
You two are really interesting. Born in 79, my first comic exposure mid to late 80’s was free phantom’s in showbags. One day I bought a Spider-Man, Batman, Thor - had no idea about collecting. It wasn’t until 1990 we found an actual comic book shop that my brother and I had our minds blown. The books we got excited over: Xmen, Xforce, anything with mutants and powers. I never did the horror vintage thing - it’s really only this year I’ve seen lots of RUclipsr’s who adore it because, they were 60-70’s kids. Makes such a difference what you grow up with that shapes your collecting. I love to read my comics and love to get full runs. I have a full run of wolverine - lots of Xmen - almost a full run of uncanny Xmen from 108-544. I collect to read and enjoy, if they go up in value it’s like ‘well that’s nice’ I don’t care really, I’m handing them down to my kids. Helps me not see them as an investment strategy but as hobby.
I know a guy who's been sitting on a raw Showcase #4 since the 90's. It's probably in the Very Fine range. He has no desire to sell it. He has the same attitude a lot of us collectors have: "If I sell it, I'll never find another copy".
Excited for the new video, always enjoy your takes/talks on the hobby. Even more excited for the Whatnot show, the Instagram shows are a bit intimidating to jump into for me. Hope it goes well and we see more content soon.
I know you're old, bro, because you remember that super-campy Flash Gordon movie. I actually liked it!! Which also means I'm old too. :) I heard you mention Puyallup. Hopefully you'll have a table or visit again. That's the show that I look forward to most.
Another thing to consider for American books produced before 1941 is families donated A LOT of books and newspapers to the armed services paper drives.
Great stuff. I have all the Bronze Age books you showed and am a HUGE Kamandi fan . Also have a few of the DC Super Pacs but can’t bring myself to open any of them , mostly because I have all the books in single form lol Thanks for sharing 😊
You guys rock Dave and Rachel! A very entertaining and informative video -- thank you for posting. At the end you asked for questions, so I have wondered this week, are you guess surviving the atmospheric river and bomb cyclone? Wishing you well and happy to see you both 😊
I recently went to Grit City Comic Show in Tacoma and one of the dealers brought out a raw Showcase #4 to show me. We may have seen the same book. 😂 It looked VERY nice.
This question is for anyone that has the time to give your two cents: what is a good method for organizing your collection? I’m new to collecting but I’m quickly realizing that keeping track of what I have is going to become impossible if I don’t start some kind of spreadsheet. I’ve seen apps for comic collections but I’m also collecting magazines. Anyway just putting this question out there hoping to hear from someone who has been through this newbie problem.
As for the Spidey Super Stories , was always a fan and had the chance to buy a full run or raw @ 9.4 or above back in the early days of ebay . I got out bid by a guy from the USA as I had to factor in P&P costs to England , but think they went for a total of $500 which was no small potatoes 25 years ago given the exchange rate . Never seen a collection come anywhere close to that since.
Great stuff. The two of you consistently provide the best and most balanced view of comic collecting on YTube. One observation as to whether someone should "invest" in comics.... Some fans have convinced themselves that comics can be an investment - and that's fine, but some of these folks are non-homeowners, with no retirement savings, who carry credit card balances, who don't have a 6-month emergency fund, etc. Assuming some comics really are valid investments (and that's open for debate) the only way anyone should frame comic purchases as investments is to first have their house of cards in order. Meaning, they shouldn't have a lot of debt, they should have excess monthly income and a rainy day fund (paying 4%) etc. Buying comics with credit cards and carrying a balance isn't good financial planning, but if it's done on a small scale (e.g., from dollar bins) is no worse than using credit cards and carrying balances for Starbucks - at least comics are an entertainment and a hobby, like movies, or attending sporting events. But anyone who thinks that they're "investing" by buying hundreds or thousands of dollars of comics at 25% credit card rates is making very bad financial choices.
1972. I was born then I remember seeing stuff like this. Wow nice pick up bro. Nice pick up, detective for the pistol. I agree I totally agree anytime Batman has a gun that shoots bullets.🤜🤛 well done, bro!!!!!
So questions: 1. What is the brand of the new white eraser you received from a friend? 2. Would you please do another updated set of clean/press videos? 3. Are you open to doing a long-form interview/conversation about comics, collecting and the industry as a whole?
How about the market crash of 1996-97 when marvel went bankrupt. I worked for galactic heroes in Dunedin Florida back in 1993 and the breaking of Batman's back had just come out. The lines on new comic day were around the block. My boss had a feeling there was going to be a crash and sold the store right before it happened. Wonderwater bought the store and closed it down a year later
I bought a couple boxes of comics mixed early bronze and silver age from a person who bought from wearhouse cleanings and managed to get a Wally Wood comic from late 1960's issued for PX sales only but was pulled. Took a look and found a story in the back with a horse named Agnew so knew what happened. only 1800 printed.
I've bought boxes of newer comics for $1 or less .People are tired of so many variety covers that may or may not be worth something. i 'd rather collect bronze and back in decent shape.
I bought a HoS 92 in a CGC 9.2 in May of 2023 off of eBay. I paid (in total, w/state tax) $9,200. I am NOT rich and that book took everything I had, but for me- the biggest Wrightson fan on earth- I HAD to have THAT BOOK in a 9.2, because NM- is my sweet spot and that was my ULTIMATE BOOK TO HAVE. Within months that book, that I "bought" for $8,500, was selling for $6,500. If I sold that book at auction today I'd be LUCKY (after eBay/Heritage/Comic Link/etc. fees) to get 6 grand in my pocket, meaning that within MONTHS what I thought was an unimpeachable classic that would at LEAST not go DOWN has me out 1/3rd of my buy-in, and who knows how much more it'll go down from here. I figured that at the LEAST it would retain its value but nope: even the mother of all Bronze Age books tanked on me- and for reasons I may never know.
I haven't paid attention to to prices for that book, but it's relatively easy to find until you get into the nosebleed grades. I just buy what I like with no expectation of getting my money back. It is very difficult to break even in this hobby if you target books on your want list. The guys who make money on books are the ones who throw lowball bids at many, many books and see which ones stick.
Oh, and welcome back. I've missed your weekly videos. Here's a question: is there a way to buy from you that doesn't involve claim sales? For example, could someone contact you with a list of wants and buy directly that way? Thanks.
That's not really true. Most books were aimed at adults. Take a look at the ads in the romance books. Robin was introduced to bring in younger readers.
Always excited to see new vids from you kids. I learn so much as a novice reseller. As someone who has restrained from submitting to CGC for a bit of time now, for all the reasons, I'm starting to really lean more CBCS. I feel they are a better product with more traditionally consistent grading. Do you see a moment when their slabs finally start demanding the same market value as CGC?
Hey guys, great video, how do you determine the value of a book for submission? Do you go grade price minus 30% or do you go off last sale graded at the grade you think it would get? Also are you seeing an increase in the market for foreign books? Cheers Logan New Zealand
You can never go wrong with buying a book at cover price. I would never spend $100 on a book in the hopes it goes up to $200 unless I knew for sure there was a movie or TV show involved. But with modern books like Absolute Batman or Ultimate Spiderman, you can buy these books at cover price! A great example is Ultimate Wolverine which comes out in January, you have a chance to buy a book you knonw will be worth 8-10 times what you paid for! Books like that is what you should be buying.
Gee I have missed you guys. I really enjoyed your show today. Since you asked for questions, I will give you a couple. I have a House of Mystery 217 in a 9.8 universal and a Conan the B. #1 in a 9.2 Conserved grade ( coveres lightened but look great). what do you think they would bring at, say a Collectors Comics auction? Is that the kind of question you were looking for?
I like the Ka-Zar character too and its always fun to hear how different people pronounce his name. On the very first page of X-Men 10 it says pronounced “KAY-sar” but of course not everyone has read that and it evolved its own variety of pronunciations, all of which are cool
The brave and the bold issue was Adams. The house of mystery 174 isn’t Adam’s but a lot of people have mistaken it as a Neal adams cover. Not to mention the brave and the bold book looks like a different angle of the house of mystery 174!
The best recollection at DC for House of Mystery 174's cover was Carmine Infantino did the layout, Joe Orlando did the pencils and George Roussos inked it.
So I’ve been collecting 9.2-9.8 WP gold key books George Wilson covers, I’ve noticed those books are really starting to go up in price. How do you feel about the Gold Key collectors, do we have many new collectors jumping in on these causing the price to really sky rocket, you feel there’s been a switch in who’s collecting or they’re just becoming more and more rare in grade?
Hopefully someday there will be a comic book RUclips channel that focuses on Gold Key/Dell/Harvey/Archie/Independent comics. There seem to be hundreds of channels that focus on Marvel/DC superhero books, thats where the speculation game is played. Gold Key comics has recently attempted to re-enter the comic book community but hardly any RUclipsrs seemed to care.
@ I agree, some great artwork, decent stories all around really cool era in comics! I have a bunch of Magnus really high grade books and the Space Family books too, just a couple titles that are really good.
@ I really don’t collect funny animal comics from GK, Mighty Samson is a good one, the Boris Karloff series is great. Just a lot of diversity between genres with GK.
Oh, and love that Kamandi 1. I know I’m in the minority but I love that title! Probably because I bought issue 1 off the newsstand when I was a kid. Those always hold a special place in the heart. I bought at least three #1s during that period, Kamandi, Doc Savage and Conan. Only the Conan is worth any money but I love them all equally 😂
Actually, the Kamandi is going for about $1300 in 9.8. That’s definitely something. My opinion is that vintage keys in the silver age to current still have room to drop.
Dave's comment on CGC, "I've been waiting to submit to CGC, but..." hit hard. I finally forced myself to get some books graded just in time for their latest controversy to hit. Proud I did it, finally, but debating if I just sell the raw books or get them graded first. :|
Hi Guys , Great vid , Would love to hear your experiences of whatnot , thought many times of trying it but being in the UK , and that Ebay have waived all their fees , just not sure about it . However individually listing 30000 comics is so very daunting.
@@deerichardz Based in the UK the no selling fees has made a huge difference. before I would have said only if you want to get rid of a lot of stock without much fuss and are not overly concerned with price. Now that I keep 100% of the final value sale I would say yes. Its still a buyers market but in an area that has very few LCS & very small Comicons, ebay is a simple to use, wide reaching tool .
@@deerichardz I do now as of the 15th October 2024 . Ebay dropped all sellers fees for most items . Motor Vehicles are not included in this . This is the UK but I assumed it was across the company .
@@richardwaddington2038 I checked and double checked. The listing fees have been waived, but the final sale still gets dinged. I think I misunderstood your comment ^^
excellent channel with great information. But I think, as an investor, one should buy when the market is low and sell when it's high or just keep them:-)
It amazes me that people buy the new comic book day dross. Either it is fomo or a case of a lot of disposable income. That money could go towards a grail.
I must ask this question in the next coming decades is anyone going to want any book from the golden era, I mean are your kids really gonna want these golden era books? I really feel like outside of marvel and some DC books from the silver age most of these other books aren’t gonna be worth anything.
I know you're asking the hosts and not me, but for what it's worth: in my view, the Golden Age horror comics will remain desirable. Our culture (especially comic book culture) loves darkness and violence, so I can see all those gruesome covers attracting buyers decades from now.
People are rediscovering Golden Age books. They've never seen anything like them. Romance comics. Good girl art comics. Archie comics. War comics. Horror comics. Especially the folks who are bored of superhero comics.
I stopped reading comics when they went up to 15 cents - too expensive. I had a box of comics that my brother and I and our friends literally read the covers off. I find it very amusing that people see these as investments.
Did you guys spell Collectibles wrong on purpose? Changing subjects though, I was going to say you're better off collecting vintage pipe tobacco. Tins from the 2000's to the 70's are wildly sought after, and then you bust out The Hobbit. So cool!
I completely agree with what cgc said to me in email graded book 9.8 value 300. By cgc and it got same grade by pgx cbcs and egs it should be value same as cgc., Cgc said people buy books not cases and company name logo on case make value of books it’s books them selfs make books valuable as emgo316 says options are good there is no right and wrong go with company you like feel comfortable with grade books I had no problem using pgx, cgc I refuse to use cgc high prices take to long months to year get books back , cbcs have no experience with them people have options send books get graded there is no right and wrong those books should be valued same regardless who graded them based on condition and grade nothing else, Ever since cgc had there problems cgc has been little generous with grading I saw cgc grading book that got 9.8 you can clearly see big bent on corner that bent will bring it down less 9.8 cgc grade that book 9.8 on RUclips
@futurepastvintagecollectables All good. I'm still curious about the definitive 'no' to your opening question. I'll check back in the future. Thanks for making content. Your years of experience is valuable.
i have thousands of comics and records i want to sell and all i've been hearing for the last six months is crash this and crash that. I'm starting to feel like Charlie Brown...
The pac’s have never been worth as much as the individual books. If you sell comics you’ll make more money opening them, and pressing them. I have a pak even older than the one he opened, it has 12 centers. I haven’t opened it but I’m pretty sure the individual books are worth more than the pak is.
It would be the time if in fact prices were dropping but in fact they are not on EBay. They are in fact overpriced and mostly not selling. People have to check a price guide before bidding or buying as the unscrupulous sellers are out in force on EBay. One seller is selling facsimile covers. Those are covers with no book in between, just a cover I was duped by the word facsimile. Another seller calls himself Variant in his seller name, I thought I was buying a variant, it wasn’t . Then there is the guy selling facsimile digital copies. Bought 5 of those for a loss of 10 bucks. What is a facsimile digital copy? Yet another seller was selling something but I could not understand what.
@@stephanholder6240 In every collectables market, some items remain desirable even as the general market continues to slide. This even happens with brown furniture, china, etc. Even so, it IS surprising how much the value of AF 15 has dropped recently.

@@Bathoundcomics Those were the best GK books, if you're not into funny animal comics.
@ I really don’t collect funny animal comics from GK, Mighty Samson is a good one, the Boris Karloff series is great. Just a lot of diversity between genres with GK.
Loved this thank you
So the title was is now the time to buy vintage. You’re saying no but you only gave examples of comics that went up nicely. I’m a little confused.
What do you use for your clear slab pictures? A flatbed scanner?
we have an industrial grade Plustek scanner! it's great
Julie Bell Boris frazetta amongst the few awesome artists
Dave's comment on CGC, "I've been waiting to submit to CGC, but..." hit hard. I finally forced myself to get some books graded just in time for their latest controversy to hit. Proud I did it, finally, but debating if I just sell the raw books or get them graded first. :|
We used to get them at Ben Franklin's kreskies Kmart wherever we could get them
The warnings were all there 10 years ago with the speculators who manipulated the market.
Hi Guys , Great vid , Would love to hear your experiences of whatnot , thought many times of trying it but being in the UK , and that Ebay have waived all their fees , just not sure about it . However individually listing 30000 comics is so very daunting.
Is it worth it to sell on eBay nowadays?
@@deerichardz Based in the UK the no selling fees has made a huge difference. before I would have said only if you want to get rid of a lot of stock without much fuss and are not overly concerned with price. Now that I keep 100% of the final value sale I would say yes. Its still a buyers market but in an area that has very few LCS & very small Comicons, ebay is a simple to use, wide reaching tool .
@@richardwaddington2038 You get to keep one hundred percent of the final value of your sales??
@@deerichardz I do now as of the 15th October 2024 . Ebay dropped all sellers fees for most items . Motor Vehicles are not included in this . This is the UK but I assumed it was across the company .
@@richardwaddington2038 I checked and double checked. The listing fees have been waived, but the final sale still gets dinged. I think I misunderstood your comment ^^
Guess it's a buyers market, not liking the steep price dip some of my comics have taken 😮
excellent channel with great information. But I think, as an investor, one should buy when the market is low and sell when it's high or just keep them:-)
Great video
Do you think they will ever make a Kamandi movie?
Man, I sure hope so!
With kids not reading comics anymore who is to know in 10 years as some of us old guy age out lol there maybe no one to want out old books anymore
Claim that FF 86 😉
I slabbed my amazing spiderman 700 came back a 9.0 just tp authenticate the signature even though I personally met him and had him sign it
I stopped reading comics when they went up to 15 cents - too expensive. I had a box of comics that my brother and I and our friends literally read the covers off. I find it very amusing that people see these as investments.
Because they are investments. Anyone saying differently doesn't know comic books. You absolutely can make money.
@@jfranklins Yes, but not really good investments, as this channel often points out.
@@TT-fq7pl That's why you should only buy stuff you like.
By cgc and it got same grade by pgx cbcs and egs it should be value same as cgc.,
Cgc said people buy books not cases and company name logo on case make value of books it’s books them selfs make books valuable as emgo316 says options are good there is no right and wrong go with company you like feel comfortable with grade books I had no problem using pgx, cgc I refuse to use cgc high prices take to long months to year get books back , cbcs have no experience with them people have options send books get graded there is no right and wrong those books should be valued same regardless who graded them based on condition and grade nothing else,
Ever since cgc had there problems cgc has been little generous with grading I saw cgc grading book that got 9.8 you can clearly see big bent on corner that bent will bring it down less 9.8 cgc grade that book 9.8 on RUclips
Silver to modern not scarce too many copies floating the market.
Would've loved if you stuck to the point. Opening talking point was never flushed out.
It was an editing issue. I had more but we had to cut it due to something wrong with the video.
Feel free to contact me and Mabye I can help you evaluate your collection for current value. My email is in the description.

Wow!❤
Those super pacs are listed by number to show the contents. It’s not a mystery. Kind of silly to open a pack that’s been sealed for over 50 years….
The pac’s have never been worth as much as the individual books. If you sell comics you’ll make more money opening them, and pressing them. I have a pak even older than the one he opened, it has 12 centers. I haven’t opened it but I’m pretty sure the individual books are worth more than the pak is.
@ that’s ridiculous.
@@LeadPaint1 how so? I'm speaking from experience.
❤❤❤
She got the bull ring. You know what that means fellas. Don't touch it, respect.
Comic books are in a permanent downturn. The young folk nowadays is into manga and sports cards, not comic books.
Permanent downturn? Huh 🤔. I Iook forward to buying that amazing fantasy 15 for a dollar someday😊😊
@@stephanholder6240 In every collectables market, some items remain desirable even as the general market continues to slide. This even happens with brown furniture, china, etc. Even so, it IS surprising how much the value of AF 15 has dropped recently.
I saw a video from a comic store owner who said have his sales were manga.
Isn't manga just a Japanese comic book?
