Love the positivity you bring on GL. Quick tip on draw attack though: you can press shell when you're in the animation for lunging upthrust and it will cancel the melee hit with a shelling, yet still carrying the few forward steps of the lunging upthrust. This is super useful for shelling-heavy playstyle (and shelling-ONLY playstyle) since the best GLs for it will likely have high raw but bad sharpness in turn. Draw-to-shell basically eliminates the risk of bouncing off when you're doing your draw attack, especially against monsters with a lot of tough hitzones. This capitalises even more of GLs advantage against weakspots that are normally hard to access.

Kinda a shame that PC controls for gunlance are slightly scuffed (when the sunbreak scroll mechanic is added into the mix) and won't let you use hail cutter sometimes.

Blast dash is much better than you showed.
You can change the direction slightly for the initial blast dash and than you have FULL ariel control for the next 2 ariel blast dashes even after shelling in the air!
You can hold your momentum and change your direction in ANY direction at ANY time with ariel blast dash. That is so crucial for your gameplan with blast dash. So you don't blast yourself into an attack.
And you can even do your overhead smash after landing with blast dash and delay it significantly with sliding momentum for extra range or different timing.
As a Gunlance main since the days of old, this is so much fun and I hope this helps everybody to learn and love blast dash as much as I do.

Guard and guard up are useful in playstyles with wyrmstake, just go charged shell -> wyrmstake -> guard reload on monsters attacks and repeat. I'm simply loving that big, stunning number and see monsters fall stunned (add slugger to the set for more fun) 👌🏻

I love the gunlance! I've used it since world and smashed through rise with it. This is a great guide to get started with!
A tip if you use hail cutter. You can use it after any shell while in the air and save you the up swing. I've just emptied the clip in the air and then hit HC into full burst. Super fun combo.
If you wyvern fire, watch out for other hunters! It will send them flying. Aim up or down to try and lower the chance of hitting a friend.
Love the content. Was hooked with the first gunlance video and stayed for the new ways you show the game being played. More people need to deviate from the meta.

    Don't forget
    1. Normal shell - better at fullbursting, mild wyrmstake, mild at Wyvern fire, mild bullet barage, mild charged shelling, low on single shell firing, mid range.
    2. Wide shell - better charged shelling, better single shell firing, low fullburst, low Wyvern fire, low bullet barage, ko wyrmstake, short range
(Wide is the only shell type that has negative damage multipliers towards fullbursting, Wyvern fire, bullet barage)
    3. Long shell - better Wyvern fire, better bullet barage, better wyrmstake, mild fullburst, mild single shell firing, extended range.
Good upload you got but I think you should mention the damage value of shelling lvl since that's where the most of the damage comes from for gunlance. Slap lance is good but the highest Damage dealing melee hits is the wide sweep and over head slam so not to optimal but it's there.

Started using this weapon today for the first time in the entire series. I've always liked the concept, but never wanted to commit to learning the hop. Not being able to roll with my weapon turned me away for years. After practicing with the weapon and watching some guides, I can now say this is my favorite weapon. The transition from the charge blade also meant that I didn't have to grind too much to get a build together.

Adding a tip as well, blast dash then shell once or twice in the air then hail cutter(uses one wire bug) on the way down then do full burst combo into errupting cannon (combo it with guard reload, faster than wyrmstake cannon & recharges wyvern fire too). Works wonders if you have lvl 3 wire bug whisperer in your build, hope this helps too 😁

In case no one else has pointed it out.
    Even in MHW:I
The three shelling types specialize in one type of normal AND special shelling!
Long type shelling does extra damage with wyverns fire (as demonstrated in this video) and charged shells!
Normal shelling will do bonus damage for the full burst (obv because theres more shells to burst with)
And the wide shells have a punchier wyrmstake blast that did more damage, and singular shell shots
It actually wasnt so obvious in world, because you could only tell by comparing numbers, but I see team monhun found a great and creative way to incentivize your special shelling attacks with unique effects or more obvous signs of better damage! (Such as stun for wide wyvernstake/a delayed blast, 4 separate damage numbers instead of 3 bigger ones for long type wyvernsfire)
Btw, raging brachy armor was great for charge blade and gunlance, haha.
Rise is in my opinion the peak of QoL in a monhun game.

Just so you know, I watched the vid twice to see if you mentioned it but there is another way to reload your shells & wyrmstake. If you do RT + B/A/Circle (xbox, switch, ps) after an evade hop (side/back hops), you will do a full reload and it's pretty quick.

My advice to any future aspiring GL users.... Experiment with the gunlance. Don't be afraid to be aggressive. Forget the shield is there, and with practice, you'll come to realize just how much you can do for almost any situation.this weapon is the veritable swiss army knife of melee weapon. You can cut tails, you can get stun damage, you can have high guard, you can rocket around... Hell, you can even do what the insect glaive users do and stay in the air like a bullet powered jetpack.
Try out a few shelling types and playstyles, and you may even end up liking them all in their own way.

I couldn't wrap my head around this weapon in Sunbreak with the older guides out there, so when starting over on Rise on the newer consoles I chose Gunlance since all weapons you start out with little skills and work your way towards more.

Lance is fast if used correctly but even better when you can just counter everything
Lance tip if you counter things like poison balls you can stay in it and not be poisoned. Doing the insta block and then doing a attack will give you dome i frames but then youll be poisoned
Edit: i did this with a rajang lazer. Blocked with regular counter and stood in the lazer poking his face. Another tip power guard takes more chip damage so use regular guard on weaker attacks unless you know monster will do a combo. If so power guard

The lance is (in my own opinion at least) one of the best melee weapons when it comes to uptime of damage - with it's jump in guard counter and counter poke (amongst other things) you can keep up the attack relentlessly even while the monsters up in your face attacking you.
Pair that with the fact that rise adds the ability to just tether yourself to the monster now, even when it moves away you can just jump right after it in full guard making uptime more ridiculous than ever!
Sorry for fanboying. LOVE the lance lol.

damn that last tip be ringing true like gospel. more often than not when I get my ass handed I can't even be mad at the monster in question. my bro be getting mad for me and I'm like "why we mad? I had that coming" I'll be pulling mad combos off thinking I'm build different like that and then miss my wyrmstake cuz hubris forgot to remind me the massive TELEGRAPHED spin my op was about to do. now my stake blowing up literal air and I'm staring at a Barioth on my flank looking for the smoke. it's always a long second between that stare and the following punishment where I always think "god forgive my sins, I know I deserve what's coming for me in 3...2...1"

    Couple things ive noticed
    1. You can use hail cutter in the air, so after blast dash you empty your aerial shells, then you can hail cutter to get them all back, land in burst fire, wide sweep, quick reload, repeat. Honestly, hail cutter midair is really really stupid strong, as the animation is so much quicker.
    2. When your weapon is put away, either after a wirefall of just a regular wirebug, you use trigger to aerial shell, then switch to B to continue shelling or Y to overhead slam. Makes wirefall basically an offensive tool, as you can immediately jump into an aerial shelling hail cutter combo.
Also, i disagree with your statement of block heavy styles being unviable. Your statement is more true in rise than any other game, but your guard stab is very versatile, can open up to numerous combos, and you can return to a guard after a sidestep if your in trouble. I personally picked up a very guard heavy playstyle in 4u, and while i shield less in this game, i will often "reset to neutral" eith the monster by guarding.
I find guard up to be an amazing skill, as it allows you to always have an emergency option for everything besides full map nukes if you cant dodge in time.
This is an incredibly fun weapon, and while it has a very high skill cap, the entrance barrier is basically nothing, as you can do entire matches with just a single combo of your choice. Ive played gunlance in every game released since 3u, and this is its best itteration yet

Buttons are not that complicated honestly in terms of pressing one or both buttons, just remember that if you pressed both buttons to do your rising slash, your overhead slam is going to be the single press, and if you did it with a single press it will be the double buttons.

One of the last weapons i want to learn or... re-learn? back in 4U i used eery weapon and love it, just changing play style bettwen missions, but the combos were simple, so now, in rise i can enjoy weapons that have new moves and feel better in general.

Being a Gunlance Main I don't know if I have an ideal playstyle yet. I do enjoy playing Long and Normal Shelling Gunlance and it has carried me thus far the Wide Shelling Gunlance i have not used alot (mainly because they are very scarce and in between my Gunlance Upgrades) I just might get myself a Wide Gunlance once i have the resources and see what works I have some ideas I just need to put it to practice

As some one with a lot of practise in rise gunlance, i can say that i hate the Wyrmestake Cannon! It is so easy to make a mistake in the button inputs, that this shit thing often messes up ALL of my combos.
I would be a happy boom stick user when they implemented in the next title update a switch skill that removes it from my move set... i even did not need anything in exchange for it! just to do my combos with out getting interuptet with that thing would be more then rewarding enough for me! :o

I don't want to sound stupid, but I've only just started the game, but how do you get more shells for the gunlance? I can't seem to find them in the crafting list, and I just end up running out of ammo pretty quickly.

  • @justinrazon7200
    @justinrazon7200 Год назад +6

I assume it's called Gunlance because of the Gunblade, FFVIII. It functions practically the same as how the Gunlance works in Monster Hunter, a melee weapon that you hit with that has the feature of exploding on hit when you pull the trigger. The explosion itself also is extremely similar for the regular shelling, just a small puff of fire thing. The only real difference is that obviously one is a lance and one is a sword... blade?
Also yes I know there are plenty of other games that feature some sort of gunlance thing that is very similar but the one in FFVIII is the closest and oldest version of the weapon that I can think of without googling it.

Honestly the only reason why I bought rise and started playing gunlance is to be a discount valstrax. (is it effective? Mostlikely not, but I bet it will be fun) I would also like to mention that switching verticality of shelling and thrust attacks is really akward on PC as the high thrusts and high charged shelling is bound to one of the side buttons of the mouse initially (and there is no real workaround since rebinding it somehow makes it even more akward) and coincidentally if you are capable of accidentally pulling out the shield instead of attacking, because the other side button on the mouse is bound to guarding.

EE is one of those skills where, when you start playing a weapon, you want more of it, and then over time, as you learn the monsters, you can peel it back one point at a time, until you're in a good place.
obviously, we all have different needs/wants, and if EE2 or 3 really clicks for you, then go for it! The comment I made in the tutorial is in the context of the "experts" telling us that EE2 at a minimum is a MUST HAVE for high level play. And that is just not true. I'm not even a high-level GL user, and I find EE1 to be a really nice distance.
Not everyone will take the same path, and so if yours goes through EE3, so be it!
