      It's also extremely safe if you aren't sure you have a window for bigger attacks. You can return to a block really quickly from this move. I've blocked so many attacks directly after doing this that I could swear should have absolutely hit me. It isn't strong, but it's quite nice in its versatility.

    • @non_da
      @non_da 3 года назад

      that's a really weak attack and you shouldn't use it in most cases, honestly. the X+A is far stronger.

    • @laggalot1012
      @laggalot1012 3 года назад +6

      @@non_da You're right that it's stronger, but it doesn't really matter, because the times at which you can and have reason to use either are so different that they really don't compete at all.
      You cannot uppercut straight out of guard (and using a Guard Thrust into the uppercut is faster than dropping guard first). You typically have no reason to Guard Thrust if you weren't guarding just before, fringe cases or safe play aside. If you're doing either to aim a shell or stake, it literally doesn't matter, you use what you need. If you play a sweep combo playstyle (full burst or swinglance), you just use whichever gets you into the combo loop faster, which depends on the starting position.
      Both have their uses, and they differ too much to say one is better.

  • @Rhidian
    @Rhidian 3 года назад +25

    Rurikhan, Hail Cutter can be used anytime midair where it goes straight to the reload and then to the vent upon reaching the ground, skipping the rising up part that occurs when it is used on the ground.
    Notably it can be used after Aerial Shelling. One of my favorite combos is Blast Dash -> Aerial Shelling -> Hail Cutter. I Blast Dash to a spot above the monster, Aerial Shell to adjust which direction I am facing, and then reload plus WF vent with Hail Cutter when going down to the ground. It lets me use Hail Cutter from further away and from a safer position (midair) compared to the normal grounded version.

    With the release of 3.0, my friend who got less interested because he hit a wall against Chameleos, came back with newer vigor and interest to the game.
    He did a little weapon searching since he found Hunting Horn boring, longsword too much, and bow too demanding of inputs.
    He said he wanted to try gunlance. And I showed him a clip of mine doing hail cutter on Ibushi in rampage with counter signal. Aerial shelled him to bring it down with the aerial slam while Proof of a Hero played in the background.
    He got sold. And I showed him your guide to gunlance. He feels much more at home now. And feel so proud to have converted him to the FUNLANCE gang.

    Lifetime ranged player here, been maining light bowgun in Rise. Was thinking about trying GL, cause I enjoyed it in the demo. I found your video, and just wanted to say:
    Thank you! This video was so incredibly in depth, and helped me switch from just flailing around to actually USING the weapon. Ive been a ranged player since I started playing in 4U, so trying melee I always struggle on the whole idea of waiting your turn, doing the parts of your combo you can, and then backing off again. But after finding and watching through your entire guide, I got back out there and felt SOO much more confident in what I was doing. Managed to kill an HR Ratholos without dying (which when melee is great for me) and felt like such a chad when I combo'd into the wyrmstake to cut off the tail.
    Great guide, thank you for all the time and info, it helped so much to not only hear the combos, but how and when to utilize what parts of them. Gonna be sticking with GL for a while, and may try actually shifting into maining it a bit more

    Misc info:
    While charging your shells, you can flick up or down to choose which of the 3 angles you wanna fire in.
    (Forward/angled/upward)
    After guard reloading, shelling immediately keeps the angle of your last shell.
    Also you can poke then charge shell rather than just charge shell, for about the same amount of time.
    Ground Splitter can combo into wyrmstake that can be directed 360°
    You can also go from guard reload to guard thrust for small openings.
    Since multiple charged shells don't combo into wyrmstake, firing upward is good against flying mons in rampage.
    The skill Offensive Guard can be activated with guard reload or Guard Edge if timed right.
    Guard thrust into guard reload is pretty quick.
    After rising slash(x+a) you can shell, rising slash (just x), shell, ect.
    Good for heads and tails.
    A neat combo
    Thrust, cancel into ch. shell, wyrmstake, guard reload, guard thrust.
    (Or normal thrust for looping combo)
    Some of the guard reload stuff might work for quick reload, I haven't tested quick reload extensively.

    23:02 I’m having a lot of success with Hail Cutter over Ground Splitter with a normal lance set up. The double Full Burst combo into Wyrmfire or Wyrmstake is a huge punish on any immobilized monster, and the fact that it works in the air lets me spend multiple shells to approach with Blast Dash and still land with a full burst.
    In addition, it makes Wyrmfire actually impactful in multiplayer hunts where one shot isn’t enough to get consistent part breaks and stuns.
    Not that Ground Splitter is bad, but give Hail Cutter another chance!

    Ok, after getting evade extender 3, I was able to get Basel armour, and I’m loving gunlance again! Took down all elders first try. My advice for everyone struggling with gunlance… if you time out your hunts, go evade extender first, than artillery and attack boost or offensive guard. If you don’t time out hunts but struggle to survive, get guard, guard up, evade extender, and only after go for damage skills. As for wide/normal/long… I guess the proper way is, if you can consistently full burst, go for the one with most shells. If all you can consistently do is shell, shell-shell and poke shell, wide is the one to go for!

    Great guide. One thing you forgot to mention is that Guard Reload only loads 3 shells, which is terrible for the Full Burst gameplay, but not a problem at all for Wide Shell.

    One big thing about Hail Cutter that kinda redeems it: You can use it mid-air (with weapon drawn) to skip the lengthy first half of the animation. You still get the reload, you still get the slam (which is stronger than a normal slam), you still get the cooldown reduction. One combo that I've been using is Blast Dash -> Single shell (to stop forward momentum) ->Hail Cutter. This is useful if you want to lean into Wyvern Fire alot (with a Long shelling GL for instance). Also, even though it requires two wirebugs, they come back way faster than Ground Splitter. Hail Cutter cooldown is 10 seconds per bug (20 total for both), Ground Splitter 30 seconds for the one bug.

    One thing you forgot is that after Ground Splitter, you can tap A to shell (also has the 360 pivot thing if you dashed past the monster) or hold A to do charged shells (very useful for Wide GLs because you can supercharge shells).

    I discovered something new (to me) recently. If you are airborne and you hit ZR+A you do a horizontal aerial full burst, Aerial Burst in game. This works under most circumstances when airborne but it requires you to have Charged Shelling selected. If you have Blast Dash as your chosen Switch Skill this combo will instead instantly Blast Dash. Along with Aerial Burst you can fall while doing a Charged Shell. You can perform either of these aerial actions at the absolute peak of Hail Cutter (input it right after the reload) but it will interrupt the slam and thus remove the Wyvern's Fire gauge reduction effect. Performing Aerial Burst will also disable the ability to perform any other actions till you land. This means you can't transition into a slam, but you can perform the same Wyrmstake combo once you land as a normal Full Burst, either Wide Sweep into Wyrmstake or just land into Wyrmstake. Additionally, falling Charged Shelling works the same as grounded, you can transition into a quick Wyrmstake upon landing. Lastly, Charged Shelling while falling will auto fire once you land. If you fall for far enough while charging however (or release it early), even for Wide Shelling's longer charge, you will fire it and can fire more shells or do an Aerial Burst. Releasing a Charged Shell while airborne will knock you up the same height as a normal Aerial Shell, meaning if you're high enough or quick enough you can do it multiple times. Do note again though that neither of these mechanics are present when you have Blast Dash equipped. These can be useful and/or fun anti-air strategies, especially when paired with Hail Cutter.

    When using charged shells, you can redirect your gunlance to face 90° upwards and follow that up into fast wyrmstake might be useful for aiming at the head with wide GL. Just letting you know because it wasn't mentioned.
