It’s French, not Italian. You never get tired of this aria sung by so many tremendous singers. I’m 93 and have known and heard some of the most gifted singers. Thank you.
Love it! Had never heard this song before. As I watched the performance, though, I suddenly realized that Andrea Bocelli (my favorite tenor) has had to memorize everything! I know most singers etc. do, but seeing Placido Domingo use music sheets just reminded me of it.
I think it's because Domingo is singing the baritone part here even though he is a tenor. He would know the tenor part by heart having performed the full opera before. Just my guess though.
This piece never fails to bring me to tears. To see and hear these two greats, in their gilded years, proves that music is immortal and the people who make it are gods.

Well, to be fair, Domingo will have the tenor part memorised, having played the part in 1964. And at this writing he has memorised the baritone part, as he played that role in 2018.
What amazes me though is that he had to learn the lyrics (even in a foreign language in this case), pitches, rhythms for all the songs he sings all by just listening and without anything to look at. And to be fair, extremely rarely had I seen Bocelli forgets about lyrics on stage. Considering the wide range of songs he sings, that is an accomplishment in itself.

One of the greatest operatic duets ever composed, the beautiful and powerful duet from "The Pearl Fishers" by Bizet. This is an outstanding performance by two of operas greatest tenors, Placido Domingo and Andrea Bocelli.
There is always going to be opinion differences on just about everything including this duet performance. I have heard the other one that you believe is superior and really it’s just a matter of taste. In this his case I don’t agree or disagree. Both are excellent.

The first time I really heard and listened to this duet, I realized what it was all about. Bizet's magnificent score and the rising tenor voices, cut through all the burdensome weight of time and of the pretense of musical hype, to touch the real meaning of the struggle and rewards of life that can be shown through art. This is why there is a form of music known as grand opera, and why I love it. Yes, the performance was sublime, but so are so many we might listen to. Deny yourself nothing, simply enjoy!
Such a beautiful feeling when I listen to these two incredible voices. Hope Andrea & Placido have both shared the true love and passion they sing about in their own lives. Thank you RUclips for bringing such joy to all.

Too many "whiny posters" here! This performance may not be the very best (over the past 500 years). But...for those who ARE truly knowlegable, this performance really does "hold it's own" quite nicely!! Now....let's quit complaining and enjoy the music.
You just had to spoil all the beautiful comments. NOONE here has been negative but you. I can't believe that even in a beautiful venue like this, someone as unsightly and unpleasant as you has to come here to spoil it for everyone else. NOONE here has demeaned Placido & Bocelli whom we all love. Scram! You idiot!
"over the past 500 years". At the time of (my) writing, in 2020, the opera had been written only 157 years ago (so, for the OP, only 151 years). To be fair, the previous 349 years would have (trivially) held no better recordings. So there is a sense in which "the past 500 years" is true. But it might as well have been "the last 4 billion years".
Stunning! Let us teach Maduro and Guaidó in Venezuela this beaitiful aria, let us immerse them in the realm of real brotherhood through these sublime lyrics; maybe, that way they shall aquire true patriotism, and will finally start making their nation great.
My message to the "expert" critics is that instead of analyzing and criticizing the different aspects of this performance and tearing it apart ask yourself just one question: Do you enjoy it? Does it gives you pleasure? If no, than just turn it off and listen to something else, and be quiet.
+George Marton This is very enjoyable in its own right. I don't much care if Domingo is not a true basso/baritone. I do admit that the Bjoerling/Merrill version is superior, but I liked this, mainly because I just love this aria.
The humility of the man brings me to tears! Bravo Mr Domingo! I wonder how hard it was for him NOT to break into the tenor part, which he would have sung HUNDREDS of times by 2013. Bravissimi!
Holy crap! This has to be the best concert performance f this duet that I've ever seen - and then some... A world class tenor dropping down a bit (natural range?) and a blind tenor wo obviously cannot read a score. They SING and when the fine coordination is necessary, they touch. A challenge at best, these fellows pull it off with heaven-given class. Well aware of Mr. Bocelli for many years and well aware that he could sing, I had No Idea that his voice was that clear or powerful. Mr. B. Can lead the pack and he obviously has the voice. Mr. Dominigo, we know and well love...over 40+ year he has demonstrated that he can sing ANYTHING - and well. The best, most versatile voice if the current century. The gentleman can make any tune unto a symphony. Some ill informed fans still cling too the wonderful voice of Pavoratti. I get it. and he was among the best. He NOT a musician in Mr. Domingo's 'SS, but simply a gifted and powerful singer. Mr. Domingo has those assets as well but can also play piano and a professional level, compose and duct and even manage TWO opera companies! ' If #45's policies are executed in full, eve the talented U.S. citizen may get tossed out... Is this what we want? #45 has a lot in common with Adolph Hitler, pre-1933. ENOUGH That #45 fool simply must go.. The terms or means do not matter - just Get Him OUT! What do I REALLY Want? More classical tracks and less about the truly sad #45. An airhead at best.
Pav was a great singer but not a musician. Domingo is a great singer plus great musician. Neither is the best of all time, but they are outstanding. I prefer Domingo's voice, as it is fuller, richer and more versatile.
Being a critic must be the easiest job. You go to a cafe, order your soy latte frappe cappuccino, pull out your computer and write glowing reviews for those who paid you to and dump scurrilous drivel on those who didn't.
What absolute rubbish - you don't need to be a trained singer - although I actually am - to tell a good voice from a poor one, and Bocellis voice is poor.

One of the greatest operatic duets ever composed, the beautiful and powerful duet from "The Pearl Fishers" by Bizet. This is an outstanding performance by two of operas greatest tenors, Placido Domingo and Andrea Bocelli.
A better version of this is the recording with Jussi Björling and Robert Merrill.

There is always going to be opinion differences on just about everything including this duet performance. I have heard the other one that you believe is superior and really it’s just a matter of taste. In this his case I don’t agree or disagree. Both are excellent.
You think Bocelli is one of opera's 'greatest tenors'? You obviously haven't listened to many then?
@@edwardkerrigan5356 Oh oh, an expert has appeared from the netherworld of RUclips trolls 👿 to instruct us all on how knowledge he is regarding opera and its artists. Oh great one please disappear back from wench you came so that we may hear from you no more.
@@Brace67 When did I say I was an expert - although I obviously know as much, if not more than you about the subject? Everyone is allowed to express a personal opinion, which is really what we are talking about, even me. How many of the great tenors have you listened to, incidentally? Could you name some of them? If you have really LISTENED to some of the greats you would know that Bocelli's voice is poor by comparison. By the way the word is 'whence'.
loved this since i was a kid
What a great duet, by two amazing singers! Placido is 72 yrs old at the time of this... wow...
A seventy two year old savaging a two hundred year old aria don't know what bocceli is doing abyssmal

@@brookeggleston9314 you do realise that by definition, your reason is misdirected? You are actually saying that, because I asked someone who was heavily criticising this music, if they could do better? And by doing so, I thereby portend to be able to!

Heavenly music sung magnificently!
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed and sung
the first part is right, but the singers are terrible, neither a baritone nor atenor for opera : listen ruclips.net/video/p2MwnHpLV48/видео.html
It is impossible to stop the tears running down my face when listening to something so pure
Fantastic. Thank you for posting.
Wonderful. Thank you both 🎉
Such a beautiful feeling when I listen to these two incredible voices. Hope Andrea & Placido have both shared the true love and passion they sing about in their own lives. Thank you RUclips for bringing such joy to all.

Each of them have there unique voice and all fabulous. A opera singer from Malta is very very good also. His name is Joseph Calleja.
"there" for sure...

Scram! You idiot!
@@amadisdaiwess5993 troll
"over the past 500 years". At the time of (my) writing, in 2020, the opera had been written only 157 years ago (so, for the OP, only 151 years). To be fair, the previous 349 years would have (trivially) held no better recordings. So there is a sense in which "the past 500 years" is true. But it might as well have been "the last 4 billion years".
Stunning! Let us teach Maduro and Guaidó in Venezuela this beaitiful aria,
let us immerse them in the realm of real brotherhood through these sublime lyrics; maybe, that way they shall aquire true patriotism, and will finally start making their nation great.
My message to the "expert" critics is that instead of analyzing and criticizing the different aspects of this performance and tearing it apart ask yourself just one question: Do you enjoy it? Does it gives you pleasure? If no, than just turn it off and listen to something else, and be quiet.
+George Marton YES, TRUE INDEED.
+George Marton This is very enjoyable in its own right. I don't much care if Domingo is not a true basso/baritone. I do admit that the Bjoerling/Merrill version is superior, but I liked this, mainly because I just love this aria.
What? A voice of truth in Z wilderness: Exactly, our friend. Great music is just that -- 4 our listening pleasure. Blessings 2 all....

This music give me joy in heart ⭐
Brilliant duet from two fantastic artists xx
Lovely duets Thank you!
The humility of the man brings me to tears! Bravo Mr Domingo! I wonder how hard it was for him NOT to break into the tenor part, which he would have sung HUNDREDS of times by 2013. Bravissimi!
Too true , Andrea didn't let him down either. Can we take a piece with us? Well this would be it , for me.
Beyond beautiful. For ever.
SImply the best ever. Words fail me.
Surely we can't rise to this magnificence and then just become extinct? Damn!
If #45's policies are executed in full, eve the talented U.S. citizen may get tossed out...
I prefer Domingo's voice, as it is fuller, richer and more versatile.
this is a full bodied aria of incredible power.
You're kidding?
The critics are the ones who can't sing a single note. Just enjoy the moment and the gifts Placido and Andrea are sharing with us with love.
Being a critic must be the easiest job. You go to a cafe, order your soy latte frappe cappuccino, pull out your computer and write glowing reviews for those who paid you to and dump scurrilous drivel on those who didn't.
@@Tempusverum And what do you do that is so much superior?
What absolute rubbish - you don't need to be a trained singer - although I actually am - to tell a good voice from a poor one, and Bocellis voice is poor.
