Not a cool story but my family calls me the "Spray Paint Queen" because I've changed the color of my decor multiple times. I also have a colorful pillowcase that I fill with gifts for my grandkids. I've used it for five years and it's so quick and easy to use.
I went to a garage sale today and felt sad for the seller who's an elderly hoarder. Her garage had been completely filled with items that belonged to several people, including her deceased mother. Her children and grandchildren kept bringing bins out and asked if she wanted to keep anything. I could hear her fear and hesitancy in letting things go. I bought 3 items at a great price. Before I left I told her (in front of her family) that I was proud of her for relinquishing her items. That I know how hard it is because I'm a recovering hoarder. I gave her a big hug and I think she felt less shame and more hope as I left.
That's how it works, right? You help me let go of my clutter and I help someone else. Smiles...

Pre pandemic I would sell unwanted items. Then I decided I wasn’t comfortable anymore and now I leave my unwanted items set out at the entrance to my neighborhood. It’s been really exciting to see one neighbor with my daughters crib and extra water table, another with our toddler swing set, and another with the pushcart. I said if anything was still there the next morning I would find another way to dispose of it, but that’s never happened.

I did this with our shed out back, I pulled everything out. I asked my husband does this work? No. Do we know why it isn’t working. Yes. Is it fixable. Yes. Will you fix it in three days and use this tool? No. Then I wrote what was wrong, what was needed, and wrote it on a piece of paper, attached to the item and put it out by the curb. There were 15 items- weed wacker with a bad choker (allergies?🤣I couldn’t resist!), chainsaw needing a new blade (he had 3!), chainsaw needing something else, etc. The next morning EVERYTHING was gone! Very cool tip! THANK YOU! 💯@Ashley Kaelin

I had a quilt my mom made for me as a child which
    1) I had outgrown,
    2) was already in a poor shape, especially the binding and
    3) I did not use anymore since I made my own quilt which I started to use on my couch.
So I repaired the quilt by attaching a new binding and putting a picture of an owl from fabric on it and gifted it to my nephew who needed a blanket for kindergarden. So the precious quilt stays in the family and is used again :) And my nephew knows, that the quilt is from aunty and granny ;)
And for some fabrics I did not want to use any longer... I called a kindergarden just next street of me and asked if they might need a (big) box of fabrics for crafting. They happily agreed and I finally got it out of my space :)

I had some old sheets that were slightly stained and no longer the right size for my bed so I cut them into strips, edited out the stained parts, roughly sewed the pieces together and made a little bedside rug by arm knitting everything together! It sounds labor intensive but it didn’t actually take too long and, though it’s not perfect, it’s a place for my feet when I’m getting in and out of bed and a nice thing I made for myself to give second life to something I would have otherwise thrown away :)

Finally, a minimalist touching on the topic of where things go when we declutter! What a great video! I like how you mentioned that if it’s necessary for mental health/ finances, then just donate. However I wish you had pushed a little harder after this point that if you have the mental capacity / time, it is an absolute RESPONSIBILITY of everyone (minimalist or not) to follow sustainable steps when sending things out of our homes. So much of minimalist aspiration content seems to focus on the “getting rid of stuff” phase, but not on where it goes after. I think this is such an important topic that ultimately affects so many sectors, from charity / thrift stores to municipal waste management systems to packaging development and ultimately, our planet.

I worked for a recycling center in the late 90s. There’s so much more to recycling than one thinks. If it’s not metal, it’s extremely unlikely that the item gets recycled. Plastic has to be sorted by type & by hand. Even if it is placed into to the correct recycling bin, other elements can contaminate it, making it to where it is more cost effective to chunk it.
It would be great if someone was able to come up with a way to get the recycle rate up to at least 20%.
As for everything else, it has to go somewhere, & it takes up more valuable space in your home than it does a landfill. You may advertise it for free, & after about 48 hours, you’ll question your sanity. There’s just a ridiculous amount of scamming going on.

Honestly, I have personally been working on this process for a couple of years now, having inherited so much useable and non-resuable but sentimental stuff... if i had read your comment in the early stages of my process I would have probably come apart at the seams. The good thing about this, is that anyone beginning the process of getting rid of stuff naturally (eventually) comes to the conclusion that questioning what comes in to the home is the best way to live life going forward. Decluttering and carving out the life you want from the accumulated stuff is a very personal journey, and often the support of a community like this is helpful. Social "responsibility" and guilt is not helpful. Hopefully each person will come to their own commitment in that area, but they Definitely don't need to be hammered on my those who are further down the path.

I am in the process of a whole house declutter and deep cleaning. I am not going minimalist by ay means as I am an avid reader and crafter/sewer. But what I am getting rid of I am donating to my local Habitat Restore to help them so they can build homes for people. I don't have any clothes to donate but those would go to Goodwill. I don't want to deal with yard sales or selling online, and would rather just help people through Habit Restore. I also have a homeless camp box that I fill with things they can use including nicer clothes for job interviews, toothbrushes (I used to coupon and have way too many), and kitchen items like can openers and pots.. • @olivemaycards
    @olivemaycards 3 года назад +2

The pain of getting rid of the stuff helps remind me of the top of the pyramid - don’t gather clutter in the first place! Buy Nothing is my favorite because when I can see something helping a neighbor I’m more likely to go and look for more so I can help more. And I read the “asks” pretty regularly to see if there’s stuff people need that I have. A word in recycling - in small towns in the US especially you need to know your rules. No matter how theoretically recyclable certain plastics are, all that’s accepted is jars, bottle, jugs, and dairy tubs. They sort using shape, and need a certain volume to be able to sell the bale, so even if a clamshell or k-cup is the same #2 resin number it won’t be recognized by their sorting equipment and may contaminate the waste stream.

BUT I ended up reusing them on the sink cabinet to hold all my cute tea towels and cleaning rags. I just roll up the towels and slot them in. It works great! And now no one mixes up the "good" towels and "cleaning" towels because they are on separate doors.

I think it’s often worth considering if textile recycling is better than taking bags of clothes to the donation center. As you mentioned, donation centers are overwhelmed and most of our clothes don’t sell and end up being sent to developing countries (interrupting the local economy) or being sent to a landfill. If you can find out what your local donation center does exactly with unsold clothes (sometimes they do recycle them), then that can be a good solution. Otherwise, check in with them to see what they think they can actually sell and take the rest to textile recycling yourself to ensure you know where it ended up.

Definitely a good option! I’ve often heard it said that we don’t have a supply problem as much as a distribution problem - the food, clothing, and other things that could go to people in need just are not able to find their way there because of logistics. 😞

I'm currently in the process of separating trash from treasure. I'm definitely not going minimalist, but using the space I created in drawers, shelves, and cabinets that is there to have my place (a condo) look neater and being easier to be kept neat (cleaning!). This journey had a bumpy start, now it is rolling. "Bumpy" meaning I started to declutter and got stuck along the way, and let it be for months on end. Well, I had a major medical problem to deal with, which caused chronic disabling pain. Now that the medical problem is out of the way, I organized some help of volunteers that support me every week. The volunteers do not judge me for what I want to keep (try that with friends and family, how do I know). They just hold open the big sack and when finished, carry it to the garbage can, they clean the kitchen while I'm sorting through my belongings. Of course they notice when I'm about to get stuck and ask questions. It is non-judgmental, that is calming and has helped me along. I'm always looking forward to their visit.
I still am not quite mobile yet, but the d*** pain is gone, which has lifted my spirits, there is now much more energy to tackle things.
If you have community service available for people with disabilities ( could be mental and/or physical) by all means, get the help. Yes, it is tough to let some outsider into your life, that decision to go with it took nearly two years(!).
I'm on my way to a happier and easier life.

@@elizabethnaylor9561 Hello Elizabeth, my deepest compassion for enduring a lot of pain. Before I got my hip joint replaced I was taking pain killers by the handful. I nearly wrecked my kidneys. It is hell when the pain killers just alieviate the pain, it's not gone but just bearable.
Now, that's a bit hard o tell: I live in Germany, a country where social services are fairly easily obtainable (apart from the paper work). Nonetheless, maybe your church offers help, or, a local health service has a phone number, or maybe your community center knows, ask in your local pharmacy, ask the folks at the desk of your primary health care provider. If they don't know directly, they may know whom to ask.
Yes, it does take some efford to get help, but you will be very proud of yourself when you get answers. Do not eypect a positive outcome right away, you may have to follow a lot of tangled strings. And, my saying is " 'No' is a valid answer". At least it clarifies which string you don't have to follow anymore.
I wish you strength and endurance on your journey, Do not give up! Hugs, Isabella.

In my town, we have a little shoppers program where you can donate some items in good condition to a program that allows kids that are apart of different town programs to pick out gifts for their parents/caregivers. I also donate unused craft items to a local after school program and the town senior center too.

I love upcycling :) used delivery boxes to make small category boxes for our hallway cupboard (as well as the packing paper, wrapping paper, and decifix). Made a pillow cover for my 'Noodle' (C-Shape Pregnancy pillow which I actually use for sleeping posture correction) as well as some blouses, skirts, and dresses from old bedsheets. My partner liked my home organization ideas enough to encourage me to make them into ASMR videos. So now, if I ever feel like a project didn't go so well, I don't feel bad to get rid of it, because it also served another purpose. :)
Thanks for all the extra ideas and inspiration. It has been great to 'binge watch' your videos today while sorting out my paperwork :)

I love your hierarchy! I want to add "use" after "return." Most of the time, we plan to get rid of things and have already decided to not use; however, there are some times that as I am decluttering, I find that some items can be used a bit more, like certain craft materials. Was going to skip to "regift/sell" but am having time using part of it. Will go to "regift/sell" once I am done since I will still have plenty of leftover! Thank you so much for such a beautiful hierarchy.

Thank you for this. So true and responsible. I try to sell things we are done with on Craigslist, and if things don't sell after a week or two, I list them as free on Craigslist. It's win win - they get something they want for free, and I don't have to drive to Goodwill and likely have it in a landfill.
I like buying less. It's odd how so many videos on RUclips about decluttering involve immediately buying new storage containers and hangers as part of the process. It's such a shame.

My recycling use of my old towels are as household rags, or to cover your nice front door rug when entering the home from wet or snowy shoes or boots. If the toilet ever over flows, I use my old towels, and not my good ones. Keep old towels in the car too, to clean up any spills, or transport anything that could get messy or to protect anything you maybe transporting that’s fragile. It definitely comes in handy.

At first I thought you spoke too much, BUT I realized that it was good, because it gives you time to think and rethink everything. Whether you just want to declutter or more, it takes a completely different mindset that you must practice over and over again til it becomes part of your life.

Seeking out relatives to give gently used baby or toddler items to is also a great idea. There are many people who would be more than happy to take some of that off your hands if they have a child who just went through a growth spurt, and they may not want to spend a ton of money on new clothes. There are many schools who would be happy to take any new or gently used craft or school supplies to be able to use in a classroom. There are also community and religious organizations who will take excess clothing that may not be able to be re-sold or donated, and they can re-purposed that into blankets or sleeping mats that they’ll give to the homeless or to animal rescues. If you’re crafty and have a stash of yarn or any fleece/cotton knit type fabric, also check out organizations called Project Linus and Warm Up America. You can burn through your stash by making squares in a designated size, and you can send them off to this organization, who will send finished blankets to people in need or crisis. You can also make them into hats or blankets that can be donated to local NICU units for preemies, or lap blankets for people in long term care facilities. These are great options for items that are still usable, that may or may not be sellable.

    • @MollyT119
      @MollyT119 3 года назад

There are also community recycle boxes that will take items like paper, clean cardboard and aluminum, etc. Also, Target stores have recycle bins at the front end of most of their locations. They accept cans, plastic shopping bags and bottles, paper items, and some stores even have a receptacle for batteries and electronics that are recyclable. Also, as the holidays approach, watch for charities who may start seeking donations for gently used toys, clothing, and bikes that they can refurbish and give to children in shelters and in foster care. There are so many great options out there to reduce waste, and pass on some items that can get a second life in a new home!

My Buy Nothing group has been my main mode of getting things out of the house. It takes more effort than a trip to a donation center, but the bonus is that you can re-home things that donations centers won't even take. Like, packing material or half used bottles of lotion. So, I always start there and see what happens. If there's no response (rare), I wait a week and post again. And if you have a lot of things and paying individually feels overwhelming, you can do a 'free sale' and just tell your Buy Nothing group that there's a lot of stuff out on your lawn/curb at a particular time for free (and then post the remaining items individually afterwards). But the best method is your first, and I'm experiencing the amazing benefits of buying far less and with more intention! When I consider buying something these days, I think long and hard, and our home, our peace of mind, and our bank accounts are better for it! Thank you for your channel, Marissa 💕

If you live (or work) in a city most likely there are homeless people, or now I try to use “person without a home”. Once I have a bag or a box of stuff ready to donate, I then quickly go through my fridge and cupboards to see if I have any food that makes sense to get rid of now. Then I get in my car, and look for a group of at least 6-10 people who appear to be without homes. I park my car, usually across the street (for safety, even though I have never felt unsafe), get the items out of my trunk, walk over and hand the items directly to them. I let them know that this is for everyone to share, and then I say goodbye I like giving the items to a group of homeless people, so that each item is more likely to go to an individual who actually needs it, and will use it. I’ve given blankets, tons of clothing, shoes, some cooking items, basically almost anything. Obviously, I do not give them large furniture, items for example. The cool thing about doing this is I know my stuff is going to someone who truly needs it, and whenever I am wondering whether I should donate something or not, it makes it much easier to let go of something, knowing that it will be going to someone who truly needs it.
I have not always donations like this. Are used to take most of my stuff to a men’s homeless shelter. However, a few years ago, Salt Lake City built new shelters, farther from downtown and spread them out. One day I had stuff to donate, but did not want to drive very far, and it dawned on me that I basically live in homeless central, and I could just hand the stuff directly to people. Another positive benefit is it feels so good.

    Liebe Marissa,

🚪getting stuff OUT of my house is my biggest hold up. I feel like some things are too worn/used for donations but still have life in them and someone else will use them so I find it hard to trash. This is ALOT of my stuff as I have received a lot of hand me downs, plus I have 4 kids of my own who’ve likely made good use of whatever it is. But the time and mental capacity it takes to “sell” these things online is just too much to manage.
