Great Video! Checked out the Pallbearer album and was completely blown away by how immaculate the production and playing was. Thanks for the recommendation and will check out more from the genre
Any chance on a guide to Neurosis video? One of my favorite bands of all time and, imo, incredibly important to the development of doom, sludge, and post-metal. Would also be cool to see a video on post-metal in general, bands like Neurosis, Isis, Sumac, Kayo Dot, Intronaut, etc.
Pallbearer needs more love, they haven't put out a bad album and Heartless shows that their songwriting is getting tighter. Made my day seeing them included in this video.
Wow, a Warhorse nod! Sadly a band that broke up too soon to really get their day in the spotlight. Saw them a long time ago in Chicago as an opener for Electric Wizard on their Dopethrone tour. Acid King was on the bill too so yeah, epic to say the least!
Bloody solid list man and YES excellent for getting people into it. A lot of fans of the genre shout out "Dopesmoker" in the same way Slayer fans shout SLAYER at everything - Great album, sure but something to be eased into. Nice work \m/
Okay Oliver I took up your challenge. Never been much a fan of Doom Metal but I never really disliked it either. The ideas were bolder and the instrumentals more emotive. The vocals were cold and intriguing like an abandoned castle at twilight or something. I have nothing bad to say except it still sounded a bit too much like 80s hair metal and nothing was particularly memorable. Two I really loved Pallbearer - Sorrow and Extinction (2012) - Spotify tells me this is 48 minutes but it could have been three hours. For me when I lose all sense of time that is a sign of quality music. This music takes you to a place and keeps you there. Always moving just enough to keep you feeling engaged. For the first five minutes I wasn't sure I was going to like it. But it this music has a way of growing on you and become part of something inside of you. Brilliant. Electric Wizard - Dopethrone - This is exactly how I like metal music. Throbbing pummelling and disorientating. Everything is messy yet somehow it stays together though always on verge of falling apart. I was engaged every second until that moment I suddenly realized that I have been in a trance for 5 minutes. How does that happen? There those were my thoughts. Cheers
Nobody cares about your personal attachments to music. Thousands of people worked together to create this genre and thousands more are keeping it alive. Go listen to music you know how to respect.
Cathedral - Forest Of Equilibrium. Often forgotten yet one of the most influential Doom albums. When it came out in 1991 there was absolutely nothing like it.
Great list. Love that Pallbearer album, but I remember seeing YOB around the same time I saw Pallbearer -- in support for Clearing the Path -- and in terms of live experience YOB blew every doom band I had seen and have seen since out of the water.
Props for including Trouble into the list, as they often get overlooked and overshadowed by Pentagram, Candlemass, Saint Vitus etc., and this is coming from a huge Saint Vitus fan. I think Pagan Altar is another "proto-doom" band that used to get overlooked a lot (given their history) and they are amazing, doom in a purest form: bluesy, soulful, and built on of emotion. And you are right, Sorrow And Extinction is a fantastic album, one of the best doom records that came out during this decade. Cheers.
Although I think Thergothon is great, I love Skepticism's Stormcrowfleet even more. The Call of the Wretched Sea by Ahab is definitely worth and honourable mention as well, I think. Another great video, well done! Looking forward the Eno and Björk videos.
So glad you had Pallbearer on here. I was thinking what would be the fifth one and this one came to mind. Foreigner is one of my favorites. Also, Dopethrone is my favorite doom metal album and one of my favorite albums in general. Great list. I'd love to see one for mathcore.
Pleasantly surprised you made a guide like this! Personally, I would have replaced Pallbearer with Sleep's Holy Mountain, but solid list through and through! Dopethrone is one of my favorite metal albums ever btw. Those RIFFS!
Yodh by Mizmor is a great Blackened Doom Metal, it also has elements of drone metal as well, his shrieks and anguish ridden voice just adds to the overall feeling of dread throughout the entire 5 tracks
interesting that you discounted Sleep as a first Doom metal experience, I came from really fuzzy bluesy rock like qotsa to Dopesmoker and Holy mountain also, this was the best 20th birthday present
Check out Orodruin- Epicurean Mass. Anything from Solitude Aeturnus. Last Chapter- Path to Always. And of course a doom classic my boys from SA, Texas Las Cruces- Ringmaster, a must!
I want to mention some of the "white" doom metal bands that are very underappreciated: 1) Veni Domine 2) Forsaken 3) Paramaecium 4) Place Of Skulls (Victor Griffin from Pentagram)) 5) Pÿlon 6) Illuminandi 7) Kohllapse 8) Century Sleeper 9) Goliath Particularly excellent is Forsaken's "After The Fall" album - crushingly heavy riffs, combined with really excellent song-writing and dark atmosphere.
good selection also Winter , Nuerosis, my dying bride. and the masters (whom most likely wouldn't claim to be doom) Melvins! Yes! ENO can't wait. cheers
Even though I'm usually already into whatever genres you make these guides for, you always suggest material I've never heard of. Also I'd love to see a guide to post metal.
I think my introduction to doom metal must have been Burning Witch's 'Crippled Lucifer', very dark and sludgy stuff. I'll have to check out these bands, good list💀
That was a very well thought out delivered review. I love Doom Metal and know quite a bit about it and still managed to learn a few things from this video. Thank you.
Could you do '5 albums to get into IDM'?You did mention the genre at times but you haven't really gone into much depth.I would suggest an 'Aphex Twin' album, Thom Yorke's 'Tommorow's Modern Boxes' and maybe an 'Autechre' album. As I said, those were only suggestions but IDM is a very interesting genre and I would really appreciate it if you do a video on it.
This is a fantastic list! Sorrow and Extinction totally belongs here in my opinion. I can’t say that you missed anything because all lists are subjective. It’s redundant to think otherwise.
Ok 5 Doom-Metal Albums (I'm not that good with labels, so bear with me, if you think something is not "really doom") Here goes: Sleep's Holy Mountain Earth - Pentastar: In The Style Of Demons OM - Advaitic Songs Big Brave - Au De La The Body - I Shall Die Here
Just getting into doom, checked out the albums one by one as you went through them in the vid. I liked elements of all of the first four albums for sure but nothing blew me away. Then you got to Pallbearer. And I put the album on. Holy shit. A real game changer for me! Brilliant idea to include something contemporary that showcases a unique take and also an homage to past doom bands.
love these types of videos, id love to do what you do, but i always feel like i have a lack of understanding of some key genres. these really help, and i think you're extremely underrated as a youtuber!
Gotta make sure to read some HP Lovecraft while listening to Dopethrone, track titles reference his work and they mention him in an interview iirc. Great video.
Weight of Coronation by Horn of the Rhino is a severely underrated album. Ultra heavy sludgy downtuned riffs and soaring, emotive vocals that are borderline soul/gospel. Really love that one.
Doom Metal is one of my favorite genres of Metal...Very nice list deep_cuts. To extend your list (or even offer an alternate) some of my favorite bands of the genre are as follows; There's the band Conan, from Liverpool (My personal favorite-check out "Blood Eagle") Slomatics, from Belfast. Salem's Pot and Monolord, from Sweden. Lycus, from Oakland, CA. Khemmis, from Colorado. Destroyer Of Light, from Austin, TX. Shroud Eater, from Florida. There are, obviously, too many to cover. I personally appreciate your acknowledgement of the genre PERIOD! Cheers, and hope to see some more great posts!
A complimentary list 1. Pentagram - Relentless 2. Solitude Aeturnus - Into the Depths of Sorrow 3. Bongzilla - Gateway 4. Ahab - The Divinity of Oceans 5. Elder - Lore
What a great video, the little separate video cuts to correct himself had me lol'ing EDIT: wtf he put Thergothon in there, obviously Im a big fan, awesome shit man
Just discovered the channel, great work. Dopethrone is probably one of my favourite album. It is so amazingly heavy and crushing, filthy and powerful. You can really feel the hatred they put in this album and it's definitely why it's so great in my opinion. Beside this one and sleep dopesmoker I never really digged into Doom metal. I guess this video is the perfect occasion to fill the gap. Thanks.
I recently found them and Mournful Congregation in an effort to find some more funeral doom beyond My Dying Bride. Great finds since I have found that I like my doom without synths.
Anyone who wants a list of relatively newer bands/records to check out, here are my picks: Primitive Man - Caustic Bell Witch -Mirror Reaper Cough - Ritual Abuse Temple of Void - Lords of Death Conan - Monnos And I just can't leave out Khemmis. Either of their two latest records. Also, I back his choice of Pallbearer but I prefer Heartless to their debut.
I was so happy to see Thergothon here. I discovered them in 2010 and they quickly became a joke between my friends and I (even though the album is awesome). We used to Rickroll each other with it (having never heard of Rickrolling) by playing "And Yet the Watchers Guard" at the most inappropriate moments. E.g. at a party when people were drinking and listening to EDM, I would pipe up and say I have a good music suggestion 😉 needless to say the reaction was always well worth it
Early Proto Doom (even though the lines are blurred) - Blue Cheer/Randy Holden - Pentagram/Bedemon - Mountain/Leslie West - Budgie (self-titled is heavy af) - Jerusalem - Atomic Rooster (more prog-ish) - Bang (superb riffs) - Barnabus (not very popular at all. check out 'the war drags on') If you're gonna appreciate the heaviness of doom you should check out where it evolved from.
Just found your channel the other day, and I'm loving it so far. Especially since it's with so many different genres. Most channels that do metal or rock do metal or rock. And they tend to stick to popular stuff. You've gotten rap, kraut rock, post-punk, and a few different great bands with their own videos. I try to listen to different styles, so this has been really fun, even if it's styles I already listen to. I've listened to a decent amount of doom, but haven't listened to the last two, so I'm excited for them. Would you ever consider doing one for gridcore or emo/screamo(not the My Chem kind, but more of Pg 99, Cap'n Jazz stuff)? Those are two of my favorite genres, and it would interesting to hear your thoughts if you listen to them.
Worth making a note of Sleep- Volume One, it's not as good as Dopesmoker but is far more accessible and has a really dirty and lo fi quality to it which is chilling, would highly recommend to people who wish to delve even further into Doom Metal (in this case Stoner)
Very nice albums, bro. Anyway, if I made my own list of 4 albums to get into Doom Metal, I would have talked about Pentagram. Their first album, "Relentless ", is a very good example of this genre ( my opinion), but it isn't necessarily too slow, making it more accessible to traditional Heavy Metal listeners
before watching, my list: Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath Sleep - Dopesmoker Toner Low - 3 Eagle Twin - Unkindness of Crows Suma - Let the Churches Burn and honorable mention (although I consider epic doom an entirely different beast): Epicus Doomicus Metallicus by Candlemass

It would be amazing if you could do 5 albums for Atmospheric Black Metal or Blackgaze. There's a lot of hidden gems on these genres.
Anything by YOB is a must.
Mike is a great guy! Killer band live!
I absolutely love Yob
Been listening to a lot of Monolord more recently...the song 'At Niceae' is about as dope as it gets man.
Can't wait for your next video, man!! I mean literally, I can't just sit and wait, I have to go to work.
not a true fan then
...I wish I could, though!
I'm so glad you included Thergothon, that's awesome. Saint Vitus, Sleep, Bell Witch, all good places to go from there
mmm I do love that Thergothon record
Yodh by Mizmor is a great Blackened Doom Metal, it also has elements of drone metal as well, his shrieks and anguish ridden voice just adds to the overall feeling of dread throughout the entire 5 tracks
best channel - the way you describe the music is inspiring, it's almost a composition in itself
I'm not a big fan of Doom Metal, but it's nice to see you uploading
Have a go, you never know!
Maybe later, been listening to a lot of new music now, so I have a lot on my list. I watched your Swans video, so I'm pretty big into them now
Sweet list dude... I fuckin love doom. After I found Sabbath and Pentagram, the rest is history... hooked.
interesting that you discounted Sleep as a first Doom metal experience, I came from really fuzzy bluesy rock like qotsa to Dopesmoker and Holy mountain
also, this was the best 20th birthday present
Stream from the Heavens is a damn good pick. I love that record. Quintessential Funeral Doom.
Have not heard that much doom metal, so it is great to get introduced to new music. Thanks man.
Condiment Refraction Truer words have never been spoken lol
death/thrash metal next? luv you oliver
Check out Orodruin- Epicurean Mass. Anything from Solitude Aeturnus. Last Chapter- Path to Always. And of course a doom classic my boys from SA, Texas Las Cruces- Ringmaster, a must!
I want to mention some of the "white" doom metal bands that are very underappreciated:
1) Veni Domine
2) Forsaken
3) Paramaecium
4) Place Of Skulls (Victor Griffin from Pentagram))
5) Pÿlon
6) Illuminandi
7) Kohllapse
8) Century Sleeper
9) Goliath
Particularly excellent is Forsaken's "After The Fall" album - crushingly heavy riffs, combined with really excellent song-writing and dark atmosphere.
White doom metal? What does that even mean?
Hasan Mir Christian doom metal
I'm surprised Sleep Dopesmoker isn't here
i supposed its hard to get into if yo're new to doom metal. Listening to a 1 hour song of a genre you've never heard before may be a struggle
He kinda explained why bands like Sleep and Saint Vitus weren't on the review.
Dopesmoker is stoner metal more than doom. Electric wizard meanwhile is definitely doom despite having a psychedelic sound
People are too used to 3-4 minute lyrical loop songs. Dopesmoker requires listening, don't think most people are into that. Fuck 'em
Nice choice with Thergothon :) Do check out Skepticism if you haven't already.
ah yeah another good Funeral recc!
Agreed, and nice profile pic
good selection
also Winter , Nuerosis, my dying bride. and the masters (whom most likely wouldn't claim to be doom) Melvins!
Yes! ENO can't wait.
cheers
Nice video. The lyrics on Weird Tales, Dopethrone describe the pulp fiction of HP Lovecraft, RE Howard, August Derleth and Clark Ashton Smith etc...
Even though I'm usually already into whatever genres you make these guides for, you always suggest material I've never heard of. Also I'd love to see a guide to post metal.
I'm glad I can introduce some new stuff to you!
Loved your work.. Subscribed and liked.. Keep up the good work.. Budd.
Props for having Caravanserai framed!
Awesome, awesome channel, man!
Yet another really well done guide, I had a feeling Earth might have been on the list but great records none the less
It almost was!
This is a fantastic list! Sorrow and Extinction totally belongs here in my opinion. I can’t say that you missed anything because all lists are subjective. It’s redundant to think otherwise.
Thats not how you use redundant. Well, i guess its how YOU use redundant, but not how people who know what it means use it
Warning "Watching from a Distance" - Mirror Of Deception "Foregone"- Novembers Doom "To Welcome The Fade"
Ok 5 Doom-Metal Albums (I'm not that good with labels, so bear with me, if you think something is not "really doom")
Here goes:
Sleep's Holy Mountain
Earth - Pentastar: In The Style Of Demons
OM - Advaitic Songs
Big Brave - Au De La
The Body - I Shall Die Here
Just getting into doom, checked out the albums one by one as you went through them in the vid.
Man I loved all five of these🤘🏻 I've been really craving some new metal to get into. Thanks!
I also recommend Bell Witch - Mirror Reaper
Hell yeah funeral doom is amazing
Good record, but i don't think it's the best to get into doom
@@Tamanegi you’re right honestly. now that I’ve been exposed to more doom, I realize how niche they are. But it’s goooooooood shit
looking forward for the Bjork video. Have been thinking about listening to her but have no idea where to start
If I see a "5 Albums to Get You Into NEW WAVE", I would love you more than I already do.
Love from Chile - South America!
That Delirium beer in the background 👍🏻👍🏻
Tremens is good stuff
A complimentary list
1. Pentagram - Relentless
2. Solitude Aeturnus - Into the Depths of Sorrow
3. Bongzilla - Gateway
4. Ahab - The Divinity of Oceans
5. Elder - Lore
What a great video, the little separate video cuts to correct himself had me lol'ing EDIT: wtf he put Thergothon in there, obviously Im a big fan, awesome shit man
Great video mate, well done. I appreciate your depth in this subject....well researched and laid out.
Can you do one on symphonic, atmospheric, or folk metal? Loved this one!
potentially in the future! Thanks for watching!
where is MF Doom in this list?
always trolling Sudev
Sudev Sen Remember all caps when you spell the man's name.
HahaA good one
Sudev Sen ALL CAPS. DONT FORGET
Would still highly recommend tho.
Thanks.
Shape Of Despair is my favourite Funeral Doom Metal band.
What about Evoken?
I recently found them and Mournful Congregation in an effort to find some more funeral doom beyond My Dying Bride. Great finds since I have found that I like my doom without synths.
Anyone who wants a list of relatively newer bands/records to check out, here are my picks:
Primitive Man - Caustic
Bell Witch -Mirror Reaper
Cough - Ritual Abuse
Temple of Void - Lords of Death
Conan - Monnos
And I just can't leave out Khemmis. Either of their two latest records. Also, I back his choice of Pallbearer but I prefer Heartless to their debut.
Monolord - Empress RIsing
Aanndd I forgot Hooded Menace. Really love that last one.
E.g. at a party when people were drinking and listening to EDM, I would pipe up and say I have a good music suggestion 😉 needless to say the reaction was always well worth it
that sounds hilarious lmao
Early Proto Doom (even though the lines are blurred)
- Blue Cheer/Randy Holden
- Pentagram/Bedemon
- Mountain/Leslie West
- Budgie (self-titled is heavy af)
- Jerusalem
- Atomic Rooster (more prog-ish)
- Bang (superb riffs)
- Barnabus (not very popular at all. check out 'the war drags on')
If you're gonna appreciate the heaviness of doom you should check out where it evolved from.
I'm not really a doom fan, but Dopethrone is one of my all time favorites.
Oh my god you mentioned Scald‘s Will of the Gods is Great Power, that album is an absolute masterpiece that barely anyone knows about
Very nice albums, bro.
Anyway, if I made my own list of 4 albums to get into Doom Metal, I would have talked about Pentagram. Their first album, "Relentless ", is a very good example of this genre ( my opinion), but it isn't necessarily too slow, making it more accessible to traditional Heavy Metal listeners
before watching, my list:
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Sleep - Dopesmoker
Toner Low - 3
Eagle Twin - Unkindness of Crows
Suma - Let the Churches Burn
and honorable mention (although I consider epic doom an entirely different beast): Epicus Doomicus Metallicus by Candlemass
LOL -- I love that face after, "...die in solitude."
