Turning Large Steel Tube into Hydraulic Cylinder Barrel | Machining & Welding

  • This video is of a job we did start to finish to machine up a hydraulic cylinder barrel for a CAT 631 wheel tractor scraper Apron lift cylinder. We started with the old cylinder barrel and machined out the welds to remove the barrel end and head flange. Heated barrel with flame torch to expand and remove ends. Head flange needed to be bored out, built up with weld and then machined out to suit new barrel tube. Lots of machining to outer diameter of new barrel tube to match OEM standard and interference fit for head flange. Drilled oil ports into new barrel, heated head flange for expansion and fitted to new machined barrel. Then MIG welded barrel ends onto new barrel to finish.

I worked as field service tech at an industrial hydraulic shop for 8 years. I pulled the leaking ,bent, cracked, split, blown up or what ever else a customer could manage to do a cylinder to the shop. Our cylinder techs, machinists and welders did amazing work cutting heads and tails off bad tubes and even machining new heads pistons and glands. I see some very expert work being dong in this video.

Your local Community college should have machinist classes if you live in the United States? It has a lot of Mathematics. Try a few courses and see if you like it? Take mig welding and Tig while there...
I was a machinist and welder before I joined the United States Navy... I was 22 and couldn’t get some thing out of my system so I went for it. I was hurt while serving. The Anthrax vaccine for the First Gulf War has caused my SI joints and spine to fuse. This has left me permanently disabled...

Strange German T lathes that ran backwards, VTL lathes, small CNC lathes but preferred to do big stuff.. work abruptly stopped in March 2003 when the company went Insolvent, so, I took the brave decision to retire at 55 and moved to the coast.. Loved your video though, and the singing, and as I worked night shift only, being in a lonely part of the factory, I often burst Into song, more to keep me awake than anything.. I welded bronze overlay on cast iron pistons. Then the machinist would cut seal groves sometimes the my welds had low spots or crap that made a hole. I hatted having to drag the welder all the way to the lathe then having to cover the bed and controls to protect them They teased me and told me that was my punishment for the bad weld.

CAT will usually replace those stubby cylinders instead of rebuilding them unless they come from another shop or if they are a "special order" AKA you can't find replacements for them. They go with the rule "We won't touch it if it's going to cost more than 1/2 the cost of a new cylinder to rebuild" Both of my brothers work at Cleveland Brothers CAT Hymac division and have been repairing and rebuilding cylinders for 20+ years. You should see some of the junk they rebuild. They both complain about how cheaply made the Volvo cylinders are compared to a CAT cylinder with similar specs.
