    What? No… The B58 has been proven very strong platform and BMW makes the best in-line 6 engine currently. Straight 6 makes the Supra what it is. I think Toyota should have just put more effort into making the chassis more of their own rather than using the Z4. As someone who initially didn’t think the BMW x Toyota collab was great for the Supra, (and I own BMWs) now it makes sense why they did it.

    The touchpad rant was effing HILARIOUS! Most had the same opinion, but unable to put it as succinctly. 😈 The Supra comparison is extremely thought provoking; I think you're right, but I'll need to chew on that one for a bit. The RWD RC 350 had rear-wheel steering too, so it really could have been the next Supra. Very interesting take... Thanks for posting, great review!

    The Supra should’ve been the Toyota Version Lexus LC with the LS Twin Turbo 3.5V6 since the MK4 was The Lexus SC but, I get it would’ve been expensive. So The RC would’ve made more sense for The Supra! All Toyota had to do was put The Twin Turbo 3.5 from the Lexus LS in here! It didn’t need to have an Inline 6 that bad & The Supra has always been a 2+2 Coupe! Also The Scion TC should’ve been the Toyota Celica after Scion was killed off!

    Had the chance to drive an RC350 FSport AWD and have to agree. It's a fantastic car in a lot of ways. The Mark Levinson sound system is the best sound system I've ever heard in any car. Definitely would be a perfect car if it didn't have the touchpad and if it was RWD.

  • @ing8404
    @ing8404 Год назад +4

    I often wondered why Toyota didn't just develop a turbocharged version of the 2GR engine for the Supra - the 2GR was LITERALLY the replacement for the 2JZ.
    Toyota made a GR variant fitted to a RWD car with a 6 speed manual covered in carbon, but it only released in Japan :(
    There was also a special version which made 360hp!
    You could say "ohhh but it's all about straight 6", but when the Nissan GTR changed to a V6 nobody complained.

    • @alouisschafer7212
      @alouisschafer7212 Год назад

      Yeah like why didn't they just do it themselves and went to BMW instead?

    • @ing8404
      @ing8404 Год назад

      @@alouisschafer7212 They went with BMW because they wanted a straight 6 engine, but didn't want to spend money developing one. But the cost in royalties to BMW would surely be more than just turbo charging the 2GR. Would have been a hell of an engine. Lotus uses a supercharged version of the 2GR that makes well over 400hp. Twin turbo would make it easily 500-600hp.

    W-why does a car have a touch pad? I'll never understand newer cars and I build computers...
    You are 100% right that this should have been the new Supra though. The SC300 in the mid 90's was the famous MKIV Supra only with less power on a cut-down version of the same 2JZ engine (and MUCH MUCH cheaper now, not a bad car to pick up!)

    I love the RC, even the touchpad. I own a 2019 so I’m biased. However the RC could never be a Supra. A straight six is a must. And the RC platform is too heavy for a true sports car. The RC is a luxury coupe.

    The wife's car is a '15 GS350. Same engine, and apparently the same platform from the b-pillars back (I guess the RC is IS from the b-pillars forward and GS from the pillars back with a little bit of bracing from the IS-C, or something). Love the thing. Feels every bit of its nearly 4k pound curb weight, but in a good, planted, solid sort of way. Also surprisingly nimble, and genuinely fast. Very easy to get large speeding tickets cuz it just goes and is so stable and confident. Wonderful car, and I would really like to replace it with an RC when the time comes.

    As an RCF owner, I disagree with this whole idea that this platform should've been the new supra. Especially the 350. That thing is underpowered for it's weight. The RCF is plenty fast, but I still don't think it should've been the supra. I think it does very well being in a category of it's own. The 2GR would have to go for it to be even close to a supra. The B58 is a great engine, regardless of whether or not it's a Toyota. Way more tunable than the 2gr has ever been. The 2GR is so hard to get any power out of without shelling out $10k for a supercharger.

    I can feel that plastic through the screen. The sliding tachometer is cool but unnecessary. Lexus used to be great but now is sort of forgotten. Imagine if they'd leaned more into their F division and benchmarked the M3 and SL AMG just like they did for the original LS400 with the S-Class. Toyota knows how to build good stuff, they're just too cautious to really go all out.
    Touchscreens were mature technology in 2016. There's no reason why Lexus has been fussing with the trackpad and joystick-mouse thing for so long.

    Isn’t the RC Lexus cars based on the same platform as the FRS/BRZ? That may be why they didn’t use it for the Mk 5 Supra, going to the same proverbial well one time too many.
    Toyota was pretty dead set on using a straight-six, even if they bought the engine from BMW, works it even fit into that engine bay?
