A great city yes, but "European", no. I speak as an ex-YU diasporan in Britain. At one point there were over 270 mosques in Belgrade alone..they all got destroyed by Austro-hungarians apart from Bayrakli mosque which is the oldest religious structure in Belgrade..there was even a buddhist pagoda built by Kalmyks. Wow we didn't know about the Buddhist temple or the amount of mosques that were there before. We walked by the only one that it's standing and it was just so random to see it there in a regular street surrounded by other buildings, but that is the beauty of Belgrade. In Serbia, 17 Roman emperors were born including the first Roman emperor (Trajan Decius). And in nowadays, you can notice cultural, historical and religious influence and all those legacy of the Romans in this area. Sirmium (today’s Sremska Mitrovica) was the city in Pannonia, an ancient province of the Roman Empire.
Trajan Decius was born in that part of the Balkans but he was born before Serbians were there. He was born in the 1st century and Slavs migrated to that region around late 6th and early 7th century. So some of those emporers were born there but they are not of Serbian origin.
@@computeraudiophile9590 that definitely is not true. There was a rebaptism and force conversion of the Albanian Catholics there. Obviously before Albanians were called Albanian but they are the original inhabitants of that region not Serbians. When you are baptized they change your name. So a lot of Serbian DNA is all different. That is very proven. So what is the original Serbian language? It is still a form of Slavic. How come all Serbians only speak a Slavic language and don’t know of ever having another language? Cause Serbians always spoke a Slavic language. Serbians aren’t Dardanians or Illyrians. There is a lot of new research being done that find all this to be true. Serbians have a lot of culture but the Serbian government doesn’t tell the Serbian people their real and true history. There are other countries governments that do the same. I love history of every nation. I find all of it to be interesting.
@@llcamaj82 Albanians were brought from Chechenya,in 13th century. Language is similar to Chechen. They became nation in mid 19th century in Vienna convetion. As for the DNA,you'll find Celtic,Nordic(Scandinavian),South slavic,(Tribal, thats how they call us in French school books),Iliryan,(Turkish/Persian around 2%)etc. In Serbian language itself,4000 celtic words exists. Its well known that Celts were first in Europe, than Britain. It is much complicated for every European nation,to pin point who they truelly are. Did you know that all Germanic tribes were Slavic? The deeper you go back in history, the more complex it is.
That's actually what we love about New Orleans. Since it's one of the oldest cities and has a cajun culture, it doesn't look anything like the other cities we've been to. But we agree that most major cities often look like each other. But now that we've seen more of America, we realize just how different many cities can look when you get in the meat of it. We were just in a part of Jersey City that had one block that reminded us so much of England and another that reminded us of NOLA. It's crazy how architecture can tell the history of a place. Selena LOVES architecture because her dad worked in it, so we spend so much time admiring that part of a city.
It was a bit creepy at first, especially on our second night when I made him walk 10k steps to the waterfront that was under construction and deserted hahha

Very informative guys, love that you included Masa in your video, it was very interesting hearing it from her perspective! Love that the architecture of the buildings are mixed throughout town.
13:35 Thank you, you are so kind for learning those phrases in Serbian language. People here (and in most other south-eastern Europe's Balkan countries) are different when it comes to expectations of foreigners speaking our language. No one in their right mind would expect from a foreigner to speak Serbian (plus it's a hard language to pronounce with a complicated grammar etc.). Compared to some other larger European nations, we are a relatively small crowd (of only 7-8 millions). So, we are not like French, the Germans etc.
Thank you so much! We went back last year, rescued a dog and a cat and stayed in Serbia for almost a year. We recently left and we wish we would have learned more Serbian. We truly loved our time there and will keep going back every chance we get to visit friends and cheer with Rakija!
You guys definitively envious to learn more about Serbia. All that questioning at the airport would’ve been intimidating too. Good to know that they open up.
Lieles got some languages in school but never was able to speak any of them. İ think their education system in Serbia when it comes to language is very high and def higher than the US or Spain İ started learning languages at a early age but it was all private academies so i was lucky, and yet look at my accent lol
YES.. It's very important to know a few phrases when going to a new country, especially when English isn't the first language. But the most important phrase is.. Where is the bathroom? LOLOL!! And this comment made us extremely happy ! Where are you living now? We def want to go back and do a road trip to get to experience smaller towns and more traditional food. When was the last time you went there?
Yes and really good English. They actually watch a lot of American tv shows and movies. Our host told us: you are the first Americans we have in our apartment, so tell everyone because we (serbians) grow up loving Americans but we barely have them here. They are afraid of us. 🤣🤣🤣
I'd say it's because of media that we speak more than one language, so I agree there with Maša. Besides Serbian, of course, I'm also fluent in English and German because I grew up watching a lot of cartoons on Super RTL (German Kids TV Station) and Cartoon Network (in English). Of course, later in life school expanded my language knowledge, but the media like music, TV shows, games, books and the Internet is what really gave my language skills that extra kick. :)
You guys are freaking amazing when it comes to languages. We, in Spain or the US, do not watch anything but in our language. It is sad because I think it enriches the country and its people. So, kudos to you!!
Hahaha, we only share what we learned and experienced while we were there. We were thrilled to have a local sharing her insights. Wish we can meet more locals next time
I know a lot of people have anxiety over not finding people who speak the same language as them. We recently received a question about not knowing how to prepare for trips and feeling like they don't know how to travel the correct way. We're going to make a video about it and explain that there is no right way and you can inch out of your comfort zone and not jump out right away.
Yes it is crazy! Good luck with the video, will be watching it! I (Maria) get excited about new languages, one of my dreams growing up was speaking as many languages as possible, but I know I'm weird in that sense lol
So no wonder that as a New-Yorker you are (almost?) smitten by Belgrade. Many of my friends and people from Belgrade who travel around the world, say that only City they could live in (that has elements of Belgrade) is New York. Happy travels!
Belgrade is so much historical and architectural stronger than NY. NY captivates because of what represents but also the atmosphere and feeling of the city. It is hard to describe, but NYC is more of a feeling (to us) But yes Belgrade is incredibly beautiful and like nothing we have seen before
Quite indeed and the Yugoslavian buildings are so impacting. I mean I grew up watching the wars on this side of the world, so it was like closing my eyes and be able to recreate some of those images I saw on TV. It's insane

yeah could see from your previous videos that people there are so friendly and super nice! just like you guys
They really are!
That makes 2 straight countries where you’ve had a wonderful local friend!
I know right, we are still looking for Croatians. Lol
Having that variety of architecture makes sightseeing so much more interesting. Sometimes it can get a bit boring after a while when all the buildings start looking the same
Totally agree there!
Can't help but to notice the place you guys are hanging out there! Looks so pretty and relaxing! Glad they speak English there in Belgrade!
Yes it's "the beach" of Belgrade. If you look at the map, you will see there's no ocean near Serbia. But, they have Ada Ciganlika and Lido Beach, two paradises (on the river) that are as good as the beach or even better
Wowww look at the place is calm it's so clean. I love the place. Someday I will visit that place. Common guys let's have some couple beers in my place. Let's talk about your trip. Enjoy
It's is wonderful! Visit Belgrade
Good interview with Masa! And nice project!
No todo tiene que ser en inglés!
Gracias chicos! Learning from the best ☺️
You guys have multi language videos
Thank you for the video and your perspective. I plan on visiting Belgrade and Novi Sad in the Spring. Being that Serbia seems to have done a nice job of keeping their cool and not over-reacting to the pandemic, while still trying to maintain a high level of safety, it looks like the perfect under the radar country to visit. I hope you guys stay safe and have many more happy travels.
Thank you so much! We hope you enjoy it.
Turkey and Croatia have done a decent job at maintaining those two things as well.
Serbia was a great experience for us and also looking into going back next fall. Let us know if you have any questions ☺
Thank you Marija! writing it down
What an in-depth interview between you guys and Masa! Love it guys!
Thank you guys! So happy you enjoyed it
Very interesting this mix of architecture styles even in one same street! Nice!
It's very shocking, especially seeing the Yugoslavian buildings. They are still standing regardless of the damage
I think it gives a lot of character to the city. I didn't mind seeing them, the opposite, love to see how it's part of the landscape representing a very Important time of Serbian history.
Thanks for watching us.
Agreed! Language is a barrier for those who love to travel abroad. Glad to see Serbia is not one of those places 🙂
They are wonderful
Aw so great to hear how nice the people are there! And very cool that they know so many languages!!
Yes, it's very impressive
That’s really nice that local people at first are quite intimidating but once you put a smile on your face, they will welcome and embrace you.
That’s why you need to always smile when talk to people, one smile can make a huge difference 👍🏻😊
Yes, as a visitor we always have to smile and be polite every where we go
Thank you guys
Thank you so much for sharing your traveling story to Serbia. Generally entire Europe the schools and colleges offers multiple languages to be taught which is very beneficial. I wish USA would add that as well. I miss my home. Sharing your traveling story to Serbia brings so many good memories. God bless you both. 🙏🏻🇷🇸❤️💙🤍
Sandra, thank you so much for your kind words.
Yes wish the US and Spain did a better job at introducing languages like Serbia does. It is such an amazing thing to see.
Do you go to visit often?
Are you part of the big Serbian community in Chicago?
Thanks for watching us !
At one point there were over 270 mosques in Belgrade alone..they all got destroyed by Austro-hungarians apart from Bayrakli mosque which is the oldest religious structure in Belgrade..there was even a buddhist pagoda built by Kalmyks. Balkans is very rich in history and many many different people and nations passed through and left their mark.. i really like your videos guys, thank you for being respectful and nice presentation of Belgrade😊
Wow we didn't know about the Buddhist temple or the amount of mosques that were there before. We walked by the only one that it's standing and it was just so random to see it there in a regular street surrounded by other buildings, but that is the beauty of Belgrade.
Thank you so much for watching us. We love our time there and we learned so much about history and people. We def would love to go back and travel more around the country.
Thank you thank you for your words ☺️
One must know that it was not the Serbs who destroyed the mosques, it was the conqueror.
@@goranvuletic8873 Yep, by Austro-hungarians
agreed language is one of the think put people on the fear list when travellign overseas, but i guess if you are a couple you always have each other. But seems belgrade is english friendly which in fact great, especially for maria to order wine lol
Yes absolutely! The most common languages we heard people speaking after English was French and German.
It was really cool 😊 kudos to them. In the US people only speak English and in Spain with all the tourism we have, and we barely know any second languages
Very helpful conversation! Its so nice to interact with he locals! You guys are amazing! 🤗
Thank you guys! Masa was awesome!
Ajde sto razumem Engleski nego sam sve razumela na Spanskom!!! Hvala ti Kasandra 😂😂😂😂
Srećni ste, super ste!
That was an awesome interview 👏 she has such a great energy
Thank you guys! 😘😘
How wonderful to meet Masa. Some wonderful tips and excellent information. Loved this interview. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you 😊
I love to see different architectures between different countries / cities.
Belgrade is definitely very unique on its own 😍
Very yes. Thank you guys
Thank you so much for the nice 'shocking' things you encountered in Belgrade. But, please come again,I enjoy so much you sharing so many beautiful things about my country. My suggestion is you stay for, lets say, 2 weeks, and visit the tourist places in Eastern Serbia (the Golubac fortress,7000 year old archeological sites like Lepenski Vir,Viminacijum, the Djerdap gorge amd its beautiful viewpoints, Western Serbia (Zlatibor,Tara and Zlatar mountains and monasteries in their vicinity, Southern Serbia (the Devil's city which was the candidate for the Seven Wonders of the World) and so,so,so many other places and towns like Novi Sad,Nis etc. I cant wait your new videos. Blessings from Belgrade🙂
Hi Jelena! We stayed in Belgrade for over a month, we slow travel because we work as we go. We are planning to get back soon and explore the country, maybe rent a car and go to smaller cities and towns. Thank you for your love and support! Can't wait to be back
44 veces??? 😱 No tenía ni idea!
Muy fuerte, uno de sus edificios religiosos más antiguos es una mezquita, y es la única mezquita que dejaron en pie por respeto.
Fascinating, we read about the Roman emperors and we were so in awe.
Thanks for sharing this!
Trajan Decius was born in that part of the Balkans but he was born before Serbians were there. He was born in the 1st century and Slavs migrated to that region around late 6th and early 7th century. So some of those emporers were born there but they are not of Serbian origin.
@@llcamaj82 Serbs were always on these parts. Just look at the Haplo group of DNA,and everithing is much clearer.
Nice! Yes 100%.
Belgrade is unique in architecture, I'm sure Selena would enjoy seeing it. I will keep posting some IG photos so I can show her more
Great job shedding a new light on Belgrade Maria and Lieles, can't wait for the next stop!
Thank you guys!
Asking for the check is universal! Haha. We also learned the same thing.
Yes crazy how it changes
If you circle like that to the waiters they will bring you another round of drinks not the bill 😁
hahaha In Spain too! another round!! hahaha
Beautiful drone shots at night! Nice comment on the acoustic of the city. We can almost visualize what you’re saying Lieles.
It was a bit creepy at first, especially on our second night when I made him walk 10k steps to the waterfront that was under construction and deserted hahha
music background everywhere?? we're IN haha
Hahaha yes they are big on their nightlife, so you can hear music everywhere and they told us is quiet now with the Coronavirus restrictions
I guess Spanish is fluent as well as English from Belgrade! Thats great for tourist
Any language, they all speak languages, french and German is some of the ones we found the most after English
Great video guys. Looks super nice there! Great local guide u had there.
Yes I connected with her through a friend on IG and she was very nice and helpful
You are the great people. And Masha too. Enjoy your time in Serbia. Best regards.
We really enjoyed our time there! Thank you so much for your words ☺️☺️
dude props for all the subtitles - this must be long to do man, i feel u lieles :D i used to do that.
Well, we had to translate the Spanish part for y'all! Hahahaa
What about Maria, you do Spanish subtitles for every single video plus finds translation in French and Turkish?
Lol 🤣🤣
Just kidding, putting them in the video was more tidious than when I do subtitles, I know cause I was translating for him lol 😆
Glad that you like it
Come more often bro
Thank you! We will be back to do a road trip so we can go to Novi sad and Tara national park
DRAGO MI JE that you liked my Belgrad ( White City... The first city was built of limestone, hence it's name Beograd... Beo-white, grad-city)
Yes such a beautiful story! So happy you have liked all our videos so far. We want to make sure we help people come to Belgrade by showing the reality of this awesome city
So if we have your approval, then it's good for us!
More people need to come to Serbia! A true hidden gem
@@mariaandbryan Thank you. I only can say that you are a wonderful couple. Charming, eloquent, very high social interactions. That is why your vids so good. 👋❤️
Thank you so so much! We have learned a lot from all of you!
Very informative guys, love that you included Masa in your video, it was very interesting hearing it from her perspective! Love that the architecture of the buildings are mixed throughout town.
Thank you Tia and Andy, she was def a rock star.
Yes the questions and how they asked the questions, and being so tall and serious, it was intimidating a bit for sure.
Nice video, I love it, thanks for your sharing :)
Thank you!
So important to learn from early on... We both didn't start learning other languages until middle school.
Lieles got some languages in school but never was able to speak any of them. İ think their education system in Serbia when it comes to language is very high and def higher than the US or Spain
İ started learning languages at a early age but it was all private academies so i was lucky, and yet look at my accent lol
Eclectic is definitely the perfect word to describe all that different architecture. That's really cool it doesn't remind you of any other spot.
Yes it's very unique 🙂
YES.. It's very important to know a few phrases when going to a new country, especially when English isn't the first language. But the most important phrase is.. Where is the bathroom? LOLOL!! OMG.. at 9:57 we think the guy sitting behind Lieles in the chair is fully nude??? LOLOL!!! We are all about being free and not wearing clothes if we don't have to!! LOL. Great video and love you guys to the mother effin' moon and safe travels!
Hahaha he was wearing some nude swimsuit hahaha
Yes where's the bathroom and can I have a beer hahahaha
Thank you girls for your unconditional love! Muah! To the effin' moon and back!
Very glad that they opened up to you all and welcomed you in, for sure makes us want to come to Belgrade and visit now.
Yes really nice, different dynamic than Turkey though but very welcoming as well.
Really cool you got the interview. Really puts everything in perspective.
Yes, and Masa is awesome
That lit castle at night is stunning, love the drone shot!
You will see it daytime next video ☺️
That "lit castle" is Belgrade fortress in Kalemegdan park, built to prevent Otoman Turks to invade Belgrade! It is even more beautyful in day time...
How on earth did you manage to find a hawk un the middle of the city?!!!???!!!
I know they nest in tall buildings like Genex..., but at a table in a coffee shop??!!!
😂😂😂😁😁😁
We were Soo lucky!! We couldn't believe it either!! It was awesome
Very beautiful architecture indeed. Sad to think about the historical things lost and destroyed in wars
Yes so many wars here in belgrade 😞
The architecture is a mixture. The buildings are huge with a mix of old and new. Those are great drone shots.
Thank you Carl! Next video has more drone shots ! Stay tuned
Great video guys, I enjoyed watching it...As born and raised Belgrader, now living abroad though, I have to say that I am very pleased with how you felt about visiting Serbia and Belgrade...Hopefully you guys will come back again there...Cheers.
And this comment made us extremely happy !
Where are you living now?
We def want to go back and do a road trip to get to experience smaller towns and more traditional food.
When was the last time you went there?
Getting to know and interacting with locals has to be the best way to experience a new place
100% that's what we love the most and miss when we don't get to do it
Love this long video! Glad u guys had great time in belgrade
Thank you! We surely did! Such a hidden gem
Fascinating to hear about the people at first hand from a local, a smile doesn't cost a penny, so smiles all round in our book😀😀😀👍
Yes, a smile can take you places! The world needs to smile more
You have great content. Thank you for the subtitles too!
Well thank you so much! Truly appreciated 🤗
Do you live in Florida?
Shhhhhh Belgrade is a hidden gem away from mass tourism, don't spread the news 😂
Hahaha got it! But hey let some people come so they can spend some money!! Haahha
Belgrade is awesome!
You guys took me back home watching your videos...even tho I'm far away
THANK YOU FOR THAT❤❤❤
Where are you at? Happy you enjoyed it! We had a great time in Belgrade
Thanks for promoting my country 😊🙏
Our pleasure! We are back since the last week of August so more videos of Serbia coming soon! We love it here!
Big plus as a traveler that English is widely spoken in Belgrade
Hey,thank you for this nice promotion. :)
Great coverage of Belgrade! Keep it up, you are real deal.
Thanks a lot!
It means a lot to read your comment
Really well done,thank you
Glad you liked it!
You guys are dope. Great video!
Thank you so much!!!
Happy you liked it!! ☺️
It is hard to describe, but NYC is more of a feeling (to us)
But yes Belgrade is incredibly beautiful and like nothing we have seen before
@@mariaandbryan Sure, no comparesment for history and eclectic architecture...I was referring to same "..state of mind..".
@@shara-la8629 yes for sure ☺️
You guys are so Charismatic i am surprised you dont have more subs
Awww thank you so much! We actually just got 3000 on Monday and we got spike throughout the week. We are very happy and thankful!
@@mariaandbryan Nice! i hope to see even more as your channel groves!
Thank you so so much!!! It means the world to us
That mix of architecture is really interesting!
Quite indeed and the Yugoslavian buildings are so impacting. I mean I grew up watching the wars on this side of the world, so it was like closing my eyes and be able to recreate some of those images I saw on TV. It's insane
Que buen reportaje, sois geniales en vuestras presentaciones y las experiencias que aportais .... ase aguila es maravillosal!!!. Vuestra amiga genial hablando español
Si Masa habla genial castellano.
Muchas gracias M Carmen !
Super ste
Hvala lepo, dodjite nam opet
Vratićemo se uskoro. Zaista smo uživali u vremenu provedenom tamo i nadamo se da ćemo upoznati još domaćih. Hvala
This was really nice. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Belgrade truly shocked us in a great way
So glad you had a great time in Belgrade!
We did. Pretty amazing and different city
Something you guys did about the colour grading in this video different from the others? Love the orange-y and turquoise, and a little faded colour grading here!
Yes Lieles used a new technique. I'll have him sharing with you guys through message
The best part of travel is making local friends.
Absolutely agree
Mamuchos out!😁❤️ Great video
🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for watching us

A que suena a GOT?
