I haven't checked all the comments to see whether someone has already pointed this out, but our friend Tony is forgetting an important step--one that is pointed out in the instructions that come with this extractor set (whether it is Matco, Rigid or Snap On / Blue Point). His demonstration in this video is a very simple case. Success with most real-world jobs, especially where stripped fasteners embedded in hardwood or engine blocks are concerned, depends on drilling a pilot hole through the fastener before drilling a hole for the extractor one will hammer into it. These are referred to in the chart on the plastic lid as a "centering drill" and "enlarging drill." The chart shows which centering bit, which enlarging bit and which extractor to use for a given screw diameter, but the procedure is obvious once you grasp the importance of drilling an initial centering hole in the fastener. The bit that is ultimately used to make the hole for the extractor would be far more likely to stray off the axis of the fastener if it didn't have the smaller-diameter hole to follow. In real-world situations you often have to drill deeply into if not completely through the length of a fastener, and that will be harder to do accurately if you haven't drilled a pilot hole. The great advantage of this type of extractor is that it allows the possibility of applying force to more or less the whole length of a stripped fastener, and not just to the topmost portion, but to get that advantage you have to drill very accurately down into the fastener, thereby giving the extractor plenty of surface to grab onto while significantly weakening the fastener at the same time. What Tony shows us in the video could be accomplished with a simple easy-out that just grasps the head of a fastener. He doesn't really show what this type of extractor is capable of doing. It is not designed for your average wood screws. It is designed for lag bolts and machine-threaded bolts between 1/4" and 1/2" in diameter.

Awesome video Tony. I've never seen that style extractor set before, I like that it comes with alignment tools. Extractors are the type of tool that if it works to get you out of a jam even once then it was well worth buying. This set is definitely on my list now. This is the best type I have personally ever used. Like all extractors you REALLY don't want to break one off or you will be drilling for hours unless you have carbide drill bits. $$$$$!

I paid 165 all in in canada it was here in a day basically threw Amazon ridged best set out ther I fixed to starter bolts in a half hour I also bought some left hand drill bits they may have helped a bit also

I have the actual RIGID set i bought from amazon some years ago. was always impressed with it. no worse feeling thing breaking a bolt or screw. but a way better feeling getting it out effortlessly

That Ridgid set is a really good set. I went with the Blue Point version for ease of warranty, but everyone seems to rebrand it.
Ya I think if it's going to be used fairly often I would go with one that would make warranty alot easier as well. Good choice 👌

Your extractor bits in the countersunk screw. Work well, but how did you know, How deep to dill? How much of a hassle is it to exercise the warranty process? Again thank you
Drilling is actually fairly easy. Just consider the size of the head your drilling into and just Guage how deep you can go. Now the warranty is a good question. I haven't attempted it. And I'm sure it depends bc most would consider something like this a consumable item. But some dealers are cool. I would have to try

How often to bolts shear off above the hole? In my experiences not often. That would kind of make the drill guides unusable in those situations.

Ridgid does warranty tools, but it does take a little while in my experience. Granted it was a pipe wrench in my case and I had to mail the broken one to them first. Maybe they’d just require a picture if you break the extractor.
Oh ok good to know. That's kind of annoying they require you to mail in the broken item. But in some cases understandable. Thanks for sharing

Yes since the extractor is straight cut it works both directions

I just ordered the ridgid set if you are in canada Amazon sell it threw a tool company in Utah I believe it Utah any way it’s 162and change we don’t have a Matco truck in area so I need it so it’s only money I’ll buy a Irwin set at brofasco fasteners with the left hand bit s and I can pick up the Irwin for like 35 dollars worth it just for the left handed bits I have 2 starter bolts that sheard off of my Chevy hope they come this week the worst about ordering in states and I think ther only worth about 5-0 dollars so they rob us Canadians why Home Depot can don’t got it is beyond me they Cary it in the us oh well hope they work from what I see ther about the best extractors out ther

Really? I have used this thing alot and it has worked great. It's not really for huge bolts. More for small screws to medium sized bolts.
@@TonyTheTechnician Crazy, I got mine from Snappy so I figure it the same one. Mine NEVER bites into the bolt and if it does then the shaft bends.
@@michaelstjohn6086 that is crazy. I could kind of see that with some of the smaller ones for sure but I usually try to tap them in fairly soft. Would snap on warranty that for you?
