  • This video briefly reviews the career of Earl Palmer, the legendary New Orleans drummer who passed away last year. It is an excerpt from a DVD that I edited for Bay Area boogie-woogie pianist Mitch Woods, who hired New Orleans musicians from various Fats Domino bands to record with him in the Crescent City in 2000. He returned from New Orleans with 15 hours of video which we whittled down to a 2:15 DVD.
From the CD/DVD "Big Easy Boogie" by Mitch Woods.
Earl Palmer played on countless 50's rock' n roll hits for Little Richard, Ray Charles and Fats Domino - as well as many all-time classics like Sam Cook's "Shake" and "Twistin' the Night Away", the Righteous Brothers' "You Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", Richie Valen's "LaBamba", Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" - as well as TV themes from "77 Sunset Strip" to "the Brady Bunch" - and film scores for Quincy Jones.
Watch and listen, you won't believe this career.

What a great tribute to Earl. I knew Earl and worked with him many times in L.A. in the 1970's. He was a great guy and so much fun. RIP, Earl.

One of the BEST. Like many musicians, it's only the music that ever counted.
They're coming back in HIS file. GOD BLESS!!!!!!!!!!

Earl, the originator, the genius, the man behind the B-A-C-K-B-E-A-T. Do I need say more? He was one helluva musician...and I think he played on every record you have in your collection, anyway until he passed away. Awesome Earl. If I believed in karma and another life, I wish I could re-born in NO and just get a little gist of his drumming

As a drummer my style was shaped for sure by Mr.Palmer.... "The Anchor" would have been the best name for Earl. He kept everything in place.

Earl Palmer never supported the name "Wrecking Crew". That was a name Hal Blaine made up in the early 90s and then got a booked published of the same.

I think Earl played on more hits though. His move to LA was signalled when producers over there had been trying to recreate the NO sound in their studios with two drummers. When they discovered it was only one... The rest is history.

The main reason Earl Palmer has overpassed Hal Blaine as the most recorded drummer in music history was because Palmer recorded sessions for film and television scores, and Hal Blaine didn't
