- Learn how to tie a tent guy line easily, with two simple knots (or with one knot and the plastic slider).
If you'd like to also watch step-by-step tutorials for how to tie the knots featured in this video, we have that on our channel as well. Check out the below videos:

I (Jon - the guy in the video) originally learned these knots years ago in Boy Scouts (I'm an Eagle Scout), and I'm excited to be able to share them with you. I love knot tying and outdoor skills, and so I also made a playlist of other knot tutorials on my channel. We'll also be covering outdoor skills like campfire cooking, orienteering, and more.
If any of that strikes your fancy, then I invite you to subscribe to our channel. We're planning to post 1-2 new videos every week, and ultimately, I hope for this channel to become THE go-to resource on RUclips for learning practical outdoor skills.
I also intend to reply (or react) to every comment on the channel. So say hi! I'd be glad to meet you. And feel free to also suggest ideas for future videos. We're planning as we go so I'd be glad to hear it!
I am going on my first solo camping trip next week. I successfully set up my brand new tent last night in my backyard, but could not figure out how to do the guylines. This was so helpful!
If I watched this video before I went camping I would have saved myself about an hour and a tantrum 😂 thanks a bunch. Much simpler than the bs I was trying to do
You are the only one that made this make sense by comparing it side by side with a topline hitch. Thank you very much!
tautline hitch* 🙂.. but yes, I agree!
I'm new to camping, thank you! I never knew how to use those guy lines that came with my tent. Fortunately staking it down was sufficient on my last camping trip. But I'll guy it out this time just because now I know how. Lol.
i'm a big fan of a truckers hitch with an alpine butterfly
Thanks a million ... as a first-timer I had no idea what to make of it.
Nice one mate didn't have a clue how to do it thanks pal 👍🇬🇧
Thank you! I was so nervous about getting this right and you made it very helpful!

Going camping next month really kneeded to learn some knots thank you for your easy to follow demonstration. Quality video thanks for sharing keep up the good work brother 👍
Was “kneeded” a pun?
A coloured guy line would have been easier to see. I appreciate the video. Thank you.
Very informative
Have you ever had any issues using the taut line hitch with tent stakes that aren't as smooth, like the hex type stakes with groves instead of the Shepard hook type ones u have in your video?
Thanks
Love you videos, keep them coming for all of us!
Man, I think I didn't buy a guy line. Dang thing was beside the tent section so I guess it was the line. I bought a paracord. Is it still possible to use it as a guy line?
How long should the guyline be ?
Black rope, fully extended arms over dark grass, amazing choices for an instruction video
Hm, was hoping more for placement of guy lines. Do you have a video for that?
No, sorry. I haven’t made one on that yet. To some extent, you can use the position of the guy line loops (that are attached to the tent) as a guide. If you see the loop, you can run a guy line there. And some tents even have the guy lines pre attached. I hope that helps as a starting point!
I suppose you 5hink I have been doing it wrong for the last 55 years!
Well, if when you wake up and your shelter is still in place then I'd say you sir, are doing it properly.
You need to zoom in closer with your knots
Couldn’t see the knots will enough to be useful
1:42. I get stuck here.
I feel dumb that I did it another way 🤣
I still dont understand what the guy lines are for. I need some live visualization to realize its purpose.
They are to keep your tent from deforming/blowing away in high winds/storms. Depending on your tent, some of the lower guy lines expand areas of your rain fly for ventilation and better water resistance by pulling the fly away from the inner tent.
For 60 plus years I always thought the rabbit came out of the hole, around the tree, back in the hole again.
Now you're telling me the rabbit goes in the hole, around the roots, and comes back up out of the hole?
Thanks for wasting my time
You say over but looks like under, confused 🫤
