I have worked from home for the past 13 years and made a conscious decision when I started this job to do all the things you have suggested here. Get dressed every day, in something nice, comfortable but well put together. Wear jewellery, perfume and a little make up. It goes a huge way to making you feel professional and in the work zone. I am now looking forward to retirement and will continue to dress for the day whether it’s to go for a walk meet friends or simply potter about my home. It really helps mind, body and mood.

Agreed! I have been telecommuting since 2001. I have learned I work best when I dress for work- some days it’s just jeans, white t- shirt and blazer, and Converse.

Having my morning devotions with prayer and scripture reading never ceases to uplift even though my feelings might be the opposite. It is my morning food and I am much more creative. The second is exercise, trying to include two out of cardio, stretching or core. I do agree about the jeans! I also like my jewelry. Thanks!

i really liked this video and I agree with your suggestions. The other thing I have done to avoid the "Groundhog Day" feeling is make each day have a specific purpose. So Monday is "get ready for the week" and I plan meals, get groceries, do laundry, clean up the house. Tuesday and Thursday are "creative" days", Wednesday is my "day off" etc. I'm newly retired so it was definitely a possibility that every day could just be ... relax ... and get really boring.

When one looks ‘presentable’ one feels better - important for mental health. Also these days I’m never sure if someone’s going to video call me so I need to feel that I don’t need to make excuses why I look a certain way! When I’m not doing house work, I take out my cashmere sweaters to keep me warm during these cold winter days and it gives me an uplift right away! ❤️🇨🇦

My mom has been having a terrible time being retired. She's worked like a farm mule all her life, and now she doesn't know what to do with herself. She lives in a rural area of a very small town, so things like gyms, social clubs, volunteering, senior centers, theaters, etc. are non-existent. Church and bars are the only two places where people gather around her, and she's not a patron of either. :-) :-) :-) And, she's not keen on using the internet much, so every time I try to interest her in things like starting her own book club (she's an avid reader and a former teacher) or a "girls' chat" or game night via Zoom/Facetime/Meet, or taking courses online she gets bogged down by her distaste for, and lack of experience with, the "tech" part of it. Of course, with the social distancing required by the pandemic, her isolation and sense of being rudderless has worsen. I've gifted her "counseling" and "self-help" books to guide her in reimagining and reinventing herself as a retired person, given her long-term projects to "assist" me with, helped her design a "schedule" of personal goals and tasks to accomplish daily/weekly---but she gets really excited about it, goes with the plan for a week or so, and then stops...I know it's on her to find ways to feel purposeful, and I know she should probably go to therapy to learn a "new" way of living through this new stage of life, but she won't, and I worry greatly about her...sorry, I'm blabbing. I guess your comment woke up deep-seated concerns I have about my mother. I wish I could live closer, but I'm in a different continent altogether...and to be honest, even if I were in town, I fear she wouldn't act much differently...sigh!

@@irairod5160 I'm so sorry to hear about your mom! Was her retirement planned? If people are forced to retire I think it can be very difficult. I worked as an engineer and although it was a very challenging and rewarding career, it never felt "right" for me. So I have been so happy discovering who I really want to be and the pandemic has made it even easier because all the other things I could have distracted myself have been taken away. I also live in a rural area so I do rely heavily on the internet for courses, inspiring youtube videos and just plain entertainment. If she has any interest in art I would recommend Shayda Campbell or Peter Sheeler for having nice easy videos to follow and you need minimal supplies. Jeanne Oliver also has a lot of free art videos on her site. I hope she settles into something eventually, there is such a big inner world to discover. She is lucky to have a daughter who cares about her so much!

@@katherinec3463 Thank you for your kind words. I know, in my heart, that the problem is that my mom does not know who she is apart from what she's done for others all her life. She's never allowed herself to think, "What do I want? What am I interested in? What makes me happy?" She's told me, outright, that she doesn't have any dreams or hopes for herself, no passions to pursue, nothing she wants to explore. She knew retirement was coming, yet she made no plans for her late years. Now that she feels no one needs her, it's like she wishes she could stand still and wait for the day she dies. It's BIG TIME depression, I know, but she won't admit to it or seek help. I've tried to convince her to come stay with me for an extended period of time, but she won't do it. I've faked needing her as a travel companion, for home remodeling projects, for assistance managing a home-based tutoring business I have (things that I know are of her interest, and she'd be EXCELLENT at) but she always finds an excuse not to partake. She's totally given up, and I'm crushed about it. I've even considered leaving my career and moving back where she is to see if I can infuse her with some zest for living, but I think she'd see through it and feel so guilty that it'd make things worse. Sorry to have hijacked this discussion about being chic at home...I guess I'm thinking of "home"--in its more expansive meaning--today. I truly appreciate your comforting words and the suggestion about the classes you've enjoyed. I will keep trying...and will remain attentive to, and hopeful for, my mom's wellbeing! Sending you best wishes--IR

@irairod Just to add one more voice about the struggle to find ones place in retirement there are retirement coaches. Due to the pandemic most work via video/phone. You’re definitely onto something, Audrey. 19 years ago I had a horrible accident which ended my nursing career. Along with not being able to go to work and see my peers, It also severely limited my social interactions. I knew at the beginning, that if I did not put my well-being first, I would not survive. As a human beings, we need to nurture not only our bodies but also our mind and spirit. I make a point to nurture those three parts of myself every day. Physically, by eating right, by doing what little exercises I can. Also by getting up in the morning and getting dressed. For myself, that means, in yoga pants and a favorite T-shirt or sweater, some thing that makes me feel good. I also put on my jewelry, it makes me feel joyous, because there is usually a memory attache to each piece of jewelry. It is also important to feed our minds, whether that’s reading, watching RUclips videos on style, art, or anything that stimulates your creativity. We are also spiritual beings. Some thing that taps into that part of you is essential for our daily routines. For me it’s reading my Bible and being out in nature. For some, it may be meditating or reading the Quran. What ever it is that helps you connect on a spiritual level is important to do every day. Especially first thing in the morning because it focuses you for the rest of the day. Thanks Audrey for making this vlog because without self care we are not reaching our full potential during this already difficult time. Blessings to you all.

I can confirm everything you said about feeling better physically and mentally, Audrey. I'm 57, unemployed for over a year now, covid restrictions... Every single day I dress "nice", put on makeup, do my hair, put on a necklace/earrings. I found early on that it gives me a routine, I feel "ready" (I tell myself, "just in case a delivery man comes to the door and sees me", haha) and I am less a sloth and actually get things done around the house. Maybe on the weekends I'll actually hang out in my pj's a little longer, but never all day.

All wonderful ideas which I've been doing since this began. I have depression and anxiety, and the ritual of getting dressed every day, fixing my hair and putting on makeup, has been comforting. I have a fairly small wardrobe so there isn't much to play around with, but I have several pieces of jewelry to add a different touch to my outfits. The other thing that has been helpful for me is giving myself a manicure every week (I think I'm keeping Zoya and Londontown in business!). Even though I have rather knobby, arthritic knuckles it's still nice to see pretty polish on my nails. Walking every day even in freezing temperatures has also been hugely beneficial. Thank you for all your lovely videos, Audrey, and for being honest about your own experience during this difficult time.

Kudos to all of you around the world who have been in prolonged lockdown. Can’t imagine how you do it. We have only had two very short episodes of lockdown (a few days each) here in Perth, West Australia since Jan 2020. Hardly any local cases ( nearly all our cases from returned residents in quarantine since April 2020). Life for everyone is completely normal here, except for hand washing and 1.5 metre social distancing, but we had a hard border until Xmas 2020, so almost no one got in or out of our State, including other Australians. It has kept us safe, and Covid free as a population of 2.5 million, but we do appreciate how lucky we have been, and our sympathies go out to all of you everywhere having to do it so tough. Best wishes everyone. Great video as always Audrey.

    Hi Audrey,
I get dress everyday with casual clothes. When I have classes on Zoom I wear jeans and a nice sweater or top. I also wear my jewelry to coordinate with my outfits. I read and practiced knitting and cook everyday for myself and husband. I agree with everything you said it can be so easy to stay in our sleepwear and do nothing. But, the end results can cause sloppiness and even worse depression. Every Sunday I also bake a cake and share a slice with my neighbors on the floor. Just to see their appreciation and smiles on their face makes me happy (of course with social distance and mask on). Hang in there and keep creating these beautiful videos it gives me something to look forward to. This weekend my literature class required that we watch the movie “A Roman Holliday” with Audrey Hepburn and I must say there is a striking resemblance you looking like her. Can you also talk about home decor, reading and movies recommendations? I love that water bottle where can I get one? As for this Pandemic, this to shall pass. And let’s us all hang in there and be grateful for what we have. God bless you all

I agree with everything you said and from the beginning of this pandemic, I vowed to myself not to get out of my normal routine, but create a new routine instead. When I wake up, I put on clean coordinated lounge wear I keep close to my bed, grab a cup of tea and watch the news shows as I walk up. I then do my chores around the house, take a long walk, (exercise w/ hand weights, Yoga poses) and come back to take a shower, put on full make up and if I have to go out, I am dressed for that. A few days a week, I have started to do my seasonal tax job, which also gets me dressed and is a good routine for having a destination to go to, other than CVS or the grocers. When I am not working, I like to read or do something creative or organizing like (closets, drawers, etc.) I always cook from scratch, so there is that, then an evening relaxing with husband, after that wash up, do my skin care regime and change for bed. I never stay in my PJs, not even once. Thank you Audrey for those tips, I always forget to drink my water, but I am trying to do it. It use to be so easy when I was going to the gym everyday and carrying around a water bottle. I love your pretty water bottle, maybe I need something like that to motivate me. :-)

I like your outfits more and more: still very simple and minimal but different colours and shapes. I live in the Vancouver area in Canada and spring is definitely in layering: Jacket or trench coat then cardigan or sweater then in the afternoon (in a sunny place) blouse or tee shirt....I love stripes so for me: all year long!!!

I've been working from home since I was 18 (26 now) and I've basically lived in my pajamas since I'm a huge introvert. I've never bothered fixing my hair and I don't wear make-up either. I'm starting to finally change that and trying to get into well made fancier lounge wear instead of PJ'S

Yoga definitely, getting some/any creative work done (using the "5 minute" approach a LOT lately), and, oddly, planning for feast days all help. It's wicked cold here now, but my daughter and I try to get out to hike (we are refused entry to the state that has our favorite mountains, but we have found a couple of nice hikes in our home state). The sound on your video is awesome, how do you get such perfect audio? Really enjoyed this video, thank you!

I would love it if you made a video with tips for how to wear an item that doesn't really fit with your wardrobe, but has sentimental value so you want to incorporate it. An example is heirlooms - I have a scarf that was my grandma's, but it isn't my usual colour or style.

I also like to change when I'm working from home. The mind shifting is real! and the jeans tip is excelent, but only if the weather allows it. we're in summer where I live and I can't even think of putting on a pair of jeans without sweating lol

For me, I love wearing loungewear however- it encourages me to not go outside for days! So every few days I’ll wear jeans (and a bra😆!) then I’m much more likely to go on an impulsive walk around the local park 🌷🌷
