I can't tell you how many hours I sunk into ODST Firefight back in the day. I was literally up for more than 24 hours at one point working on the VidMaster challenge for Firefight, and had a blast the entire time. After completing the Achievement, my group just decided to keep going, and ultimately only stopped because people were on the verge of passing out. God what an amazing time that was!
It's an absolute shame how Warzone Firefight turned out. I could have handled the bugs and glitches if it weren't for the way the mode fundamentally works (as you point out). I had a lot of fun with it initially, but the magic quickly wore off after a few games.
I really hope Infinite has a true, classic Firefight experience. Something that can properly emulate ODST's challenge, but also allow for Reach's level of customization (for those that want it).

I personally liked ODST Firefight best just do to the struggle and being put on the losing end of the fight. However I would like to see an element of Halo Reach Firefight added that element being able to chose what waves have what enemies and skulls, though they can keep the loadouts far away from my ideal firefight I prefer an equal start with weapons placed on the map for you, it allows for a more creative and strategic approach to the firefight as opposed to a tactical one like in Reach.

Halo Reach was definitely the pinnacle for me. Though, not necessarily because I enjoyed the vanilla "stock" version of Firefight (and its standard modes) but rather because of the sheer level of customization that you could accomplish within the editor. Using the editor, I created a "Realism" string of game modes where the AI were fairly easily killable as opposed to the bullet sponges they are in the main game (something I have always despised about Halo - combat that doesn't feel realistic/believable just pulls me right out of a game. I can accept personal shields, I can accept armor, I can weave these things into my expectations for what's going to happen if I pump a few rounds into an enemy. However, when I can fully expend a magazine or two, landing nearly every shot, and the enemy is still moving around like nothing has happened, I just get annoyed). In my game mode, the standard assault rifle can drop most grunts and jackals with a few rounds (roughly 2-4) while low-rank elites and brutes can take about twice that due to the elites shields, the brutes thick flesh and armor, etc. A full assault rifle magazine (assuming rounds on target) is really only necessary for top tier elites and brutes, as their substantial shielding and armor can deflect and absorb a good deal of punishment before piercing through. It's certainly not perfectly realistic, but it was as close as I could get.
Combining this with lowered shields for players, no health regen and very limited armor abilities, the result was a game mode that forced a more "tactical" playstyle. I/players couldn't just dilly-dally about and absorb a hail of plasma anymore. Your shields will save you from a few rounds, but they can't be relied on as some kind of invulnerability screen. Thus, the shielding was more of an "oh shit" protection, and aided the player in opening combat, taking their shots, then quickly taking cover or changing position. Weapons and combat needs to feel truly lethal, and the only real way to do that in my opinion, is to make it genuinely lethal. Bullets are not little pellets that lower a targets health bar until they fall over. They punch holes into, and occasionally through, flesh and bone, sometimes sending lead/brass fragments cascading into the body, sometimes ballooning (in the case of a hollow point) to maximize the width of the wound channel. Each bullet it designed to be lethal. Each bullet can be; I've always felt like this needs to be represented better in video games, especially with shooters but the same applies with medieval/fantasy weapons as well. No amount of blood or somber storytelling is going to help if every battle feels like a nerf gun/paintball fight.
But, that's just how I feel when playing games. The reason I loved Halo Reach's Firefight so much was because I could tailor it to fit those needs and play the way I wanted it to. That, I think, is a fantastic thing to have in a game. If Firefight were to return, I would want that freedom to return with it.

However, Installation 04 was by far my favorite map, those ODSTs you were given, arming them with amazing weapons (except rocket launchers or fuel rods, I learned that they usually kill themselves or me more frequently than they kill the Covenant), protecting them with my bubble shield and using the warthog even solo thanks to them, also, they could be very funny sometimes... I would give my life to preserveas many ODSTs as possible (wich I don't think they had a cap). That is what made Reach's firefight the best in my opinion, that little touch in Installation 04 is what made me play so much time firefight.

Hot take, but Halo Wars 2 firefight is probably my favourite in the whole series. I love the idea of building up defenses and having whole armies at your disposal to take down constant waves of varying enemies. Whereas in other firefight modes, I feel like you get punished for staying still and camping, the whole point of this one is to stay in one spot and hold the line! Anders is probably my favourite leader for that purpose, just because of her ability that makes hordes of sentinals spawn whenever a Kodiak or Siege turrest fires. My only gripe is that I wish there were more maps for it.

I loved firefight! For quite a few years, my brother and I did not have any wifi to connect the Xbox to the internet. We also have very few games, so something as re-playable as Halo Reach firefight was amazing. We must have racked up many hundreds of hours on Reaches firefight. We played plenty of ODST firefight too, but since Reach firefight was more customizable, we mostly stuck to Reach. That is pretty much why I think Reach and ODST are the best Halo games, maybe if we had the ability to play online, I would think differently and favor 3 over Reach and ODST.

I never really thought about how well tower-defense modes actually fit into TONS of games, without feeling far removed or dominant. Mechanics that are shallow on their own could make a great addition to a gamemode like firefight, definitely wouldn't mind something like the ability to place auto-turrets and choose their type etc. etc., just make it seamless and design them around affecting the basic gameplay we like favorably.

Halo Reach was my very first game in the series, so I played a lot of Firefight. It probably is the reason why I have so many hours in this game and why I am Lt. Colonel on my offline account. So I am pretty happy that it will be in the MCC, something that you can't say of ODST.
But I hope that we will see it coming to the MCC when it finally arrives on PC and some modders do the work. Maybe, we'll even see the originally planned Firefight mode in Halo 3 (maybe even with Flood as enemies).
I dearly hope it makes a return in Halo Infinite. And one thing that would be very cool is if we can create our own Firefight maps with Forge.
It would give the mode even more replayability than it already has.

I like Halo Reach Firefight due to the customization. But the PC mods of Halo Custom Edition/Vista. Halo 3 ODST though was definitely a challenge. Me and a few friends... been offline for 8 years. now, we worked together to get the vidmaster challenge for ODST Firefight complete. One of the the things that really inspired firefight was from Halo Custom Edition/Halo 2 Vista's Bot Battles. I remember before firefight people always asked for something like this but more official ruclips.net/video/nxOkgWihmRw/видео.html Funny to think that before Firefight was introduced, the idea was so hated upon as much as Battle Royale. "If you want to play against bots in multiplayer, go play Star Wars Battlefront. Bots in a matchmaking online environment are not welcomed into Halo." I shit you not, people bitched about such nonsense. Now its "if you like battle royale. Go play fortnite". Elitist/Gatekeeping lol never changes. Always getting worked up over a game mode.

Call it nostalgia-goggles if you'd like, my favorite firefight experience was in ODST. I remember very fondly the memories of my buddies and I going over to each other's houses and staying up way longer than we were supposed to just trying to get all of the achievements in our favorite Halo games. ODST just so happened to be the very first game that I ever got 100% in. This at the time included the illustrious VidMaster Challenge: Endure! As many may know this achievement is quite difficult to get and requires 4 people to sit down for at least 3 hours and grind those waves and sets out until you reach and pass Set 4. I honestly don't remember how many times we tried and failed to get past set 2 and would eventually fall short due to bedtimes, homework procrastination, having to go and eat dinner, or just simple bad luck. I can assure you there were a lot though. Low and behold on February 5, 2011 we actually manage to get ourselves that shiny new 25 gamerscore. It might not sound like much now but back then it was a badge of pride to me and my boys. We did it and that was that. Shortly after i got the rest of the achievements needed to 100% the game and loved every minute of it! I typically don't go for the whole completionist aspect on most games, but ODST was a welcome exception. Plus the obligatory praising of Marty O'Donnell for the music.

I also liked my own customized Hunter fight. It's tedious if you don't have that grenade launcher or run out of power weapon ammo, but I love how the laser can overpenetrate Hunters or how the sword can stun and then back slice them. Though a Hunter is OP in Oni Sword Base's lower middle tunnel with no room to dodge their melee insta kills...

I figured since we can customize the waves we should be able to forge in the maps. I would have the forge mode be similar to Halo 3's where you can only put weapons, grenades and equipment, and scenery in the maps. No walls or buildings or anything that you could do in Forge World. That would be my take on it. If they went with a full forge experience with it like forge in multiplayer I would be fine with that.

You and your friends play as a squad of elites defending a last covenant corvette or conquered earth command post, fighting endless waves of UNSC forces, comprised of marine platoons, ODST drop pods, Spartan I, II, III, or IV teams, all deployed to kill you in various vehicles too, like warthogs, tanks, and even choppers. And just like how u could play as Johnson and buck in firefight, you would be able to play as the arbiter or shipmaster in this version. Austin Noll, yes, I love it and it just the dumbasses players whom only go after the one objective instead of spreading out and go after all the objectives at once, so the team can multitask. For example, I always disliked it when the entire team go for the weakest enemy in which waste the time limit the quickest than after another other enemies afterwards when they still have full health. No! I will always go for the enemies that still have full health if my team decide to do the opposite of the logical obvious strategy to do. Yeah, I admit Halo 5: Guardians Warzone Firefight is not as good as the previous iterations, but that does not mean is the worse the out there. I been noticing that trend from your video LateNightGaming lately and therefore it is starting to annoy me quite a bit. I love your videos! I don’t waste my time ranking up my Requesition Points for the highest vehicles in that game mode; no, I spend them on the logical items that work best for the situation(s) like I would in reality. Same idea is put toward a game like Rainbow Six Siege-though I came from Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell franchise before finally trying out one of his Rainbow Six game. Basically, I came from a gaming background that was not part of the norm. I was not raise with internet... heck I did not know there were such a thing! So basically, Halo Wars 2 Terminus Firefight, but in first-person.
Never-ending waves (or you could set wave limits if you want) of Flood or Covenant or Created Enemies come at you as you fight a tug-o'-war across multiple defensive zones.
Each defense zone has small terminals spread out to summon walls, turrets or reinforcements to strategic areas.
    - Choose from walls you can move through, but can't shoot through, or totally blocked walls that force the enemy to take a different route if they don't have heavy weapons to blow it up; or " kill walls" that damage anything that moves through them.
    - For Turrets, the basic, anti-infantry, anti-vehicle, or anti-air turrets; all of which are either automated, have a marine at the controls, or you can take control of them yourself.
    - Some areas allow reinforcements to be spawned in the form of marine teams, either general or specialized, or you can summon a vehicle that starts with a marine in it, like a tank or rocket hog.
You'd start with everything built for you and at the front-most defense zone, with some time to change things up a bit and pick up whatever weapons you want.
You fight until you're pushed back out of the zone and the respawn point there is deactivated. You are forced to fall back to the next zone until the wave is done and you have some time to try to recover the zone you just lost. You have to choose between picking specific turrets or walls, or just grabbing the first pick and hoping quantity will prevail over quality, either way at this point you know it's just to slow them down. This continues as you are pushed further and further back until you're at the last node. This Citadel would have the best defenses, large turrets, and cannon emplacements that are powerful, but can not be rebuilt; and lookout points with marine squads and/or artillery that can shoot down on the previous zone(s).
During the first few waves, only the basic weapons spawn in the zones, with maybe a few heavy or specialized weapons; but during later waves, you get access to more and more heavy weapons as your defense gets more dire; or you can bring in the req system from 5, it may actually work pretty well here.
Game customization options could include leaving you with just the one zone to defend, having set wave limits so you can actually win, changing the style and numbering of the waves and sets, removing req stations, allowing forge maps (Obviously), and anything else you'd expect from Halo custom games settings.

In Halo 6 I think it would be cool to have a firefight mode where you just play as a normal marine. No Sprint, no Shields, 3 shots and your dead type of deal. The objective of the game wouldn’t be to survive the entire game mode. The entire game would last 30 min to an hour, but the point is by the end of the game mode is to have a greater k:d ratio while defending an objective. Akin to an actual David v. Goliath “desperate defense” military operation.

7:11.. to be fair... that shrinking gimmick was being done with ships moving around in Halo 2 onwards for cinematic purposes long before Halo 5

Man I still think warzone was really cool, because you still could get the good stuff without paying, and even for some some reason you did not, you only needed another enemy player distracted with a boss to kill him and borrow it without conscent. The variants of vehicles and weapons made the field a total chaos, for example a WASP Hannibal is EMPed by an enemy with a plasma pistol, get highjacked and gets destroyed by an Ad Victoriam and that player gets thrashed by someone with the answer. I just love it

Halo 3: ODST's Firefight is my personal favorite. And a hope I have for future a firefight is actually for Halo Wars 3 if they ever do make it. It's basically like Terminus firefight but instead of the terminus they just try and go for your regular base. And you can expand with multiple base plots which they need to destroy. This could make for a chaotic last stand as your warthog or ghost boosts around the map, making bases until you run out of resources or the lowly scout unit finally perishes. Also in infinite, I hope it's more like ODST's. Heck, maybe just MAKE us ODSTs for that mode specifically and have the option to switch to a Spartan when you want in the menu, kinda like Reach's elite and Spartan swapping. Also bring back playable firefight elites and increase the player cap to 8 for some good 4v4+AI action
