Exciting news! I've just released my new Procreate Dreams Class alexgrigg.studio/procreate-dreams . Its a real deep dive into the most powerful features and my full workflow for creating animation.
I'm happy that finally an animator showing animation stuff in dreams. I get it they need influencers to hype this stuff, but I was worrying that it will not be useable for pipeline people.
I know! It seemed like they gave early access to only illustrators with no animation experience. Like it's cool to add some motion to illustration work, but it can obviously do waaaay more than that.
@@zowy4490Aaron Blaise also did some amazing work. He’s was a legendary Disney animator in case you are unfamiliar… I saw an interview with him saying that the tool is honestly revolutionary for frame-by-frame animators.
@Puppylyn23 if you tap the corner of the bounding box of the group you should see a new little icon that looks like a quarter circle. If you press and hold this you should be able to rotate:)
This is probably one of the best condensed-beginner-friendly tutorials I've ever watched for any drawing software! When I go to split view with procreate and I try to import layered drawing (quite simple one) it's imported as flat image and when I go to drawing mode in Dreams and go to layers it's flattened :( why? and I really need it imported with layers. Somebody suggested to paste separate layers on separate tracks but that won't work for me, I'm trying to animate window blinds and having each part of it on separate track would be just stupid, I was planning to animate it in frame by frame mode by moving each layer a bit and it would be really easy to do if I have layered image :) I tried exactly the same thing as you did but no matter which file I try to import, it's flattened to one flat image and all layers information is lost...
@@kamilrekosz7829 oh thanks! If you long hold on the drawing does it give you the option to convert tracks to layers? If it does it should then group all of the drawing into a single group with tracks inside it that you can edit
I've wanted to become an animator since I was 13, now with procreate dreams I feel like that dream will finnally be possible for me, I'm excited for the future
FINALLY a tutorial that makes sense. I have looked up about 3 videos now and none of them really showed how to make a proper animation, just kind of skimmed their way through the shortcuts that the program offers but I just wanted to learn some basic flipbook animation. THANK YOU!

Its worth mentioning that if you’re having trouble exporting your Procreate artworks into Dreams as grouped layers or turning them intro tracks, Procreate’s preferred export settings needs to be set to Procreate rather than PSD or PDF or any other options.
Procreate dreams is set to be a big hit. There have been videos appearing on YT and this is the best video I've watched on the subject so far. I'm so glad I'm subscribed to the channel. Bring us more of these tutorials please!

I'm really loving the app so far and enjoy the gesture/tap focused interface but it is, perhaps, a bit too cryptic and hyperminimalist. I say this as a minimalist UI designer. There should be a button for things like using the full-screen previewer! Anyway, thanks for the absolutely perfect tutorial for beginners :)
Alex is a great teacher. He really takes care to show you the basics of animation and how to adapt and extend any ideas you might want to try. Thanks Alex for the time you take to help us less talented souls to get better.
So I’ve been playing around with this for a while. I do animations in a number of other apps, and I’m sorry to say this is extremely non-intuitive to use. Too many unique solutions which makes it cumbersome to get into if you’re used to doing animations.

if you need to adjust your framerate after you make your file, tap the title of the document to bring up settings. FPS is the first setting under properties. Sharing because this was frustrating for me, but it's such an easy fix!
Great video, thank you so much for sharing! I had a question, I followed each of your steps carefully and made it to 6:19 of your video and unfortunately it’s not allowing me to export the file. It gets stuck on 2% and then says it failed to export. I tried multiple times and even restarted the app and my iPad and I’m still facing the same issue. Is there any way to fix this or is it a bug?
Same happens to me. I searched around and it appears to be a common problem. It might be a bug with iOS version or a specific model of iPad. Hopefully the Procreate team fixes it quickly.
Sorry might be a question for the Procreate support team. You could try making a new file, grouping all your existing animation and copying it over and then exporting?. But I dunno if that'll help
6:55 you can actually go in the settings and make it so you can select all frames with your fingers in contact mode. They hid so many things that conveniences like that get missed 😅
When I paste layered file over from procreate it gets flattened down and everything is one layer 😢 app is useless because of it for me. Do anybody have the same problem? Tried many files simple ones with layers still just flat composite is imported and don’t know why. Restarted dreams didnt help. Seems like a bug for me.
See online Handbook, i saw one YT show a tap long hold pop up menu from the track it lands in. I don’t recall which. Might have been Art in Motion, Alex Grigg, or Brookes Eggleston. Sometime in November.
I’m a complete beginner when it comes to animation. I figured Procreate Dreams would be the perfect chance to start because I already love using the drawing app. This is hands down the best tutorial I’ve watched so far. Clear instructions at a good pace.
I’ve seen a couple small tutorials but this is the only one I’ve actually truly gotten since he demonstrates what he’s talking about with the process and it’s really helpful
Doing flipbook mode can be extremely annoying if you're trying to sync audio because you can't really draw when the timeline is up, but at the same time, you cant hear the audio when in flipbook mode (which is the best method of drawing). Kind of a pain
It's one thing to be knowledgeable on something. It's another to be able to condense that knowledge into easily digestible bits for any person no matter where they are on their learning journey. Incredible job with this video; voice over, art, tutorial, and definitions all done beautifully! ♡ Keep it up!
You have no idea the amount of times I have audibly gasped while watching this video. I don’t have Procreate Dreams yet, but I plan to get it for Christmas. I’m really excited to finally be able to take my animation skills up a notch! Thank you for showing us all these cool features!
thanks for this tutorial! it’s not nearly as user friendly as procreate. i hate using gesture controls, i just want an undo button! i also noticed you’re not able to move layers in draw mode? i’m disappointed in it so far but i’m not ready to give up on it

I’m just so excited procreate has been something I’ve been using for a long time and I’m excited that they came out with this. This is going to change the way a lot of people have been in a animating and only for the price of $20 which is a great price and very affordable for a lot of people I love how procreate cares about the artist and the art. they’re changing a lot and I’m very happy that they done this. I love procreate. I love what they’re doing and I can’t wait to see what procreate dreams is going to do for a whole lot of creative an amazing people

If you saved the vector as a layered PSD and imported to Dreams from that, or via Procreate, and then set anchors in Dreams for your rigging attachment points.. yeah!
this app is a piece of shit to work with, it is not simple at all. The learning curve is so annoying, shit just HAPPENS. Then I need to figure out what the hell happened. But then I cant figure out what I did, so I need to just start over and pray I don't do that again.

Great tutorial mate. Hmm, it's a neat piece of software, but I'll admit it's not as intuitive as I was hoping. I didn't even work out how to start a new blank frame without looking it up. I think it's a bit _too_ reliant on gesture controls. I think my go-to is still Rough Animator. If that had motion keyframing, it would be a fantastic tool.
I'm a (mostly) digital artist who's been wanting to get into animation for aaages and your channel is honestly such a lifesaver. It's made the whole art form seem so much more approachable to me, so thank you!! 💗
Thanks Alex. I'm unable to export the video and I could see that many people are facing this issue. Also, I just wanted to know if double tap toggle from pen to eraser and back is removed in Procreate Dreams.
Disappointed that it only works with apple pen! (grouping) I have a different version of the pen and unfortunately cannot group drawings together. I was so excited for this feature and I think procreate is missing out on not allowing for the use without it 😢
Trying to find a video that shows something fundamental to animation. Keyframes, breakdowns. Looks like you can retime a frame so that’s encouraging. But it all looks like straight ahead animation.
This is very very cool. Only thing they need to solve for is having to change the ease for every individual transform option. That seems a little tedious. They should just add an option to change all.
9:523:08 The biggest problem with this video and others promoting procreate dreams is they are talking up the product as if you can fully animate within Procreate dreams and skipping over the fact you cannot truly animate within procreate dreams alone. The brushes and layers in drawing mode do not function as effectively nor at the same level in Procreate Dreams which is why you are having to import images.
Hi I'm importing images because this is a short class on using the app, not on how to paint. It's true that procreate has advantages to image creation at the moment but it'll catch up.
Thanks, Alex. This is helpful to see since Dreams has some limitations still. I was excited for Dreams' release and when I finally started exploring, immediately I saw certain things missing that one would think is essential for a digital art software such as the lasso tool. I don't understand how that wasn't included on release since it's such a "basic" thing to have. There are other software that are developed by smaller groups or even by one person and that already provides these essentials. I still like Dreams and I want to use it as my main animation software, but above is my main criticism towards Procreate's developers.
This tutorial is so so helpful!! The way you spoke through all the features and the order that you did made me feel like I learnt so much in such little time. I knew the app had lots of potential but I had no clue where to start until this tutorial
When you group frames, is there a way to stretch them all at once so that all frames stay on screen for like 2secs instead of 1?? Doing it one by one is WHOOF
you can select them all with the Edit Timeline mode and then drag their endpoint. Unfortunately this doesnt work if they're all on the track running into each other.
Is there an easier way to change the timing on each frame from 1’s to 2’s without moving each frame individually? It would be so much easier if everything just slid to the right when extending the frame
You'll need to do it manually but there is a gesture trick to help- on the timeline, you hold the edge of the frame you want to extend, then hold down a second finger on the timeline. At this point you can extend that frame you've selected and it wont run into the following frame.
Oh so it's like Flipaclip but more upgraded and has too many settings for drawing I've been animating for 5 years but I'm getting nowhere. My animations improved yes, but what if with this app, I'll never get the right angle and I'll mess this up?
can you make a layer with just lines and make another layer with the color fillings but set the lines layers as reference (just like Procreate) and make the color drop for easy color filling?
😢 no Pen setting, it's what I say since I download it... They made us thint it's like drawing in procreate, but absolutely not, feel huge disappointement... Hope the updates will solve it..

This looks like a really fun animation program but I'm a little apprehensive at the Timeline not being keyframe based. I don't know about other people but stretching frames out to play for custom lengths of time rather than for a certain amount of frames seems like it will be limiting if you don't want to animate on every frame. Is there a way to change the timeline to be more traditionally frame based rather than time based?
@@AlexGriggAnimation sorry to be unclear. I more meant the way that Animate does it where you start an animation by animating maybe every 12 frames, then go back and do frames 5 and 9 and fill it in that way. Personally I find animations come out less janky when you’re able to use that workflow and most professional studios, as far as I know , usually work like that rather than the Procreate flip book approach. @@vraisairs9201 oh yeh that's how I usually work too (I have a whole class on it!). There are ways to achieve that in dreams currently but it's not as streamlined but hopefully that evolves over time.

Procreate makes a straight line and perfect circle but dreams don't. Is that a huge roadblock for anyone else?
Hi Dwight! Yes those features would be awesome. Currently they are at the top of Procreate's public road map so hopefully we'll see them soon :)

I’m just so excited procreate has been something I’ve been using for a long time and I’m excited that they came out with this. This is going to change the way a lot of people have been in a animating and only for the price of $20 which is a great price and very affordable for a lot of people I love how procreate cares about the artist and the art. they’re changing a lot and I’m very happy that they done this. I love procreate. I love what they’re doing and I can’t wait to see what procreate dreams is going to do for a whole lot of creative an amazing people

I wonder if you can import a vector character from Adobe Illustrator and do the rigging and animation in P. Dreams🤔
If you saved the vector as a layered PSD and imported to Dreams from that, or via Procreate, and then set anchors in Dreams for your rigging attachment points.. yeah!
@@tovermoran4360 Sounds good. Key is that it must be a file format that isn’t flattened = equal layers retained seaparately in the saved file
this app is a piece of shit to work with, it is not simple at all. The learning curve is so annoying, shit just HAPPENS. Then I need to figure out what the hell happened. But then I cant figure out what I did, so I need to just start over and pray I don't do that again.
This is the best intro to the app I’ve seen. Obviously that’s subjective but I think it’s simple, fun, informative, easy to follow! Thanks man. I appreciate your work here.

Hmm, it's a neat piece of software, but I'll admit it's not as intuitive as I was hoping. I didn't even work out how to start a new blank frame without looking it up. I think it's a bit _too_ reliant on gesture controls. I think my go-to is still Rough Animator. If that had motion keyframing, it would be a fantastic tool.
The master returns with basically the best tutorials out there.
Whenever i import a procreate file like the way you did, it just imports the image, not the file.

Thanks Alex. I'm unable to export the video and I could see that many people are facing this issue. Also, I just wanted to know if double tap toggle from pen to eraser and back is removed in Procreate Dreams.
I was just gonna comment this...I can't export anything right now! It just freezes on 9%
Disappointed that it only works with apple pen! (grouping) I have a different version of the pen and unfortunately cannot group drawings together. I was so excited for this feature and I think procreate is missing out on not allowing for the use without it 😢
you can actually head in to the document preferences and turn on "Edit Timeline with finger" and you wont need the Apple pencil :)

Good question. Draw will start us in draw in draw mode, empty will just start with an empty scene. There's not a huge difference

Trying to find a video that shows something fundamental to animation. Keyframes, breakdowns. Looks like you can retime a frame so that’s encouraging. But it all looks like straight ahead animation.

This is very very cool. Only thing they need to solve for is having to change the ease for every individual transform option. That seems a little tedious. They should just add an option to change all.

9:52 3:08 The biggest problem with this video and others promoting procreate dreams is they are talking up the product as if you can fully animate within Procreate dreams and skipping over the fact you cannot truly animate within procreate dreams alone. The brushes and layers in drawing mode do not function as effectively nor at the same level in Procreate Dreams which is why you are having to import images.
Hi I'm importing images because this is a short class on using the app, not on how to paint. It's true that procreate has advantages to image creation at the moment but it'll catch up.
Its so sad, to wait for the release of the App and see already all the tutorials.

I was excited for Dreams' release and when I finally started exploring, immediately I saw certain things missing that one would think is essential for a digital art software such as the lasso tool. I don't understand how that wasn't included on release since it's such a "basic" thing to have. There are other software that are developed by smaller groups or even by one person and that already provides these essentials.
I still like Dreams and I want to use it as my main animation software, but above is my main criticism towards Procreate's developers.

When you group frames, is there a way to stretch them all at once so that all frames stay on screen for like 2secs instead of 1?? Doing it one by one is WHOOF

you can select them all with the Edit Timeline mode and then drag their endpoint. Unfortunately this doesnt work if they're all on the track running into each other.

Is there an easier way to change the timing on each frame from 1’s to 2’s without moving each frame individually? It would be so much easier if everything just slid to the right when extending the frame
You'll need to do it manually but there is a gesture trick to help- on the timeline, you hold the edge of the frame you want to extend, then hold down a second finger on the timeline. At this point you can extend that frame you've selected and it wont run into the following frame.

can you make a layer with just lines and make another layer with the color fillings but set the lines layers as reference (just like Procreate) and make the color drop for easy color filling?
Can you add pivots? For rotation animation?
You can change the anchor point of your drawing and of groups. So you can group things to have multiple different rotation points

😢 no Pen setting, it's what I say since I download it... They made us thint it's like drawing in procreate, but absolutely not, feel huge disappointement... Hope the updates will solve it..

7:12 When I resize and reposition the group it's ok. But why when I ungroup the group the image goes back to its previous position?

On wide screen I’m only given two choices, 720 and 1080. Now I’m convinced I don’t have the complete app.

This looks like a really fun animation program but I'm a little apprehensive at the Timeline not being keyframe based. I don't know about other people but stretching frames out to play for custom lengths of time rather than for a certain amount of frames seems like it will be limiting if you don't want to animate on every frame. Is there a way to change the timeline to be more traditionally frame based rather than time based?
Do you mean keyframes with graphs and automatic inbetweening? There is plenty of that in procreate dreams, i just start with frame by frame though
@@AlexGriggAnimation sorry to be unclear. I more meant the way that Animate does it where you start an animation by animating maybe every 12 frames, then go back and do frames 5 and 9 and fill it in that way. Personally I find animations come out less janky when you’re able to use that workflow and most professional studios, as far as I know , usually work like that rather than the Procreate flip book approach.

@@vraisairs9201 oh yeh that's how I usually work too (I have a whole class on it!). There are ways to achieve that in dreams currently but it's not as streamlined but hopefully that evolves over time.
