I’m glad cam referenced flattening the pan. It’s old school, but I’ve watched my ole man straighten out untold numbers of them over the years, so that’s where I learned it.

I had a leak on a new spectre chrome pan with a Moroso rubber steel core gasket. Pulled the pan back off to the bench and re-flattened the flange (not flat as it should be on one corner due to shipping damage). Went with studs, snugged her up and no leakes since. Do not over tighten the bolts or nuts, just nice and snug. Run a couple of heat cycles and recheck the bolts or nuts.

Great video! Found out the hard way to align the poppets when installing the valve body because if you dont on a C6 you lose your kickdown.

Very cool to see how straight forward some of these repairs are. Definitely easier with a lift!
My only recommendation is to preclean the transmission exterior with a degreaser before starting the repair. Our old shop teacher would have us drive to a self-serve carwash and clean it there. They have hot water and oil/water seperators, so no mess on your driveway.

Right RLTango! Cam was spraying something on it under there and no safety glasses. Like the band adjustment and locking nut on all the dirt oil and crud built up on it. Doooooh!

I'm an FMX Fan, I kept roasting C4s on my ole Fords... But my 1971 Galaxie500 W/a built 351W had an FMX that could take the abuse :) But I was the Guy who pull automatic trannies and swapped it out for a 4 speed.
Fun Fact: I used to get a full C4 rebuild kit for $65 bucks that also included clutches and steels :) $75 bucks for the C6 kit! OH... The Good Ole Days! Right!

Useful, informative video from you as usual. This past winter, I was tired of the leaks from the 77k-mile C4 in the '68 Cougar, so I had Greenville (SC) Transmission Clinic overhaul it. After the rebuild, I had to bring it back twice, first was a leak only in reverse, and second was a bad modulator, sucking transmission fluid into the intake and burning it out the exhaust. We completed the Hot Rod Power Tour in the car in June, no problems. A few years ago at a local show in Greer, a big-time Starsky & Hutch fan had what he insisted was an original Gran Torino TV car, completely restored. I haven't seen it since. FoMoCo produced about 1001 clones in '76, but that wasn't one of them.

Hi David. You can easily go through a C-4 or C-6 yourself. They are so easy to rebuild. Transmission shops are not to be trusted, very rarely that is.

Again gents, very entertaining content... Sorry the minor refresh, didn't get the high gear, where you wanted it.. There's another C4 you say ?
I'm still advocating for that AOD that came with car, to go in there.. If it worked out, I'd be the bees knees with at 3.50 rear gear.. The 1st gear in the AOD, is deeper the one in the C4's.. So it might just help that "tank" get out of the hole, a little better !!!

Wondering if there is also a governor issue. Sticking valves in there or a clogged screen(if it is even in there) can cause shift point problems too.

I love duraspark I use them on all my classic cars. The one thing I learned with them is you need to tee into the module ground and ground it to the intake .The ground fails were it runs through the distributor . I also like to use the blue module .My tach don't work on my torino .It also starts and runs when tach is disconnected. Not sure what someone did on the wiring.

Rockauto sells the band nuts, with the rubber seal on them. Those are cheap and then don’t have to deal with rtv. Also, when replacing those shift shaft seals, what considerations are there for the bore? I replaced both seals on my C4 with the kit you talked about on eBay, and still have a leak there. Any suggestions?

Cam the lock nut has a seal integrated in it, just replace it, transmission fluid will eat up that RTV.

So I guess you are 10 feet tall and bullet proof.
I couldn't help notice your absence of safety glasses.
You are mucking around with 50 year old parts and spraying a releasing agent on the bolts.
Before you have to make a trip to the ER to have your eyes flushed out, or have to wear an eye patch for the rest of your life. Get the boss to invest in a good pair of stylish safety glasses. For everyone. Don't wait for it to happen. Please lead be example.
