Our ( black women) hair is thicker, so our scalps require a lot more moisture than people with very straight and/or thin hair. The oil is fine because the hair absorbs it eventually and we do wash our braids when its needed.
It feels great! A few days into braids, our scalp starts itching like crazy, so tea tree oil or any oil and a scalp massage would feel amazing (once the braids have loosened up because that first week- whewwee! @@aqweezy Braids don't have to be super tight! You're going to the wrong stylist if it is. That's a quick way to get alopecia so please make sure you stop getting them done so tight that it make your scalp hurt.
@@PurpleFlowerwork This is actually a common misconception! Afro textured hair is not thicker at all. In fact, you can have fine or coarse afro hair. For example, I have fine afro hair which means my individual hair strands are thinner and more fragile so I have to be extra careful when handling my hair or it breaks and snaps. The reason why we need oils and moisture regularly is because our hair is so curly/Coily that the oil our skin(scalp) produces doesn't transfer around and down the hair strands easily. As a result, we have to constantly moisturise and oil our hair and scalp ourselves to prevent extreme dryness and breakage. It is also the reason why we don't need to wash our hair as often of Europeans do because constantly washing it increases dryness and chances of breakage. Water or conditioner add moisture and oil acts as a seel to lock in the moisture. The oil also provides slip which helps to prevent breakage when styling or handling the hair.
@@kazzityangel I agree, but I think the earlier comment was referring to the general texture of our hair as being relatively ‘thick’ (aka, as you described very curly/kinky) and not the actual strands of hair. But your explanation is more accurate nonetheless.
