Astrology and Magic: The Relationship Between Them

- In episode 235 astrologers Austin Coppock and Chris Brennan discuss the relationship between astrology and magic, and some of the areas where they converge and diverge.
The premise behind this discussion is that there has been a dramatic rise in the practice of astrological magic over the past couple of years, especially among the younger generations of astrologers.
This has left some astrologers like myself in a bit of an awkward position though, since I don’t practice magic, and having not investigated it much myself I don’t really have strong feelings either for or against it.
I do feel like I have indirectly promoted it on The Astrology Podcast though by having discussions about it with different practitioners that are into it, as part of my general program to recognize and talk about the many different approaches to and perspectives on astrology.
Some past instances include my early interview with Christopher Warnock in episode 16 about Astrology, Magic, and The Occult, or the discussion that I had with Austin about his new compilation of papers on astrological magic when it came out in 2018.
I don’t necessarily think that one needs to believe in or practice magic in order to practice astrology though, since the two are kind of separate things, and yet I wondered if that distinction has become blurred a bit over the past few years.
In light of that, I’d been meaning to do an episode where I could talk through some of my own reservations, while balancing them out by talking to a proponent of astrological magic. I couldn’t think of anyone better to have that discussion with than Austin, since he has become one of the principal proponents of astrological magic in modern times.
This episode was recorded in my studio in Denver in late November, towards the end of Austin and Kelly’s trip here that month to record a series of podcast episodes.
When I pitched the idea to Austin early during his visit he was enthusiastic about doing the episode, and felt like it might be good to be able to talk about some of his own reservations regarding the sudden recent popularization of astrological magic as well.
So, we decided to sit down and record it on our day off on the Sunday that week when Kelly was off in Boulder giving a workshop. The end result was a pretty compelling and I think productive discussion, where we covered a lot of ground.
Part of the purpose of the episode for me was to be able to explain where I’m at currently and air any reservations I have while talking through it with someone I respect, and then having done so I can feel better about going ahead and still doing other explorations of that topic on the podcast in the future, such as an episode on the Picatrix that I’m planning on doing with Christopher Warnock next month. I feel like I was able to do that with this episode, and I hope that it generates some other productive discussions in the future.

Yes! I got interested in astrology when I found out about medical astrology
I loved the story about "blowing yourself up." I blew myself up five years ago when I did a ritual, calling on Mars to clear out obstacles, lit a candle and within 15 minutes nearly burned down the house I was living in. Fortunately I got the fire put out just as the fire department showed up. But a day later I looked at that corner of my bedroom where the altar had been. Literally everything in that corner had been burned and cleared out. A day later I was asked by the landlord to leave. I actually got what I needed. I needed to leave that living situation because living there was an obstacle, but it was a terrifying lesson in how powerful magic is! I have another story that was as powerful, but not as deadly. The magic went the way I wanted, but had over-the-top unexpected side effects. Powerful stuff! :-/

I have had some of my own mishaps with magick too. You definitely don't want to do certain things in magick... Negative magick being one of those things. That stuff can blow up in your face if your not careful, but anyone with half a heart doesn't run around cursing people anyways. I did two rituals out of the golden dawns (actual manual):(not the one that's published with blinds). Anyways, I did two rituals to get rid of a spirit that was pestering me and halfway through the second one that calls in planetary banishing elements, I didn't finish the two end hexegrams because I live with a christian roommate. He had just got back from the store so I stopped in the middle of the ritual. Then I layed down on my bed, about 20 minutes into laying down I started to get fuzzy vision and heart palpitations and felt like I had motion sickness. I went to go get a glass of water and I could hardly walk straight like a drunkard and ai was like ohh sh%*, I need to fix this. I did a reading and the death card came up both readings... I started freaking out. Luckily my roommate left again to go back to the store, so I did both rituals again and it subsided. Their rituals are no joke and just like the manual for the GD states should be respected and never use certain aspects with it cause ut can be dangerous. Ohh and the same exact ritual broke my step fathers truck from doing it next to his truck, it fried the circuit board.
I did the same with Kali for clearing... wrecked/totaled my car 2 days later which led to a whole new life bc the decisions I had to make. I am very thankful to the divine mother to this day.
I have been studying and practicing astrology for over 25 years, and magick for 20. Personally I find that we have the paradox of both free will and destiny happening in this world. I believe it is because we have a non physical part of us that manages the destined points in our lives as well as our free will coming in to play to alter our experiences according to our choices and responses to these destined points. We can use both astrology and magick as well as other esoteric practices to assist us in knowing that which we can alter and that which we cannot. This has been my experience. Great podcast! At one point, Austin evokes the rule of three to determine whether an element of the birth chart is fated or likely or just possible. If I understood this correctly, this would be worth an episode to itself.
Austin don't worry about the mind beyond your own. Fate is about relationship with the now.

I have been living and breathing The Astrology Podcast for the last 2 months. The conversation in this one is so interesting that i replayed it two times. Fascinating stuff. ❤
Loved that this went into the free will vs fate discussion. This is a hard one. I'd always been under the impression that we had free will within limitation although after studying astrology that really made me wonder how much free will we actually have. Not much I dont think. It may feel like it but I think its largely an illusion.
While I dont think everything is pre determined and that we do have will, I think it's more like a range of choices and even then, the choices we make are largely dependent on our genetic predisposition, past experiences, what our body currently needs, the state of mind were in etc... so how free is that really? Humans are very predictable.
They say 95% of our actions are made from our subconscious mind. So that leaves 5% and I think to claim we are using our will with that 5%, we need to master both awareness and detachment.
Really enjoyed listening to your conversation. Now in over fifty years astrology and etc.
what comes to mind right now? The greatest magic I have discovered is the practice of intuition.
This magical practice bypasses linear thinking and links me at once with all practical guidance and energetic connection to Love.

Also Aluna Ash 9D came out with a bunch of multidimensional astrological tarot magic etc content in 2018-2019. Her programming on RUclips exploded an entire audience...I’m personally way more Interesred in astrological magic since then. Fabulous program! A really mystic academical and yet practical approach to both, magic and astrology, and what the different schools of mysticism offer us views and interpretation of our cosmology, and our part inside what seems to be a patterned system, that can be interpreted to anticipate certain events and sail them more victoriously.

I bought a psychic card reading at a fair and she told me some real info and then said that a family had cursed me and that I needed to give her $80 to fix. I walked away but I am not gonna lie it kinda stuck with me as the rest played out some things did not play out like she said. I just use my instincts to pick who I get services from now . Do you have an episode on how to use the Picatrix? I’m having such a hard time learning the principles of that text exclusively via reading. Listening to a lecture about its application would really help relieve some of the confusion.

This is an excellent episode. Thanks for this discussion. An idea for another discussion or at least something I’m wondering about: what are your thoughts on astrology from the perspective of the other planets? How would Earth affect hypothetical life on Mars or any other planet? Do you believe there’s is a cumulative effect from all celestial bodies on all other celestial bodies in the universe? Like, maybe we don’t necessarily feel the effects of a certain far off planet in another solar system, but the planets within our solar system do feel them, and therefore we get those residual effects through our planets and stars?
This made me just a little bit more excited about the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction...
I have sun in 9th like Austin, and I like magic, astrology, have connection with invisible helpers (orbs, Lwa?), practice I ching oracle and tai chi, probably the best tai chi existing. Those are all great tools.

Internal states are also both fated and undecided. For example - there are significations of mental ailment or depression or even suicidal thoughts in charts. And - there is also room to play.
So both are correct I believe.
And very precise observation.
IF I know myself and my limitations, I can often shift them. For me, acceptance changes the nature of almost everything. In this, I can Earn the ability to wield my free will, to mold a COcreated experience, but it does cost. It requires my making Peace with my present truth - not to mention a hard-won surge of *focus*. (Often time consuming & emotionally taxing, on my path.) Still, I'm convinced we hold the potential to "change our stars".
That said, Magick & Astrology have truly become 2 sides of 1 coin in my mind: our life force in action (sometimes full blossom) & the study of that life's experience here. Wild to hear them separated and fascinating! As always:))

To the question of fate I find it interesting what Max Heindel said...he said that "cardinal and fixed aspects indicate almost unalterable destiny."

Mercury ruled and am drawn to magic. 🧙🏼♂ I really enjoyed the talk, especially the section on drawbacks and advice to work with the benefics. A couple of years ago, based on some works shared by a couple astrologers/tarot readers I've worked with, I invoked the graces of Venus through sigil work. Speaking to her as the morning star, my Beloved returned the next day. (I did not call for 'them' specifically but for more Love in my life that I feel when I am with them, Authentic and Divine). Coincidence? I thought not as I'd not had any connection with them for almost 2 years. I've been really careful in my practice since, primarily continuing to study. ✨💛💫✨

2:15:30 practicing magic without a proper school of thought... piecing together my own brand from 2002-2009 I would say it spectacularly blew up in my face and the person I am today was rebuilt from the wreckage, more comfortable to accept my fate. I rarely petition any spirit and even so, it is typically to ask they accept an offer of gratitude and consentual communion.
I'm feeling frequency is key to fate. If we are operating from a lower frequency, the affects of our chart is like the wounded level of our chart. At a different frequency, which people can be born into when our collective moves into those frequencies, then these wounds become gifts, and then Divine Attributes. At a lower frequency, I think we have lost free will. At higher frequencies we understand more of what was once hidden, and magic may even become a science, just as a phone would be magic 200 years ago. Knowledge to me is about frequency. This is when free will can be engaged. To me consciousness is a relative factor on choice and what is created. Right now the collective frequency is too low to understand this possibility and see these correlations with the celestial body movements.
I also add changing fate through actions to me is dualistic. Where if we hold gifts and Divine Natures, we are out of the dualism and we emanate our life from within. To me the dip into this dualistic light/dark world is training to understand the results of our creations if unchecked. They only way to truly appreciate what can happen when our full creative emanation is released without pure intention, is to live it. Which is what we are growing up through at the moment.
Love the podcast and the Series in general. I apologize if this has been brought up before but Austin states that Crowley's idea of Will was contradictory to the concept of Astrology. My understanding of what Crowley meant was what he referred to as the True Will of a being, that which followed along with who each person was truly at their core, which might or might not be in accordance to what they wanted or willed in any given moment. It seems to me that the birth chart may be one of the truest, if not the truest indicators of what one's True Will is (in the Crowleyan sense)
As a gemstone carver this is a little concerning... should I be casting charts before I carve a stone? I downloaded a copy of the Picatrix, I'm going to do one and see if it works, will report back :)
Once I understood that fate and free will are the same thing, I felt liberated. Fate or karma are the consequences of our action or will. Our will is our essence (and not something we “have”). I highly recommend Vic DiCara for anything related to this topic. It’s interesting to add magic and think about how it can influence the momentum we’ve created by our actions. As long as humility and a dharma alignement intention are present I assume.
With the process described by Austin, astrological magic (magick?) seems to capture an energetic moment, as it is described in the chart of the time the object is created, and prolong that combination of energies and intensify it. Fate could predetermine this event, and the practitioner could simply be an agent of the event that has already been predicted. Meaning, the practitioner might believe themselves to act in „free will“, but in reality is just executing the predetermined process of the universe. One could also look at this as that the universe, God, whatever we want to call it is always acting out a predetermined set of events, namely fate, but we as individuals are an extension of the universe. So we don’t act independently of fate, our choices are part of fate. They are the universe itself acting according to its own will through us.

I tend to correlate strong INTENTION to direct or transmute energy with magick and use Astrology for timing as to when to perform magick.
The concept of "starseed", practice of channeling, Wiccan & witchy rituals- seems like it's gone viral in the last year- I think... people are looking for a different way of knowing, being, believing.

You're so right Chris, if only Astrology were respected in the scientific world. It would have helped pinpoint that 2020 would likely be the year for a pandemic outbreak that is especially dangerous for elderly people (as everything was in Capricorn) and could have saved thousands of lives by for example ordering lots of masks ready... Science knew a pandemic was on the way, but not when, Astrology knew that 2020 would be a terrible year...
Chris l too look forward to the day when astrology can be viewed and regarded as an honorable tool for our society to utilize!

I am an astrologer and I have been practicing “ in the broom closet for almost 20 years. I am coming out and really find “outing myself “ hard . I feel you but I will say I honestly wonder if astrology would be so great in the masses like can you imagine if insurance based your quote on that harsh Mars transit. I am good with it being weird and mystical and we can practice in chill mode.

As far as the debate on fate and free will goes I think both Porphyry and Iamblichus were right to a certain degree. The process of alchemical transmutation is an adjustment on the spectrum of any given area of life (and the individual soul as a whole). The way I had it explained to me is to think of temperature: hot and cold are just two different ends of the spectrum, and the transformation comes by adjusting the temperature to a more moderate or preferred degree. That’s why it is a transformation of led to gold rather than a leaf to gold; both of them being metals. Magic is the medium of this transmutation and we look at our natal chart to understand our predispositions so as to cultivate our strengths and mitigate the effects of our weaknesses.
I think it is also hard to wrap our heads around the idea of fate and free-will since we experience time as linear when it is in fact a circle. The future alters the past. This comes from the concept of time being the image of eternity (aeon). So who knows, maybe free-will and fate exist simultaneously and when we see our future we are only looking at the choices we make, or perhaps that is the Jupiter in Pisces of my 9th house talking. Either way, very good and thought-provoking episode.

When discussing fate and free-will I think it’s important to put it within a greater philosophical context. If our lives are scripted, either in part or from start to finish, I believe it’s necessary to then address who or what is writing the script? Has God , or a God written your life from start to finish, if so to what end? Simply to watch it all unfold for amusement? Or has a Godess written your and all lives on this earth in order to entertain her God friends? No, but
What your core view of life and the purpose of it is, must be a starting point when discussing fate and free-will.
If you prescribe to Hermetic, or Kabbalistic philosophy, as well as Vedic and Buddhist philosophy, that all have a supreme being , the All, the One , separating in order to create creation, where effectively you and what I call I, are little shreds of that being trapped and hiding from the All we once came from, and the goal , as it were , in all these traditions, is to somehow realize and reunite your consciousness with the All, through incarnation the soul , wrapped in a spirit trapped in a body where lives lived are meant as lessons or trials and tests in order to move up from reincarnation to the next phase towards reunification with the One.
In such a scenario, who is writing your script at birth, is it your soul who writes her own story , leaving some things open,
“ok , let’s see how I’ll do here, will I go with A or B” and locking up some parts of your story as unavoidable events , where the purpose is to live through them and see how you’ll handle them.
“FUGE! I always brake when that happens...now I’m gonna have to go through that shit AGAIN, damn it!”
Or is your story and trials written by a higher being ?
Or can even both be true, where you write your own script on entry,
but higher beings will throw in curveballs your soul wont even have planned for?
In short, when discussing free-will, who’s choosing?
The free-will of the old Ego (human mind) is there a deeper free-will of a soul at play above that too?
Fate, so who or what has fated your life, something all together separate from you?
Or have you before being born played a part in setting that fate up for your self?
Either and all can versions can have validity and different implications,
but I do believe it’s vital to put into context where both fate and free will
falls into the greater scheme of life to fully understand what’s implied.
Great channel this, you all have a unique and complementary style that vibes well.
If you understand magic and astrology with your heart, you know thoughts and concepts keep you from ever seeing the ultimate truth.
Are the planets conscious, can you talk to them, are they willing to interact?
Try loving your natal chart, to discover your ultimate ruler inside.
Try to understand how the solar system could be based in deception, being a solar system of the beast.
Could the real sun be black, could it be in your heart. Could that ‘sun’ out there be our love reflected back. Telling us about this place, this life and love.
The ancient ones could feel it. Somehow that ability has gone. It’s because of the beast-system, and the chatter in our minds.

We start that trip, destination hidden, but are given a map (astrology) and a GPS (magic, ritual, religion, enchanted Universe synchronicity...) to help us maneuver poor road signs, traffic congestion, and roadblocks that occur in this 3D world. Some folks never look at the map. Some folks look at the map, but never use the dynamic tools. If we are observant and proactive, perhaps the trip is less tedious, less trying. Around 42:45 Austin talks about the importance of the name after death in ancient Egypt; brings to mind how important the name is after death in Ashkenazi Jewish culture and I imagine other Jewish cultures as well.
Also, the fact that Mercury and not Saturn rules astrology may be relevant re: the fate conversation.

Hi Chris and Austin, In the Netherlands there is an astrological school, based upon theosophical assumptions. It's from the WVA, Werkgemeenschap van Astrologen, international known as the Ram-school. I work with it, as an amateur. It's developed and very wel documented, by Thierens, Knegt and Th Ram
I have some problem with the way you guys frame situations, aspects, etc. as good or bad. What do we know? In my own experience, difficult situations or situations that didn't turn out the way I would have chosen myself, turn out to be great lessons for my Self (my self related to the Universe, the greater good). In my opinion it's one of our challenges to discover the good in everything. And to make a choice for it, when we become aware of it. To me all the signs, planets, houses, aspects etc in astrology look like archetypes. They are not bad ór good. Just like a knife, or any other object, you can use it for the better or for the worse, a tool or a weapon, to create or to destroy. We as a sparkle of a universal consciousness can make a choice, as soon as we become aware.
And I don't believe in a separation between the inner and the outer world. It's effecting each other. That's where the magic is, in my view. Hermes: so above so below. I would like to add; so outside so inside. And the other way around of course. This also correlates with quantum theory.
the theosophical astrology does not blame anyone, as far as I know. It has a very beautiful paradigm that when you're born, or when something starts, the environment, or world around the newborn or the thing is part of the newborn or thing as well. So inner world and outer world are connected, they belong to eachother. In the chart you can see if the object is stronger than the subject, or the other way around.
Oddly, I listened to the beginning before and missed the mid to last half probably thinking it was about electional astrology. It is, but…
I started becoming curious of this subject in maybe 2015 or 16 because a pattern existed where really bad things happened to others who were trying to be manipulative behind the scenes. Sort of like coworkers who’d get bad reviews, somehow say it had something to do with me, then bad things would happen to them be it a car crash or some random person for no reason beating them up on their vacation. Weird stories, just noticeable and I then wondered why some got away with things and actively engaged with non astrological techniques where those said things happened but maybe not exactly how I thought they would. Backlash? Maybe, but not anything that isn’t indicated in my natal chart would deem bad, but likely things that are beneficial to whatever chart interest/dynamic I’d have.
For example, I wanted to experiment with a type of astral projection to terrorize someone I hoped ill health on. Did it work? No, but 3 months later it did. Health part, bullseye. Astral projection? No, but about 3 home care nurses in recovery quit where my mom (who is now a retired head of a hospice) had to step in until another replaced them and there was major poltergeist activity like glasses flying off tables and table moving across the room or flipping over until it calmed. The backlash would be this was during lockdown and that made my mom a religious literalist already into conspiracy theories who went off the deep end getting into David Icke literalism; that’s part of why I’m so well versed in conspiracy theories. It’s a “join the club” thing at this point. I thought it was maybe a 12th house thing while noticing an undeniable Libra quality to what was going on while Libra doesn’t have a follow through, that’s why lot of spirit in the 8th conjunct nemesis catches my attention in the natal chart directly opposite mars in libra but conjunct Venus (whispering: also conjunct Pluto). Covid, not getting into that, but it’s good for sarcastic jokes about astrology like cult conspiracy theorists who lay out a conspiracy where I’m all “sounds like me” just because I’m just a normal nobody where the conspiracy theories are just a part of a psychological mechanic to dehumanize people as a mythical enemy. Instead of say, Biden, just being a normal person who’s in an office no person could ever be capable of filling on expectation which is why the constitution is how it is; he’s a reptile or under the spell of an evil necromancer. It’s fun to make fun of that.
There may be an astrological reason behind wanting to use talisman as a magical force where that was always the plan because I don’t think you could do anything outside of the boundaries of a chart. Given, I hold a somewhat “wave collapse” view of fate where there can be multiple fates, they’re still variations of the same one just in different ways. In one fate, maybe Cobain doesn’t die but retires then reforms Nirvana with Grohl as front instead of Grohl forming the Foo Fighters. Or something.. one backlash was having to take care of the person I wished ill health on which sounds horrible considering I had to get a restraining order on them, but I had a Saturn moon conjunction transit where I was able to get my thoughts/feelings about them finally off my chest and explicitly say why I both wished them ill fate but confront buried emotions.
In trying to find that pattern I did notice (which I need to keep looking more) I don’t seem to know anyone who has had an outer planet transit with their lot of spirit personally where I think you’d have to actually know a person well enough for them to discuss what that period of time was like to find a pattern. Nemesis, that caught my attention because the vibe of libra is explainable but has a hole in logic behavior wise, but nemesis being similar to libra, but with follow through… it may not be as much about self undoing but an impact of others undoing themselves. Maybe when I go to the underworld and hades is there with my daimon and I saying “what the hell did you two do?” I’ll know exactly what he’s talking about.
Anyways, astrological magic may lie in the lots. I’m surprised that’s more popular than astrology, but that could be that my generation went out into a decaying society where it was significantly worse for the next ones. Free will, what you think of as free will may be something destined to begin with where it’s a paradox, but we live in a world where direct actions end up in lack of control and loads of financial debt where that may be a way to feel in control in at least one way. It’s been generation after generation of highly educated people who can find proper employment in fields their highly educated for. Social mobility is barely making if not in decline and future forecasts are more disease, famine, and economic replacement through automation among other things.
Not at all implying it’s superstition or seeking an illusion of control; there’s something there. There may be other methods of using chart energy beyond electional and talisman. I don’t want to say how exactly that’s possible because there may be a legitimate way. However, it may also depend on natal charts with what works.
Just hope David Icke doesn’t find this and blame the alien invasion on you two.. lol
Someone had me watch a lecture by him 5-6 years ago and figured he worked in advertising and 1 1/2 hours he explained advertising really well, then in the last 15 minutes he went WAY OFF the rails into the 1980’s V tv series crap. My brain had whiplash from the drastic turn. I guess being bitter about a lost soccer career is pretty awful. lol
“Yeah, you study people for effective advertising campaigns, it’s not evil.” Maybe dark magic isn’t that there isn’t a spoon but why we use spoons to begin with. Those reptilians will get you somehow.

Look up a plethora of murderers and see if they (most of them, or some of them) have the fixed star algol that plays a big role in their charts. That would be an amazing episode. Maybe even you guys could check on tragedy during different algol conjunctions.

There are three different types of fate: those things we can choose freely, those things that can be changed to a certain degree through our own effort, and those things that are unchangeable. As everything is arranged by God for our highest good, the best way to approach life is through the practice of gratitude for all, along with altruistic love in everything we do.
In Islam we believe that astrology is hak/haq which means true and valid and from Allah. However, we believe that dua/asking Allah for whatever you want can change fate. We believe that visiting your family members extends ones life and donating to the poor extends life. Funny because i read a study years ago in a psych class, that showed that Christians who donated to church vs none donater church goers had longer lives..
So we do believe that there are these correlations but we also believe that we make choices. Allah is just, he wouldn't create us with a destiny we can't choose. However we do believe he knows where we are headed...Fate is complicated and a mystery.
Happy to see a Muslim practitioner who is open minded about Astrology. I'm a hard core Christian but also interested in Astrology. I can see a lot of correlation between Astrology and in my Christian belief. After all, we are One. Greetings though. 🙂
