Abigail is good for early game caving. She can pull a Stardust Dragon Staff and seek enemies through walls, revealing caves and taking out enemies before you reach them.
Did not know about this. I would absolutely do this since even when I play into certain classes, I almost always use summons to help with crowd control.
Abigail in pre-hardmode feels like a minion meant for area damage, which is not only rarely useful, but practically completely outclassed by the vampire frog staff, which has about the same area and the multiple frogs allow for more places to be controlled at once. Abigail probably has that area damage to compensate for her being a single summon, however the range is still too small, and combined with the fact that summon tag damage is more important due to lower base damage in most phm summons, culminates in her being pretty useless in phm, but since hm reduces the reliance on summon tag damage and the firecracker existing, makes her viable, although for honestly a pretty small amount of time, and even when she is viable, the sanguine staff and heck even the spider staff to an extent makes it a lot easier to distance yourself from bosses while doing damage at the same time. The best don't starve collab item tho.
Another difference is that she can fly while the frog cannot so above you is a lot more covered. I don't get why everyone's so obsessed with viability against bosses, In my time playing a playthrough boss fighting is like, 0.01% of that time.
@@GIRGHGH other ground minions can usually jump fast and high enough to consistently deal with most flying enemies like bats, and her mobility isn't that good given that she has to stop moving in order to attack.
It's so funny to me as an avid DST player, the game Abigail comes from, and see how different she acts. In DST, she's not invincible. She has her own health that caps at 600 (For reference, the standard health for players is 150) and can be given upgrades to buff her, like a speed boost, attacks back when hit, etc. But you can only have one at a time. But the biggest change is how she attacks. She isn't a single target annihilator, like she is in Terraria. She's one of the very rare instances of Area Of Effect damage in DST, making her amazing at clearing swarms of mobs like spiders, hounds, frogs, etc. But she is TRASH against bosses. See, bosses, and certain normal enemies in fact, have 2 damage values. Those used on players, and those used on mobs. For instance, an enemy you can find randomly above ground is the Clockwork Rook. This isn't a boss, just a standard enemy you can fight whenever. Day 1 if you really wanted to. He deals 45 damage to players, but a whopping 200 damage to mobs. And Abigail is classified as a mob. Combine this with the fact that Wendy, the only character that can use Abigail, deals less damage unless she's fighting with Abigail, and bosses become a lot more tricky than with normal characters, where you either try your best to keep Abigail alive, despite her being pretty suicidal cause of her AI, or biting the bullet and just dealing less damage than normal
@Metrocysh yeah Wendy has a 0.75x damage multiplier. Same as Wes. But when Abigail hits an enemy, red petals surround them, and they take extra damage from everything (10% more to be specific), and Wendy gets an even bigger boost from the petals (40%), making her max damage multiplier 1.155x
you know, an interesting way to buff abi would be to actually lift a mechanic she has from DST. In DST, she inflicts a status on things she attacks for a short time that buffs the damage her summoner deals. even if they keep her extremely weak, lifting that mechanic (or even extending it to a defense debuff on the target in general, so teammates can use it) could possibly make it so there's a weird niche strategy of using one of your minion slots for a low level abigail. of course, either way, they should probably make her tracking a bit better.
They could give her new debuffs at levels or increase the debuffs strength as she levels Such as: Defense decrease/dmg taken increase Lower their attack Lower their mov and or attack speed Or add additional occasional attacks like: a dash to current target Self explode into wisps that shoot out then comeback to reform ghost A mist attack(maybe she will leave a trail) A attack where she circles and flies around really quickly in a chaotic way centered on the player(may or may not hit something depending on if the player has nearby enemies) A gaze attack(maybe ghostly eye beams) A "possession" attack where she fully attaches to an enemy doing increased single target damage. If they do add attacks like dash it could get more often/distance as she levels as well Some of these would be unlocked at low levels (like the dash) but the stronger/ more complicated stuff at higher levels
This video instantly reminded me of this one time that whenever Daytime Empress of Light first had the dodge change I said it was an alright change and someone tried saying that Abigail's Flower was a viable weapon for pre-pillars assuming that you don't grab Terraprisma while also ignoring Xeno Staff and Raven Staff. It was a good laugh.
I like how a pre hardmode summoner can sometimes do better in mid to late game than on early game(where it was supposed to be), very interesting video.
I think what could help pre-HM Abigail is slowing down her speed when she attacks, as opposed to stopping on a dime. She's already meant as more of an Event Killer (at least I think so), but letting her actually move would make her able to stay on targets more consistently, and maybe if that was tied to the amount of times she's strengthened it would be up to the player how much more powerful they want Abigail to be at the cost of other summons.

Increasing her base damage by one point and giving her improved movement speed overall _might_ fix or reduce these issues and leave her as being a sidegrade to other minions. Even if she’s meant to be bad after a point, it shouldn’t be unusable in the stages she _is_ in.
This actually helps me a bit cuz i don't wanna fish sanguine before QS So i can now farm QS for blade staff then jump to fight duke without fishing for sanguine :)

I like the idea for a minion to be a support-y minion, like it adds extra damage if it hits similar to tag damage or adds speed boosts n such to your other minions, could make some funny situations and buff certain summons, especially those that are centered around single-uber-summon (like abi and tiger)
Maybe she could gain/better debuff as she levels up Such as defense, offense, speed reduction at level 2,3,4. That gets strong at 5,8 for defense reduction, 6,9 for attack reduction, 7,10 for speed reduction. Or have them increase together such as lower defense by 3+LevelX1 so at level 2 when she unlocks defense reduction it would reduce 5 and each level afterwards would be 1 more (similar for other debuffs) Maybe also inflict increase dmg taken or a reversed"tag" damage where she adds a flat dmg amount for player only similar to how whips increase dmg for summons only.
A late game firecracker equivalent would be sick, my cousin recently did his first summoner play-through and I tried to explain to him the power of the firecracker when paired with certain minions and in certain builds and he tried to use it effectively, but since he’s also fairly new to the game, he struggled to dodge attacks while trying to use it late game due to its low range compared to post planterra whips. That would probably also make desert tiger staff a little more viable on the off chance it drops.

I feel like Abigal should have a range buff, as in, the more slots you use on her, the more range she has, meaning she can hit more enemies, as well as keeping the damage and speed buffs (also maybe a increase in speed) making her somewhat more viable, another thing that would help Abigal is have her move as she attacks so she doesn't miss the enemy.

Definitely needs a direct buff. An item that is only good with another specific item that has synergy with multiple other items is not a good item. It's a functional gimmick at best.
Never knew that abigail got a buff in hardmode. I used to play summoner a lot when 1.4 came out but I haven’t really played it since. Maybe in my next playthrough I’ll play summoner and try her out.
I feel like if abigail had a speed increase and/or moves while attacking it would be really good(obviously hardmode abi would have to be nerfed to componsate.)
Real reason Abigail falls off after Plantera is you can get the Desert Tiger staff which essentially replaces her entirely, wish she wouldn't come to a full stop the moment she tried to hit anything though that's pretty much the only reason her DPS shoots through the floor.
do crits (from morning star and/or kaleidoscope) help much in this case or not enough to be of any real use as well as relying on refreshing the firecracker which this would take that away every few seconds
Abigail is helped immensely if you resuming her at times to put her on you, So she’s not chasing constantly. If you can whip-swap, You can Abby-swap. Highly recommend it, I love Abigail.
Abigail in my honest opinion surpasses her limits with certain mods that allow you to bypass the summon limit (She goes faster than the speed of sound)
can you do a tierlist video for every summon weapon based on their viability? like for example, spider staff is something you dont really talk about. maybe talking about it in a well-structured video can push the devs to change it for 1.4.5?
I'm not going to, however I do have an in-depth Summoner tier list on the Terraria Community Forum, check it out: forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/1-4-4-summoner-minion-whip-armor-in-depth-tier-list.105645/
Abigail should get an extra hit per attack that can only hit one target. Clearly she's meant to deal good aoe to enemies you're grouping up and stun locking in place with melee knockback, but being able to do that effectively vs single targets would make her way less niche for early exploration.
Hey, I started thinking and for fixing abigail, what about making she still move while she's atacking it should make her better right? Sorry for coming late to the video :p
Ngl I think a range, movement, and attack speed buff would help immensely, especially since a lot of terraria bosses are so movement based. But probably the worst part of Abigail is the attack AI. Unlike most minions, Abigail doesn’t have a hit box unless she’s attacking, which makes sense ig since she’s a ghost. But I think to compensate for that, she should have been able to attack any time her would-be hitbox collides with an enemy’s hurt box.
I wonder if making abigail faster at base and then reducing the velocity scaling will make her fare better for phm bosses. Looks like the big reason behind the abysmal boss performance was the low velocity. I do wish this video had included comparisons with non-minion mixes. Like yeah that is optimal gameplay but also wasn't intended or balanced around to begin with, naturally abigail will do worse than it given that she was made with non-mixed builds in mind. Buffing her with minion mixing in mind is also a bad idea. Do you REALLY want a minion you can get early on from a Graveyard to be as good as an advanced setup? Do you REALLY want summoner playthroughs to be either minion mix or spamming abigail all the way until Blade Staff or Sanguine? I dont think so. imo she needs reliability/knockback buffs instead of making her a big DPS minion
As I said in the video, even when velocity/reliability is not a major issue, her actual DPS in most pre-hardmode boss fights is bad. I could have included comparisons with non-mixed setups, but I thought it would be too much work and make the video too long so I didn't bother. Abigail can be buffed without having her being as good as minion mixing, there's a compromise in-between. She just shouldn't be an entire minute slower than optimized setups depending on the boss.
mixed builds are balanced around "to an extent" relogic knows what type of immunity they gave the minions, and as a result knows that mixing them leads to higher DPS as well and don't worry, abigail is consistently worse then pure minion setups even outside finch(local s) and hornet(no s), its just bad for bossing, its usefullness in prehardmode is until you get a better summon early on
@@teiull9388 who told you that No minion has ever been balanced around minion mixing meta Minion mixing is a recent discovery made after 1.4.4 lets not pretend it's been here forever. The only reason it exists is because it would be chaos to give any of these minions local If abigail is significantly worse than "non minion mixes" then thats what the video wouldve shown, because then she is obviously going to be even worse compared to optimized minion mixes
I don't think Abigail is intended to compete with other summons in the first place (except for finch and slime staff). It is an item that you randomly get if there is a grave nearby, while the other summons requires you to farm or mine for certain materials. It is meant to be a nice little bonus, not primary weapons
It shouldn't be so weak in pre-hardmode that it's an entire minute or more behind optimized setups including weapons of other damage types, that's the point. Even already bad setups like full Flinx or full Imp have higher DPS than Abigail.
@@ShyguymaskIt's quite a nice summon to have when exploring, it can attack flying targets, it can pass through walls, and it can hit multiple target at the same time. I don't think the summon was designed with boss fight in mind
@@kevin-7091 Abigail doesn't inflict knockback as I've shown in the video, which immediately makes her usefulness for mobbing questionable compared to other options. Not to mention other minions like Flinx, Hornet, Imp and to a lesser extent Finch are also good at hitting aerial targets. Vampire Frog does a much better job against crowds, BoC and EoW alike. Even Finch could be considered better against crowds if using a whip.
The Abigail minion ironically doesn't always seem to be better by itself. Using the power of minion mixing though, and having at least 1-2 Abigails out could help cover the places where your other minions miss. I love minion mixing not just because of reducing the problem with same minion type i-frames, but it also helps using minions with different attack patterns to cover each others weaknesses so that you are always landing hits.
@@Shyguymask Yeah, now that you mention it Abigail is very slow to begin with. Early game Abigail is probably more suited for exploration and maybe events(bloodmoons, goblin armies, Old One's army events). idk why my friend said Abigail needs a nerf lol, i knew that thing was cheeks with only touching it once on a master playthrough and never using it again , although i did know it got a buff after wall of flesh.. i didnt know it would actually help it.
the abigail flowers though, they're pretty decoration.. i wish you could place them.
Ice platform is my favorite block in the game. Very easy to craft and it looks visually distinct.
Abagail is my favorite summon. Just because I am a huge Dont Starve fan. She's definitely the coolest looking Pre-Hardmode summon, and thats all I care about
No way, ShyGuyMask uploading Terraria!?
this usually doesn't happen, anyway.
Cool video! I really like when you talk about certain terraria weapons, keep the work man!
Tbf Abigail is fun too use
Beat the entire game with her as the only summon while cosplayinf as abigail amd yeah it was the most fun i had for a long time
A yes Abigail my favourite early hardmode summon. Also summoner seems to be getting quite a bit in the next update >:3
I'm a simple man. I hear vanilla touhou OST's, I like.
Does this imply there are Touhou content mods?
sick video, keep it up!
Definitely needs a direct buff. An item that is only good with another specific item that has synergy with multiple other items is not a good item. It's a functional gimmick at best.
She's fine in Hardmode, but she needs a buff in Pre-HM whether direct or indirect.
Never knew that abigail got a buff in hardmode. I used to play summoner a lot when 1.4 came out but I haven’t really played it since. Maybe in my next playthrough I’ll play summoner and try her out.
It’s that one summon you use for “extra” dps until stardust dragon
I feel like if abigail had a speed increase and/or moves while attacking it would be really good(obviously hardmode abi would have to be nerfed to componsate.)
I just finished a pre-mech master mode grind (going with spider staff because it's easy to get), and... good lord that scaling
its always floored me at everyone screaming " abagail is broken" back when she was added cause shes always lagged behind the pack
Is that "Hola soy german" audio I hear? 4:37?
I am assuming you have never played dst before, if true. Did any of the crossover elements get you interested in Don't Starve?.
I checked his Steam account and he did played DST but only for 8.3 hours
Real reason Abigail falls off after Plantera is you can get the Desert Tiger staff which essentially replaces her entirely, wish she wouldn't come to a full stop the moment she tried to hit anything though that's pretty much the only reason her DPS shoots through the floor.
do crits (from morning star and/or kaleidoscope) help much in this case or not enough to be of any real use
as well as relying on refreshing the firecracker which this would take that away every few seconds
unrelated but have you ever tried out factorio or risk of rain 2, if not try both of them, both fucking amazing games
Abigail is helped immensely if you resuming her at times to put her on you, So she’s not chasing constantly.
If you can whip-swap, You can Abby-swap. Highly recommend it, I love Abigail.
Thought this was a Don’t starve video comparing the good and bad of Abigail. I was wrong
Super vidéo 👍
Good video with some strong points, and I do agree Abigail needs a buff. But on the other hand they’re from don’t starve so 10/10
Abigail in my honest opinion surpasses her limits with certain mods that allow you to bypass the summon limit
(She goes faster than the speed of sound)
can you do a tierlist video for every summon weapon based on their viability? like for example, spider staff is something you dont really talk about. maybe talking about it in a well-structured video can push the devs to change it for 1.4.5?
I'm not going to, however I do have an in-depth Summoner tier list on the Terraria Community Forum, check it out: forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/1-4-4-summoner-minion-whip-armor-in-depth-tier-list.105645/
Babe wake up shyguymask just uploaded
Maybe Abigail needs another damage buff post mech? That way you could use her for most if not all of hard mode.
It would be cool but it would also be redundant since Desert Tiger and Stardust Dragon exists.
Abigail should get another buff after Plantera just like normal enemies do (I think).
Although not necessary because Desert Tiger is a thing, it would be cool regardless.
will you do ebf5 challenge video
Abigail should get an extra hit per attack that can only hit one target. Clearly she's meant to deal good aoe to enemies you're grouping up and stun locking in place with melee knockback, but being able to do that effectively vs single targets would make her way less niche for early exploration.
Ok cool
Now try to get the fire cracker as summoner under 50 wof banners
If u still play PvZ i got this ultimate, miserable mod which is called Pvz Nightmare mod
Hey, I started thinking and for fixing abigail, what about making she still move while she's atacking it should make her better right?
Sorry for coming late to the video :p
Increase her move speed and allow her to move while attacking then I bet she’ll be a great all around summon
4:32 spongebob reference 😅😂😂
personally i'll stick with my copper shortsword
She just shouldn't be an entire minute slower than optimized setups depending on the boss.
mixed builds are balanced around "to an extent" relogic knows what type of immunity they gave the minions, and as a result knows that mixing them leads to higher DPS as well
and don't worry, abigail is consistently worse then pure minion setups even outside finch(local s) and hornet(no s), its just bad for bossing, its usefullness in prehardmode is until you get a better summon early on
@@teiull9388 who told you that
No minion has ever been balanced around minion mixing meta
Minion mixing is a recent discovery made after 1.4.4 lets not pretend it's been here forever. The only reason it exists is because it would be chaos to give any of these minions local
If abigail is significantly worse than "non minion mixes" then thats what the video wouldve shown, because then she is obviously going to be even worse compared to optimized minion mixes
Finally after 74 days of wait
just like how Abagail can get completely crushed in certain situations in dst, you cannot just use Abagail for everything.
1-slot Abigail is super slow and other minions also deal more damage than 1-slot Abigail.
@@Shyguymask Yeah, now that you mention it Abigail is very slow to begin with. Early game Abigail is probably more suited for exploration and maybe events(bloodmoons, goblin armies, Old One's army events). Oh well, maybe in the future we could get some more single empowered minions that are quicker, and a pre-hardmode whip that is a weaker and early game version of the Firecracker.
Can I ask what mods have good summoner builds or playstyles? I looked up calamity summoner and kinda dont like it. I heard you're a summoner main so I decided to ask
I heard about mod of Redemption but its still in beta
"TRAE" balances Summoner around whips just like vanilla does and introduces a number of new whips, Summoner armor sets and minion buffs/reworks.
@@Shyguymask notable accesories ? TRAE docs is very confsuing
@@Licitumz I don't see how TRAE doc is confusing, nothing more I can say that the doc doesn't cover.
@@Shyguymask Exactly, its only me who lazy to try and experiment.
Eh, ill still take her over any other minion. She is cute and from dont starve.
If the movement speed of Abigail was better it could possibly be more viable.
She should be able to move a bit while attacking, like some partial momentum thing.
@@Shyguymaskyea that a fire idea
Only Summoner could make a weapon that's somehow at least passable at almost all stages of progression.
is it always better to mix minions? summoner optimization confused me
In Pre-HM yes basically.
@@Shyguymask but not in hm? also which whip should you use with which summons lmao. thanks for the help!
@@employee4275 Most Hardmode minions don't have i-frame issues, so mixing isn't necessary.
4:32 Nice sponge bob reference
you forgot about the style factor, and that the devs dont really know what to do with summoner lol
The devs actually have a pretty good idea of what they're doing with Summoner though.
You’re probably better off just using finches or the slime staff if your super lucky
When you will make new pvz challenges?
My respect for Shyguymask just keeps growing whenever he uploads an informative video for Terraria or Plants vs Zombies.
If Abigail didn’t come to a COMPLETE stop when attacking she’d be at least mildly useful
Song around 2:30 ?
