This brings to mind how years ago I suffered from insomnia. It turned to me a blessing as I am a writer. I perceive that that period of insomnia was a spiritual realignment of my brain cells that my subconscious mind could flow through veins of musical gold into “Apples of Gold in pictures of Silver.” King Solomon wrote all those serenely speculative Proverbs.
I can't describe how comforting this was. I deal with really intense insomnia lasting days sometimes. This really captured the weird bliss it can give when you feel awake and ready for anything then it dwindling away to apathy and back again when you see the sun rise and how beautiful everything looks at dawn.
This is your own composition??!! I'm absolutely blown away. You truly understand the music that a marimba can make, and the sounds that best compliment it. I was in complete awe from the first note to the last. The ethereal sound this piece gave off was just so mesmerizing and i just.. aghhhhh. I love it, all of it. Definitely adding this piece to my personal library. Thank you for the wonderful gift you've given to the world with this piece.
Cody Holmes how did you write this piece of music? Did you use Finale or something like that? How did you publish it. I’m interested in creating music and was wondering how to publish it online.
I tried to play this piece with a friend at college. There some stuff you wrote that isn’t possible and you do different things in the video. It also became apparent from playing it that the audio in this video does not match
@@CephalopodToaster Thank you for your concern for the legitimacy of my piece and this recording. Regarding the audio and video, this was our very first production. I used separate microphones when recording so I could get a proper mix. I admit that some sections of the video aren't stacked as well as they could be, but are from the exact same performance. There are a couple of typos in the work that I would be happy to help you with if you send me an email. If you are finding the overall work impossible I would suggest playing some less challenging pieces and working your way up.
This is definitely the best piece of music I’ve heard written for marimba. I feel it truly captures the essence of the marimba at least how I’ve always heard it. Marimba is very ethereal and many pieces don’t capture that aspect of it.
This is probably the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard. This is so beautiful. I cried at this and I never cry at music. You are a wonderfully talented man. This made my day
I’m so glad I got to hear this live from you Mr. Holmes and thank you for the pointers. My friend and I are going to be attempting to play this our senior year as a last hurrah and is going to be a great challenge with all the triple lateral stuff going on. Thanks for teaching me back at Irons!
Although I'm a woodwind player, I've always been amazed by those who have the skill to play with multiple mallets. I had no clue it was a thing until my senior year in high school.
This is why I love percussion, and mallet percussion specifically. I basically devote my solos in school to mallet percussion that speaks to me. This piece for sure will be my next challenge to overcome.
To all that have been asking about sheet music, I am hoping to release the piece for purchase as soon as possible! I will be sure to include a link to the site of purchase once everything is ready to go. Thank you all very much for your interest!
Saw this from the r/percussion subreddit. I'm a big fan for sure. The moment at 0:35 grabbed me and I stayed for the rest of the piece. Really good stuff.
It's a shame that Texas UIL Solo and Ensemble doesn't allow duets to qualify as an ensemble, or at least doesn't make it a category anymore, because I've wanted to play this for two years now.
While I’m sure it would sound lovely, I feel as though it would ruin the atmosphere created by the marimbas. The raw, natural sounds from marimbas are beautiful and should stay as such.
This is the most incredibly composed and performed marimba duet I’ve ever seen! I’m blown away by the amazing sound and life created through this piece!
I think this is officially my favorite marimba piece. It conveys the idea so well. I like to think this piece is about one's train of thought lying awake at 2 AM staring at the ceiling. A thought enters the mind, and that thought begins to lead you down a train of deep thought, only for it to eventually drift away as you realize you are still there, lying awake. New ideas form, entering and leaving, with ideas interjecting themselves within each other, with old ideas coming back and going until it leads back to the original train of thought again, with it eventually drifting away into peaceful sleep... Truly amazing. Keep up with this and with the wonderful modern art that is percussion!
There is simply no instrument more underrated than the marimba. Most people don't even known what it is. And we have peices like this that never even gets seen by 90 of people. Ugh it's kinda sad.
The title “Insomnia” really fits this piece. It’s like you turned the emotions i feel watching the world through my window at 6 am into music. What an amazing duet!
One of my percussion instructors challenged me to learn this piece and after listening to it I really came to a greater appreciation of the marimba and a deeper respect for those who play it.
I love how soft this feels~ It's relaxing yet you can hear the hard work and dexterity required to play it. Truly Talented, and such a beautiful piece!
I DID IT. I figured out why 5:41 - 6:13 is my favourite part of this piece. The harmonies in this piece are fantastic but this part takes the cake, and I can’t even hear the mallets hitting the keys so it sounds like a marimba choir, especially in the lower and middle voices. It’s amazing! I also found this out at 5 am with no sleep how ironic
I don't know if it's done on purpose, but I really like the way you're slaping your sticks together sometimes, adding another percusive sound ! Great Job
Even in this piece though it almost sounds like missed notes hit with mallet shafts sound right because of the sound of the piece in my opinion. At least their hits are just so perfectly timed lol.
Yo I recently got to play this at a percussion ensemble concert with one of my best friends and I just want to thank you for making such a great piece.

A beautiful piece, the name "Insomnia" is a great name, and can definitely be characterized by the background arpeggiation in the beginning. Great work!
