I have been driving on and off since 2016. Right now my biggest issue with Uber or Lyft is manipulation. It’s just sickening and demoralizing. I understand it’s a hustle but I just want to drive and earn a fair split of the fare collected from passengers without playing games.

These companies do NOT CARE about either the driver, nor the rider, so it's up to both driver and rider to care about each other. This creates success for both driver and rider. They should've never tried to fix what was not broken. It all started going bad when they went IPO.

As soon as you get a ride turn off the ride requests until you drop the person off and then you won't have the offers hitting your screen. Then when you drop them off turn the ride requests back on. I've found it to be a less stressful way to deal with being bombarded with offers while I'm driving and usually having a conversation with the customer. So much safer that way.and I can actually see what I'm accepting instead of just blindly accepting sometimes.

If only it were that easy! You can take a ride that seems high paying and still be screwed. I took a ride that paid $33.71 for 22mi or so... guy paid 117.98 for the trip. For me, that was about $1.53/mi... good right? $33.71 for 40ish min of work, but overall that means Uber kept 72% while I got a measly 28% when I'm doing all the work and their system just pairs passengers with drivers. Not to mention, when I don't have any riders set up in my queue and the trip thing pops up... I'll select the ones I want, but then not get any of those, another ride will come direct to my phone and it'll be away from the surge area even though I choose rides that had surges attached. So... the ability to pick high paying rides isn't really there. I do cherry pick, I do take only rides that are above $1.00/mi and if I do a lot of driving... I generally make about $2k/wk. I prefer to stay busy and moving, knowing that I might have a small fish now, but I could be moving to an area where a whale is waiting that's also a tipper!

You forgot how Uber hustles and removes you from a profitable area with short pick up distances and send you to unprofitable areas where every pick up is at least 15 minutes or more than 5 miles. They do it by starving you with small $4.59 fares and then showing you a $25 fare that will still take about an hour to complete to nowhere. Once there and an hour away from city center, you will be shuttling riders 15 to 20 minutes away and essentially losing money. In the past Uber used to pay for doing this manipulative technique by paying for completing 3 consecutive rides with the last one taking you to no man’s land. Now the algorithm just trick you and dump you in an area where you’re forced to offer losing rides.

Uber has an "auto-accept" option in my market (Tampa Bay). I've never turned it on, but it's there. For awhile we had the same problem with getting scheduled rides as a normal ping. There was nothing to tell you it was a scheduled ride until you arrived and that was usually 15-30+ minutes too early. They substantially fixed these issues now. The ping is clearly marked "scheduled ride" (so at least you know) and after you accept it, the little icon is different so you can tell, and you can immediately look at the trip details and the exact scheduled pick up time.
This is the messed up thing about it. If uber can give that information to drivers in my market, why can't they give to drivers in Jay's market?

What burns my ass is the trip notifications being shown in time as opposed to distance, the way Lyft does. A 15-minute trip in Toronto can mean 1 km in distance in rush hour traffic. a 45-minute trip can mean anything as well. But what's really ire-inflicting is the 1 + hour trips that can take you out of the city and preclude you from getting trips in that region. Decline a trip and you still get penalized from even getting to see trip notification information AT ALL. As a diamond driver, this is unconscionable to me and offends me no end. In Toronto, not only are you penalized for a high cancelation rate, but they get you on a low acceptance rate as well.

I would not have waited 25mins for the scheduled ride. In my market, it tells me when the rider needs to be picked up, so if its a good ride I can hop on Lyft to do a short ride and then head for the scheduled ride. You can also call the pax and ask them if they're ready, explain that waiting 25mins is a waste of time/money. 99% of the time, the rider is ready. Only 1x a rider wasn't ready but he tipped me $15 because I called and gave him the option of coming right away or waiting

That's exactly what I've learned to do. I don't even do those bonuses anymore, they're just a trick for you to pick up those micro rides. When you add a regular day up, of your selective rides, compared to picking up micro rides to get that 100 bonus, for picking up 60 rides, you'll still be way short of your regular selective ride day. Beware of those bonuses, they're just a waste of gas and no money.

Yeah, it sucks as a driver, since you never look at your phone for those until they are gone. But from the rider side, it's great for them since there'll be at least one driver who'll likely see their request. Some of these other things I never noticed, thanks for pointing them out.

I have a couple of manipulations. One most people should know already is that if you take a small fair (for what ever reasons you have) the AI will give only small fairs until there isn't anyone around to take the good stuff.
And a new one with Uber Eats. A store owner told me about a new Uber policy to combat people sitting around where if you wait to long at a place for an order the system registers the driver as a bad match for the store and basically bans them from the store. This will reduce your pick up locations without notice. So if you're waiting to long, to avoid being banned you jave to cancel the order. That will still mess with your cancellation rating. It's a no win situation.

By auto accepting you're now in the position of either taking that crap or cancelling and watching your cancellation rate climb to potential platform expelling amounts.

I have a 54% and 53% acceptance rate with Uber and Lyft respectively. Which I know they consider to be very low. Honestly, I'm surprised it's that high. I feel like I turn down 2 or 3 rides for every one that I accept. They have ZERO CONCERN for drivers making money. So, I'm pretty picky about the rides I accept. I believe that their algorithm actually rewards picky drivers, even though they strongly encourage drivers to accept every ride they are offered. And here's the thing... They are about customer satisfaction, even though they don't give a crap about drivers. So, if there is a customer that needs a ride and they know you are a picky driver, they will pay you whatever they think it's going to take to get you to accept that ride and take care of that customer. Today I got an offer for $18 that I accepted. In talking to the customer I found out he only paid $20 and change for the ride. So they paid me around 90% of that fare. Why? Because the algorithm has figured out that I look at the pickup distance and the drop off distance and I will not accept the ride if it's not profitable. So, they made me an offer that I couldn't refuse, to make sure the customer was taken care of.

With Uber you have to check not only the hourly rate but also the earnings per mile - in about 5 seconds. It may be a good earnings per mile, but have stops that make the trip take too long. Or it might be a trip that takes you to an area that's not busy. I heavily use the last trip feature, especially when I anticipate that there will be surge near my destination. I also heavily use Lyft's area filter to keep me in the busier areas. You cannot rely on one app or the other. Incentives change week to week, and usually one i better than the other on any given week. If there are no incentives to work towards, then I will run both apps at the same time and take the best available trips. Given all the gimmicks they throw at you, I have primarily focused on earnings per mile. I make about the same per week as I did in 2019, but I am driving 300-400 miles less per week, and am in the car less. I don't have much tolerance for down time. I won't sit in my car for an hour doing only one short trip. I'd rather go home and do chores.

I actually like that Uber doesn't automatically connect me with the next ride and let's me choose. I only do Uber anymore and this allows me to decide if I want to take it or not while I'm driving which often dictates where the current ride ends. In Nashville you often can't get the rider exactly where they want to be so I may drop them off on the opposite corner. Knowing ahead where I'm going next helps to maximize this.
I do agree with the last point regarding scheduled trips which I generally hate but I ALWAYS call every rider as soon as I show up and ESPECIALLY on scheduled trips for that reason. If they told me they were still going to be 25-30 minutes there is no way I would wait and I would explain to them I'm going to cancel and another driver will be along closer to their selected time. Why would you NOT call the rider and just sit there for 30 minutes??? Sorry, but that's just wasting your time. Often on scheduled trips the rider will be ready and able to leave early. Again, why I ALWAYS call...also let's them know I'm there and verifies I'm in the right spot

    * The key thing is to make every ride a last ride in settings. It protects your rating and forces them [ The Lyft/Uber Driver Managers ] to play fair with you with offers.
Bottom line, None of these companies survive without good, reliable drivers.

here is the trick of maximizing your profit of each trip, in another word de-converging their algorithm. you have to study your market and see the right point of inflection in terms of how many minutes the ride is far from you, never accept rides that are closer to you because that is where you loose money and they profit up to %60 of that specific ride. personally my threshold is 7 minutes, and that will keep their profit between 25%-30%. so imagine if all uber drivers pick rides in their market pick that are far by 7 minutes or so what will do to the algorithm.

Ive never earned more than this minimum 19.20 because i get a adjustment every 2wks. Pay and bonus on each ride dosent mean a thing.
