Experts say that different parts of the meat processing and consumption industry release greenhouse gases, which harm the planet by contributing to climate change. By eating less meat, people can reduce their carbon footprint and also minimize excessive water use.
But Paul McCartney’s campaign for people to reduce their meat consumption is a deeply personal one.
McCartney, a global icon and former Beatle who is often known more for his music than his activism, is a vegetarian himself and discussed his personal choices and passions in an interview with Susan Goldberg, editor-in-chief of National Geographic magazine.
In the interview, McCartney talks about his nonprofit campaign, “Meat Free Monday.” The campaign focuses on the negative ways that eating meat can harm the environment, and McCartney hopes to encourage people to help slow the progression of climate change by eating less meat.
In the interview, McCartney also told Goldberg about his inspiration for writing the Beatles' song "Lady Madonna"-a National Geographic photograph of a Malayo-Polynesian woman nursing a baby. The image, taken by photographer Howard Sochurek, was published in the January 1965 issue of the magazine.

One day a week... and then, eight days a week! :-)
01real1 😂😂😂
Yes! He makes me vegetarian ❤️🐮
Lol
I
Omg i Don t mean to get off the topic but I love your screen name....o just listened to RA's. Whenever you need somebody cassette the other day(yes I kept all my tapes!)
YES!
nothing but enormous admiration for sir McCartney. Such an inspiration!
Living legend
What a good human being,he sure has handled fame and fortune well..
I agree with that
Yeah. He corrupted The Beatles and stole their money!
Ive ben vegan for more then a year 😌
Thank you, Paul!
I’ve known he was a veggie for many years it’s the first time I heard him speak about it. He has highlighted all the issues vegans care about. He’s right about not asking to make massive changes overnight but to start with small steps. The food is really good and pretty much any dish can be made meatless. The health benefits are astonishing with whole foods plant based diets and if you have ever really seen what the inside of a slaughterhouse looks like it’s something no caring person would pay for to keep them running.I’ve been vegan for over two years and love it , it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.
But he's vegetarian not vegan?
veganforlife that’s correct 😉😉
David C Great.
There's a documentary I think by National Geographic of an old fellow in his 90s who's vegan. What makes this person special is that he performed open heart surgery back in the days. And he has some very interesting stories how badly the meat, dairy and derivatives affect the health of the heart. This is my main argument for skeptics who have no compassion nor consciousness.
You're amazing
i agree with pauls campaign, all hes asking is for one day meat free, he's not trying to force you to change your lifestyle. Unlike Peta throwing shade at his campaign.
Hmm.. that's a bit strong, isn't it?
I think they're less throwing shade than trying harder to challenge people more directly. I mean, that whole thing is their main reason for being, whereas Sir Paul is a singer with huge influence anyway; if he gets too heavy people would freak out against him and he'd lose influence, so, he's got to keep playing it kinda cool.
We love your enthusiasm! Thanks for watching!
Hi Andrea, what do you mean by "Peta throwing shade at Paul's campaign"? Is there a link where I can read about this? Thanks!
He likes PETA. PETA is at all his concerts handing out pamphlets.
How a person diets is nobody's biz but their own. Worry about yourself and you'll be fine. There's bigger issues in the world than obesity.
In the end the love you take is equal to the love you make
Thank you Sir, for bringing the biggest issue this world has ever faced forthhand. Compassion.
"I try and keep it something I would of understood and accepted before I became a vegetarian". How can you not like that? Not pushing just sharing.
He's a very empathetic person
Sir paul mccartney is one of the reason why i started vegan life. I love you !
I started "One day a week" a good while back. It has helped me tremendously cut back on all red meat.
I had my yearly cholesterol tests done two days ago. For the first time EVER, my numbers are just BELOW national standards. They've always been outrageously HIGH. (I've never taken a (dangerous) Statin drug, and never will.) I am now seriously CRAVING salads and beautiful fresh apples :)
Thanks, Paul and family
Thank you paul, what a beautiful soul ❤
I really love to paul mccartney he's my idol, thanks to him for everything he has done ♡
Vegan, 14 years old, African-American in Texas. If I can be vegan, surely you can.
Cruelty FREE vegan food diet. Mazel Tov.😊
Good for you! Not sure what being African-American has to do with it though 😊
That's up to how somebody wants to live. It's not your call to make.
And besides that, what does AA got to do it with it?
Wow, I heard that Texas has almost no vegans
Paul McCartney is such an inspiration
Great story, it’s always nice to hear Paul. I’ve never been a vegetarian but lately I’ve have a problem with eating anything with a gave so I’ve been eating less meat. I think humans eat far too much meat and should eat a smaller portion and more vegetables.
I do t eat that much meat. I can go a couple days without but not a lifetime
@@davidbrunson8887 Why not?
Yes
Wonderful interview of both sides. Very respectful and great to listen to. Thank you both!!!
Thank you for speaking for those who don´t have a voice. You´re so right that´s "it´s a life" and we don´t have a right to take it.
I respect you a lot , Paul. Thank you.
What a wonderful interviewer! Genuine. Kind. Humble. Respectful. I am a fan.
"....You know" -Paul McCartney
Paul McCarthy youre an angel I love your compassion 💖
I started "Meat Free Monday", and more and more , have withdrawn from especially red meat.
Started getting HOOKED on beautiful fresh salads, and lots of Gala Apples. Soon HAVE to have them both. Meat is becoming not so important. ie: Paul's plan worked very well for me, and I'm deeply grateful. Can hardly stand to look in a meat case anymore. It turns me right OFF, and I quickly walk away. (fast) :)
THANK YOU PAUL!!!!!!
love you Paul!
THANKYOU, thankyou for caring paul, they're are very few people who even consider this, they just make jokes and try and forget about everything they're doinggg, but it makes me soo happy knowing a famous figure like yourself is taking vegetarianism on
moral responsibility to save lives > moral responsibility to respect others’ opinions which are based on the inability to think critically
Not the best strategy though.
Yeah, but that's a very bad strategy. Being agresive you will have bad feedback.
Pauls down to earthness is just one of his best qualities out of all the gazillions of amazing qualities he has
I do it 8 days a week
I went over night long ago.
Reopened more then an awakening in myself on this journey compassion like a child. Mine was a gator farm that served gators and chips.
He's so handsome
you still look good Paul!
His views on vegetarianism is really great. You can’t scold people into changing their lives drastically, not everyone can change like that unless you really put mind to it.
Paul is doing a very courageous and great thing and I'm sure expects flak from people who feel threatened by those who don't eat meat. He is not eating animals out of compassion for them and for the good of the environment and planet and for all the human beings on it. He has been spending his money on environmental things, promoting greater care for our planet, for decades. That is true nobility.
Thank you Paul
Respect
Paul you are my hero! Most because you started a movement that is spreading this idea of consciousness! And of course your music also make the same effect... But to make vegetarians around the world is a really legacy that will follow you all your existance. Lots of love to you!! Namaste! Jana Favato
Such a great icon and inspiration to us all. Thank you and keep going Paul!
I got a McDonald's advert before this... Oof
*Y’know*
Beautifully spoken... The point is that you can't change people - people have to change themselves. His campaign and many others only show you the right path, but the decision whether you choose it or not, is your own ~
This was beautifully written!
Paul❤️
Love all animals not just the ones that live in your house!💚💚💚
We do not have to kill animals to be healthy and happy.
guess if I was the editor in chief, I'd throw a fit if I wasn't the one interviewing Macca
Yes, once a week may be still not enough, but its the gateway to be full vegan.
I agree, it’s better than eating death 7 days a week
@@benp.5698 I'd rather die than give up meat.
Also, ensuring sufficient food supply. With a rising population, we will need to have a more efficient food system. Some can be by further technological advancements, but just eating more beans and less beef is a good starting point. Adding in stuff like advanced fermentation and various biological advances (adding natural microorganisms to fields seems to be gaining momentum, pretty brilliant if it's a microorganism that infects a specific pest insect while leaving most others alone. Other organisms can help plants effectively utilize nutrients and fertilizers) will lead to very large populations being fed by smaller areas of land. Thus allowing us to grow more forests and to use land for other things. More parks, more wild areas to enjoy and so on. I'm not even a vegetarian, but let's just say that I have way more lentils in my apartment now than I had when this video was released.
The Catholic Church used to request that only fish be eaten on a Friday! Whatever happened to that ecumenical point of view?
I’ve always wondered Paul feels strongly about animal rights and since veganism is a mainstream thing now why isn’t he vegan I’m not saying he should I just thought he’d convert at some point
I love Nat Geo documentaries, the ones underwater, the forests, all of that. It is terrible to see all these companies killing animals for food, that is why I stop eating animals, to stop the suffering of all these animals. Then I realized that the plants suffer as well, I am very fond of
trees and plants, so I decide to stop eating vegetables and fruits as well. So I become a cannibal, today I only eat human flesh, this save the animal kingdom and the plants kingdom as well, and I am helping to reduce the population.
Paul McCartney died in a car crash in 1966. This is Billy Shepherd.
referring to animals as "little dudes" with such passion is the greatest thing ive ever seen
Historic Indian Subcontinent had a lot of these activists! Lots of Days where you are advised to not eat meat in our culture. Mondays are especially full fast day for many.
Go vegan
i love her top
Not enough grey tones in the color correction here. LOL ;)
But cool interview!!
Did they film this during the recent eclipse or something?
Was it in the smoking lounge of the local truck stop?!
Had they lent out all their filming lights to James Balog to film icicles melting again or something?!?!
The odd thing is this is how most places actually look. I have been recording for about a year and life that is NOT "color corrected" is actually this color, kinda gray with color overlaid on it.
Thanks for watching!
I feel that, rather than be a vegetarian/vegan, you appreciate the animals that've been milked and/or killed
I think animals would rather not die for someone else's unnecessary pleasure, whether or not someone "appreciates" their deaths...
They value their lives and we don't have to harm them.
@@VixenAurora It's not unnecessary pleasure. I'd say that killing animals for fashion is unnecessary but not as food.
I'm inspired...
Happy World Vegan Month!
My ex would have a very hard time following this movement.
I'm not a vegetarian, if you are good for you. It just all comes down to how you want to live your life. I like how he isn't forceful on telling people to go vegan like many others do. I actually don't eat meat already once a day a week, I could feel a difference just on how I feel. But I'm not going to be a vegan or vegetarian
That's cool.
BTW, have you seen Cowspiracy yet?
Wolff there’s over 70000 different edible fruits 🍇 and vegetables 🌶 don’t limit your self 😉
David C ok, but what does that have to do with what I said?
GOLDENFLYWARRIOR well to say not to eat meat is a little stupid, it's like telling lions not to eat a gazelle. We are able to eat meat, yes the way we treat animals in order to eat them is unethical. It's like telling people who have been on drugs to just simply tell them tomorrow stop using drugs, it's not going to happen. The way we treat animals is terrible and yes, it's hurting the environment, but it's not going to change over night
Never too late to to vegan, Paul! The dairy industry is arguably more cruel than the meat industry.
Not really possible. Paul might be a vegan though.
Interesting fact all the beatles expect John are or where vegetarian
Meat is no worse than any other form of animal exploitation. Whether a cow used for her milk is eaten after she is slaughtered or her body gets thrown into a ditch because people won't eat her body, she still dies and she still didn't want to die. The male calf who dies because he will never produce milk doesn't care if his body is eaten or he is tossed in a dumpster, he didn't want to die - period. Male chicks don't care if you didn't eat them, they still don't want to be dropped into a grinder. Spent hens don't care if their bodies rot in a pile or go into Campbell's chicken soup, they don't want to die at all. What is done with their bodies afterward is not the problem, their unnecessary harm is. Going from bacon and toast to a "meet-free" breakfast of a cheesy omelet is actually causing more suffering and death to animals. We don't need modified violence to animals, we need non-violence. We have an obligation to be vegan. We have no right to harm others when we don't need it for survival. Veganism is the minimum standard of decency.

It's okay to be a vegetarian or vegan, as long as you're not forcing your habits on others. It's their choice, and nobody has the right to tell them that it's wrong. Just saying, but I still love Sir Paul
Opinions are ok to have, but not at the expense of other living creatures. Paul is being more gentle than perhaps we deserve.
@@jemvee3830 except that he supports PETA. I have a weird feeling he doesn't know how bad that organization is, and let's be honest, "People for the Ethic Treatment of Animals" sounds nice on paper.
He doesn't just walk the walk!!
His compassion for animals is great. What about humans? What about satanic rites and gestures, Paul? It's all about compassion?
Linda’s vegetarian food is really tasty
This idea sidesteps the real problem. Too many humans. Vegetarianism just kicks the can down the road a bit
Catholics do that during lent for every Friday lol
Joseph Harding lent isnt so long...
Why Meat Free Monday?
Does he eat meat Tuesday to Sunday?
I'm a little confused
No he's encouraging others to take it one step at a time.
I love how he keeps inventing a deeper meaning to his songs in his old age! Still competing with John...
Paul Knight How is he “inventing a deeper meaning to his songs in his old age”? If you’re referring to Lady Madonna, I remember him saying the exact same thing many years ago. It’s not just a matter of competing with John. He is, and has always been, quite capable of thinking for himself.
So you mean, he's saying stuff you didn't know about.
Moralistic scolding, well, God forbid we be honest, wouldn't want to hurt your feelings by being straight up about you needlessly ingesting body parts, organs and secretions while supporting an abusive and an unsustainable industry.
Is Susan Goldberg a Vegan/Vegetarian?
I love that Paul is so awesome. But meatless Mondays is a patronizing worthless joke. People can handle and need to hear the truth. They will only experience the benefits going all in. You don't tell a addict or abuser hey, it's ok as long as you don't once a week. It takes a strict month to change a habit and experience all the physiological benefits that come with eating whole plant foods.
Why? Lennon wanted to change the world. Paul doesn't want you to eat meat one day a week. Paul manages, once again, to not offend very many people. Now, I AM a vegetarian, and I think it is a good idea, BUT let's face it, the world is in so much trouble that this isn't really going to have much of an impact. It's simply Paul being Paul. No controversy.
Veggie clan 🤪🤙🤙🤙
As a practicing Catholic I don't eat meat on Fridays during Lent so that's a start for me I try
Susan is cute
well according to denny laine's wife paul would hide behind the amplifiers with giant burgers
Off topic but that lady is hot!
I'm eating a quarter pounder right now
Wow youre so funny
"Don't approach it with a sledge hammer, you got to keep it gentle you know". Yes Paul, we know how to boil a frog slowly.
For me, "Meat Free Monday" started with ONE special meal planning a week.
That's all I really did. The rest took over by itself. All by itself! So thankful. :)
If you go to any integrative physician, they will tell you of clients that they have whose guts have been through every type to probiotic treatment on the planet, and they still cannot consume 50%+ of all vegetables, and they also cannot eat wheat and processed carbs without experiencing extreme abdominal pain. These people must eat meat to survive. The key thing, however, is the type of meat that integrative doctors recommend. First off, you don't need to eat NEARLY as much as most Americans do. Secondly, the meat that you eat must be hormone free, free range, grass fed, etc. The healthiest meat you can possibly buy. And fish must be all wild caught, and there is usually an encouragement to keep track of the seafood watch. The main reason for this is because the meat that is mass produced is extremely unhealthy. I know the veggies on this page will feel that I am full of it, but integrative medicine is on the cutting edge. These doctors are able to get patients to eat things like celery and romaine lettuce leaves (the soft parts) when their tummies couldn't handle anything other than chicken soup for 10 years. A vegetarian diet is not for everyone. But it is true that more people can be on one, and also that we as a society are consuming way, way, too much meat. We don't need it.
He makes up for it by smoking a lot of dope.

If he ate meat he wouldn't look so old.
meat-free everyday. Go vegan :) It's the best thing you can do for the environment, and you can't call yourself an environmentalist without doing so.
Sure you can. You just can't pat yourself on the back until your arms fall off.
You define an environmentalist by being a vegan? What a narrow view of the WHOLE world.
Diane Deatherage considering the consumption of meat and dairy are the two largest contributing factors to global warming and emissions, yes, I do. Because how can one call themselves an environmentalist whilst endorsing the destruction of the environment? If that is what you call a 'narrow view', I wonder whether or not you know the meaning of hypocrisy?
Mimi Flaherty Let me guess. You got those facts from Al Gore. He invented of the internet and who resides in a multi-millon dollar house with an enormous carbon footprint and not a single solar panel in site.
Diane Deatherage of course not. I just wonder where you got your propaganda. Because you are clearly ignorant to the truth. Watch Cowspiracy.
I stopped walking barefoot across coals years ago! Therefore I no longer have carbon footprints. So nya.
this annoys me because i swear gen z think they started this sh.
What? Nobody thinks Gen Z started the concept of vegetarianism 😅
But no compassion for cows and their babies, otherwise he would be vegan
He IS pretty much vegan, for the most part.
I believe that I read that he has been vegan for the past 4 or 5 years now
Paul has never been vegan. He's vegetarian, and eats cheese and dairy.
wow.. vegan elitist here. Just give him props for doing his part. No need to bring negativity into the comments
He went vegan in 2013. There is nothing in this interview where he says he isn't a vegan
I was eating a meat pie while I was watching this, sorry mate :) is cheese a vegetable? lol
I can't "Meat Free Monday". I have left to smoke and to eat pig meat. It's all.
Yeah okay.
Have you watched Cowspiracy yet?
It's on Netflix.
How abt compassion for oranutans and take palm oil out of the mccartney veggie food range...???
Where did his English accent disappear to?
Everyone, please watch my little nature videos. There is no talking in them. Shhh!
He looks dead without meat
I've been to two of his concerts, both times he performed for 3 hours without taking a break or even drinking any water, I'd love to see you being that active at 75
fore skin says the boy with the engineered excuse for a "dog"
Terrible lighting combined with being English and age.
Its not MEAT its 50 years since he was a Beatle... You age half a century and try being as lively as Paul! He even mentioned Woody Harrelson is full vegan!!
You make great music. But make your homework when you talk about meat. Sorry thum down. Focus on music. That what you are probably born to. 🙏
paul is dead
Lol
This is not funny anymore
